THE FOUNDING CURATOR’S OPENING REMARK It is my greatest pleasure to register that we are completing the third successful year of dedicated work and commitment at Yerevan Hub of the Global Shapers Community, an initiative of World Economic Forum. Since the very establishment of the Hub in 2012, we have been engaging enthusiastic and outstanding individuals by gathering them around our vision and endeavors. . I am very excited that the team’s contributions into the Armenian community have been constantly growing throughout these years. Staying true to WEF motto “Improving the state of the world”, the team has strived to bring positive change into the community we live in. . Around seven significant projects have been effectively conducted in various spheres containing social, cultural and sports purposes. The smooth progress of these undertakings is mainly due to the diverse backgrounds and know-how that our members share throughout their teamwork. Acknowledging the importance of developing sustainability, we extensively raise partnerships for long-term projects. A vivid example of this approach is "TUMOrrow" socio/cultural project that is running already the third year.
Hovhannes Toroyan Founding Curator, Yerevan Hub
In today’s world, challenges and obstacles in daily life are real. Consistency and determination are required to overcome those challenges. I strongly believe that the opportunities to overcome those challenges are even more real. With commitment and collaboration we can open new gateways for these opportunities. Valuing the impact that young and proactive people can have in this development, we try to diversify our support group and include youth at all levels from different regions in our projects. . Looking ahead to 2015/2016, I want to thank once again all our shapers, partners, mentors and volunteers who spend considerable amount of time and resources on changing our community for the better and wish a year full of impactful projects in our Hub. As a Hub we would also like to express our gratitude to the World Economic Forum and peer Hubs for their continuing support, encouragement and goodwill. . It has absolutely been my true pleasure and joy to work with every single member of Yerevan Hub in a healthy and balanced atmosphere of professionalism and fun. I am really blessed to get to know these sharp, active and caring people and even make friends with them. Their strong sense of initiative, solidarity and cohesion has given the Hub the ability to develop new project ideas and successfully implement them. . In the end, I would like to once again express my strong belief that with collective efforts we can challenge the existing problems, create a bright reality, shape a confident and sustainable future for this world. Best regards,
Hovhannes Toroyan Founding Curator, Yerevan Hub

YEREVAN HUB Overview Yerevan is the capital city of Armenia, a country with ancient cultural heritage and interesting geographical location, situated at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Yerevan is an ancient and at the same time a young city with talented young people devoted to shaping a better future and realizing ideas to make our country a better place to live in. Since 2012 the Global Shapers Yerevan Hub has brought together such active enthusiasts, passionate and optimistic young people with different professional and educational backgrounds, who are ready to devote their time and efforts, share professional expertise and leadership skills to reveal different issues existing in the social and economic life of our city, initiating innovative solutions and triggering positive changes both in Armenia and globally. The Yerevan Hub Shapers are from diverse professional areas, ranging from finance to education, from information technologies to arts and culture from health to social policy from business to design/communication. . Despite varying interests and personal characteristics Yerevan Hub shapers are unified and inspired by the common idea: “Committed to Improving the State of the World”. .
6
Cooperation Layers and Recruitment Our people are the decisive assets for making the Hub successful. From the very beginning, we decided to form four layers of cooperation with the Yerevan Hub. First layer would be Mentors that is currently comprised of 7 very reputable individuals that have shown excellence in their fields and proved high stand of morale, as well as have experience in working with the youth. We also expect that our most successful alumni will be part of the Mentor group in the future. . Second important circle of cooperation is with Partners, a group of individuals and legal entities that have supported the Hub in organizing various activities. Another important cooperation circle would be Volunteers that have agreed to spend their time in support to the shapers and are asked to help us in the implementation of specific projects, if necessary. And of course the last but obviously the most engaged would be Shapers themselves. .
Shapers at Work Yerevan Hub shapers have one mandatory meeting per month. Shapers engaged in particular projects have more frequent meetings driven by the project urgency, planning and implementation. . Standard projects usually undergo through 5 stages: idea generation, research, action plan preparation, actual implementation and reporting. . Shapers at first present their ideas on topics and issues they would like to work on, offering possible solutions based on their own field of expertise and interest as well as coming from the urgencies of the issues they have identified in the local community. Some of the ideas also come from media or interaction with different leaders. Once the pool of ideas is formulated, they are being discussed at a meeting and prioritized based on the collective decision of all shapers. Shapers then research the topic of interest and present a draft project. . Based on the findings, a project leader is selected, who takes the responsibility for preparing a detailed action plan with specific tasks and deadlines for the shapers involved. Afterwards, the implementation stage starts, when the project is actually brought to life. . Obviously, interim reporting per stage of implementation of the action plan and actual outcomes versus anticipated results helps the team to keep track on the flow of the project and ensure high efficiency of all efforts that Shapers put in. Depending on the project, shapers also meet in smaller groups when needed. This is a fun process where every single member of the team enjoys his/her time and also has some fun. Occasionally we meet to socialize, have a party or spend a nice weekend in the countryside. .

YEREVAN HUB PROJECTS
TUMOrrow: Empowering Teenagers Launched in May 2013 Yerevan Hub, TUMOrrow is implemented in cooperation with UNICEF and TUMO Center for Creative Technologies in Yerevan. Through the project around 20 kids from night-care residential institutions and low income families get the opportunity to participate in classes with four focus areas: Animation, Game Development, Web Development and Digital Media. They also collaborate on project-based learning as well as learn new skills and get motivated at lectures and other events, such as TEDX Kids which inspired them a lot.
In 2013 Yerevan Hub won the “Coca-Cola Shaping a Better Future grant, which gave the opportunity to expand the project involving kids with hearing impairments and another group of kids from socially vulnerable families. Currently the total number of kids who get the opportunity to attend TUMO totally free comprises about 40. Yerevan Hub shapers also initiate various educative and motivational events for the children besides the classes. In year 2014/2015 the following development activities have been organized by the shapers:
16
MEETING MY FUTURE Global Shapers Yerevan Hub started a new initiative “Meeting My Future”. Within the initiative we asked the kids from socially disadvantaged families from our "TUMOrrow" project what profession they want to gain and who they would like to meet in that field. The feedback was amazing and the chosen professions varied from dentist and programmer to cook and military servant. The idea is to motivate the children by the people who reached success in their fields of expertise as well as raise children’s awareness about all the aspects of the profession they have chosen. . Afterwards, the Shapers started matching kids with the professionals they wanted to meet with. Below are the stories of some of the kids. We express our gratitude to Robert for the time, effort and motivation he gave to our kid! We are also thankful to everyone who supports our initiative! Edgar Poghosyan – 12 years old, wants to become a Cook, he loves feeding people. Together with Edgar we went to the most famous Cook in Armenia - Grisha Antinyan. Should say that he gave a lot of great advice and recommendations not only for becoming a good Cook, but also for becoming the best person a kid can be. Edgar was so motivated that he decided to start learning other languages and read more.
Villik Grigoryan – 14 years old, wants to become a Programmer, that’s why he was very excited for attending TUMO center through our project. He met his first professional mentor Arman Atoyan – the founder and CEO of X-TECH. Thanks to Arman and his team Villik was very motivated with the world of IT and besides we had a lot of creative fun there. This made him work even harder at TUMO.
Karen Simonyan - 13 years old, adores football and dreams of becoming one of the best players of Armenian National Team. So we organized his meeting with his mentor - one of the players of Armenian National Football Team - Robert Arzumanyan. Karen was very enthusiastic, asking a lot of questions, talking about his dreams and getting valuable advice from his mentor. He also received a great souvenir a ball of FIFA World Cup with a personal message from Robert Arzumanyan.

ONCE UPON A TIME: FAIRY TALE IN MY LIBRARY On June 15, 2014 Global Shapers Yerevan Hub launched its new project - “Once Upon A Time” - initiated by three young and enthusiastic shapers of the Hub. This is a fairy tale retelling and story-telling project for children aged 7-12 from socially vulnerable families in Yerevan that will expand to other regions of Armenia on later stages. The project idea was based on such current urgent social transformations in Armenia that bring to blurred national identity among the young generation, lack of civil responsibility and acknowledgement of being a change-maker, which is especially vivid within socially vulnerable groups.
ONCE UPON A TIME – when tales come true The goal of the project was both psychological and socio-cultural. It was driven to enhance the development of children’s personality and value system through strong cognitive influence of fairy tales, strengthen the civic identity, nurture the sense of being a change-maker and focus the public attention on the necessity of the book in the children’s education and development, to revive the love and need towards reading. Yerevan Hub shapers, together with the psychologist, designed the detailed methodology and structure of the program.
The core storytelling program consisted of four different sessions, each session aimed at developing children's instant qualities and attitudes through storytelling, discussion, games and other engaging activities. During the sessions children learned to express positive self-attitude, to overcome their fears of failure and be active, to be engaged in different positive activities and develop self-confidence as well as be part of a team. The last session was a parent-child session, when all the children presented their achievements and learning to their parents and got evaluation from the psychologist.

FAIRY TALE IN MY LIBRARY With the success of the project and already developed program module in 2015 Yerevan Hub scaled up the project in partnership with the Orange Armenia Foundation in the scope of their special annual grant directed to unique, sustainable and impactful projects. "Once Upon A Time" project was scaled up to “Fairy Tale in My Library” the goal of which is to create adorable and motivating reading place for kids at the age of 6-10, to boost their interest towards books and reading through fairy tales, as well as increase access to non-formal and creative education of the children. “Fairy Tale in My Library” was implemented in Ijevan which is a border city in Armenia. Ijevan is far from the kids’ alternative and creative development hubs, thus the children as well as educators have limited access to new and advanced alternative education techniques which boost the development, especially for primary school students.
In the first stage of the project a separate beautiful and neat reading room was renovated for children in the local regional library, furnished and equipped with all the necessary goods needed for reading, having enjoyable rest and organizing developing group-works. This will lead to the increase in the flow of primary school children to the library and increase in interest towards reading. On the second stage of the program a 3-day training program for children was implemented driven to boost their personality development through acquiring self-presentation skills, critical thinking, and courage in creating interest towards reading. Also training was organized for 15 local primary school teachers, sharing non-formal education methods to enrich their individual bank of educational tools for working with children and to show them how to use fairy tales to develop a child’s personality, self-esteem and creative thinking. Afterwards, these teachers can share their knowledge with the teachers from neighboring villages encouraging them to do the same, assuring the scalability and sustainability of the project.
