Indore : Indore Pollution Control Board (PCB) claimed that pollution level in the city was lower than Bhopal but it has more population and vehicles than the state capital. In a press conference here, noted activist Kishore Kodwani said, “The information we received from the PCB shows that Indore’s pollution level is 80 points lower than Bhopal while its population per square kilometer is much higher.” According to the figures which he presented,
population per square kilometer in Bhopal is 6,619, while it is 16,670 in Indore. Similarly, the number of vehicles in Bhopal per square km is 2,923 while it is 13,075 vehicles in Indore. “I wonder how is it possible the pollution level of Indore is lower than Bhopal when the number of vehicles and population are much higher in Indore,” Kodwani said. The reason behind such a report is that the areas inspected by the team, said

Kodwani. “There are 4 PCB centres in Ujjain and 4 in Bhopal, where the population per square kilometres is lower than Indore, while in Indore there are only 3 PCB centres,” Kodwani explained. He reasoned that the PCB is inspecting areas that do not depict the real picture of the city. Also, he added that we need more PCB centres, as Indore is a tier-2 city. In a suggestion for getting the real picture of pollution in Indore, he said, “I urge the Central Pollution Control Department to take samples from 25 major areas of the city to discover the real pollution level.” Further, he pointed out that the major industrial and residential areas must be considered under the PCB

Top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis survived a scare to win their 29th consecutive match and enter the women's doubles final of the Sydney International. The Indo-Swiss tennis pair won a rain-interrupted semi-final 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 in one hour and 32 minutes to beat RomanianKazakh pairing of Raluca Olaru and Yaroslava Shvedova on Court 1 of the NSW Tennis Centre. In the process, they eclipsed the 22-year-old record set by American-Belarusian pair of Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva, who won 28 consecutive matches in 1994. Sania and Martina have now begun to chase the world record which was set in 1990 by the
dynamic Czech duo of Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova, who won a whopping 44 matches in a row. "Today the girls we were playing, they were playing probably the best I've seen them play. Slava has won Slams, before Olaru was playing really well. We had to really put everything that we had and really come out with our A Game when we needed to, especially in that super tie-break," said Sania. "It's not like because we been winning so much we take it for granted really. We try every time. We're the hunted. Everyone plays their best against us, and we have to keep playing our best as well to win," she added. The world's top ranked pair are now eyeing their second title win
of the year after clinching the Brisbane International crown. They claimed nine titles last year en route to becoming the top ranked women's doubles team, the highlight being wins at the Wimbledon and US Open. The top pair, dubbed 'SanTina' by their fans, were trailing by a set, lost 4-6, and were down 1-2 in the second set when rain intervened. That helped them turn the tables upon resumption as they fought back to overturn the deficit and claim the second set 6-3 and utilized their experience to claim the decider narrowly 10-8. The win was viewed by the ecstatic pair as an ideal preparation for their Australian Open ambitions, which will be their third straight Grand Slam

triumph if they win it. They have not lost a match since the Cincinnati Masters last year. "This is something that I dreamed about and was hoping for. I can only say it over and over again. It's something that it's a priority also. When I was playing singles, singles was priority. I became No.1 there. Also simultaneously I was No.1 in both," said Martina. "Now I put 100 or 120 percent into this, and that's what makes us this great doubles. The chemistry is amazing. We don't always play super tennis, but we come out and find a solution, that's what makes us right now the best doubles in the world." In men's doubles, Sania's compatriot Rohan Bopanna, partnering Romanian Florin Mergea, defeated Australians Sam Groth and John Peers 6-2, 6-4 in 57 minutes to enter the semi-final.

Bangluru : Chief Executives of companies such as Google’s Sundar Pichai, Tesla’s Elon Musk and Apple’s Tim Cook, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in San Jose last September, are among the 2,000 startup invitees expected for unveiling the government’s Start Up India initiative on January 16. The global workshop on startups will be held in the capital, a senior government official said. Prime Minister Modi is expected to address the concluding session of the workshop, where he will unveil the g o v e r n m e n t ’s a c t i o n p l a n f o r promoting such enterprises based on a slogan he coined in his Independence Day Address last year — Start Up
India, Stand Up India. “The Start Up India launch would be similar to the start of the Make In India campaign in September 2014, with CEOs and other stakeholders attending. But it will be an event driven largely by the startups, for the start-ups and invitations have already been sent out to Indian CEOs who will get an opportunity to interact with their Silicon Valley peers,” the official said. Indian startups received $9 billion in funding in 2015, which is half the total amount they could raise in the five years preceding 2015, the official pointed out. The event is being organised by the department of industrial policy and promotion in partnership with Nasscom, the industry body representing software and IT firms and a few think-tanks in the start-up ecosystem. Among the various initiatives that the PM could announce include a new law that makes it easier to start and exit a venture and additional support for ‘innovative startups’.
New Delhi : Manufacturing sector contracted for the first time in 25 months in December as Chennai floods triggered significant decline in output and new orders, a monthly survey showed. Painting a gloomier picture, the survey said that the rate of decline was the sharpest in almost seven years. The Nikkei India Manufacturing PMI, a composite monthly indicator of manufacturing performance, dipped from 50.3 in November to 49.1 in December. The PMI has slipped below the crucial level of 50.0 for the first time since October 2013. A figure above 50 represents expansion while a reading below this level means
input costs and output charges were at seven month highs. “The continued depreciation of the rupee against the US dollar pushed inflation higher, with PMI price indicators pointing to stronger increases in both input prices and output charges,” Lima said. He further said that “following the Fed rate hike and expectations of further increases, more currency weakness is anticipated, adding strain to businesses’ dollar-priced debt and import costs”. During 2015, the Consumer Price Inflation has remained well under control hovering in the range of 3.665.4 per cent so far in 2015, while the industry chambers and some other
contraction. December’s incessant rainfall in Chennai impacted heavily on the sector, with fall in new work leading the companies to scale back output at the sharpest pace since February 2009, the survey said. Incoming new work has also contracted for the first time since October 2013. “India’s manufacturing sector took a turn for the worse at the year-end, with already-gloomy internal demand further hampered by floods in the south of the country,” Pollyanna De Lima said adding that “such was the extent of the decline that the rate of reduction was the sharpest since the financial crisis”.On the price front, inflation rates of both
experts are hopeful that it would keep below 6 per cent mark in the New Year — a target set by the Reserve Bank. Another dataset, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation in fact stayed in the negative zone for the entire 2015, meaning the wholesale prices actually fell and there was no inflation at all. While it entered the negative zone in November 2014, the WPI inflation stood at (-) 3.8 per cent in October 2015. Meanwhile, the government recently lowered its economic growth forecast for 2015-16 to 7-7.5 per cent from 8.1-8.5 per cent.
Mumbai: Mobile commerce (mcommerce) is growing rapidly as a stable and secure supplement to the ecommerce industry. Shopping online through smart phones is proving to be a game changer and industry leaders believe that m-commerce could contribute up to 70 per cent of their total revenues, according to the report. Mumbaikars had left behind all other cities in India shopping online in 2015. While Delhi residents rank second, Ahemdabad came third, Bangalore fourth and Kolkata fifth in their preference for online shopping in 2015. “The customer is connected 24x7 through their smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices which is leading to a gradual evolution of ecommerce into mobile commerce and there is an issue of convenience which also leads to impulsive buying,” Mr Rawat said. The browsing trends, which have broadly shifted from the desktop to mobile devices in India, online shopping is also expected to follow suit, as one out of three customers currently makes transactions through mobiles in Tier1 and Tier-2 cities. In 2015, 78 per cent of shopping queries were made through mobile devices, compared to 46 per cent in 2013, said Mr. Rawat. The highest growth rate was seen in the apparel segment, almost 69.5 per cent over last year followed by electronic items by 62 per cent, baby care products at 53 per cent, beauty and personal care products at 52 per cent and home furnishings at 49 per cent.
Kochi : Alstom, the French transportation equipment maker, rolled out the first set of railway coaches for the Kochi Metro project from its facility at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. The three indigenouslydesigned and manufactured coaches were flagged off by Union Minister for Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs, M. Venkaiah Naidu this month. The Kochi coach order is the second rolling stock contract for Alstom in the country, with Chennai metro the first. The Metropolis coaches, which were handed over to Kerala Minister for Power and Railways Aryadan Mohammed, will take at least 10 days to reach Kochi where they will be received by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The civil works are at an advanced stage and trial runs expected to
The most important contributing factor to the rapid growth of digital commerce in India is the increase in the use of smartphones. Mobiles and mobile accessories have taken up the maximum share of the digital commerce market in India, according to the paper. Almost 45 per cent of online shoppers reportedly preferred cash on delivery mode of payment over credit cards (16 per cent) and debit cards (21 per cent). Only ten per cent opted for internet banking and a scanty seven per cent preferred cash cards, mobile wallets and other such modes of payment. As per the findings, many small companies have also established online stores for group buying, which enable customers to obtain goods at a discount so long as a certain number of people make the purchases. Shopping centers, whole sale markets and supermarkets should create their online stores to reduce costs and develop product-tracking systems, Mr Rawat said. Among the age segments, the 18-25 yea rs age group was the fastest growing age segment online with u s e r growth

It is not only a truly Make in India product but it is also a testimony to the fact that Indian skills, craftsmanship, technical prowess and entrepreneurship are one of the best in the world,” Mr. Naidu said. Alstom Deputy Senior Vice President, Jean Francois Beaudoin, said it was truly a ‘Make in India’ product for them as it was conceptualised, designed, manufactured and tested by an Indian team. The survey highlights that three per cent of regular shoppers are in 18-25 age group, 52 per cent in 2635, eight per cent in 36-45 and two per cent in the age group of 45-60. Sixty-five per cent of online shoppers are male with females constituting 35 per cent. The products that were sold most in 2015 were mobile phones, iPad and accessories, MP3 players, digital cameras and jewellery, among others. As per the study, there would be more than a five to seven-fold increase in revenue generated through ecommerce compared to last year with all branded apparel, accessories, jewellery, gifts, footwear available at a cheaper rates and being delivered at the doorstep. The most popular among the e-commerce websites — Snapdeal, Myntra, Flipkart, Amazon, Jabong and others — have been doling out massive price cuts or discounts on purchase of popular brands of apparels, footwear, electronic goods, coinciding with the year end. According to the report, the one of the driving factors for the online shopping is the age profile of the consumers who are young, between 15-35 years. Mumbai: Out of 300 million defective banknotes that were printed in one of the printing presses of government-owned Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India, about 100 million of those notes have hit the market leaving the general public in a tizzy. About 200 million pieces were transferred to the RBI’s currency chests, some of which was then loaded in banks’ automated teller machines, sources close to the development said. Currency experts said that the checking of notes is done at the presslevel and the banking regulator is not involved with checking each and every banknote. An RBI spokesperson has confirmed the development and said banks have been asked to replace such notes with the central bank, when found. Banks have also been advised to replace such notes whenever a customer approaches them. The notes are genuine though they are defective, the spokesperson said. There are four printing presses which print and supply banknotes. These are at Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, Nasik in Maharashtra, Mysore in Karnataka, and Salboni in West
Bengal. The presses in Devas and Nasik are owned by the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India (SPMCIL), a wholly owned company of the Government of India. The printing of the notes in Karnataka and West Bengal are done by the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of RBI. Sources said the defected notes were printed in the Nashik press while Security Paper Mill of Hoshangabad produced the currency note paper. The security thread was missing in the defective pieces, the sources said. The 1000-rupee notes which was introduced in October 2000, contain a readable, windowed security thread alternately visible on the obverse with the inscriptions ‘Bharat’ (in Hindi), ‘1000’ and ‘RBI’, but totally embedded on the reverse. As on March 31, 2015, there were 5,612 million Rs 1000 denominated notes in circulation which constitutes 6.7 per cent of the total notes in circulation. In terms of value, Rs 1000 denominated notes constituted 39.3 per cent of the total value of notes in circulation. Notes of denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 together accounted for approximately 85 per cent of the total value of banknotes in circulation at end- March 2015. Notes of Rs 10 and Rs 100 together accounted for 54 per cent of the volume at end- March 2015, RBI data shows.
