Season of Celebration

Bonjour! Welcome to our last issue of 2022 as I write to you from my cabin on Viking Fjorgyn as we sail on the Seine River on our way to Rouen in France’s Normandy region. The smooth sailing continues right into 2023 as we prepare for another year of delivering first-rate travel content to our readers through Global Traveler, globaltravelerusa.com, trazeetravel.com and wherever family.com.

As always, our December issue is an exciting one, with the annual announcement of our GT Tested Reader Survey awards. On the following pages get to know the reader-voted winners in our 19th annual ranking as well as our hand-selected Airline of the Year and Hotel of the Year winners and the second annual winners of our Outstanding Diversity &

Inclusion in Travel honors. As we honor 2022’s most excep tional in travel, we also start the kick-off to next year’s major milestone: the 20th annual GT Tested Reader Survey awards! Join us to celebrate the 2022 winners in this issue and on Dec. 6 at The Ritz-Carlton LA Live in Los Angeles and to help launch our countdown to 20.

As 2022 rolls into 2023, we’re working to bring you a new roster of exciting destina tions in the new year as well as a new column on the latest and greatest in must-have products, debuting in our January/Febru ary issue next month. Some of the exciting content ahead for next year includes a look at airline startups, the best walks around the globe, scuba diving tours, Mediterranean cruising, touchless airports and so much more. Next year we’re also pub lishing two digital-only editions, available exclusively on our app, that come from our sister brands, whereverfamily.com, coming in May, and trazeetravel.com, next October.

But before I get too far ahead of myself, there’s much to unpack in this month’s issue. We hear from InterContinental Hotels Group, The Peninsula Chicago and London’s The Lanesborough, as well as learn about Metallica’s — yes, the band! — brand of whiskey. And we jet off to Tel Aviv; Berlin; the Mal dives; İstanbul; Birmingham, Alabama; and Newport, Rhode Island. Plus, there’s so much more. Enjoy this issue, have a warm and wonderful holiday season, and Happy New Year from FXExpress Publications, Inc. I’ll see you in 2023!

Away We Go!

It is amazing to be marking the 19th annual GT Tested Reader Survey awards with our December issue. We look forward to hosting a gala evening at The Ritz-Carlton LA Live in Los Angeles on Dec. 6 to present the best the industry has to offer, all selected by you.

I just returned from a magical journey on the AmaPrima, one of AmaWaterways’ river ships, in southern Bavaria. Boarding outside of Luxembourg, we began our tour on the Moselle River. Over the next seven nights we visited Trier, the oldest city in Germany, and continued along the Moselle River Valley. From there we cruised through the Rhine River Gorge, viewed all the fortifications and castles and entered the Main River. We visited medieval German cities like Wertheim, Wurzburg and Bamberg before cruising the Main-Danube Canal to Nuremberg, a charming city whose center was faithfully restored after the devasta tion of World War II.

This was my first river cruise, and I truly enjoyed the service and cuisine. We were fortunate co-owners Rudi Schreiner and Kristin Karst were also on board, offering insight into the attention to detail they both put forward to make AmaWaterways so enjoyable. The company celebrated its 20th anniversary this past July … a milestone recognized by the many repeat custom

ers who sailed with us on the AmaPrima. Look for my complete review of the cruise in an upcoming issue.

To get to Luxembourg, we flew from Newark to Amsterdam in United’s Polaris cabin, excited to spend some time before the flight at the Polaris Lounge (fond of the vegetable curry and the gummy bears). In Amsterdam we connected to KLM for a business-class flight to Luxembourg. As many of you know, KLM invented the first business class in 1976. Despite the chaos37 of European travel this past summer, every flight was spot on and on time. Our decision not to check bags helped make us light and nimble.

I usually stop on the way back from Los Angeles to check on our offices in Sarasota. We were fortunate to receive little damage from the recent hurricane, but that’s not the case in many areas to the south of us. As the area recovers, please choose the charity you feel will be the most helpful. Colleagues report things are moving rapidly … a testament to Florida’s ability to deal with these issues.

Raise a glass to this year’s GT Tested award winners, and we will see what new destinations 2023 brings!

Q&A TIME

In our November 2022 issue we asked: Do you prefer to stay closer to home for the holidays, or do you use the break to see a new place? A few readers wrote in:

Because my family is spread out across the United States, seeing family during the holidays is a vacation in itself. With some family in Minnesota, some in Florida and a few in Arizona, we like to rotate where we host our Thanksgiving and Christmas gettogethers so everyone has the chance to escape the cold (or heat, in Florida). It would be nice, however, to travel somewhere completely different for a change, but we must wait until the kids head off to college for that to happen!

The holidays are my favorite time of year, as my wife and kids like to travel somewhere new each year. We never really had traditional holiday meals with family, as most of them live outside of the United States. Last year we went to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. This year we plan to visit the Oregon coast. The only catch to traveling during the holidays is staying off the roads the day before and after Thanksgiving, as well as the few days before and after Christmas, as traffic piles up quickly.

UNITED AIRLINES THREATENS TO DROP JFK SERVICE

In the Sept.14 issue of eFlyer, we told readers United Airlines announced its plans to pull service from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport unless the airline was granted more slots. We asked: How might this affect your travels should the airline pull out of JFK? Which airport do you prefer for international connections: New York (JFK) or Newark (EWR)? Two readers wrote in:

Since reading this news when it initially came out, I’ve learned United Airlines officially announced its decision to leave JFK temporarily. As someone living in Manhattan who travels frequently for business, this means I have fewer options. I often flew

United Airlines at JFK, so this change entails me turning to other airlines at JFK or venturing to Newark. I prefer JFK for international flights, as I experience fewer delays than I do at Newark, and the loss of United Airlines at JFK will, no doubt, affect many others like me.

When I first heard the news of the airline potentially withdrawing from JFK should it not receive more slots to compete with other domestic airlines, I thought either United Airlines or the Federal Aviation Administration would give way to prevent something like this from happening. I hope it is only a temporary departure and that United will return to JFK soon.

JAPAN OPENS BORDERS WITHOUT HEAVY COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS

In the Sept. 28 issue of eFlyer, we told readers Japan officially opened its borders for the first time in two years since the beginning of the pandemic. We asked: Are you planning a trip to Japan now that its borders are open? One reader wrote in:

I had planned a two-week vacation to Japan for 2020. Of course, I had booked this trip in early 2019, and little did I know a pandemic would ruin these plans and the plans of countless other travelers. I contacted some of my family and friends the minute I heard about Japan reopening its borders.

As I had a two-week itinerary planned for more than three years now, I will adhere to that schedule as best as possible. I expect some places on my itinerary to be closed or have restricted access as the country slowly adjusts to post-pandemic life, but I am beyond thrilled to head to Japan next summer. Fingers crossed the COVID pandemic doesn’t plan to return!

WILL AIRLINES BAN TRACKING DEVICES IN CHECKED BAGGAGE?

In the Oct. 19 issue of eFlyer, we told readers about a recent mix-up over Lufthansa’s statements regarding the use of tracking devices on checked baggage. We asked: Do you use tracking devices like AirTag on checked luggage? One reader wrote in:

Yes, I recently completed my first trip using AirTags. We were able to see our bags were still on the dock at a near point to the ship

leaving. We alerted the ship’s team and told them exactly where our bags were located. Some minutes later, our found bags were brought to us.

On the way home, the trackers worked well, but two of our bags didn’t have trackers. Of course, these were the two bags left at the terminal. A port agent has them en route to us after seeing they were the only bags left in the terminal.

Do they work? Yes, and if we had tags in our left bags, we would have been notified and had time to turn around and get them before going on our way to the airport. We are home now, and the bags will reach us soon via UPS.

Aspen Lake Launches NFT Private Luxury Club

Aspen Lakes, located in Sisters, Oregon, announced the launch of the world’s first membership to the golf and destination club as an NFT, allowing the purchase of exclusive memberships on the blockchain as an NFT, with Ethereum’s equivalent to $15,000.

“NFT memberships function the same as traditional old-world models but without the dated process es, computer records and archaic stacks of paper. Using an NFT model, we have an opportunity to switch the narrative — that lumps crypto into the casino side of the industry — and bridge the gap between cryptocurrency and real-life hospitality experiences,” said Cindy Wyant, CEO, RHUE Resorts. “Being the first company to offer an NFT membership of this kind, Aspen Lakes is able to offer a truly unique and fulfilling experience. Our members are in control of their memberships, not us. They can buy or sell at any time without consequence.”

Using NFT, Aspen Lakes, part of RHUE Resorts, grants lifetime membership, giving NFT owners the chance to experience the luxury and tangible value of their cryptocurrency holdings. The NFT model for Founding Family memberships provides access to amenities like its world-class, 18-hole golf course; no annual recurring dues; little to no application process or fees; transferability with ease; and premier access to future RHUE Resorts real estate developments.

EYOS Partners with Ocean Conserva tion Foundation

EYOS and Ocean Conservation Exploration and Education Foundation, two of the world’s leaders in ocean exploration, joined forces to embark on important citizen science missions and to push the boundaries of underwater research and conservation. The partnership sets data-collecting missions aboard OCEEF’s 5-star research yacht, RV Odyssey

The yacht will circumnavigate the world with missions in the Chagos Archipelago, the Galápa gos, Antarctica and other remote destinations, exploring aquatic ecosystems alongside top scientists, explorers, educators and students.

“Working with OCEEF in this way is a natural complement to EYOS’ last few years leading and managing the Five Deeps and Ring of Fire expedi tions that drove the Challenger Deep and previ ously unseen deep-sea environments,” said Rob McCallum, founding partner, EYOS. “Odyssey rep resents the new frontier of expedition travel, mixing cutting-edge science with adventure travel and expedition cruising. The opportunity and potential for further discovery with this vessel’s program is immense, and it will be tremendously exciting for all those fortunate enough to be on board.”

OCEEF invites travelers to support its mis sions in Antarctica this winter season by traveling aboard RVOdyssey for the most memorable and exclusive experience, providing a firsthand look at the research participants help support. With a taxdeductible donation of $150,000, donors and their family or friends can join the crew on board.

Orient Express Reveals Future Train

Orient Express reimagines its original train by reviving forgotten carriages and bringing them back into service, keeping 1920s-inspired designs with details of contemporary luxury. First used 140 years ago, these carriages hold decades of stories and memories. Accor revealed the first images of the future Orient Express train as well as details about its opera tion once launched in 2025.

The future Bar Car will feature a glass counter, a clock at each table that rings out cocktail and dinner times, and a call button reserved exclusively for Champagne service. In the Dining Car, architect Maxime d’Angeac revisits the motifs of the original Orient Express with partitions separating dining spaces, a mirrored ceiling crossed by a series of arches, and tables and wraparound armchairs, all lit by lamps with original-style shades.

In the suites, comfort and function prevail with rounded corners, wood- and leather-covered partitions and bed headboards boasting “embroidery” of wood, mother of pearl and bronze. The famous Lalique “Blackbirds & Grapes” panels from the historic train are displayed in the suites. In addition to large sofas and beds, suites include a bathroom and dressing room.

CARTÉ HOTEL SAN DIEGO DOWNTOWN

ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: There’s no doubt Carté Hotel San Diego Downtown embraces laid-back vibes, the city’s constant energy and the sleek style of modern ar chitecture and design. Situated in the heart of San Diego, the hotel serves as an upscale paradise, with rooms on the top floor offering vast views of the bay and pool. With the Global Business Travel Association happening in San Diego this same weekend, the hotel was notably busy, with all rooms booked for the night. That said, the general buzz of hotel guests in the lobby and restaurant was far from chaotic, and an employee stood waiting outside to open my taxi door and help carry my luggage inside.

GUEST QUARTERS: The hotel booked me in a room on the 15th floor facing the bay. This meant the moment my room was ready, I hustled to the floor-toceiling window and opened the curtains as much as possible to let in the sunlight. Carté did not exaggerate when it mentioned bay views, as I could even see individual boats floating on the water. The room featured muted and neutral colors of grays, whites and dark browns, accented by a deep teal wall behind the bed. With plenty of outlets and the most updated technology, including a large television, I was tempted not to leave my room and simply look out the window from the comfortable bed.

The bathroom exuded modern luxury, with a large vanity; dimmable lighting; and dark, patterned walls. The rainfall shower went beyond an ordinary shower, with extra space and smooth glass walls.

SERVICES/AMENITIES: The hotel boasts several great amenities and services, from a rooftop bar on the 16th floor to an inviting restaurant on the first floor. Above Ash Social, the rooftop bar, features fire pits and even more views of San Diego. Delicious cocktails abound, with drinks like Sunday Flowers — a concoction of You & Yours Sunday gin, butterfly peaflower, lemon and sparkling wine — and shareable bites, such as house-made hummus with warm pita bread. For breakfast, a poolside brunch or dinner, Watercolors Restaurant has it all. I couldn’t get enough of the passion fruit pancakes for breakfast, the tart passion fruit curd adding the right amount of sweetness

and flavor.

In addition to these two eateries, the hotel features a terrace pool and the Lido Lounge. While the pool was under construc tion during my stay, its location a few stories above ground will make for a unique pool experience. Guests of the hotel also enjoy a day pass to Fit Athletic Club on the third floor, complete with advanced workout equipment, fitness classes, a steam room and sauna.

TOP TAKEAWAYS:

Unbeatable views. Securing a room on one of the hotel’s top floors promises expansive views of San Diego Bay. Each room boasts floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize San Diego’s natural beauty.

Sunset at Above Ash Social. Do not miss an exceptional sunset over the Pacific. Venture to the top floor for a cocktail and bite while soaking in the golden sky.

WESTHOUSE HOTEL NEW YORK

ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: I traveled to New York City for the 10th anniversary of Global Traveler’s Leisure Lifestyle Awards and the fifth anniversary of WhereverFamily’s Wherever Awards at The Lotos Club. WestHouse Hotel New York was my home away from home for my one-night stay.

I arrived shortly after check-in. The property boasts an Art Deco-inspired design, evident as soon as you enter the lobby, with black and gold tones, sparkling chandeliers and marble columns. The helpful front desk attendant swiftly checked me in and went over the amenities at the hotel. She noted the front doors are locked after midnight and I would need my key card to enter. I appreciated the advance notice, so I was prepared when I arrived back late after our event. The key card is also necessary for riding the elevator to your room floor.

GUEST QUARTERS: My luxury queen guestroom felt spacious, especially by New York City standards. The room furnishings featured neutral tones in gray, white, cream and dark brown. There were two nightstands, a plush chair, set of drawers, LED television and a large desk with ergonomic chair.

The shower décor matched the rest of the guestroom, with black, white and gray touches. I found the gray marble shower tile especially chic. Beside the glass shower door there was a small hole cut out in the glass near the showerhead where guests may turn the shower on without having to climb inside. I loved this feature and also used it to test the water temperature.

The mattress, sheets and pillows were all comfortable. I also appreciated the quietness of the room; I didn’t notice traffic sounds from outside while I slept. I wished I had more time to sleep there!

TOP TAKE AWAYS:

Make sure to stop by the terrace for daily break fast or afternoon tapas and excellent views.

The property is located steps away from iconic Manhattan attractions including Carnegie Hall, The Museum of Modern Art and Central Park.

WestHouse Hotel offers a Special Resident program for guests traveling with pets. The offer includes a pet bed and bowl, with dog-walking services available to book through the professional pet concierge.

WESTHOUSE HOTEL

NEW YORK

My stay in New York City was less than 24 hours, so, unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to experience all of the property’s amenities. On the morning of my departure I had breakfast plans with my colleagues Kimberly Krol Inlander and Mary Melnick. However, before setting out to meet them I stopped in the property’s terrace on the 23rd floor, which serves complimentary breakfast. I took advantage of the warm, sunny weather and enjoyed a cup of coffee and orange juice while sitting outside on the terrace. In the evening the terrace serves complimentary tapas, beer, wine, Champagne and dessert 5–8 p.m. There is a 24-hour fitness center located on the third floor. Free audio workouts are available. Guests may also take advantage of business center services and complimentary WiFi.

CARILLON MIAMI WELLNESS RESORT

ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: I made my way to Miami from Sarasota, Florida, on a Sunday morning in time to catch the Miami Marlins baseball game at noon. After a Marlins’ win against the Mets, I drove to Carillon Miami Wellness Resort on Miami Beach. From the moment my car entered the property, I could tell I was about to enjoy a refined resort experience. Even the outdoor arrival felt like a world away from Miami Beach traffic, with a beautiful sculpture and warm glow on the ceiling above the roundabout. After the valet took my car, check-in was a smooth and easy process, and I headed to my room on the 10th floor.

GUEST QUARTERS: As I opened the door to my onebedroom luxury apartment, I was pleased to see I would indeed be staying in a luxurious room with significant space. Larger than a typical suite, my room opened to a full kitchen with two barstools against an island, perfect for enjoying a light breakfast. The kitchen gave way to a cozy living area with a sofa bed, side chair and large flatscreen TV.

In a separate bedroom, the king-sized Bryte bed allowed me to customize the perfect temperature and firmness for more restorative sleep. Both the bedroom and living room had sliding door access to a large balcony with a stunning view overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. And while the apartment was indeed luxuri ous, the oversized bathroom was an exceptional space. The right side featured a large, modern, rectangular soaking tub separate from the floor-to-ceiling glass shower. A water closet and large

vanity area continued on the left. The oval-shaped vessel sink and oversized mirror at the center allowed for more preparation. But the star of the bathroom was the gorgeous mosaic inlay on the marble floor made of metallic tiles, resembling paisley-shaped flowers. Its glimmer and shine could not be captured in photos.

SERVICES/AMENITIES: With “Wellness Resort” in the title, Carillon Miami certainly lives up to its promise, offering two outdoor pools, a large gym overlooking the ocean, rock-climbing wall, salon and easy walking access to Miami Beach. I enjoyed ex cellent meals of both lunch and dinner at The Strand, the on-site restaurant. Additionally, there’s a corner store with healthy grab-and-go options as well as in-suite dining and a café at the pool. The Tambourine Room is not yet open but will feature an exclusive, 18-seat fine-dining experience by Tristan Brant.

And, of course, there’s the spa. The Carillon was kind enough to offer a few spa treatments during my stay — and I gladly accepted. I enjoyed three different treatments, including The Prism Light Pod, V.E.M.I. (Vibroacoustic Electro Magnetic and Infrared Therapy) and Ballancer Pro. However, the star of the show is undoubtedly the hydrotherapy circuit. These hot and cold therapies include a crystal steam room, herbal laconium, igloo, foot spa, Finnish sauna and experiential rains. I enjoyed moving from room to room, warming then cooling, cleansing and refreshing my body as the stress melted away.

TOP TAKE AWAYS:

Carillon Miami offers in novative wellness (Eastern, Western and alternative options) with a bit of indul gence in a superior location.

The spa offers private well ness circuits for both men and women.

Rather than a traditional hotel room, Luxury Apart ments grant both excep tional space and amenities for discerning guests.

A LITTLE BIT MORE

What actor or actress would play you in a movie of your life? Well, when I had hair, I looked like him more, but Tom Hanks. He really cares about history and seems compassionate. What would you be doing professionally if you weren’t in your current industry? I’d be a journalist

in some capacity, either print, digital or broadcast.

What is your favorite book, movie or television show? Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts is my favorite book. I’ve spent a lot of time in India, and this book is a great description of the country. At more than 500 pages, it is extraordinary, compelling and riveting.

What historical figure, dead or alive, would you love to have dinner with? Mahatma Gandhi; he led an extraordinary life.

THE BUSINESS

What is your most recent project, and what was the inspiration behind it? Participating in the rollout of our new loyalty program, IHG One Rewards. Our focus on the individual and what matters to them as they travel is at the heart of IHG One Rewards. This is both

inspiring and exciting, as we know personalization is a high priority for our guests. Members have choices on how they want to engage and can focus on their preferences, those things that are important to them. In addition, there’s greater opportunity for them to earn points. IHG One Rewards is a competitive and compelling program that offers refreshed and new options.

What is your favorite aspect of the job? Connecting with colleagues and customers around the world. Learning about their markets, customs and culture is fascinating; enjoying the local food and beverage is even better!

What’s the biggest business risk you’ve ever taken? Any time you reorganize a sales force there is always risk around relationships and revenue. Following a highly collaborative framework reduces this work, yet the process always produces a certain level of anxiety.

Who is someone you admire professionally in the travel industry? Horst Schulze, of The RitzCarlton, and Isadore Sharp, of Four Seasons, were both pivotal in the creation of their respective brands, boasting exceptional attention to detail and building the foundation for a luxury travel experience. Chris Cahill, the former CEO of luxury brands at Accor, is the most passionate, humble and respectful leader in the business.

AS A TRAVELER

Tell us about a travel nightmare: Significant travel delays, of hours or days, are always nightmares. Quickly getting over it and utilizing the time to be productive is key.

Share a comical travel experience: I always laugh about a colleague whose foot/leg was in a cast, preventing her from wearing a shoe on that foot, yet she brought seven-plus “pairs” of shoes in her luggage that I had to carry on a weeklong trip. What is your preferred method of travel — planes, trains, automobiles, cruise ships — and why? Where possible, I prefer traveling via train. The ability to take in the journey, get work done and enjoy a nice meal is simply terrific.

What has been the best example of customer service you’ve experienced during your travels? Traveling through India showcased a passion for service like no other I’ve experienced. At every touchpoint there was a genuine, heartfelt welcome and desire to assist. India is a special place for a variety of reasons; service and attention to detail top the list.

Smoke, Char and Guitars

It’s a warm, late-summer evening in Buffalo, and I’m standing in the Snakepit in Highmark Stadium, the area by the stage reserved for friends and family. Sur rounding me are mostly fellow Gen Xers who have come to watch one of the greatest rock acts tear through its catalog while James Hetfield and company race up and down catwalks, their boundless energy belying their age.

For a band that’s pretty much conquered the world, you might wonder what’s left to check off at this point? (In 2013, after a show in Ant arctica, Metallica even became the first musical group to play all seven continents.) Well, rock and roll and whiskey have long been inextricably linked. Metallica’s own foray into brown booze is a liquid collaboration fused to its sound, bor rowing its name from a post-apocalyptic song on its album And Justice for All

In 2018 the band approached legendary Maker’s Mark distiller and spirits consultant Dave Pickerell to join forces on a whiskey with its own stamp. Since his time as a student and professor at West Point — which houses the world’s largest church organ — Pickerell became fascinated with soundwaves, specifically the low reverberating notes that organ emits. “What if we ran a low-frequency sound through the whiskey?” he wondered.

As luck would have it, Metallica had already created a proprietary subwoofer with Meyer Sound to amplify its signature low-frequency notes. The team took that technology to the cellar, where a matured whiskey blend was transferred to black brandy barrels and left to rest with a soundtrack curated by the band. (Each batch gets its own playlist, which fans can download on Spotify.) This sonic enhancement not only coaxes the liquid in and out of the barrel’s staves, increasing wood contact and adding complex notes of vanilla and spice; it’s also believed to actu ally intensify interaction at the molecular level.

Unfortunately, Pickerell passed away soon after the launch. The following year Rob Dietrich, former distiller for Stranahan’s American single malt whiskey, took the helm. At a reception before the concert, I caught up with Dietrich, and we tasted several expressions: the flagship blend of North American bourbons and ryes, and Rye the Lightning, crafted from Kentucky straight rye whiskeys aged five to eight years and double-cask finished in Madeira and rum casks. Dietrich also shared tales of his former life as a roadie. Turns out distilling whiskey for a rock band is a job he was born to do.

The latest releases are part of the label’s limited-edition Masters of Whiskey Series, in which Dietrich pairs up with other renowned distill ers for reimagined craft whiskeys. The first, a rye blend married for up to 14 weeks in Madeira casks, was a collaboration with Drew Kulsveen

of Kentucky’s Willett Distillery. (Even the playlist for the sonic bathing was a dual effort.) The latest, a cask-strength, 6-year-old Kentucky straight Bourbon finished in white Port wine barrels, was created with Wes Henderson, cofounder of Angel’s Envy.

Currently, Blackened American Whiskey is bottled in Colum bus, Ohio, at a facility that doesn’t welcome visitors (sad, but true). However, one day the band hopes to open a distillery and tasting room. In the meantime, fans can pour a dram, cue up one of those playlists and rock on.

Luxuriate in London

Indulge in a spa treatment at The Lanesborough Club & Spa. BY

THE LANESBOROUGH

Hyde Park Corner London SW1X 7TA

United Kingdom tel 44 20 7259 5599 oetkercollection.com

My husband and I recently traveled to London, England, on vacation, our farthest trip since the pandemic started. We were there for longer than a week and planned to squeeze in as much sightseeing as possible during our stay. Ahead of our trip, we knew we would want to mix in some relaxation, so we booked a couple’s massage at The Lanesborough’s spa halfway into our visit.

The property is located on the southeast side of Hyde Park, not far from Buckingham Palace. We arrived at The Lanesborough for our afternoon couple’s massage after a busy morning of sightseeing. The grand luxury mansion is striking. After a busy few days exploring the city, we were more than ready to luxuriate with massages at The Lanesborough Club & Spa.

We weren’t guests of the hotel, so the front desk attendant escorted

us to the spa, located on the property’s lower level. After checking in and filling out the requisite health forms, we each had an attendant escort us to the men’s and women’s locker rooms. The spa facilities are secluded from the rest of the hotel. The walk from the spa check-in desk to the rest of the facilities felt as though we were venturing through a labyrinth to a dreamlike destination.

The bright women’s locker room boasted beautiful hanging floral-inspired lighting fixtures. Several spacious vanities featured large mirrors and a variety of hair and skincare products. The attendant brought me to a locker and showed me how to set the code. The locker included a waffle weave robe and heavy plastic slippers, which I donned before meeting my husband in the relaxation room.

We spent a few moments in the relaxation room enjoying sparkling water ahead of our appointments. The room offers a variety of seating

options, with solo lounge chairs as well as seating grouped together. Curtains in a circular layout in the center of the room provide added privacy. As we finished our drinks, our therapists came to bring us to the treatment room.

Before beginning our massages, our therapists offered different scented oils to choose from and went over problem areas we wanted to target during the massages. We both chose the more neutral scent, and I asked my therapist to focus on my shoulders and neck, which tend to bother me after traveling. They left so we could get situated on the massage tables. As requested, my therapist focused on my shoulders, upper back and neck. She applied medium pressure and worked out tension particularly at my shoulders. To me, the perfect massage is both effective and relaxing. My therapist achieved this, and the treatment left my body feeling fully relieved of tension and in a sublime state of relaxation.

Following our treatments, we stopped in the locker rooms before returning to the relaxation room. We didn’t utilize any of the other spa facilities, as we wanted to see more of the city the rest of the day. We each ended up sitting on opposite sides of the relaxation room for a few moments, shielded by the curtain, before realizing the other was back in the room. Our therapists brought us tea. The unique blend included turmeric, apple, peppermint and rose hips. It was a subtly sweet herbal blend without tasting overpowering. We finished our drinks and slowly returned to the locker rooms to change before departing back through the labyrinth to the outside world.

The Lanesborough Club & Spa is open daily. Guests of the hotel enjoy complimentary access to the gym, hydrotherapy pool and separate

male and female saunas and steam rooms; spa treatments may be booked for an additional fee. A variety of treatments are available including massages, body treatments, body scrubs, Tata Harper facials, manicures, pedicures and full-day offers.

Our experience at The Lanesborough offered the perfect vacation from our vacation. The massages left us feeling relaxed, refreshed and ready to explore London.

Just Desserts

Asweet job, indeed! Executive Pastry Chef Jamie Caudy brings classic technique and modern interpretation to all the pastry op erations for The Peninsula Chicago, including desserts for the hotel’s restaurants, banquet items, retail items in Pierrot Gourmet, specialty cakes and bakery items.

Her journey to The Peninsula began at Le Cordon Bleu before immersing herself in the Minneapolis dining scene at spots like Wolfgang Puck’s 20.21 restaurant, Walker Arts Center, Chambers Kitchen by JeanGeorges Vongerichten and more. In following roles, Caudy oversaw dessert production for large-scale events like the World Series. After a position at Horseshoe Hammond Casino and The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago, Caudy made her way east to Mayflower Inn & Spa in Connecticut. In 2020 she made the return to Chicago and found her home at The Peninsula Chicago.

WHICH FOOD IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? AND ON THE OP POSITE END OF THE SPEC TRUM, WHAT IS ONE INGREDIENT OR FOOD YOU HATE TO USE? Being from Wisconsin, I love cheese curds — the best ones are hand-breaded. I try to avoid using overly processed foods, preferring to incorporate pure ingredients into my recipes for health and flavor reasons.

WHAT DISHES WOULD YOU SERVE AT A PRIVATE DINNER PARTY? I would serve everything in miniature sizes. I’m drawn to dainty and tiny items as I love the reaction I’ve witnessed when presenting items in miniature form (both in professional and personal settings) — the response is one of sheer delight. People gravitate to bite-sized items. Creating food items on a small scale is both a challenge and a joy to see the finished product and reaction.

I love presenting both savory and sweet items in this way as

it brings genuine pleasure from guests as well as giving them “permission” to try everything without any guilt!

WHAT WAS THE FIRST MEAL YOU EVER PREPARED ON YOUR OWN? My sister and I cooked a lot together when we were young. We loved prepar ing elaborate dinners for our parents. One time we made a roasted chicken, mashed potatoes and squash. We left the squash in the oven extra-long by mistake, and it remains a distinc tive flavor memory I still dream about to this day. Since then, cooking has really been about the challenge to create some thing memorable I am excited to share with others.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN ONE DISH, WHICH DISH WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Probably a pavlova, a crunchy meringue. The pavlova is a technical dessert with a hard exterior and a soft interior,

served with berries and a light sauce. It’s light, girly, crunchy and colorful. Texture is important to me. I always make sure there is a crunch because I hate mushy foods. Pavlova can take on so many different forms, and that is what I love about it. It can be molded into tuiles or simply piped before it is dried into that crispy, delicate texture that melts in your mouth.

WHICH CULINARY TREND WOULD YOU LIKE TO DISAPPEAR?

I believe plant-based foods offer a healthy alternative; however, this trend, in some cases, has been taken to the extreme. As a chef I feel it is important to eat whole foods in their purest form versus processed ones when ever possible.

Ultimate Voyage

“Since my last name is Kapitanski, I had to learn how to sail!” joked Boris Kapitanski while telling me about the 45-foot catamaran yacht he chartered with his wife and friends to sail through Croatia. They could have had it all: the captain, the chef, all the water toys, everything anyone would want to make their trip exactly how they desired. Yet they chose to forego most of that. “We like to cook. The kitchen was enclosed with windows on the top deck. We sailed past the most beautiful surround ings,” he reminisced. Jagged cliffs, textured forests and land singing with wildlife drifted by while they grilled freshly caught fish.

“You can go directly through a charter company, or you can use a yacht broker to get a better deal,” Boris said. The Kapitanskis used a France-based company called Interparus. The broker not only found the exact type of catamaran they described, he also used his connec tions to get 40 percent off the charter price. “It was like an apartment at sea,” said Anna Kapitanski.

Where you want to go and what you want to do will determine the vessels available for your adventure. The Kapitanskis and three friends chose Croatia for their week-long vacation. Boris wanted to improve his sailing skills. “It’s the easiest destination for people who

are just starting to learn how to sail. It has protected islands and predictable weather.”

“Croatia is one of the largest private yachting destinations,” said Erin Paul, a cruise specialist at a member agency of CruiseCompete .com. Although she recommends using a travel adviser to book what could be a complex trip, companies such as Ocean Getaways and Pelorus find guests private yachts around the world.

“All Pelorus trips are bespoke, and we can create anything you can dream of. We cater to an audience that has disposable income and wants to spend it on creating memories with their friends and family,” said Jimmy Carroll, cofounder, Pelorus. “We offer the services of a dedicated project manager on the ground; a host of support vessels, submersibles or helicopters; dive guides; expedition photographers; security; or any specialist equipment to take the experience to the next level. Every detail is tailored to the client’s brief, so we can create any experience from scientific research tagging manta rays in Ecuador, adventure treasure hunts and getting up close to endemic species to heliskiing in the remotest of regions.”

Yachts can be powered by motor or sail — or both — and are noted for luxurious accommodations. Maritime experts are flexible

with size distinctions, but many say yachts are vessels more than 40 feet long. Those that exceed 78 feet are superyachts, and ones more than 200 feet are referred to as megayachts. Those even bigger — 300 feet — now comprise the gigayacht family, the most expensive yachts in the world.

Windstar, SeaDream Yacht Club, Emerald Cruises, Star Clippers and the newly launched The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection all offer exclusive yacht sailings for 20–315 people. The fleets consist of super- to gigayachts that look like small cruise ships. These trips are distinguished from cruise lines by the unparalleled level of service avail able to each passenger through a high crew-to-passenger ratio and all the high-end amenities. These yachts are available for private charters to host weddings or company retreats.

The destination, the vessel size and the people on board all determine the level of intimacy on the sailing. “There were restaurants with moors where ships could dock. We’d go to dinner, dancing, and even spend the night,” said Boris. “You really could make your trip as social or as private as you wanted.” Yet Anna recalls they anchored in remote coves where the water was so clear they could see rocks 60 feet below. She spoke of a floating oyster market they stumbled upon during their voyage to the ancient town of Šibenik, where the River Krka empties into the Adriatic Sea. They ordered mussels and oysters from the farmers and, on their way back, picked up the freshest oysters Anna said she’d ever tasted. “The ocean was always our passion,” Boris said, “It wasn’t a matter of if, but when.”

EXCLUSIVE ADVENTURES

Expedition yachts take passengers on adventures to the most remote parts of the planet. Ponant creates voyages worldwide, and smaller companies like Aqua Expeditions and Ecoventura specialize in one area, in their case, the Galápagos Islands. Ecoventura’s two ships, Origin and Theory, are the only vessels sailing the Galápagos Islands under the prestigious Relais & Châteaux banner. They offer two itineraries, each a week long. One focuses on the volcanoes and the other on the shorelines. These trips are designed for people who want to snorkel with penguins and sharks or hike through volcanic formations. Soon, Ecoventura will welcome a new yacht, Evolve, to the family.

THE YEAR

Celebrating 75 years of service, Singapore Airlines dedicated seven decades to building a long-standing reputation for innovation and impeccable customer service, placing it at the forefront of commercial aviation across the globe. Needless to say, the carrier is no stranger to prestigious awards and accolades, receiving top honors for attentive service, premium cabin offerings and technology innovations. That doesn’t mean it rests on its laurels, however. Staying on top requires a constant commitment to elevating the flying experience through innova tion, redesigns and upgrades while anticipating future travel trends.

Beginning service in 1947 as Malayan Airways Limited, the airline operated three flights a week to Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang in a twin-engine Airspeed Consul. In 1963 the company changed its name to Malaysian Airlines Limited and to Malaysia-Singapore Airlines in 1966. It was 50 years ago, in 1972, that the two airlines split into Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airline System.

Over the decades Singapore Airlines ac complished impressive aviation firsts and feats. In 1983 it flew the first Boeing 747-300 from Los Angeles via Tokyo, and in 1989 it became the first airline to fly a Boeing 747-400 commercial flight from Singapore across the Pacific. In-flight dining soared to new heights in 1998 with the launch of the carrier’s International Culinary Panel, composed of five acclaimed chefs from five countries.

Singapore Airlines met the challenges of the 21st century in 2001 as it launched the first audio and video on-demand system for all passengers in all classes. The airline went on to become the first to fly the Airbus A350-900, the world’s largest commercial aircraft, as well as the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner and the Airbus A380.

The fleet continued to grow with expanded routes and services, now operating with more than 150 planes. Today the far-reaching global carrier, a cornerstone member of Star Alliance, boasts not only one of the most modern and fuel-efficient fleets in the air but also some of the most comfortable and spacious aircraft.

Committed to improving service and the in-flight experience, over the years the carrier has unveiled new cabin products for all classes of travel featuring aesthetically pleasing and innovative cabin designs and expanded cuisine and entertainment options, along with launching new technology products geared toward making travel smoother. In 2015 it introduced its new premium economy class. In 2021 the carrier launched new economyand business-class cabins on its Boeing 737-8 fleet, featuring 10 lie-flat business-class seats measuring a generous 22 inches wide and reclining into

a full-flat bed.

Singapore Airlines’ Airbus A380 Suite reaches the pinnacle of luxury and comfort with features that pamper you in what amounts to a hotel room in the sky: leather seats that freely swivel and recline, an adjustable bed, a sliding door and window blinds for privacy, an enhanced entertainment system that saves your playlists for future flights, and a refined gourmet dining experience, plus a spacious lavatory with a sit-down vanity stocked with exquisite toiletries. And for couples traveling together, the dividers between rooms can be removed to create a double suite with a true double bed … the ultimate wow factor.

sense of place that reflects the history and heritage of each location.

Like many hotel brands, Waldorf Astoria began with a single property. But its beginning was far from humble, having opened for business at the height of the Gilded Age in New York City.

WALDORF ASTORIA HOTELS AND RESORTS HOTEL OF THE YEAR

Offering unforgettable experiences and exquisite personal service and culinary expertise, Hilton’s iconic luxury hotel brand continues to expand into landmark destinations around the world, signaling opti mism for the future of luxury travel. Each Waldorf Astoria property not only carries the brand’s legacy of luxury but also creates a unique

In 1893 William Waldorf Astor built the original Waldorf Hotel at 33rd Street and Fifth Avenue. Four years later John Jacob Astor IV, William’s cousin and rival, built the Astoria Hotel next door. Not to be outdone, he built his hotel several stories higher than the Waldorf, sparking a healthy competition to see who could create the best luxury hotel. Eventually the two men agreed to a truce and decided together they could truly be the best. They connected the two build ings through a 300-foot-long marble corridor called Peacock Alley, where tourists and local New Yorkers gathered to gaze at the tycoons, theatrical stars and dignitaries walking by.

From its earliest days, the Waldorf-Astoria stood as a symbol of opulence, becoming the ultimate destination for New York’s socially prominent. Its legendary service set the standard for American hospitality and earned it a global following.

location. Designed in the Art Deco style, it became the largest and tallest hotel in the world and welcomed presidents, royalty, celebrities and cultural luminaries into its grand public spaces and palatial suites.

Throughout its history, WaldorfAstoria has run ahead of the pack, setting many global precedents. It was the first hotel to have electricity on every floor and the first to have private bathrooms in each room — an idea so outrageous at the time, the project was called “Astor’s folly.” It was also the first hotel to offer 24-hour room service, with a rose topping each order.

Conrad Hilton acquired management rights to the hotel in 1949. In 1972 Hilton Hotels Corp. purchased Waldorf-Astoria, expanding the brand to Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts and becoming a luxury division of Hilton.

Today the brand operates more than 30 hotels and resorts in 15 countries and ter ritories, but those numbers will change over the next few years, with several properties in the pipeline. Each new property will naturally honor the legendary characteristics at the heart of the brand: highly personalized, elegant service and iconic environments.

Reflecting the company’s commitment to expanding into the world’s most sought-after destinations, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts will make its Australia debut in 2025, with construction already underway on Waldorf Astoria Sydney. The 28-floor, 220-room luxury hotel will open as part of the One Circular Quay mixed-use development and will be de signed to permeate a sense of lightness and calm across elegant interiors. The hotel will include a spa, the signature Peacock Alley lounge, two restaurants honoring Sydney’s gastronomic legacy and a rooftop bar.

The Waldorf Astoria brand will also debut in Vietnam in 2025 with the opening of Waldorf Astoria Hanoi in a conver sion of Hilton Hanoi Opera hotel. The new 187-room hotel will feature four dining concepts including Peacock Alley, a rooftop lounge and two other restaurants; a spa; a fitness center; and a pool.

Hilton’s expansion into Asia will include three additional Waldorf Astoria hotels: Waldorf Astoria Kuala Lumpur (2023), Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan (2024) and Waldorf Astoria Xi’an (2025).

Meanwhile, the iconic Waldorf Astoria New York — often called “the greatest of them all” — remains closed until 2023 as it undergoes a $1 billion makeover. The extensive renovation will introduce a new residential component of condominiums within the storied hotel while restoring the grandeur of the exquisite Art Deco landmark, including a renewed façade that will bring back the splendor of the original design.

For standing the test of time and maintaining a consistent standard of luxury and service while pursuing innovations, we are delighted to honor Singapore Airlines and Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts as this year’s winners.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Travel

Global Traveler announces the winners of the 2022 Outstanding Diversity & Inclusion in Travel awards. BY

Outstanding Diversity & Inclusion in Travel, Airline: United Airlines PHOTO: © UNITED AIRLINES

Global Traveler first launched awards to honor the airline, cruise line and hotel brand best representing and supporting diversity and inclusion within the travel industry last year. Now, continuing the awards for the second year, Global Traveler looked at many airlines, cruise lines and hotel brands to see which companies enacted the most changes toward promoting diversity and inclusion.

In the context of the travel industry, diversity entails addressing blind spots in ethnic disparities, from providing resources to travel industry leaders to educating and launching new initiatives within the company, inspiring other companies to enact similar practices. By extension, inclusion within the travel industry means welcoming all individuals regardless of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability and

age, and ensuring access to all of the resources available to fully engage in the company.

Analyzing each airline, cruise line and hotel brand to find which companies best committed themselves to diversity and inclusion within and surrounding their brand is no easy task. Many companies have made great strides to embrace diversity and inclusive measures. Global Traveler staff and Advisory Board members nominated travel pro viders, considering an array of factors and elements. After researching various factors relating to the nominated com panies’ equity, diversity and inclusion practices and having our Globility Board, a focus group of our subscribers, chime in, Global Traveler is proud to announce the winners.

This year, United Airlines wins Global Traveler’s award for Outstanding Diversity & Inclusion in Travel, Airline. The airline earns this recognition for its many steps toward achieving a more diverse and inclusive work environment for both employees and customers.

The airline continued its efforts from 2021 to follow through with the company’s DEI initiatives and reliability. This perseverance continued even during a chaotic travel

season. United Airlines’ forward-thinking initiatives further heightened its rank as a DEI leader. The airline launched an Aviate pilot career program and flight-training academy. Accompanying these new programs, United also focuses on employee engagement and talent development. United does not passively welcome DEI. Rather, the airline makes it part of its DNA, bringing people together, both employees and customers. The airline strives to make all employees feel safe in order to be their authentic selves.

The Outstanding Diversity & Inclusion in Travel, Hotel award goes to Hilton. Over the last year alone Hilton has continued to expand outside the United States, growing particularly in the Caribbean and Latin America. The hotel brand increased its portfolio by 190 hotels in 2022, with 15 percent of the brand’s presence now located outside of the United States.

DiversityInc, a data platform providing insights, solu tions, services and education for organizations, named Hilton the top-ranking company in its Top 50 Companies for Diversity list. Additionally, the hotel brand held the top spot on the Top Company specialty lists for Latino,

Native American, Pacific Islander, people with disabilities and veteran executives.

Committed to achieving global gender parity and 25 percent ethnic diversity at corporate leadership levels in the United States by 2027, Hilton stands by the belief hospitality possesses the power to create a greater understanding between communities, ultimately uniting them.

Hilton partners with historically Black colleges and universities as well as minority-focused organizations to develop a diverse source of talent. In fact, the hotel brand boasts 39 chapters of nine Team Member Resource Groups, further helping drive change and innova tion within the company. Hilton stands out from its competitors with its unprecedented public sharing of its internal diversity numbers to track progress of its initiatives. In remaining transparent and setting meaningful targets, Hilton links progress directly to corporate leader ship compensation. Hilton carried out video interviews even before the pandemic, allowing for a more diverse group of candidates.

For cruises, Hurtigruten wins the Outstanding Diversity & Inclusion in Travel, Cruise award. Hurtigruten is best known for its educational and adventurous Antarctic expeditions. Earlier this year the cruise line created a new Black Travel Advisory Board. This group consists of Black men and women working to further promote diver

sity and inclusion within the cruise line. Hurtigruten’s six-member board includes respected leaders like Martinique Lewis, president, Black Travel Alliance; Stephanie Hones, founder and CEO, Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance; and Naledi Khabo, CEO, African Tourism Association.

Hurtigruten also commits to working with Black content creators in every media campaign. These different steps allow the cruise line to amplify the voices of Black travelers and employees. In addition to these unparalleled initiatives, Hurtigruten also publicly committed to funding Black-led organizations in tourism, with $5,000 going to each inaugural member’s venture of choice.

United Airlines, Hilton and Hurtigruten have set a new standard within the travel industry when it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion. Such advancements serve not only to help these specific companies, their employees and customers, but also seek to inspire other airlines, cruise lines and hotel brands. In reaching new heights in diversity and inclusion, other companies will aim to meet this same standard. This year’s winners pave the way for a better future for all, but in order for this change to be permanent, all companies within the travel industry must commit to DEI initiatives, as well. Change comes from within, and this year’s winners prove including all and embracing diversity is the way of the future.

Boundless Berlin

A freewheeling spirit lures visitors and startups to Germany’s hip trendsetter.

Asprawling city of 3.57 million, Berlin covers 60 square miles and comprises 12 official districts. Berliners — even those born after the fall of the Wall in 1989 — still orient themselves (and give directions) using the former Wall. In the middle, explore mod and arty Mitte, home to some of the capital’s most fascinating museums and historical architec ture. Trendy family neighborhood Prenzlauer Berg, dotted with children’s shops, playgrounds and kid-friendly cafés, lies to the east. Still-gritty-around-the edges Friedrichshain (a formerly decrepit East Berlin neighborhood) is newly cool, with bars and clubs and East Side Gallery, a preserved section of the Wall. On the west side: the ever-chic Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and the lately gentri fied Kreuzberg, home to the Jüdisches (Jewish) Museum and the infamous Checkpoint Charlie.

According to Startup Heatmap Report, Berlin ranks as one of the world’s top locations for fintech (financial technology). Startups (now global brands) like Delivery Hero and SoundCloud had their origins in Berlin. Silicon Allee is one of the many tech com munities in Berlin that facilitates the tech startup scene in a way the U.S. Silicon Valley does by conceptualizing ideas and connecting the community. Every month, Silicon Allee hosts a meetup to bring techies together to talk about their companies and pitch ideas to each other. It should be noted 44 percent of all new entrepreneurs in Berlin are non-German. High-profile global brands like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Deloitte, IBM, Accenture, BASF, Apple and Oracle maintain a big presence here, with a total of 10,000-plus employees. Tesla recently announced its investment of $11 billion in a new Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory.

CHECKING IN WITH BURKHARD KIEKER

What would you suggest business travelers — espe cially first-time visitors — see and do in Berlin to get a sense of the city’s culture and diversity?

Visitors come to Berlin for the culture, the authentic history and our lifestyle. After exploring some of the major highlights — such as Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, the new Humboldt Forum and sites pertaining to our city’s history — I suggest visiting some of our major museums. The five museums on Museum Island are world-renowned for their collections.

Berlin’s welcoming culture is reflected in the diversity of our population. There is a reason Berlin is called the “City of Freedom”; it’s a place where everyone is welcome to be and express who they are. The diversity is best experi enced by exploring our 12 neighborhoods, each presenting different faces and distinct stories.

How have Berlin and Germany become leaders in sustainability, especially sustainable tourism?

Sustainability is a core theme for Berlin, and as the city’s destination marketing and management organization, visitBerlin takes an active role in the development of positive, responsible and sustainable tourism. We work closely with our partners in the tourism and congress industry to integrate sustainability criteria in their product development and to secure city- and population-friendly tourism. VisitBerlin is a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and currently holds the fifth place among the international metropolises in the Global Destination Sustainability Index.

Please speak to Berlin as a wellness and health destination.

Berlin welcomes some 17,000–21,000 inter national patients each year who come for the excellent medical care and high-end medical services. Many of our state-of-the-art hospitals are specifically equipped to cater to the needs of international patients. Berlin is also one of the world’s leading destinations for medical con gresses, which make up about 14 percent of all conventions in the German capital. Teaming up with Health Capital Berlin Brandenburg, visitBerlin supplies initial information on medical ser vices, hospitals, clinics and specialists especially focused on providing health care for international patients.

What is the outlook for business and investment opportunities in Berlin?

Berlin is a creative metropolis, a startup hub and an innovative technology and science location — and among Germany’s most dynamic eco nomic regions. We offer business and technology support for companies, investors and scientific in stitutions in this internationally attractive location. This is managed by our sister organization, Berlin Partner. It supports, among others, companies and scientific institutions with expertise, provides information on funding opportunities and advises on the search for suitable locations and highly qualified staff. Beyond that, we work with a wide alliance of business institutions for more interna tional flight connections to Berlin. The initiative aims to persuade foreign airlines to take up nonstop, long-haul routes to the German capital.

DIVERSIONS

In summer, Berliners’ pastimes include strolling, cycling (390 miles of bike paths) and lingering in outdoor cafés. In winter, enjoy the city’s non-stop nightlife and countless world-class festivals like Berlinale International Film Festival.

Berlin also boasts more than 180 museums. Stop in the Gemäldegalerie to see more than a dozen Rembrandts; the Ägyptisches Museum to view the sublime, 3,000-year-old bust of Queen Nefertiti; and the 4,200-foot-long East Side Gallery, an open-air gallery with mural- and graffiti-decorated remains of the Berlin Wall. Neue Nationalgalerie, designed by the legendary Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and dedicated to early 20th-century art, recently reopened after an extensive refresh.

Book a three-hour boat tour on the Spree River to down a local brew while admiring the amazing city views. The Reichstag, topped by a monumental glass dome, is worth a visit. Make dinner reservations at the rooftop restaurant for spectacular vistas of Berlin at night. Berlin has more than 7,000 restaurants (23 with Michelin stars) and the highest number of plant-based and sustainable restaurants in Europe. Cafés are a religion in Berlin. There’s one on nearly every corner and inside museums, hotels and cinemas — from the simple stehcafé where you literally stand for a quick snack to stylish joints

where Berliners sit, working on their laptops.

Dip into high-end retail stores and exclusive boutiques on Kurfürstendamm (called Ku’damm by locals), widely regarded as Berlin’s Champs-Élysées.

Ballroom dancing is a thing. Clärchens Ballhaus, a still-glam 100-year-old grande dame is a favorite of both hip young scenesters and 80-something seniors. Don’t leave Berlin without taking in a cabaret show at Tipi am Kanzlermat with its original mirrored marquee from the 1920s.

Heart of the South

Birmingham, Alabama, was named for the city in the English Midlands that kept the fires burning, warmed the homes and made much of the steel for the United Kingdom’s industrial revolution. Decades later, the American city also made steel, so much of it, in fact, it became known as the “Magic City” for steel production, and the moniker stuck. But today’s Magic City makes more than steel, taking the raw product a few more steps to become a major center for automobile parts manufacturing and more, including Honda, Mercedes-Benz and U.S. Steel. Thanks to local leader ship and long-term planning, the magic still works for Birmingham, as evidenced by its role hosting The World Games 2022 last summer.

This grand city of the American South, known for its civil rights

activism of the 1960s, now boasts 17 key projects pegged for the future development of the city, and not one involves an expansion of the auto manufacturing sector. Look for major developments in hospitality, residential, retail, green space and the burgeoning culinary scene.

A key historic site in the 4th Avenue Historic District, A.G. Gaston Motel is a project of the City of Birmingham and the National Trust for Historic Preservation and a part of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument. The restoration will include a coffee shop, dining room and space for community meetings.

The Magic City actively expanded its medical facilities in recent years, and in 2022 the new Grandview Physicians Plaza II medical center opened, adding 200,000 square feet in seven new stories, a $50 million addition.

Set to open in late 2022, the historic Frank Nelson Building, located on 20th Street, has been renovated. Built in 1903, The Frank will offer restaurants, retail space and 180 studio and one-bedroom apartments.

From Bayer Properties, the developers of the popular Birmingham Pizitz project, the historic Hardwick on the Rotary Trail will use the existing structure to anchor a mixed-use development of restaurants, workspace and retail space.

More beer is on tap in Birmingham’s future. Ghost Train Brewing Company is opening another location at the M2 complex. The 70,000-square-foot Ghost Train @ M2 will contain an event space, a music venue, an expanded tap room and light retail.

One of several luxury condominiums under construction in Birmingham, The Tramont will offer a choice of one-, two- and three-bedroom homes in the Highland-Redmont Park neighborhood, one of the most desirable in the city. Completion is set for mid-2023.

Parker & Associates, a Black-owned local development company, acquired three build ings in downtown Ensley for a restaurant called The Andrea and several related food stalls and markets, with a goal of bringing more variety and food options to the Ensley commu nity.

Announced in 2019, Mercantile on Morris has been a key development for downtown Birmingham at 1st Avenue North and Morris Avenue. New residential units and thousands of square feet of retail space have been leased and rented, including several new restaurants. In 2022, developer Orchestra Partners began work on the second phase, including more condos, retail space and a rental storage facility.

Built in a pedestrian alley known as the Aisle, Urban Supply is set to move on to its final phase: a hub for food, fitness and entertainment in Parkside. Located in several warehouses, Urban Supply will finish with approximately 100,000 square feet of commercial space next to the Good People Brewery.

City Walk BHAM, Birmingham’s newest city park, will span 10 blocks under the new I-59/20 bridge, providing 31 acres of pedestrian-friendly space with walking trails, dog parks, skate zones, market areas and water features.

Looking ahead to 2023, Birmingham continues to spin its special magic.

SCENIC DRIVES

Take a quick 101-mile trip north of Birmingham on I-65, and suddenly you’ll see a spaceship in your path! Huntsville, Alabama, is home to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, known as “Rocket City” to locals and Alabama’s No. 1 visitor attrac tion. With all the exhibits up and running, visitors can witness the key elements Dr. Wernher von Braun and his team brought together to put two men on the moon on July 20, 1969. You’ll also get a close-up look at NASA’s current plans to travel to Mars on the Space Launch System, the world’s most powerful rocket. Now a Smith sonian affiliate, Rocket City will benefit from a number of traveling exhibits covering everything from Star Wars, prehistoric mammals and animal robots to the current models of the SLS.

Many other attractions include a planetarium, 3-D movies and a preview of the Space Camp, where more than 750,000 students have trained through simulated space missions. Five of these students (and adults) have gone on to become astronauts … and all five were women.

Tale of Two Cities

Tel Aviv is two cities. The official municipality name is Tel Aviv-Yafo. Tel Aviv itself is unusually young for this part of the world, founded in 1909. Yafo, on the other hand, (more widely known as Jaffa), claims a history stretching back nearly 4,000 years.

Tel Aviv’s duality doesn’t end there. This major international city proves so compact it feels like a neighborhood. Israel’s dynamic eco nomic hub, complete with prestige skyscrapers, is also a laid-back seaside resort with some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean.

Unsurprisingly, the city offers a wide range of options for breakfast. In Sarona Market, close to the business district, check out the branch

of Benedict Bakery, a citywide chain that proudly lives up to its slogan: “All about Breakfast.” It’s an ideal place for a breakfast meeting, though be prepared to be distracted by the sheer variety of choices. Fruit, cereal, salad, pancakes, English fry-up, Spanish frittata, omelets, traditional Israeli breakfast … they’re all on the menu.

Alternatively, head down to Manta Ray, located right on the beach. From a table on the terrace you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the waking Mediterranean while choosing from a menu that leans toward light, healthy options.

Modest size and largely flat terrain make the city easy to get around either on foot or by bicycle. Tel-O-Fun offers electric bicycles, which

you can rent via app from dozens of bike stations scattered across the city for $5 per day, with a 30-minute limit on each use.

At some stage during your visit you should make time to lose yourself among the narrow alleys of old Jaffa. The underground visitor center in Kedumim Square brings Jaffa’s history to life with artifacts and full-sized video projections. Jaffa’s flea market, a bustling hub of old-time commerce, offers a great place to stop for a mid-morning coffee or snack. Hummus Danny, an unpretentious café with sidewalk tables, serves several chickpea-based dishes, including hummus and falafel.

While Jaffa exudes timelessness, Tel Aviv has been unashamedly new and brash from the start. Building it upon what was an expanse of sand dunes, planners and architects were able to experiment with the latest ideas. They lined the streets with trees and interspersed them with parks, designing many of the buildings in the functional Bauhaus style, giving rise to the popular nickname, the White City.

The Norman Tel Aviv, one of the finest hotels in all of Israel, puts you right in the heart of the Bauhaus district. Much of the

city lies within easy walking distance of this strategic location. The hotel’s Alena Restaurant offers a stylish venue for a business lunch; eat indoors or outside under palm tree shade. The menu features Mediterranean dishes made from local ingredients.

Just two blocks from The Norman explore one of the city’s most important thoroughfares, Rothschild Boulevard. This tree-lined street, which passes through the financial district, is known for its art galleries and boutiques.

Despite its compact size, Tel Aviv boasts a green recreation area — Yarkon Park — larger than New York’s Central Park. Set on both banks of the Yarkon River to the north of downtown, this leafy 927acre expanse offers sporting facilities, formal gardens and an outdoor concert venue that has hosted some of the world’s biggest stars.

It also provides some quirky options for entertaining colleagues or clients. TLV Balloon features a tethered hot-air balloon which carries up to 30 passengers to a maximum height of 300 feet, affording breathtaking views of the city. Flights last around 15 minutes and operate 10 a.m.–7 p.m. For something more strenuous, test your skill at iClimb TLV, a 60-foot climbing wall designed for all abilities, from beginners to experts. At the eastern end of the park, a large lake offers motorboat or rowboat rentals.

While Yarkon Park provides respite from the frenetic pace of the city, it is not without big city conveniences, including a branch of Benedict Bakery. Benedict’s kiosk close to the boating lake serves a range of picnic favorites. You can collect your picnic at the kiosk, or, if you have geolocation on your phone, it can be delivered by golf cart to wherever you are in the park.

At the western end of Yarkon Park, where the Yarkon River meets the sea, you’ll find Old Tel Aviv Port, with its waterside boutiques and cafés. Recharge here in late afternoon and sense the change of gears as the city of day transforms into the city of night.

The UNESCO World Heritage neighborhood of Balat rivals İstanbul’s Old City for its historic significance, with an added splash of color. Its cobbled hilly streets boast a full rainbow of houses, cafés, restau rants and churches painted in pinks, reds, oranges, yellows, greens and blues — parts even surpassing my native San Francisco’s steep, colorful corridors. The most vibrant stretch of homes, dating anywhere from 50 to 200 years old, runs along Kiremit Caddesi.

Located in an area known as the Golden Horn, situated on an estuary flowing into the Bosporus, Balat served as a refuge in the late 15th century for Jews escaping Spain and Portugal. Balat once housed 11 syna gogues, but an earthquake and subsequent fires in 1894 drove away many Jews. By 1965 an estimated 640 Jewish families lived in Balat, and today’s numbers are far lower.

Though the number of Jews in Balat declined, two main synagogues remain. One of the oldest in Türkiye, the 15th-century Sephardic Ahrida Synagogue, was built by Romantiotes, a Jewish community from Ohrid in North Macedonia. Inside sits a bema shaped like the prow of a ship. Yanbol Synagogue was built in the 18th century by Sephardic Jews from Bulgaria. Acquire permission ahead of time to enter the synagogues, or consider the options for Jewish heritage tours.

The Bulgarian St. Stephen’s Orthodox Church recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation before reopening in 2018. It’s known as Bulgarian Iron Church, since it was cast in iron in Vienna before being put together in İstanbul in 1871. Surp Hiresdagabed Armenian Church, also in Balat, transferred to the Armenians in 1628 from the Greeks and was renovated in 1835. Balat also offers views of the red brick Phanar Greek Orthodox College, opened in 1454.

As impressive as its religious past, Balat today draws tourists and locals looking to browse its shops and people watch from its myriad cafés, many running along Vodina Caddesi and Yıldırım Caddesi. It’s easy to spend half a day wandering its art shops and bookstores.

For neighborhood cafés and eateries, favorites include Balat Sahil, a traditional tavern (meyhane) known for its fish, mezze and local wine or raki. Forno is popular for its lahmacun, a Middle Eastern flatbread and meat dish. Another enticing spot is Maison Balat, a café inside an antique store, worth a

stop for its homemade cherry juice. Balat offers a respite from the bustle of İstanbul’s tourist hot spots while it brings to life a colorful history all its own.

Explore Gilded Age mansions and more in Newport, Rhode Island. BY TERESA BITLER

Originally a thriving Colonial seaport, Newport became the summer playground for the Gilded Age’s elite in the late 1880s. Today their mansions dot the coast of Aquidneck Island, and their favorite pastimes — sailing and tennis — still dominate the city’s recreational offerings. In fact, Newport hosted the first U.S. Open tennis championship in 1881 and golf tourna ment in 1895 and hosted the America’s Cup from 1930 to 1983. You can experience most of Newport on your own, including the mansions, but don’t rule out a guided tour or two when you visit.

For a good introduction to Newport, cruise “The Drive,” as it’s locally known. This 10-mile route starts at the intersection of Thames Street and Wellington Avenue in downtown Newport and passes Fort Adams, the 3.5mile Cliff Walk and Gilded Age mansions. If you don’t have a car, book a guided walking tour offered by Newport Historical Society on topics ranging from the city’s role in the American Revolution to the wealthy families who summered here.

The opulent “cottages” once owned by the Vanderbilts and their peers offer both guided and self-guided options. Download the Newport Mansions app to your smart device before you go and bring earbuds for a self-guided audio tour of The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms and Rosecliff. Or purchase a guided behind-the-scenes tour of The Breakers or The Elms. You can also visit Kingscote at your own pace and Hunter House on a guided tour.

Fort Adams State Park gives you the option to tour its military fortifications with or without a guide. With a guide, you’ll see the officers’ quarters and underground tunnels. Without a guide, some areas, like the tunnels, are off-limits. On Mondays take a self-guided tour of the Eisenhower House, the Summer White House during Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidency.

Recreation has always played an important role in Newport. To learn more about sailing in Newport, visit the new Sailing Museum and the National Sailing Hall of Fame. The International Tennis Hall of Fame is also located here. If you prefer walking, the 2.5-mile Fort Adams Bay Walk loops around Fort Adams, offering views of lighthouses and yacht clubs. The paved Cliff Walk combines views of the ocean with views of Gilded Age mansions.

Island Oasis

Escape to the remote paradise of the Maldives.

All I could think as my water taxi sped through the azure shallows was I had been prepar ing for this moment my entire life. I stepped off the boat and let my bare feet sink into the soft, white sand on Gulhifushi Island — one of the nearly 200 uninhabited islands of the Maldives — where I smirked at how I finally had an answer to the question that had been replaying in my head since childhood. With one look in my bag, I whispered to myself, “A good book, sunscreen and a bottle of water.”

BY

ALPERT Tropical Delights: Aerial view of beautiful Maldives beach (above), and (opposite page) Sea Underwater Restaurant

As it turns out, two of my three “things I’d bring with me on a deserted island” weren’t even neces sary since I had booked this experience through my resort’s concierge. The island was small, populated only by a smattering of palms and a thatched cabana that offered shade. Every detail had been thought of for me, and I glanced around the petite island to find a plate of fresh fruit, a pitcher of ice water and a carafe of hot coffee waiting on a makeshift table near a basket with plush towels and snorkel gear. I had the entire island to myself for the whole day, and unlike the S.O.S.-signal scenarios I had mentally rehearsed since childhood, I settled into my spot in the sand with my book and took in the peaceful quiet … with no desire to be rescued.

It’s easy to kick back in the Maldives, where staying connected or disconnecting entirely is a choice, not a requirement, thanks to 5G coverage that extends to nearly every corner of this archipelagic nation. Set in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, just southwest of Sri Lanka and India, the Maldives consists of upwards of 1,200 coral islands, ranging in size and degree of inhabitation, that are grouped into 26 atolls. In general, the northern atolls receive less annual rain than their southern counterparts, while the southern tend to get shielded better from strong winds, but it’s less of a conversation about which atoll or island is best as it is about which resort is right for you.

Among the more than 150 resorts — most occupying their own private islands — you’ll find everything from budget-friendly overwater villas (Kandima Maldives Resort) to subaquatic suites that allow you to drift to sleep in a private aquarium (Conrad Maldives Rangali Island). Regardless of which resort you choose, all international arrivals take place at Velana International Airport on Hulhulé Island in the North Malé Atoll, where it’s simply a boat, seaplane or helicopter ride to your chosen accommodations.

Everything revolves around water in the Maldives, where you can spend your days either gazing out on the crystal-clear water or getting immersed within it. Guided fishing trips are often run by locals who can explain the traditional Maldivian line-fishing technique or lead you into a reeling battle with sailfish, wahoo or even giant trevally. Most of the top resorts offer a full range of watersports, with jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking and wind surfing just a concierge call away, but East Wind Watersports keeps an inventory of aquatic gear if those options ever aren’t available.

Scuba diving in the Indian Ocean is a bucketlist experience for many people, but even just snorkeling in the Maldives could put you face to face with some of the ocean’s most remarkable creatures, including sea turtles, whale sharks, nurse sharks, dolphins and more. The nation is home to the largest recorded reef manta ray population in the world, which you can best observe at the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Hanifaru Bay in the Baa Atoll.

Join the Festivities

December may reside at the heart of the holiday season in much of the Western world, but the winter celebrations are hardly the only festivities worth your attention. Both the globe and calendar are packed with major cultural festivals, often celebrating new beginnings of various forms, and while many are intimate and humble, several prove dynamic and accessible. As the adrenaline of December dies down after New Year’s Eve, ward off January doldrums by making plans to attend some of the world’s most approachable cultural festivals throughout the year.

Songkran, the official festival of the traditional Thai New Year in April, is typically marked with several days of celebration chiefly centered around water. Instead of drinking it, though, you’ll toss it, sprinkle it and most likely wear buckets of it. While the wet traditions have strong religious roots, including Bathing the Buddha to symbolize purification, most of today’s public festivities turn into total water wars with friends and strangers in the streets. You will not pass the busiest neighborhoods of urban areas without a thorough drenching, especially at night.

While celebrating the divine love of Krishna in Hindu tradition, Holi marks the beginning of spring in India, typically in March. Observers burn large fires to destroy evil spirits the night before the main event, when celebrants fling colored powders at each other while parading, covering entire towns and residents in vibrant hues. Similarly color-splashed but at the oppo site end of the new-beginnings spectrum, Mexico’s Día de los Muertos honors ancestors with exuberant cemetery displays and elaborate home altars in November. While much of this tradition was historically honored locally, today the celebrations are largely public, and com munities often encourage visitors to participate in the festivities.

You’ll find Carnival celebrations in dozens of countries worldwide, but the best known are in Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans (yes, Mardi Gras) and throughout the Caribbean. Marking the approach of the austere Catholic period of Lent, Carnival unleashes tremendous debauchery with shimmering costumes, copious drinking and all the indulgences you could imagine. Over-the-top parades and parties all hallmark this celebration.

Finally, Munich’s Oktoberfest celebrates a new beginning of an entirely different nature, originally honoring a royal wedding that occurred more than 200 years ago. Today’s two-week festival is more of a beer-fueled free-for-all celebrating all things autumn and many things German, with visitors bringing the festive crowd to a staggering 6 million-plus each year.

Up and Coming

Airports rebound with new and enhanced facilities in 2023. BY MARY MELNICK

Airports around the world are rebuild ing, keeping up with the latest technology and expanding in order to create the easiest, safest and best experience for travelers. In 2023 expect to see not only new terminals but also entirely new airports.

With a brand-new develop ment set to open on the west coast of Saudi Arabia, the Red Sea is one of the world’s most ambitious regenerative tourism destinations, forging a new relationship between luxury tourism and the natural world. Surrounded by the world’s fourth-largest barrier reef system, the site will offer worldleading experiences across its archipelago of more than 90 pristine islands, idyllic beaches, mountain canyons and historic cultural sites.

The Red Sea International Airport is set to open in late December 2023. With 80 percent of the world’s population able to reach the destination in less than eight hours, location plays a significant role. The airport will consist of five pods, or departure lounges, representing the desert’s dunes. Architecture firm Foster + Partners leads the design which will feature greenery spots where travelers can relax before or between flights.

As an alternative to the existing Quatro de Fevereiro Airport, the new Luanda Airport, also known as Angola International Airport, is set to open December 2023. Construction, handled by Odebrecht, has been ongoing since 2008. In June 2022 the new airport launched its first test flight with a TAAG Boeing 777-300ER. With 60 percent of the project complete, the airport is on track for its projected opening. The structure will include three terminals and two runways with the capacity to handle Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 aircraft and is designed to accommodate 15 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo annually.

When visiting Tulum, Mexico, travelers currently fly into Cancun International Airport, the closest at about an hour from the destination, but that may change in 2023. As of now, Tulum International Airport is set to open late December 2023, although the date may be pushed back due to low funding. The purpose of this new airport is to help ease traffic

at Cancun International.

Other than fully new airports, new, enhanced terminals will open across the United States throughout 2023. The highly anticipated terminal debuts include the late spring opening of Kansas City Interna tional Airport’s new Single Terminal, Orlando International Airport’s South Terminal, the Delta Sky Way at Los Angeles International Airport, and new American Airlines and United Airlines Satellite Concourses at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

According to the Intercultural Outreach Initiative, ecotourism came onto the travel scene in the early 1980s “… as a type of travel for people who wanted to learn about different and exotic environments without causing the environmental harm or damage associated with other forms of tourism.” Fast-forward to today, and a Sustainable Travel Study from Expedia Group Media Solutions shows “nearly 3 in 4 travelers would choose a destination, lodging, or transportation option that supports the local community and culture, even if it was more expensive.”

Here, we take a look at airlines and hotels leading the charge in sustainability efforts.

More than 30 airlines affiliated with the Inter national Air Transport Association offer carbon offsetting to passengers “… to ‘neutralize’ their proportion of an aircraft’s carbon emissions on a particular journey by investing in carbon reduction projects.” To that end, LeafScore, a website fighting climate change by helping consumers make greener purchasing decisions, published “The 6 Most Sustainable Airlines for Flying Green in 2022” this year. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines ranked No. 1, fol lowed by Alaska Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, Cathay Pacific (aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050), Delta Air Lines and American Airlines.

Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Swiss International Air Lines all committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This fall, Southwest celebrated one year of its carbon offset program, becoming the first U.S. airline with a carbon offset offer with loyalty points and contribution match to offset its carbon emissions. Since 2020, Etihad Airways has reduced its total carbon emissions by 56 percent; restructured its fleet strategy to focus on modern, fuel-efficient aircraft; and launched the first aircraft carbon offset program in the Middle East. Additionally, Virgin Atlantic equips its aircraft with the most efficient engines and state-ofthe-art technology designed to save fuel and reduce emissions, delivering a 20 percent reduction in fleet carbon emissions to date.

When it comes to sustainability in hotels, tremendous strides have been made, starting with Hotel Marcel New Haven, opened in May. The hotel is anticipated to be the first net-zero hotel in the United States, the first Passive House-certified hotel in the country and one of fewer than a dozen LEED Platinum-certified hotels in the country.

Earlier this year, the Hawai‘i Green Business Program recognized five of Outrigger Hospitality Group’s properties for exceptional environmen tal stewardship in light of its energy efficiency and sustainable business practices to advance the Aloha State’s clean energy and sustainability

goals. Outrigger applied for Green Seal certification for all seven of its owned or managed properties in Hawai‘i, making it the first in Hawai‘i to commit to earning the prestigious certification.

Opened in January, Rosewood São Paulo sourced all building materials within Brazil and committed to using 100 percent renewable energy within its first year of operation. Additionally, HomeExchange Collection, the luxury offering launched this summer, will take part in its parent company’s dedication to calculate its carbon footprint every year; the company intends to contribute to global carbon neutrality with the GoodPlanet Foundation by investing in social and environmental projects.

In Michigan, Daxton Hotel committed to The PLEDGE on Food Waste, an initiative aiming to limit the amount of food thrown away.

Gravity Haus, a “social club for the modern adventurer” and a model of globally conscious hospitality, will open two new Colorado properties soon in Steamboat Springs and Aspen.

Last year, Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria, British Columbia, became the first hotel in North America to sign on to The Climate Pledge and committed to meet The Paris Agreement by 2040, a decade ahead of the agreement’s deadline.

A World at Play

Follow your favorite sporting events in 2023. BY

Fresh off the back of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 2023 sporting calendar gets off to a strong start with the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne Jan. 16–29, followed by the start of rugby’s Six Nations Championship, with the last round of matches played March 18 in Edinburgh, Rome and Dublin.

Next up is the French Open tennis championship in Paris May 28–June 11, or, alternatively, jet off to El Salvador for the ISA World Surfing Games in El Sunzal May 30–June 7. Soccer fans will do well to score a ticket to the UEFA Champions League final June 10 in İstanbul, Türkiye, but anyone can turn up at the side of the road to support the cyclists of the Tour de France July 1–23, with the first stage starting from Bilbao in Spain before riders wind their way to the finish line in Paris.

Head over the Channel to London mid-tour to catch a bit of

the Wimbledon tennis championships, with the final taking place July 16, or jet across the world for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, hosted across nine cities in Australia and New Zealand, including Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland, July 20–Aug. 20.

Back in Europe, the Rugby World Cup takes place in France Sept. 8–Oct. 28, with host cities including Paris, Bordeaux and Marseille presenting plenty of opportunities for a mini tour of the country by car or on the high-speed TGV train service. Next, the Ryder Cup golf competition reignites the U.S.–Europe rivalry at Marco Simone Golf Club near Rome, Italy, Sept. 29–Oct. 1, and it’s worth checking the schedules to see if either the S.S. Lazio or A.S. Roma soccer club is playing at home that weekend. Finally, cricket fans will want to book tickets to India for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, with matches dotted around various cities throughout October; the final plays on Nov. 26.
