ECUADOR Our History In 2001, the Fundación de Damas Calderonenses (FUNDAC) invited Global Volunteers to initiate a volunteer service program in Calderón, the northeastern-most area in the city of Quito. FUNDAC’s mission is to offer social services – food, education, vaccinations, and more – to children from twelve months to three years of age who are in vulnerable economic situations. Through the Our Lady of Carmen Childhood Development Centers #1 and #2, FUNDAC ensures low-income children are offered the care they need. Over the past 19 years, Global Volunteers has sent 176 teams to Ecuador with more than 1630 volunteers, and, in this year alone, these volunteers donated approximately 1,384 hours of childcare, labor, Conversational English lessons, and more.

SERVICE Our Work Projects and their Impact Global Volunteers delivers the 12 Essential Services and supports the Sustainable Development Goals in three categories: Health, Hunger, and Cognitive Development. In Ecuador, volunteers work with FUNDAC in each of the three areas with a primary focus being child development and care.

Childcare

In 2018, volunteers provided 280 children with 730 hours of childcare. By delivering psychosocial support through games, arts and crafts, and verbal engagement, volunteers help the centers’ youngest children to receive important socialization support.

Nutrition All 280 children were fed nutritious food by the volunteers in 2018. These meals provided the necessary vitamins and minerals for their healthy growth.

Conversational English In 2018, volunteers donated 25 hours of instruction time to helping 14 teachers improve their English. These teachers work in the Centers.

Labor Six volunteers donated 217 hours to work on community infrastructure projects. Together, they repaired kitchen cabinets, installed new hand-railings for the children, and tiled the kitchen and a classroom.

IMPACT SPOTLIGHT Labor projects are an important element of Global Volunteers’ work. Financial, time, or human capital constraints can leave needed community projects undone or unfinished. These projects range from painting walls, to mending fences, to constructing improved sanitation facilities. As a part of Global Volunteers’ philosophy of service, volunteers work hand-in-hand with members of local communities to complete these projects by donating their skills, experience, or muscle-power. Global Volunteers’ labor projects in Ecuador focus on preparing spaces for children to learn. Cognitive development is hampered by classrooms, dormitories, kitchens, or lavatories in poor condition. In Ecuador, volunteers work with FUNDAC to make sure that the Childhood Development Centers are safe and welcoming for the many families and children that rely on them. This year, the first team of volunteers was asked to tile a classroom that was damaged by moisture. Mold grew, making the space unsafe, and the Center had not been able to use this classroom for many months. Working together with a local mason, volunteers Rod Supple and Wynn Jacobson-Galan purchased tile, stripped the walls of their top layers, and placed the brand-new tiles. By the end of the first week of the program, the team completed tiling the classroom and the teachers were anxious to bring in their teaching materials. Quickly, this brand-new, clean space was converted to a puppet theater for the afternoon and it was clear from the excited faces of the children how much the hard work was appreciated.
