Index for prices
Prices are generally high on European seafood markets, particularly for groundfish and octopus products. Tuna prices are declining, however, due primarily to good landings in the Western Pacific.
GROUNDFISH Prices for wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus) are expected to remain high as demand is still strong from China, Japan and Europe. For wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin, supply is tight. Cod has been particularly scarce in the Faroe Islands, and the fishing fleet is mainly targeting ling and brosme. Consumption on the Italian and Spanish markets is still limited.

TUNA - BILLFISHES The 3-month fish aggregating device (FAD) closure in the Western and Central Pacific has been in force since 1 July and catches have fallen to a moderate level. In Thailand, cold storage space remains tight and congestion continues at Bangkok port. Carrier landings from the Western and Central Pacific have been good overall, and the ample raw material supply has seen skipjack prices fall sharply once again. TUNA - Pacific Ocean
Catch rates in the Indian Ocean have been moderate, with some EU and Seychellesflagged vessels resuming fishing. However, reports suggest that these vessels will be tied up for about 2 weeks each time they return to port in order to conserve their yellowfin quota. Meanwhile, raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy. Skipjack prices have dropped while yellowfin prices remain stable.

There is no change in the situation in the Eastern Pacific as catch levels remain moderate and carriers continue to arrive from both the Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific. Skipjack and yellowfin prices have dropped, while local canneries in Ecuador are reporting moderate raw material inventories. The first 2-month IATTC ‘veda’ will commence on 29 July.

Fishing in the Atlantic Ocean continues to be affected by poor weather conditions and catches remain at moderate-to-low levels. Raw material inventory levels at local canneries are also moderate-to-low. Despite the slow fishing, skipjack prices have fallen slightly in line with the prevailing global trend. Yellowfin price have been steady, as have European prices for whole frozen tuna. However, the market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins has fallen.

SMALL PELAGICS Global supplies of mackerel are expected to increase with declining prices. Supplies of Atlantic herring will most likely be reduced in 2019, but prices are expected to remain low. Both mackerel and herring are suffering from a lack of access to the market of the Russian Federation and the situation is not expected to change. Sardine and anchovy supplies are likely to be good, though a large part of the catch of these species will be directed to reduction purposes.

CEPHALOPODS Supply of octopus raw material is now extremely tight and prices are rising steeply. The current situation is expected to continue until September. The price level is having a particularly severe effect on the Spanish market.

CRUSTACEANS A total of 74 000 metric tonnes of shrimp were caught in Argentina in the first half of 2018, 15 percent less than in the same period of 2017. Bad weather and a fishermen’s strike is delaying the shrimp fishing at present, as a result prices of Argentine shrimp have been rising. There has been a higher proportion of small shrimp in the catch this year, and consequently the upward price trend is more pronounced for the larger sizes.

The raw material situation for vannamei shrimp is still unstable, with lower supply in July resulting from the farmers’ decision not to stock in June due to the long Ramadan holidays and the low shrimp prices. Currently, vannamei prices are some 10 percent higher than last month.

Crab and lobster landings in Europe are increasing as the fishing season kicks off. Combined with lower demand over the summer period, the supply hike is dragging down prices of European lobster. In Canada, lobster fishing has now ceased, after a generally stable season. Tails are still scarce, but most producers will likely have some inventory of whole lobster and cooked meat. According to the oyster mortality monitoring bulletin from the French scientific institution IFREMER dated 1 June, 2018, the average Monthly average consumer prices in metropolitan‌ cumulative mortality rate for seed oysters is 46.7 percent at the national level. This represents a significant increase compared with previous reports, and is correlated with an increase in water temperatures. Juvenile and adult oyster mortalities have also been reported at certain sites but at a much lower rate (0.5 to 3.5 percent and 0.5 to 3 percent respectively).

SALMON Wild swings in prices are not a new phenomenon for the Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon sector, but the volatility experienced so far in 2018 has been particularly severe. The Fish Pool Index began 2018 at around NOK 56 per kg following a sharp spike in harvest volumes in the second half of 2017, but subsequently tighter supply due to exceptionally cold seawater temperatures, and the positive demand effect of falling prices at retail level, sustained a steep upward trend in the first quarter. In Q2, holidays in Norway compounded the fish shortage and pushed export prices even higher, with the Fish Pool index reaching a record NOK 80.22 per kg in week 19. By week 27, however, prices had fallen back to NOK 56.54 as harvesting conditions normalized, significantly lower than the NOK 65.46 per kg reported in the same week in 2017. Overall, the most recent Norwegian trade statistics show a 3.1 percent decline in the average NOK price of fresh whole Atlantics in the first 6 months of the year compared with the first 6 months of 2017.

However, a 10 percent rise in total salmon export volume translated into a 3.4 percent increase in salmon export revenue (NOK) over the same period. In the UK, after a long period of strong growth and rapid gains in export revenues, 2018 has been marked by poor biological performance at Scottish farms. Although this is expected to translate into a drop in Scottish production of some 10 percent or more, UK exporters must still compete with other producers on price, and total Atlantic salmon production is forecast to rise by some 5 percent this year. The result is a GBP 0.40-0.50 per kg year-on-year drop in UK export prices for fresh whole Atlantics in week 29. Despite the record heights breached in May, consensus forward prices at Fish Pool for Q3 reflect market expectations for a significantly lower average price of NOK 55.70 per kg for fresh whole during Q3 and NOK 61.25 for Q4. These price levels are still profitable, however, and demand for farming licenses in Norway remains strong. The most recent farming license auction, held by the Norwegian government in June, saw 11 879 tonnes of capacity sold for a record NOK 2.3 billion to 13 different companies. In the UK, however, the outlook is not as positive as it has been in recent years. The Scottish industry is facing a combination of challenges, including lower prices, lower output, increasing costs related to disease management and the need to address damaging portrayals of salmon farming in the media.

TROUT . After a year of extremely tight supply in 2017, farmed Norwegian trout has been considerably more plentiful in 2018. With standing biomass in Norway 8 percent higher year-on-year by the end of May, these market conditions can be expected to continue. Export prices have dropped somewhat as a result of increased supply, down to NOK 62.19 per kg for fresh whole as of week 26, compared with NOK 77.33 per kg in the same week in 2017. However, good demand from diverse markets such as Belarus, Japan and the US has seen trout export revenue rise by 5.2 percent in NOK terms in the first 6 months of the year.

The decline of pangasius is ongoing in the EU28 market, with the value of Viet Nam’s 1262 EU28-destined exports falling by over half in the last 5 years. The effects of weak consumer 912 demand, damaging media coverage and strong competition from whitefish alternatives have now been compounded by the high price Carp - whole - live Carp - Slices, fresh on ice Carp - Fillets, fresh on ice level. However, there is one notable exception to the prevailing trend – the United Kingdom. According to VASEP, the United Kingtom was the only EU28 market to register an increase in pangasius imports in 2017, reaching USD 46 million after a 2.5 percent increase.

SEABASS SEABREAM Prices for bass and bream on European markets have been sluggish during the last few weeks, at a time that is traditionally the peak of the annual price cycle. In July, Greek-origin 300-450 g bass and bream were selling on the Italian market at EUR 4.70 and EUR 4.40 per kg respectively. These figures represent declines of EUR 0.80 for bass and EUR SEABASS/SEABREAM - in Italy origin: Greece 0.30 for bream compared with the same EUR/kg month in 2017. 6.5 6.0 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 3.5 3.0
The root cause of this decline is production 4.70 volume growth in major producing countries Greece and Turkey that is 4.40 overwhelming otherwise solid demand in key EU markets. In the first 5 months of the year, Turkey and Greece respectively exported 27 percent and 2.8 percent more Seabass fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc Seabream fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc bass in volume terms than the same period last year. An anticipated increase in bass harvests in Turkey towards the end of the summer means prices are unlikely to climb much higher this year. For bream, the equivalent figures were -5.1 percent for Turkey and 4.4 percent for Greece, reflecting relatively tighter bream supply early in the year. The decline in Turkish bream exports may be explained by industry reports of biomass losses resulting from disease problems in bream fry and juveniles due to the climatic conditions and high seawater temperatures during initial stocking of cages starting in February 2018.
