Index for prices
The Brussels Seafood Expo, the major networking event for the global seafood industry, took place at the end of April. The overall expectation expressed by the Expo participants was for continued strengthening of demand for seafood, particularly during the summer months. Higher prices are anticipated, due to limited wild catches as well as rising fuel prices, which translate into higher costs for fishing operations and product shipments.
GROUNDFISH In Poland, cod landings are reportedly good at the moment, with prices steady, although current levels are far lower than those observed during the winter months.

The European Fish Price Report, based on information supplied by industry correspondents, aims to provide guidance on broad price trends. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions.
Prices for wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus) are stable. Demand remains strong. Prices are expected to continue to increase during summer and autumn. Supply is scarce for wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material. Cod is proving difficult to find in the Faroe Islands while in Iceland production is low as the focus has shifted to fresh fish due to good prices and relative simplicity of production compared with salted cod. The market for ling (Molva molva) is quite stable at present, with good catches balanced by high consumption. Haddock catches are currently good, which is typical for this time of year. Prices have declined somewhat since the start of May. Turbot prices have risen on the Spanish market, especially for smaller sizes. Sales are stable at present but are likely to increase as summer, the main consumption period, approaches.

TUNA - BILLFISHES Prices of both skipjack and yellowfin are increasing in all oceans. This trend is in line with fuel price increases, which mean higher running costs for the tuna fleet. Demand for canned tuna in the traditional markets, including Europe, is on the rise after disappointing sales last year. Catches in the Western and Central Pacific have improved to moderate-to-good. There is no change in the situation in Thailand, where raw material inventories at canneries remain healthy and carrier landings from both the Western and Central Pacific and the Indian Ocean remain good. Despite the ample raw material supply, skipjack prices continue to rise as canneries begin to stock up ahead of the FAD closure beginning in July.

Fishing in the Eastern Pacific has improved slightly, with catches moderate-to-low, as carriers continue to arrive from the Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific. However, these
2
volumes are still insufficient and local canneries are struggling for raw material. Skipjack prices remain stable while yellowfin prices have increased. Catches in the Atlantic Ocean have dropped to a moderate-to-low level and raw material inventories at local canneries are in a similar state. As a result, skipjack prices have risen while yellowfin prices have remained stable. In Europe, due to the slowdown in fishing in both the Indian and Atlantic Ocean, prices for both skipjack and yellowfin have risen by 8 percent. The market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins, however, has fallen as loin prices typically lag raw material prices by about 3 months.

SMALL PELAGICS May is the main fishing month for sprat in the Baltic Sea. Catches by the Polish fleet are good, and prices have fallen sharply. Herring catches have also been good, but prices have remained stable.
CEPHALOPODS In the cuttlefish market, good European demand combined with strong Chinese demand for larger sizes is currently pushing prices upwards. Meanwhile, catches in the Southwest Atlantic Illex squid fisheries have reportedly been disappointing, with landings only half of what was caught last year. The squid fisheries in this part of the world tend to set prices for squid worldwide, and these can be expected to rise strongly in coming months as a result.

CRUSTACEANS SHRIMP Supply of Argentine shrimp is beginning to dry up on the European market, especially for the larger sizes which made up the major proportion of last year’s landings. The fleet is currently awaiting the reopening of the inshore fisheries in national waters. Catches will primarily be directed to the European market. Demand from China is very weak at the moment, in stark contrast with last year. In anticipation of the new fishing season and in light of low Asian demand, prices are stable or declining for smaller sizes, despite low inventories.

OTHER CRUSTACEANS Although crab and lobster landings in Europe are seasonally slow at this time of year, they have been exceptionally low this year in particular. Crab fishing is reported to be delayed, possibly due to the extremely cold conditions in Northern Europe observed at the end of the winter, which affected shellfish and crustacean growth. In view of new lobster and crab arrivals from other parts of the world and in expectation of the restart of the European fisheries, prices have started to come down from the skyhigh levels reached last month.

CRAB - in France, origin: Europe The lobster season in Canada began on 1 EUR/kg May. The first week of catches was 5.0 reportedly good, but prices are not yet 4.0 established. Market indications show that 3.0 the raw material prices will probably be a bit lower than spring last year, which 2.0 4.34 should translate into lower prices for 1.0 whole lobster. The market for cooked meat in USA is down, so cooked lobster meat prices will be a lot lower than last 400-600 - 600-800 kg/pc year. For lobster tails, however, inventories are low and demand is high, which should result in very high tail prices. The recent CETA agreement between Canada and Europe is expected to boost lobster sales from Canada in Europe at the expense of US lobster. Average demand for rock lobster from European and Southeast Asian markets is reported at present, with slightly higher European prices.
4
BIVALVES Dutch, Irish and Spanish mussels are widely available on the French market at present. Market demand is stable in anticipation of the reopening of the French mussel season in June. The 2018 IFREMER oyster mortality monitoring program has commenced with no significant level of mortalities being reported in the April bulletin. Oyster consumption is typically low during the warmer period of the year before picking up again towards the end of the year.

SALMON After a relatively subdued start to the year, prices for Norwegian farmed Atlantics have climbed strongly since the end of February. As of week 18, the Fish Pool Index price for fresh whole Atlantics hit NOK 75.09 per kg, approaching the exceptionally high peaks observed at the end of 2017. This steep uptrend is the result of lower-than-expected water temperatures in the farming regions, which inhibited fish growth, and global demand that has been revitalized by the temporary respite in raw material prices and improving economic fundamentals. The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) reported cumulative total exports for the first four months of the year of 320 000 tonnes worth NOK 21 billion. For April alone, the average export price for fresh whole Atlantics was NOK 68.52 per kg, 8 percent above the same month last year. Export volume was 74 000 tonnes, an increase of some 4 percent year-on-year. Although the volume of Norwegian salmon directed to Asian markets has grown considerably in recent years, it is the core EU markets such as Poland, France and the United Kingdom that have absorbed the majority of additional supply so far this year. In the UK, the Scottish industry is seeing similar price rises to those reported by its Norwegian counterparts, with fish trading as high as GBP 8 per kg. The continuing upward movement of prices, despite an overall increase in supply, is Salmon - origin: Norway spreading some concern amongst processors NOK/kg 76.27 and other intermediaries. Fish Pool forward 100.0 prices for the remainder of May as of now are at 90.0 80.0 70.0 NOK 78.40 per kg and have risen to NOK 74.50 60.0 50.0 75.69 per kg for June. The tight supply situation 40.0 30.0 means any negative supply shock is likely to 20.0 10.0 0.0 drive prices up sharply to extreme heights, negatively impacting margins for those downstream in the supply chain if they are unable to quickly pass these price hikes onto 3-4 6-7 their customers. However, without such a shock, the forecasted 4-5 percent growth in global farmed Atlantic supply this year, helped by higher harvests in both Norway and Chile, should be sufficient to bring prices back down in the
5
second half of the year. This expectation is reflected in Fish Pool forward prices of NOK 60 per kg or so for the second two quarters of 2018.
TROUT Supply of farmed Norwegian trout has increased somewhat in 2018 but remains low in historical terms. Higher harvest volumes have pushed prices down, however, with the NSC reporting an average price of NOK 64.73 per kg in April compared with around NOK 75 per kg in the same month last year. The cumulative totals for Norway in the first four months of the year were 13 600 tonnes worth NOK 883 million, with Belarus, the US and Japan the top three destinations. Biomasses were up 11 percent year-on-year as of March and prices will likely remain below last year’s levels.
FRESHWATER FISH Pangasius continues to lose ground in the EU market. In the first three months of 2018, imports declined by 20 percent. This decline is largely the result of bad publicity for the species in the European media. Despite the EU situation, prices are being driven up by demand from alternative markets, especially in Asia. Demand for carp in Hungary is gradually strengthening while supplies are scarce. Helped by improved prices, production is expected to recover by the end of month.

SEABASS - SEABREAM - MEAGRE Increased supply out of the two major suppliers, Greece and Turkey, is exerting downward pressure on European bass and bream prices despite a relatively positive demand outlook. Greek aquaculture companies have been reporting losses in 2017 due to weaker prices, and this situation has largely continued so far in 2018. In May, average reported prices for 300450 g Greek bass and bream on the Italian market were EUR 4.40 and EUR 4.20 per kg respectively, some 30-40 cents below the same month last year. Turkish companies, in contrast, are less vulnerable to price declines on European markets due to further weakening of the Turkish lira versus the euro. Economic concerns in Turkey are driving this sustained downtrend, which has seen the lira weaken by 40 percent versus the euro in the last 2 years alone. Combined with a more diverse set of export markets, this has given the Turkish sector somewhat of a competitive advantage over their Greek counterparts, who recently took further steps to protect their price premium through joint marketing efforts at the Brussels Seafood Expo. These coordinated campaigns are taking place under the umbrella organization for the Greek industry, the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization (HAPO).
