Index for prices
As is typically the case for this time of year, European and Asian markets are characterised at present by low activity and relatively weak demand. Tuna prices are rising again after a lull that has lasted several months but, in general, seafood prices are ranging from average to low. In the coming months, however, demand can be expected to pick up again as traders start preparing for the Christmas sales period.
GROUNDFISH Cod catches in Poland were very low in September, leading to substantial price increases on the back of moderate demand. Consumption of wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus) is starting to rise, driven in large part by changing weather conditions – wet-salted cod is an ingredient primarily used for warm dishes. The European Fish Price Report, based on information supplied by industry correspondents, aims to provide guidance on broad price trends. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions.
Meanwhile, there is low availability, on the producer's side, of wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin, However, this situation can be expected to change with the beginning of the new fishing season during the month of September.

Sales of turbot have fallen, which is normal for the post-summer period. Average price remain stable, but prices of large turbot have declined by 2 percent while prices of small turbot – of interest to the restaurant trade – have now overtaken those of medium-sized turbot.
TUNA - BILLFISHES TUNA - Spanish canneries
Catches in the Western and Central Pacific remain moderate-to-poor due to the continued FAD closure. Carrier landings in Thailand have fallen by more than half compared with previous months. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy for the time being but the situation may change if the poor fishing persists.

Catch rates in the Indian Ocean remain moderate, but fishing effort has been reduced Yellowfin > 10 kg, Spain CFR Skipjack main sizes, Spain CFR due to the yellowfin quota. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy. In line with the trend in Bangkok, skipjack and yellowfin prices have risen. The IATTC ‘veda’ remains in force until 8 October in the Eastern Pacific. Catch rates remain moderate and carriers continue to arrive from both the Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific. However, due to reduced TUNA - Pacific Ocean landings as a result of the ‘veda’, raw material inventories at local canneries have fallen USD/kg 3.0 further to a low level. 2.5
Catches and raw material inventories at local canneries in the Atlantic Ocean remain moderate. Skipjack and yellowfin prices have risen, reflecting worldwide trends.

SMALL PELAGICS High demand for horse mackerel is reported from African markets, which is translating into higher prices in Europe.
CEPHALOPODS The supply of octopus raw material has slowly begun to improve, and is expected to continue to increase during the octopus season from October to March. However, prices are still rising because market demand is increasing very rapidly and outpacing the rate of supply growth. Demand for cuttlefish has begun to pick up on European markets but, due to high Moroccan landings, prices are very low. In Southeast Asia, market demand is average with average to low prices.

CRUSTACEANS The shrimp raw material situation has begun to stabilize, with supply increasing compared with last month. However, because many farmers did not stock seeds in June, small shrimp are less readily available in comparison with larger sizes. The wild shrimp fisheries in Argentina have been productive, and a new fishing zone has been opened. Asian demand is growing, and buying for the 2019 Chinese New Year has already started. Meanwhile, in Europe, Argentine shrimp supply is low, especially for the larger sizes (10/20 and 20/30). Combined, these two factors have led to price increases. For the larger sizes, prices rose by an impressive 5 percent from August to September. In early September, a tax was put on Argentine exports, further exacerbating the situation.

The market has reacted with significant anxiety and insecurity and it is now difficult to close deals, on both the sales side and the purchase side. More price increases can be expected. In the market for crab, prices are expected to remain firm due to poor fishing at the beginning of the season coupled with strong international demand. Meanwhile, lobster landings are decreasing as we enter the autumn season.
BIVALVES French mussels, both rope and Bouchot, are widely available on the French market. Dutch bottom mussels are only now filtering into the market after the new season commenced in early August, a good month later than usual due to slow spring growth. Dutch mussels are smaller this year as a result but meat content is reported to be good and prices are expected to be strong.

According to the oyster mortality monitoring Monthly average consumer prices in metropolitan‌ bulletin from the French scientific institution IFREMER dated 06/07/2018, the average cumulative mortality rate is 64.7 percent at the national level for seed oysters, a significant increase compared with previous reports. This jump is likely correlated with an increase in water temperatures. The same report puts juvenile and adult oyster mortalities at around 4%. Prices are expected to be firm this year.
SALMON After around two months of relatively stability, prices for farmed Atlantic salmon rose sharply in late August and this trend continued into early September. Driven by uncertainty over supply, the volatility saw the Fish Pool Index, which measures average export prices for Norwegian fresh whole Atlantics, reach NOK 62.6 per kg in week 36, compared with 53.03 per kg in the same week in 2017. Despite an expected 5-6 percent increase in global production this year backed by improved biological performance and new licenses in Norway, strong broad-based demand for salmon is keeping prices and revenues high. According to the most recent report from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), Norway exported 100 000 tonnes of salmon worth NOK 6.3 billion in August, representing respective increases of 12 percent and 9 percent compared with August 2017. In the first 8 months of 2018, Norway exported 672 000 tonnes worth NOK 43.8 billion. Core EU markets remain the major force behind Norwegian salmon export growth and are actually increasing their share of Norwegian supply. In particular, Polish importers have been spending relatively more on Norwegian salmon so far in 2018 compared with the same period last year, reflecting improved demand in both the domestic market and in Germany, the major destination for Poland’s reexported smoked salmon. In the UK, the last quarter of the year is likely to be an improvement
4
over the first three in terms of export volumes, but overall the Scottish industry has had a difficult 2018, with total harvests expected to drop by up to 10 percent. Despite the recent upturn in prices, the Salmon - origin: Norway remainder of the year is likely to play out in line with the typical seasonal pattern. Upward NOK/kg movement in prices will be limited until the 100.0 90.0 market has absorbed post-summer harvests 80.0 70.0 and Christmas demand kicks in. Until then, a 60.0 50.0 lot of traders will be focused on accumulating 40.0 30.0 stocks and freezing fish in anticipation of the 20.0 10.0 0.0 end-of-year market. Average forward prices at Fish Pool for Q4 2018 are holding steady at NOK 64.75 per kg, peaking at NOK 67.65 per 3-4 6-7 kg in December. The continued weakness of the krone and British pound versus the euro will help to maintain firm demand in the key EU markets.

TROUT Increased farmed trout supply in Norway is exerting downward pressure on prices. Biomasses at Norwegian farms were 9 percent higher in July this year compared with the same month in 2017, and this is translating into increased harvests and export volumes. While demand from Belarus, the US and the EU remains strong, exports to Japan have fallen sharply in 2018 and prices as of mid-August for fresh whole trout out of Norway had fallen to the low NOK 50s per kg.
SEABASS SEABREAM During the peak summer period, bass and bream prices failed to reach their usual heights on European markets. Prices for 300-450 g bass for Greek bass in Italy are now down more than 15% percent in September 2018 compared with the same month in 2017, while for bream the decrease is around 5%. The main cause of the depressed price level is a large hike in exports from Turkey that is overwhelming aggregate demand despite continuing growth in alternative markets and firm demand in the EU.

Economic developments in Turkey itself are also taking on more importance for the bass and bream market as a whole. Inflation and a weakening currency have made export markets relatively more attractive for Turkish producers, boosting the supply of cheaper fish to the key EU markets. Industry stakeholders are also concerned with the potential damage that may be done to both the domestic market and the financial stability of certain Turkish bass and bream aquaculture companies if the situation deteriorates further.
