Issue 3/2019 March 2019 Index for prices
Latest trends Demand has started to pick up after a sluggish start to the year. Traders are only now starting to build up stocks for Lent, one of the main consumption periods, which is starting later than usual this year. Prices for several products have reached record levels, and further price hikes are likely to materialize in April. The overall outlook for capture fisheries is bleak, with groundfish and cephalopod resources under stress at a global level, and significant quotas cuts have been decided for this year. High prices are reported for bivalves, crab and lobster and even though aquaculture production is still growing, prices are rising for many farmed seafood products. Prices for tuna, a true global commodity, are also heading upwards due to the various fishing bans currently in place all over the world.
GROUNDFISH In Poland, cod catches are limited with moderate demand and prices have fallen. quotas have been reduced for 2019, which will lead to Groundfish price increases. In Poland, demand is currently limited but catches have been COD poor -recently and prices have started in Poland (FOB, origin: Baltic Sea) to move up. USD/kg 2.4 2.2 1.9 1.7 1.4 1.2 0.9

The European Fish Price Report, based on information supplied by industry correspondents, aims to provide guidance on broad price trends. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions.
The groundfish industry is planning to lift sales prices, in order to pass rising raw material costs down the supply chain. The higher ex-vessel prices are caused by low landings and expectations for even lower supply in the coming months. Autumn finished with lower than expected catches of Merluccius productus in the United States of America, and the lack of fish pushed prices up for new contracts. The Alaska pollock A season has already started and prices are higher than last season. Demand is very high for both Alaska pollock and hake products. Prices for wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus), prices are falling as catches in the Pacific Ocean are finally improving and plenty of cod from that area is available on the market. Meanwhile, demand is strengthening for wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin. The majority of this demand is coming from Spain in anticipation of the important Easter consumption period.

TUNA - BILLFISHES Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific has improved to moderate-to-good. The situation at Bangkok Port is better compared with the last two months but it remains congested. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy. Despite the good raw material supply situation, however, skipjack prices have increased.

TUNA - Indian/Atlantic Oceans EUR/kg 3.0
Fishing in the Eastern Pacific remains very poor and local canneries are still extremely short on raw material. While some carriers continue to arrive from the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific, the incoming quantity is still insufficient to remedy the raw material situation. As a result, both skipjack and yellowfin prices have increased strongly.

SMALL PELAGICS In Poland, herring catches have been strong and demand has been moderate, leading to lower prices. For the first time in recent history, sprat prices are higher than herring prices on the Polish market, although ex-vessel prices for both species are very low at EUR 0.16 for herring and EUR 0.17 per kg for sprat.
CEPHALOPODS Prices of octopus fell sharply in the first quarter of the year, continuing a reversal that began at the end of 2018 as mounting consumer resistance began to take effect, following months of strongly increasing prices. Demand in Europe is moderate at present and prices have fallen as low as EUR 3.00 per kg for some sizes. Supply of octopus raw material from Indonesia is tightening even though some suppliers still have some inventories. Prices are generally on a par with last month, but producers in Indonesia are expecting increases over the coming months. In South Africa, sellers are squeezing what they can from the market, as catches are low and stocks are limited. There has been a marginal firming of prices on low volumes. The South African rand has weakened relative to the euro, which is helping exporters. For bigger sizes, the EUR price reached record levels this month, but prices are more stable for smaller sizes due to plenty of competition from other sources.

CRUSTACEANS Raw material prices for shrimp have begun to increase. Even though supply is still relatively stable overall, volumes are limited from some regions in Indonesia such as Aceh, Medan, Lampung and Sumbawa and white spot disease is becoming an issue in some areas. Sales of Argentine shrimp in Europe are slow as buyers are holdings stocks. Although these stocks are not excessive and arrivals from land-based plants are relatively low, the business climate is characterised by sluggish demand and prices have risen by EUR 0.10 per kg for all sizes. Land production of frozen shrimp is coming to an end in Argentina, but there have been some arrivals from vessels fishing in the north outside the fishing ban which is applied below the 41st parallel.

Crab and lobster landings are traditionally much lower at this time of year. Prices for European lobster are holding steady at the record level of EUR 38 per kg reached in February 2019. There is no Canadian lobster on the market at present, as the season doesn’t begin until 1 May. Prices will likely be pushed up by strong demand from China. Demand for tropical lobster is high in Europe currently, but prices are not going up.

BIVALVES The official Baie du Mont Saint Michel bouchot season closed on 11 February 2019 having been opened since 13 July 2018. The season is decided each year by the French Institution INAO. Prices of bouchot mussels remain high at EUR 6.00 per kg. Irish and Spanish rope as well as Dutch bottom mussels are replacing the French product during the month-long closure of the bouchot fisheries.

End of year shellfish sales are reported to have been relatively good in spite of the yellow vest movement in France which blocked transport of goods before the Christmas period.
SALMON Prices for farmed Atlantic salmon have spiked in recent weeks, with the Fish Pool Index reaching NOK 73.85 per kg for fresh whole fish by week 10, 2019. This marks a 12.5 percent gain over the previous week and 4 percent increase compared with the same week in 2018. An upward price trend around this time of the year is fairly typical on European markets as pre-Easter buying picks up, but the reports from Norway suggest the speed and magnitude of the recent hike has come as something of a surprise given that biomass growth over the winter months was considerably faster than in 2019. This suggests a temporary lull in harvests at farm level but also points to strong underlying demand which is driving continued export revenue growth. According to the most recent report from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), exports of salmon out of Norway in February totalled 80 000 tonnes worth NOK 5.1 billion, increases of 7 percent and 11 percent respectively compared with February 2018. The equivalent figure for year-to-date exports for the first two months of the year was 166 000 tonnes (+4 percent) worth NOK 10.7 billion (+11 percent). Around 70 percent of this value is accounted for by exports to the EU, led by Poland and France.

In the UK, the possibility of a no-deal Brexit is the number one issue concerning the Scottish salmon sector at present, and the recent parliamentary vote establishing UK MPs’ opposition to such an outcome does not necessarily prevent it from occurring at some point in the future. In the worst-case scenario, UK smoked salmon exporters could be faced with a 13 percent tariff in what is a very competitive EU market. In the more immediate future, UK buyers must
5
contend with the steep increase in Norwegian and Scottish prices, with the latter reaching GBP 7.10 per kg for mid-sized fish in week 10. Harvesting activity at Norwegian salmon farms is expected to increase over the coming weeks and prices should moderate slightly, although average forward prices at FishPool for the full month of March are still relatively high at NOK 70 per kg. For the second quarter of the year, forward prices are slightly lower in the mid NOK 60s range. Total Norwegian output is projected to rise by some 6 percent this year but there are concerns as to the effect of a warmer start to the year on fish health, with high sea levels being reported in the south of the country. In the UK, although the question of whether the UK will leave the EU on 29 March will be answered shortly, the uncertainty affecting the farmed salmon industry is likely to continue for some time.
TROUT Export prices for farmed Norwegian trout were some 8 percent above last year’s levels as of week 9, at NOK 66.31 per kg for fresh fish. According to NSC figures, Norway’s exports of trout in February were 22 percent higher in volume terms than the same month in 2018, at 3 600 tonnes. Export value was up 37 percent to NOK 251 million. Year-to-date figures for the first 2 months of the year were 7 600 tonnes (+23 percent) worth NOK 514 million (+32 percent). Demand remains strong across a diverse array of markets, led by United States, Belarus and Thailand.
SEABASS SEABREAM Prices for bass and bream on European markets remain extremely low, particularly for bass, even taking seasonal variation into account. For Greek-origin fish selling in Italy, prices for smaller bream rose compared with last month, but there has been little upward movement for other products. In year-on-year terms, 300-450 g bream prices are some 5.5 percent lower this year compared with the same month last year, while prices for similar sized bass are 12 percent down. These price levels are the result of overly rapid production growth in Turkey and, to a lesser extent, in Greece. A further increase in the total harvest is expected in 2019, and a recovery in prices will be difficult, although relatively higher prices can be expected in early summer as usual. In other news, EU regulators have approved the joint acquisition of Greek aquaculture firms Selonda and Nireus by a private equity fund. However, this is conditional on the sale of certain assets including fish farms and hatcheries.
