GLOBEFISH - European Price Report - Aug 2019

Issue 8/2019 August 2019 Index for prices

Latest trends The seafood market in Europe is characterized by slow activity and low demand at present. Weak demand for fishery products in China is overshadowing the European market, and prices are generally trending downward. There are some exceptions to this trend, however, and prices for tuna and squid have been rising.

GROUNDFISH Polish cod catches are limited at present and supply is tight. Even though domestic demand in Poland is reportedly low at present, cod prices have nevertheless increased sharply, surpassing USD 2 per kg for the first time since September 2018. COD - in Poland (FOB, origin: Baltic Sea)

Consumption of wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus) is still stagnant as raw material supply is limited, and prices have remained high. For wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin, prices are still increasing. The period of highest consumption, which runs from September to December, is now approaching and demand is strengthening. Catches of Alaska pollock in Russia are up TURBOT - in Spain, origin: Spain 8 percent over last year. Catches for the EUR/kg first seven months of this year totalled 1.33 million tonnes, with a product 29.0 27.0 breakdown of 556 000 tonnes of headed 25.0 23.0 21.0 and gutted (H&G), 90 000 tonnes of 19.0 17.0 whole round and 51 000 tonnes of fillet 15.0 13.0 11.0 blocks. Prices for H&G Fresh - whole, cultured 0.5-1kg/pc pollock from Russia have cooled 1-2 kg/pc 2-3 kg/pc somewhat after having hit the highest July level for at least 10 years. Meanwhile, on the Vladivostok market, supply is steady and demand is good.

In Spain, sales and prices of cultured turbot remain stable.

TUNA - BILLFISHES Tuna prices bottomed out in July before rising sharply during August 2019, due to low supply from the main fishing areas. TUNA - Pacific Ocean

The Western and Central Pacific FAD closure is now in its second month and fishing is reported to be poor. As a result, there has been a reduction in the number of carriers arriving in Bangkok and the port congestion situation has eased. Raw material inventories at Thai canneries remain close to full capacity after receiving most of the carrier backlog. Skipjack prices rebounded during August and are widely expected to increase further due to the poor fishing.

Most vessels have resumed fishing in the Indian Ocean and catch rates are reported to be moderate. There has been a recent carrier delivery from the Western and Central Pacific and raw material inventories at local canneries remain moderate. In line with the world trend, skipjack prices have increased while yellowfin prices remain stable. 2

The first 2-month IATTC ‘veda’ has been in force in the Eastern Pacific since 29 July. About 60 percent of the total fleet opted to tie up during this closure period. Although fishing is reported to be poor due to water temperatures, there has been an increase in landings due to the vessels coming in for the veda. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain at healthy levels. Skipjack prices are rising quickly and this trend is expected to continue during September, while yellowfin prices remain steady. Catch rates in the Atlantic Ocean remains moderate while raw material inventories at local canneries have improved and are now at moderate levels. Abidjan skipjack prices have fallen slightly while yellowfin prices remain steady.

Following the recent uptrend in other markets, the European price for skipjack has increased. Yellowfin prices have increased also, relatively more sharply, due to the low supply from the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. The market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins remains stable.

SMALL PELAGICS In Poland, herring catches are limited at present due to the hot summer weather and the holiday period, and this has been driving prices upwards. Sprat is more popular in the winter months and demand for this species in Poland is weak at present, leading to a decline in prices despite limited catches. In Russia, reports point to relatively weak demand for herring, with most interest coming from processing companies working with retail chains.

CEPHALOPODS Squid catches in the South West Atlantic are again setting the pace for the world squid market. While Argentine Illex catches were reportedly similar to last year, at about 100 000 tonnes, the fact that Chinese squid jiggers left the area earlier this year is an indicator of deteriorating results. Squid prices are consequently very high at present. In South Africa, the winter weather has further inhibited already slow fishing and there is little on offer on the supply side. Large sized squid are fetching record high prices, while prices for small and medium sized squid are stagnant.

3

Demand for octopus from China and Europe has been weakening since last month, while the octopus season in Indonesia started a few weeks ago. Prices of octopus have been falling as a result.

CRUSTACEANS In Argentina, shrimp catches continue to be good. Stocks are high in Europe, especially for the larger sizes. These inventories, together with the low demand in China, have translated into substantial pressure on prices, especially for the 10/20 size. The uncertainty of possible further price reductions has seen most buyers adopt a wait-and-see policy. Consumer demand for shrimp is good in Europe at present, but it is not sufficient to absorb the inventories that have built up during the first half of the year.

Indonesian shrimp farmers are facing CRAB - in France, origin: Europe some problems, one of them being tight EUR/kg shrimp fry supply that is causing some 5.0 stocking delays. In addition, there have 4.0 been some disease problems and cold weather in certain areas, including East 3.0 Java, Lampung, and Bali. As a result of 2.0 these combined factors, raw material 1.0 supplies have been limited and prices are very high. The situation has improved 400-600 - 600-800 kg/pc since a few weeks ago, however, and it appears raw material quantities are set to rise and prices are likely to fall back somewhat.

BIVALVES Bouchot mussels are more widely available on the French market as we advance in the season. The Baie de St Brieuc season opened in mid-June, while the season for the Appellation d'Origine ContrĂ´lĂŠe (AOC) bouchot mussel from Baie Mont St Michel, with an annual production of 10 000 tonnes, has also been underway since July. Dutch bottom mussels are scarcer on the French market, and the bulk of production from the new season beginning in July has so far been distributed to Benelux markets. The oyster season traditionally declines in summer and the product is less available at retail level. The French scientific institution IFREMER is again tracking summer oyster mortalities. On their 08/07/19 bulletin they report an average cumulative mortality rate of 41 percent at the national level for seed oysters with high regional fluctuation. Mortalities in seed oysters occurred later this year compared with the previous 2 years. For reference, seed mortalities averaged 60 percent in the early July bulletin in 2018 compared with 41 percent this year. Juvenile and adult oysters are reported as having much lower mortality rates (less than 2 percent for the majority of test sites).

SALMON Prices for farmed Atlantic salmon have fallen on European markets in August, closely tracking 2018 price trends. The Fish Pool Index, representing aggregate prices for fresh whole Atlantics from Norway, fell to NOK 50.46 per kg in week 33, approximately on a par with the same week in 2018. The cause of the decline is two-fold. The first driver is the seasonal spike in harvest volumes, which tend to pick up towards the end of the summer as a relatively larger proportion of the biomass reaches harvestable weight after summer growth. Salmon - origin: Norway NOK/kg 100.0 90.0 80.0 70.0 60.0 50.0 40.0 30.0 20.0 10.0 0.0

The second factor behind the price fall is a weakening of demand in major European markets, thought to be connected to the extreme heatwaves that took place across the continent. Year-to-date performance has generally been positive from the producer perspective, however, with the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) reporting total salmon exports of 595 000 tonnes worth NOK 40.3 billion in the first 7 months of the year, increases of 4 percent and 7 percent respectively compared with the same period last year. Strong demand from Asia, particularly China, has helped to offset some of the reduction in European buying activity over the summer. The farmed salmon industry in the UK has also been seeing good results in 2019, with recent figures from Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) showing a 25 percent increase in the value and volume of UK salmon exports in the first half of this year. Prices for Scottish Atlantics were slightly higher yearon-year in week 33, at around GBP 5.80 per kg. The Scottish industry has expressed further concerns relating to the growing possibility of a no-deal Brexit, calling for guarantees that the intellectual property rights surrounding the origin-focused branding of Scottish salmon are upheld if the UK does indeed exit from the EU28 without a deal. Despite the recent drop in prices, the outlook for farmed salmon prices for the remainder of the year remains relatively good. The full effects of the algal bloom which caused heavy mortalities in northern Norway earlier this year are yet to be felt, as the majority of the losses were amongst the smaller generations which are set to be harvested later this year or during 2020. At the same time, worsening biological metrics in Chile suggest that global supply growth may be more limited than previously anticipated, offsetting sharp increases in production in Scotland and the Faroe Islands this year. Forward prices at Fish Pool reflect market expectations for an average price around NOK 50 per kg for fresh whole Norwegian Atlantics for the rest of August and also show the anticipated upward trend over the remainder of the year to a peak of NOK 58.85 per kg in December.

TROUT Export prices for fresh farmed trout from Norway were down some 7 percent year-on-year in week 32, to NOK 48.79 per kg. Supply is significantly more plentiful this year, with biomasses 25 percent higher in July compared with July 2018. According to the NSC, Norway exported 29 700 tonnes of trout worth NOK 2 billion in the first 7 months of the year, both figures representing increases of 23 percent compared with the same period last year.

6

SEABASS SEABREAM Prices for farmed bass on European markets are well down in August compared with the same month last year, with Greek 300-450 g bass selling at only EUR 3.60 per kg compared with EUR 4.40 in August 2018. Similar trends are being observed at wholesale markets in all large Mediterranean consumers of the species. Prices for larger fish are particularly weak and are dragging the aggregate down. The root cause of the lull is the continuing supply surplus coming out of both Greece and Turkey. For bream, volumes out of Greece are more limited and the situation is relatively more stable. Prices are on a par with their 2018 equivalents. Industry consolidation continues, with the dual acquisition of Greek aquaculture companies Nireus and Selonda, by a group led by the firm which acquired Andromeda in 2016, is drawing closer to its conclusion. The only remaining obstacle is the completion of the sale of 10 000 tonnes of bass and bream farming capacity, a pre-condition for the European Commission’s final approval of the deal.
