Issue 4/2019 April 2019 Index for prices
Latest trends The usual increase in seafood trade accompanied the arrival of Lent this year, leading to higher prices for all major products. Groundfish is in particularly low supply, and prices continue to rise. Two prominent political issues are likely to impact trade in the coming months. The first is the outcome of ongoing Brexit negotiations, for which the deadline has been extended until 31 October. If no agreement is reached between the EU28 and the UK, then the two thirds of UK’s seafood exports currently destined for the EU28 would be subject to high tariffs. The other issue is the announcement by the administration of US President Donald Trump on 8 April that it will consider imposing new tariffs on products imported from the EU28, with seafood products on the list of imports that may be subject to duties.

The European Fish Price Report, based on information supplied by industry correspondents, aims to provide guidance on broad price trends. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions.
Iceland’s share of the North Atlantic fishery is increasing at the expense of the Russian Federation and Norway, the fishery’s two largest producers. In 2019, Iceland’s cod landings are expected to increase by 13 percent to 285 000 tonnes. At the same time, Iceland’s haddock catches are expected to increase by 66 percent to 60 000 tonnes and the nation’s saithe landings are predicted to rise by 43 percent to 70 000 tonnes. Overall, however, groundfish supply to the European market is expected to be lower in 2019 than the already short supply of 2018.

There has also been good European demand for black grouper, although landings have been slow and prices have been average. In Sweden, haddock prices have fallen back from the skyhigh levels reached in March as weather conditions are now more suitable for fishing. In Vladivostok, Alaska pollock prices are stable, while in Moscow prices are declining as fish is plentiful. Sole - origin: Netherlands Dover sole is one of the highest priced seafood products on the European market. Gutted sole can easily reach EUR 20.00 per kg at import. In April, prices are generally lower as sole are carrying eggs, which changes its fat content and decreases its value. In April 2019, however, prices stayed quite high due to the late Easter this year.

Salted cod is a traditional product for Lenten seafood consumption, especially in Portugal, Spain and Italy. Consumption of wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus) has begun to increase in these major markets with the arrival of the Easter period, typically a time of strong demand for this product. For wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin, catches have been skewed towards larger fish. This is due to the fact that these bigger sizes are more favoured during the Easter season.
TUNA - BILLFISHES Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific remains moderate-to-good. Due to the upcoming Songkran holidays, Thai canneries will be closed for up to a week and Bangkok Port is expected to be congested. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy. Skipjack prices continue to increase, having risen by over 10 percent in just one month.
2
Catches in the Indian Ocean have improved to moderate. Raw material inventories at local canneries are healthy. Some catches continue to be transhipped and diverted to the South American and Asian markets. Skipjack prices continue to increase while yellowfin prices remain stable.

Fishing in the Eastern Pacific has improved to slow-to-moderate while local canneries continue to be short on raw material. Carriers Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel are still arriving from the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific and the raw material situation is expected to improve. Skipjack prices have risen again as raw material supplies remain slow for now, but yellowfin prices have decreased. Tuna processors in Ecuador are worried about losing market share in Latin America to China, which has been reporting increasing sales to the continent, at prices which undercut even Thai prices.
Fishing in the Atlantic Ocean is reported to be slow-to-moderate and local canneries remain low on raw material. As a result, there has been another sharp increase in the price of skipjack, while yellowfin prices have fallen slightly.

SMALL PELAGICS Norway’s exports of frozen whole mackerel in 2018 dropped by as much as 26.5 percent, to 238 200 tonnes. Export prices rose significantly, however, and the decline by value was only 9.7 percent, to NOK 3.5 billion. Norwegian herring exports also decreased somewhat in 2018 compared with 2017, both in volume (-7.5 percent to 131 200 tonnes) and in value (-8.5 percent to NOK 885 million). The main markets were in North Africa and Eastern Europe, with Egypt as the largest importer, accounting for 18.4 percent of total exports, followed by Ukraine (18 percent) and Lithuania (16.8 percent). In April 2019, Polish small pelagic catches (herring and sprat) were good, but due to firm demand and empty cold storages, prices increased. There has been good availability of Pacific herring reported on the Moscow market and prices have been moderate. On the Pacific coast, good landings have been reported with declining demand.
3
CEPHALOPODS Good Chinese demand is reported for cuttlefish on the back of competitive prices, although there is no demand in Europe. Octopus may continue to be in short supply this year, especially if the Moroccan quota is not adjusted. If there is no improvement in supplies, prices will continue to rise. Inventories are very low, so there will not be much relief from cold storage SQUID - in Italy, origin: South Africa either. The halting of octopus fishing in Indonesia this month has pushed up raw EUR/kg 8.0 material prices, although they will normalize 7.0 again when the season resumes around 6.0 7.7 November. 5.0 4.0 3.0
For squid, a somewhat more plentiful supply situation is expected, as the fishery in the Squid - Whole, FAS, size M Argentine EEZ appears to be more productive than in 2018. World demand for both octopus and squid is on the rise and consequently prices are also increasing. In fact, EPR prices for squid from South Africa, shown in the graph above, have reached the highest level since the series began back in 2012.
CRUSTACEANS In early March, as is typical at this time of year, a number of shrimp boats began fishing the open waters north of the 41st parallel. Good catches soon prompted other vessels to do the same and ultimately the whole freezer fleet and some fresh shrimp boats joined in, pushing up landing volumes. These shrimp ARGENTINA RED SHRIMP - origin: Argentina normally carry eggs, which together with low Chinese demand has led to EUR/kg 8.20 falling prices at origin. Much of the 10.5 7.00 production has been diverted to Europe, 9.0 6.90 7.5 and it has been pushing prices down 6.80 6.0 there also, despite the increase in 4.5 demand observed during the Easter 3.0 period. Prices of the larger sized Argentine red shrimp decreased by EUR 0.10 per kg, while prices of the smaller > 10-20 pc/kg > 20-30 > 30-40 > 40-60 sizes have been stable.
Raw material supply of shrimp from Indonesia is quite stable compared with last month, though there is low supply in some areas. During April, some farmers are preparing and controlling the supply of shrimp raw material in anticipation of Ramadan festivities.

Strong demand is reported for rock lobster from Yemen with high prices reported. European crab and lobster landings are traditionally much lower at this time of year, and current high prices compared with last year reflect the tight supply situation coupled with high demand. Canadian lobster will only become available starting May 2019.
BIVALVES At this time of year, mussels on the French market are sourced mainly from Ireland and the Netherlands. The main mussel importing countries are Italy, France and the Netherlands, and all have been reporting lower trade. Mussels continue to be one of the cheapest seafood options on the market, with a value of around USD 2.00 per kg (live weight), but sustained demand has driven substantial growth in prices during the course of 2018 and over the opening months of 2019.
SALMON After starting the year at very high levels, prices for Norwegian farmed Atlantics have fallen back somewhat going into the 2nd quarter. Harvesting at Norwegian farms has picked up after a temporary lull in March and volumes have been keeping up with pre-Easter demand. The Fish Pool Index for fresh whole fish of out Norway was at NOK 67.96 per kg as of week 14, around 10 percent lower than the same week in 2018 but still easily high enough to maintain healthy producer margins. For the first quarter Salmon - origin: Norway of 2019, Norwegian salmon exports were up by 1 percent in volume terms and 7 percent in NOK/kg value terms compared with Q1 2018, according 100.0 68.23 90.0 to the most recent figures published by the 80.0 70.0 Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC). Norwegian 60.0 50.0 67.25 salmon export volume for the quarter reached 40.0 30.0 20.0 247 000 tonnes, worth NOK 16.7 billion, with 10.0 0.0 an increasing focus on fillets. Norway’s salmon export revenue from EU28 markets rose by 5 percent over the same period, a significantly 3-4 kg 6-7 lower growth rate than the 20 percent increase observed for exports destined for the US market. This development reflects the recent strengthening of the Norwegian krone versus the euro after a long downward trend, which may divert Norwegian exporters’ attention away from core EU markets this year. In the UK, prices for Scottish farmed Atlantics are reportedly only marginally below the same time last year, with 4-5 kg fish selling for around GBP 7 per kg as of week 16. Brexit concerns have been put on hold for now as the deadline has been pushed back to 31 October. However, there is no more certainty as to the terms of the UK’s exit from the EU28 and what implications may or may not have for the salmon industry. As Easter approaches, a reduction in harvesting days and strong demand will likely see prices rise in the third week of April. This is expected to be followed by a decline to around NOK 60 per kg by the start of the third quarter. Forward prices at Fish Pool for Q2 and Q3 are stable at NOK 66.80 and NOK 58.53 per kg respectively. Biomasses at Norwegian farms were up 3
5
percent year-on-year as of the end of February and total global supply of farmed Atlantics is expected to rise by some 4-5 percent in 2019, keeping prices at around NOK 60 per kg for most of the year despite continued demand growth. While fish health remains a significant issue and a major component of production costs, continued profitability for salmon farmers can be expected in most producing regions.
TROUT Norwegian farmed trout harvests are significantly higher in 2019 after a long period of tight supply. Biomasses were 20 percent higher as of the end of February and NSC figures put export volumes 13 percent higher at 11 100 tonnes for the first quarter. Demand is good, particularly for fillets, and prices are rising despite increased supply. Export prices for fresh Norwegian trout were some 6 percent higher as of week 13 and export revenue was up by 22 percent in the first quarter.
SEABASS SEABREAM Recently reported financial results for Greek aquaculture companies in 2018 reflect the damage inflicted by low bass and bream prices across all European markets, a SEABASS/SEABREAM - in Italy origin: Greece consequence of excess supply availability EUR/kg and a very weak Turkish lira that has been 6.5 facilitating Turkish exports to the EU28. 6.0 5.5 Similar market conditions are currently 4.30 5.0 prevailing in 2019, and prices are stuck at 4.5 low levels in April with some smaller size 4.0 3.90 3.5 fish actually seeing price declines 3.0 compared with last month. The demand outlook is also worse overall than last year. The economic forecast for the major Seabass fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc Seabream fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc Italian market is somewhat negative and the Turkish domestic market is also deteriorating. The latest export figures show an increasing share of production being directed to non-traditional markets, as exporters seek to mitigate the price impact of increased harvests by focusing on new regions.
