Issue 7/2019 July 2019 Index for prices
Latest trends The unusually high temperatures reached in Europe at the end of June have negatively impacted fish consumption and demand. Overall, prices trended downward, even throughout the holiday period when consumption of seafood is typically high. Tuna prices have dropped to their lowest level in 4 years, and canned tuna demand is reportedly very weak in the major markets, particularly in Europe.

Consumption of wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus), is still limited due to the very high temperatures experienced in Southern Europe. Catches of Gadus macrocephalus are good at present and this is forecast to continue over the coming months.

For wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin, cod supplies are tighter. Factory capacity is mainly focused on the production of fresh fish, which is financially less costly as sales are generated relatively faster. Haddock prices in Sweden have recovered from the low levels reached in June 2019 and further price increases are likely on the back of limited supply. Prices of cultured turbot are stable at present, with good production matched by strong demand.

The 3-month FAD closure in the Western and Central Pacific started on 1 July and fishing is reported to have slowed to a moderate rate. Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel Raw material inventories at Thai canneries remain close to full capacity. While there is still a backlog of carriers at Bangkok Port, the situation is expected to improve with the slow-down in fishing during the FAD closure period. In the meantime, skipjack prices continue to fall. Catches in the Indian Ocean remain low and raw material inventories at local canneries are moderate. Skipjack prices continue to decline, while yellowfin prices are stable. Some vessels remain tied up due to the poor fishing and low prices.
2
Fishing in the Eastern Pacific remains good and raw material inventories at local canneries remain high. There are a large number of tuna vessels waiting in port to unload, but there has been a reduction in the number of carriers arriving from the Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific. Skipjack prices have fallen slightly while yellow fin prices remain stable. The first 2-month IATTC ‘veda’ will commence on 29 July. Many vessels are likely to choose TUNA - Spanish canneries this veda as market conditions are very poor EUR/kg 1.90 at present. 3.0 2.5
Catch rates in the Atlantic Ocean remain moderate while raw material inventories at local canneries have improved slightly to lowto-moderate. Skipjack and yellowfin prices continue to decrease worldwide. Skipjack and yellowfin prices in Spain have fallen, while the market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins is steady.

SMALL PELAGICS There is some good news for small pelagics in Northern Europe. Norwegian spring-spawning herring stock index is at the same level as in 2018; this should mean stable quotas year-onyear. The stock index is based on the number of herring per age group, and helps to form the basis for next year's quota advice, which should come in the fall. This year, as last, the 2013 year class dominates the stock's make-up. This stock index has been relatively stable since 2012. Even though most of the herring from the spring spawning is used for fishmeal production, good availability for human consumption will translate into steady prices for herring in the European market.
CEPHALOPODS It is low season for octopus in Indonesia at present and supply is limited. Meanwhile, demand is good and prices are stable. Catches can be expected to revert to normal levels in November. SQUID - in Italy, origin: South Africa The Loligo squid fishery in South Africa reopened on 1 July, but catches have been limited due to weather conditions. The most recent prices have been quoted on very small stocks and prices next month will be more representative. The South African rand is strong at present, which will drag on export sales.

CRUSTACEANS Raw material prices for Indonesian shrimp have been increasing surprisingly fast compared with last month. This is the result of the limited volumes available after a delayed start to production, a consequence of the Ramadan festive period. The shrimp market appears to be stabilizing at present and prices should fall back when the harvesting period begins in August. The start of the shrimp fishing campaign in ARGENTINA RED SHRIMP - origin: Argentina has been marked by good catches, with shrimp sizes even bigger than usual EUR/kg 7.60 (mostly in 20/30 and 10/20 category). This 10.5 6.50 additional supply, combined with the stocks 9.0 6.40 left over from the fishing in the North from 7.5 6.0 March to May and weak demand in Asia, is 6.50 4.5 pushing prices downward. In Europe, the low 3.0 price levels are generating uncertainty and importers are hesitant to build up stocks. This is in turn accelerating the price decline, > 10-20 pc/kg > 20-30 > 30-40 > 40-60 despite the pick-up in sales over the summer. Large shrimp prices dropped by EUR 0.20 per kg, while prices for the smaller counts remained stable. It is very likely that all sizes will converge to sell at the same price level, similar to what happened back in summer 2017. Spring season for Canadian lobster got off to a slightly delayed start at the beginning of May due to bad weather. Fishermen were given an extension of a few days at the end of season in early July as a result, but now the spring lobster season is officially over. Raw material prices remained quite stable throughout the season, but overall a little higher than last year. This translated into higher prices for whole lobster compared with last year, but the new drop in import duties under the CETA agreement offset the increase to an extent. The raw lobster tail market in USA is still characterised by strong demand and prices remain very high. Any potential softening of prices will probably depend on the supply of rock lobster, and the market will be watching for any indications at the start of the season in Central America.Cooked lobster meat prices are stable, except for minced meat, for which prices have nearly doubled due to huge demand from Asia, especially the Republic of Korea. Crab prices are decreasing as we enter the new fishing season.

BIVALVES Bouchot mussel supply has increased in France as we enter the summer season, while the French market for oysters is seasonally slow. The French research institution IFREMER have reported higher mortalities in seed oysters over the summer and, although it is too early to precisely compare these figures with last year’s results, the extremely hot weather in late June will have had an impact.

SALMON Spot market prices for farmed Atlantic salmon from Norway were averaging NOK 60.05 per kg in week 27 of 2019, according to the Fish Pool Index (FPI). This is some 6 percent higher than the same week in 2018, and approximately on a par with the FPI in mid-June. The Norwegian industry took a hit in the second quarter of this year as mortalities resulting from a severe algal bloom in May and June reached 8 million fish, translating into some 40 000 tonnes of lost supply according to the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC). In July, the Norwegian government announced it would allow the farms affected by the bloom to increase their production outside of normal regulatory limits over the next 5 years. The cumulative losses, though substantial relative to comparable events, are still small in the context of total global production and the impact on the market is expected to be manageable. Prices fell during the bloom as farmers scrambled to save marketable fish, but continuing good demand has kept export revenues high. The most recent figures from the NSC show a 6 percent increase in Norwegian salmon export sales in the first half of the year compared with the first half of 2018, up to NOK 34.6 billion. Total export volume increased by 5 percent over the same period, reflecting a marginally higher average price. Buyers from core markets in the EU such as Poland and France are increasingly having to compete with importers in China, a market which is opening up to the Norwegian industry after many years of challenges.

The Norwegian krone has weakened further this year, another important tailwind for continued growth. In the United Kingdom, prices around GBP 5.4 per kg were being quoted for 4-5 kg
5
Scottish salmon in week 28, marginally below last year’s level. Diversification of export markets has helped the Scottish industry recover this year after a difficult year in 2018. Salmon forward prices for the remainder of 2019 are steady at NOK 57.96 per kg for the last two quarters. This would represent a small increase compared with 2018, underlining the market’s revised expectation for somewhat tighter supply in the second half of this year. This has been compounded at the global level by slowing growth in Chile amidst biological issues. A slight dip in August and September is still expected, however, due to seasonal increases in harvests at European farms.
TROUT The most recent prices for farmed Norwegian trout reflect a 13 percent year-on-year decline for week 26, with average export prices for fresh whole fish of NOK 54.27 per kg. Significantly higher biomasses at Norwegian trout farms were reported in May, indicating good supply growth potential, but the full impact of the algal bloom, if any, is not yet clear. Despite the recent drop in prices, a weak krone, good demand for fillets and an expanding market in the United States of America saw Norway’s trout exports reach 24 700 tonnes, worth NOK 1.7 billion, in the first half of the year, increases of 19 percent and 20 percent respectively.
SEABASS SEABREAM
The divergence in price trends between SEABASS/SEABREAM - in Italy origin: Greece farmed seabass and farmed seabream continued in July, with the latter species EUR/kg faring considerably better. Prices for 6.5 6.0 seabass slid further to EUR 3.60 per kg for 5.5 4.40 300-450g Greek fish on the Italian market 5.0 4.5 in July, while prices for similar-sized 4.0 3.60 bream were approximately on a par with 3.5 3.0 2018 prices for the same month at EUR 4.40 per kg. This same trend is evident in other major EU markets, despite analyst Seabass fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc Seabream fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc forecasts for much reduced supply growth of bass in 2019 relative to bream. Meanwhile, in June, four farms in Greece and Turkey became the first in the world to receive certification under the new Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)’s standard for bass, bream and meagre. Demand for this new certification is reportedly strong, pointing to the need for marketers to differentiate themselves in an oversupplied market. In the longer term, there is a growing consensus that the bust stage of the boom-and-bust cycle may be approaching its end as a sharp reduction in juvenile stocking is expected in 2019.
