Issue 6/2019 June 2019 Index for prices
Latest trends Moderate demand is reported in seafood markets in both Europe and Asia, with seasonally average landings and average to lowerthan-average price ranges. Prices for shrimp and tuna, in particular, have been trending steeply downwards. Summer is generally a period of high fish consumption, however, and this added demand combined with limited production is pushing up prices of squid and groundfish.
GROUNDFISH In Poland, cod catches have been moderate, but demand has also been limited due to cod’s cultural status as a winter seafood option. Overall, prices in Poland have increased slightly. Similar price developments have been reported on the Russian market for groundfish. COD - in Poland (FOB, origin: Baltic Sea)

Haddock is in good supply in Sweden. Prices have improved somewhat compared with the extremely low levels reached in May but are still relatively low compared with previous years. Summer is typically a good sales period for Spanish cultured turbot as the species is favored by higher-end restaurants. Prices are stable as production is strong at present.

TURBOT - in Spain, origin: Spain Consumption of wet-salted cod fillets from EUR/kg frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus) generally slows down at this time of year with 29.0 27.0 the arrival of warmer weather, as salted cod is 25.0 23.0 21.0 seen as a traditional dish for the autumn-winter 19.0 17.0 season. At the same time, raw material supply 15.0 13.0 is limited for wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus 11.0 9.0 morhua) from fresh fish of Faroese and 7.0 5.0 Icelandic origin, due primarily to the Faroese and Icelandic fleets targeting ling rather than Fresh - whole, cultured 0.5-1kg/pc cod at this time of year. Overall, demand for 1-2 kg/pc 2-3 kg/pc cured cod is low and prices are stable, but tight cod supply should see prices rise again as autumn approaches. Prices for Dutch sole normally drop sharply in June as an increasing number of fish are carrying eggs and the quality of the product declines significantly. However, this change has not taken place so far this year, most likely due to a long winter and low ocean temperatures. Prices of Dover sole imported into Italy reached a high of EUR 17.37 per kg for large sizes, which corresponds to a retail price of over EUR 40.00 per kg. This is an elevated level historically speaking and most purchases are by high-end restaurants only.

TUNA - BILLFISHES Although reports suggest consumer demand is stable, tuna prices collapsed in June 2019, with a decline of USD 400 per tonne recorded in just two months. The declining price of raw material is translating into reduced product prices for TUNA - Pacific Ocean canneries. USD/kg
Good fishing in the Western and Central Pacific has continued and raw material inventories at Thai canneries remain close to full capacity. Bangkok Port remains congested as the backlog of carriers has yet to be cleared and more carriers continue to arrive. Skipjack prices have fallen sharply once again to USD 1 100 – 1 125 CFR Bangkok, the lowest level since June 2015. The 3-month FAD closure in the Western and Central Pacific will start on 1 July.

SMALL PELAGICS Polish catches of herring and sprat are reportedly good, in line with expected seasonal trends, and prices have fallen.
CEPHALOPODS Octopus is still off-season in Indonesia and the supply of octopus raw material is very limited. Prices remain high on the European market. Argentine squid production was lower in the first five months of the year compared with the same period in 2018. Some 92 000 tonnes were landed, compared with 107 000 tonnes in January to May 2018. Argentine squid production directly impacts the world market, and the reduction in catches has pushed squid prices some 10 percent higher since January 2019.

Crab prices are decreasing as we enter the new fishing season. For lobster, prices remain high at wholesale, but seasonal trends should see them start to weaken at production level as Canadian lobster production begins to hit the market at the start of July.

SALMON Over the last few weeks, the global farmed salmon industry’s attention has been focused on Norway, where an algal bloom starting in mid-May in the north of the country has inflicted a high number of mortalities at Atlantic salmon farms. Algal blooms occur only when conditions are optimal but can be triggered by warming Salmon - origin: Norway water temperatures. The recent bloom is reported to have been the worst in decades, NOK/kg affecting nine aquaculture companies and 100.0 65.16 90.0 killing 8 million fish, which equates to a 80.0 70.0 decrease in marketable supply of some 40,000 60.0 50.0 56.39 tonnes. Total financial losses of some 2.2 40.0 30.0 billion krone have been projected. The 20.0 10.0 0.0 immediate effect on prices was to drive them downwards, as farmers were forced into early harvesting to salvage as many fish as possible, and export volumes rose. 3-4 kg 6-7
5
According to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), Norway exported 91 000 tonnes of salmon in May worth NOK 6.1 billion, increases of 14 percent and 1 percent respectively compared with May 2018. The downward trend in prices was short-lived, however, and week 23 saw the Fish Pool Index rise to NOK 60.86 per kg to return to 2018 price levels after dropping earlier in the second quarter. In the UK, authorities have taken steps to incentivize improved industry practices for managing sea lice levels with the introduction of new government legislation requiring Scottish salmon farmers to report sea lice figures on a weekly basis, with levels above certain limits triggering enforcement actions. The algal bloom mortalities and large-scale early harvesting of fish at Norwegian farms over recent weeks will mean tighter supply for the second half of the year. Analysts are anticipating around a 2 percent downward adjustment, which would translate into a 3 percent increase in global production of farmed Atlantic salmon for 2019. Demand for salmon remains strong across the world and this expected slowdown in supply growth has sent forward prices for the remainder of the year sharply upwards. Fish Pool reports average forward prices for June of NOK 64.75 per kg and quotes for Q3 and Q4 now stand at NOK 58.10 and NOK 58.70 per kg respectively. In the UK, the reduction in total supply caused by the algal bloom and the resulting increase in prices will boost the Scottish industry’s revenues this year after a difficult 2018.
TROUT Trout are farmed in open net pens along the Norwegian coast using largely the same technologies as those employed in the Atlantic salmon sector. Industry statistics suggest the impact of the algal bloom on the smaller trout aquaculture sector has been similar, although the number of trout mortalities is yet to be reported. Trout exports spiked in the second half of May, and total exports for the month were up 11 percent by volume and 3 percent by value to 4 600 tonnes worth NOK 307 million, according to the NSC. Average prices for fresh trout out of Norway were 14 percent down year-on-year at NOK 55.22 per kg as of week 22, but relatively tighter supply can be expected for the remainder of the year.
SEABASS SEABREAM The outlook for the Mediterranean bass and bream aquaculture sector remains quite bleak, with oversupply and depressed prices set to continue. Although tighter supply is on the horizon in 2020, early year figures in 2019 suggest Turkish export volume growth has SEABASS/SEABREAM - in Italy origin: continued, adding to the problems faced by EUR/kg a market that is already swamped by fish. 6.5 Market breadth and depth is increasing, but 6.0 5.5 demand growth has not been sufficient to 5.0 4.30 keep pace with the rate of production 4.5 4.0 expansion. The situation is significantly 3.5 3.70 worse in the case of bass, with prices sinking 3.0 even lower this month at precisely the time of year when they traditionally hit their Seabass fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc Seabream fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc annual peak. In Italy, Greek 300-450 g bass are selling at a historically low price of EUR 3.70 per kg this month. The market balance for bream is relatively tighter, however, and June
