Issue 9/2019 September 2019 Index for prices
Latest trends Both the European and Asian markets are characterised by limited activity and average demand at present. Landings are slow and prices are generally low to average. Vigo will again be the meeting place for seafood traders from all over Europe at the CONXEMAR seafood exhibition on 1-3 October 2019.
GROUNDFISH According to Regulation (EU) 2019/1248 of 22 July 2019, fishing for cod is now prohibited in ICES 24, 25 and 26 Baltic subdivisions from 23 July until 31 December 2019. Prices of cod in Poland are likely to rise as a result. COD - in Poland (FOB, origin: Baltic Sea)

Consumption of wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus), has started to increase in Southern Europe due to a slight decrease in temperatures. Raw material prices are trending upward. Besides Europe, demand for frozen cod is also coming from China, Japan and USA. In the market for wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin, there is little cod available on the producer side. Consumption, on the other hand, has Sole - origin: Netherlands started to increase, and the expected result EUR/kg 25.0 19.50 is higher prices later on this year. 20.0
Fresh sole prices are extremely high at present and are still rising. Large sole is selling at an almost record price of EUR 20 per kg. The differential between large and smaller sized sole has increased strongly and is now almost 2:1.

TUNA - BILLFISHES
The Western and Central Pacific FAD closure is in its final month and poor fishing persists. The number of carriers arriving in Thailand is low as a result. Despite this, raw material inventories at Thai canneries are healthy. Skipjack prices continue to increase due to the low catches. Fishing and raw material inventories at local canneries in the Indian Ocean remain at moderate levels. Reports suggest that some vessels have already reached their yellowfin quota for 2019 and will not be allowed to fish for the rest of the year. Other vessels are either close to the limit or managing their fishing efforts to conserve the quota. Skipjack prices remain stable while yellowfin prices have fallen slightly.

The first 2-month IATTC ‘veda’ in the Eastern Pacific is still in effect until 8 October 2019. Fishing is reported to be poor for the vessels that opted to continue fishing during this period. Raw material inventories at local canneries remains at a healthy level for now. Skipjack prices continue to rise while yellowfin prices are stable.
2
Catch rates and raw material inventories at local canneries in the Atlantic Ocean remain moderate. Some vessels are reportedly approaching the bigeye quota limit and will TUNA - Spanish canneries have to manage their fishing efforts EUR/kg 2.20 accordingly. Both skipjack and yellowfin 3.0 2.5 prices remain stable. 2.0
There is little movement in the European market, due partially to the closure of canneries in August. Skipjack prices are steady while yellowfin prices have increased slightly. The market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins is stable.

SMALL PELAGICS Herring and mackerel catches were reported to be good in Norwegian waters in September, with a high proportion of large fish being landed. In Poland, catches of herring have been moderate, but prices have declined in line with prevailing trends..
CEPHALOPODS Weak Chinese demand for cuttlefish combined with low prices has also pushed prices down on the lacklustre European market. The supply of octopus raw material from Indonesia has been increasing and a slower than expected market has led to a softening of prices. The squid market is characterised by low catches and sky high prices. Fishing is slow in South Africa and prices of large squid have remained at the record levels reached in August 2019, while smaller sized squid are also selling at higher prices. CRUSTACEANS The raw material situation in Indonesia has improved compared with last month. However, the difficult market conditions experienced mid-year saw a reduction in the number of farmers seeding small shrimp, meaning that the majority of production this month is of large sized shrimp. The shrimp season in Argentina this year is short at just four months. As a result, catches are expected to be below the record landings of the last two years. Catches in Argentina in the last few weeks begin to fall. Japanese demand for Argentine shrimp is strong and the country has also started buying for the New Year. This news is helping prices to stabilize, after weeks of price falls. Catches have consisted of a high proportion of large sized shrimp, and prices for these sizes have fallen, almost dropping to the level of small sizes. In Italian supermarkets, large sized shrimp from Argentina are now being sold at prices below USD 10 per kg. Crab and lobster landings in Europe are high at this time of year and prices are decreasing. Demand is reportedly good. CRAB - in France, origin: Europe

SALMON Prices for farmed Atlantic salmon have continued their post-summer drop in September, going against the prediction of the majority of analysts who had expected tighter supply to kick in and halt the downward trend. In week 36, the Norwegian Fish Pool Index was down to NOK 47.06 per kg, well below the NOK 62.6 per kg observed in the equivalent week in 2018. For some salmon farmers, these prices are now close to production costs, threatening positive margins for the first time in 4-5 years. The prevailing consensus is that strong fish growth in July and August, evidenced by high feed sales, and early harvests related to disease control has seen significantly higher than expected volumes of salmon hit European markets over the last few weeks. An additional contributing factor is the increase in volumes from other suppliers this year, including Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland. September prices are now substantially lower than last month, when the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) reported record export sales for the Norwegian farmed salmon sector on the back of high volumes, a weak krone and strong demand from Asia, particularly for larger fish. NSC figures show a 5 percent and 6 percent year-on-year increase in the value and volume of Norway’s salmon exports for August respectively, with a total of 104 000 tonnes exported worth NOK 6.2 billion. In the first 8 months of 2019, Norway exported 698 000 tonnes worth NOK 46.5 billion. In the UK, Scottish salmon exporters have also seen positive sales development this year, largely due to EU demand. However, the UK industry has also seen prices drop in line with their Norwegian counterparts, with some traders reporting prices as low as GBP 4.20-4.30 per kg for mid-size fish in week 35.

The most recent biomass figures from Norway suggest that the European salmon market is likely to remain under price pressure for the remainder of September and early October, but prices are expected to rise over the course of the fourth quarter. Forward prices reflect market expectation for prices in the NOK mid-60s by the end of the year. Current forecasts put global growth for 2019 as a whole at around 4-5 percent. The outlook remains positive in the longer term but less impressive financial results earlier this year and the recent price drop will translate into heightened caution across the sector.
TROUT In week 35, prices for fresh farmed Norwegian trout were 19 percent below their equivalents last year, at NOK 40 per kg. Production so far this year has been some 12 percent above last year and biomasses remain high. The NSC reported a 61 percent increase in exported volume in August to 5 808 tonnes, accompanied by a 45 percent increase in value to NOK 325 million. The cumulative total in the first 8 months of the year was 55 000 tonnes exported worth NOK 2.3 billion.
SEABASS SEABREAM There has been little change in prices for all sizes of farmed bass and bream on the European market this month. The pronounced divergence in price trends between the two species is persisting, with Italian market prices for 300-450 g Greek-origin bass some 80 cents below the equivalent for bream in per kg terms. There is a relative surplus of larger fish on the market for both species and prices for these sizes are well below the same period last year. Demand can now be expected to weaken for the remainder of the year as the weather grows colder. Prices are unlikely to show much upward movement as a result but the longer-term supply outlook is for decreased harvests from the major producers over the next couple of years.
