February 2021

Shutdowns, and reductions in opening hours, continue to be widely enforced in the hotel, restaurant and catering (HORECA) sector in most European countries. In addition, all carnival activities have been prohibited, which means a reduction in the consumption of the traditional fish dishes served at these events, such as pickled herring. The result is persisting weak demand in European seafood markets, although the severity of the impact differs between species, with squid, lobster and bivalves particularly affected. Lenten season is normally a major consumption period for seafood, but this year buyers are hesitant to stock up in advance, instead adopting a wait-and-see attitude. While last year saw a pronounced shift in consumer preferences towards more frozen seafood consumption, some interest in traditional fish products is now remerging, with a traditional fish mongers seeing more activity. This trend, if confirmed in the coming months, could mark the start of the recovery of the market for fresh fish from small-scale fisheries, which were badly affected by the pandemic. Overall, fish producers and processors are adapting to the new situation and shocks are becoming less severe, but alternative sales channels such as e-commerce are still less developed in Europe than in China and other Asian countries.

GROUNDFISH Norwegian frozen cod exports suffered from the impact of COVID-19 last year. While the total quantity was stable at 58 000 tonnes, the total value declined by 8 percent to USD 230 million. This drop was caused by lower frozen cod prices on the world market. China remains the top market for Norwegian frozen cod, accounting for 40 percent of the total value, and China-destined exports were the main contributor to the decline.

The market of wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus), and wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin generally slows down at this time of year. Prices are expected to fall slightly as a result. However, while COVID-19 restrictions have led to an increased dependence on supermarkets sales, which is not the ideal outlet for cured cod, the start of the vaccination rollout has led to a general wave of optimism and the recent re- TURBOT - in Spain, origin: Spain opening of open-air markets has EUR/kg boosted consumption of these 30.0 28.0 products, which are traditionally sold 26.0 24.0 22.0 by fish specialists. TUNA - BILLFISHES There is a lack of containers for frozen tuna shipments at present, and the cost of freight is soaring. There are reports of rates of USD 8 000 for one container of frozen tuna sent from Asia to Latin America. Demand for finished TUNA - Pacific Ocean product is low at the moment, as USD/kg supermarkets in Europe still have stocks of 3.0 canned tuna due to over-purchases during 2.5 1.70 the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last 2.0 1.5 1.20 year. 1.0 0.5

Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific (WCP) has slowed to a moderate rate while raw material inventories at Thai canneries Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel remain healthy. Bangkok port is still congested, mainly due to the slower unloading rate resulting from the COVID-19 measures implemented to counter the spike in cases last month. Skipjack prices continue to fall. Vessels in the Indian Ocean are still reporting TUNA - Indian/Atlantic Oceans poor catches. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain at moderate levels for EUR/kg 3.0 now. Despite the poor fishing, skipjack prices 2.5 1.80 have fallen, in line with price movements in 2.0 1.80 the Thai market. Yellowfin prices are stable 1.5 1.15 1.0 at Indian Ocean canneries. 1.05 0.5

The FAD closure in the Atlantic Ocean continues to be in force and catches remains very poor. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain short. Both skipjack and yellowfin prices are stable. The IATTC ‘veda’ has ended in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, and about 60 percent of the fleet is currently fishing. Fishing is reported to be good, with the fleet mainly targeting yellowfin. While raw material inventories at local canneries remain moderate, there is high demand for Ecuadorian, EU duty free eligible skipjack. Both skipjack and yellowfin prices have fallen slightly, but less quickly than Bangkok prices. As a result, the price differential between Manta and Bangkok has reached a new record of USD 500 per tonne.

SMALL PELAGICS The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has announced the withdrawal of the certification of the Atlanto-Scandic herring and blue whiting fisheries. Unlike the European mackerel fishery, which lost its MSC certification in 2019, the herring sector includes some smaller, alternative fisheries, such as the North Sea Herring - in Poland fresh herring fishery, which still has MSC certification. While prices for Atlanto-Scandic USD/kg 0.7 herring are likely to decline with the loss of 0.6 MSC certification, prices for North sea herring 0.5 0.4 are likely to rise as environmentally- 0.3 0.2 conscious consumers will want to buy this fish 0.1 rather than the non-MSC certified fish. 0.0 However, observers warn not to expect price differences to be very significant. When fresh mackerel lost its certification, the responses by both retailers and consumers were rather moderate.

CEPHALOPODS Octopus fishing in Indonesia is at its seasonal peak, but prices remain high. Processors are also building up coldstorage holdings to prepare for the period of lower production coming up in May. Frozen octopus imports into Spain during 2020 suffered from restrictions imposed on the HORECA sector. In the first ten months of the year, import value was USD 340 million, a 25 percent reduction from the same period last year. Morocco continued to be the main supplier, posting a 16 percent decline in export value. Mauritania, the second largest supplier, reported a 26 percent decline. Portugal (-58 percent) and Senegal (-67 percent) registered even larger drops. 4

One of most important events in in the squid sector this month is the failure of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO) to agree on measures to limit giant squid fishing and reduce fleet capacity. Earlier this year, large European fish importers stated that they would refrain from buying giant squid from Eastern Pacific squid fishing countries if there were no regulations in place. Distant fishing SQUID - in Italy, origin: South Africa nations such as China (Mainland and EUR/kg 9.0 Taiwan Province) and the Republic of 8.0 Korea fiercely rejected proposed 7.0 6.0 changes to the present rules. 5.0 4.0 3.0

Squid catches have been moderate in South Africa and the European market is weak. Limited volumes are being Squid - Whole, FAS, size M exported and it appears that European buyers are reluctant to build up stocks so further weakness is possible. The local currency (South African Rand) has firmed which has also reduced the value from the exporters’ perspective.

CRUSTACEANS Despite the closure of the food service sector, shrimp prices are trending upwards. One reason is the strong demand from China associated with the New Year festivities. Compared with last year, when the pandemic saw all festivities halted, this year demand has been strong, especially close to the event. This, together with low coldstorage holdings, has contributed to higher shrimp prices in Europe. However, this upward movement is expected to be shortlived, with prices are expected to decline over the next four or five weeks in the run up to Easter. Crab and lobster sales are heavily dependent on the restaurant sector, and as a result COVID-19 restrictions continue to impact negatively this market segment.

BIVALVES France closed restaurants and bars again on 30 October 2020 and no definite opening date has yet been announced due to fears of the new COVID-19 variants. This is obviously very bad news for festive seafood products, especially shellfish such as oysters. However, retail sales in December for seafood were positive, according to Nielsen, with an increase in sales MUSSEL BOUCHOT - in France of 32% for fresh fish and shellfish at retail EUR/kg 5.50 level. Consumers have apparently 6.0 5.5 compensated for limitations on restaurant 5.0 dining by increasing home consumption. The 4.5 French bouchot mussel season is coming to 4.0 3.5 an end with the AOP (PDO) Baie Mont St 3.0 Michel closed since 7 January 2021. The AOP covers origin, meat content, traceability and Monthly average consumer prices in metropolitan France frequent controls. Following the restaurant closures, oyster producers’ main sales outlets are retail and takeaway or home delivery. Bivalves markets have been severely impacted by Brexit. Live bivalve molluscs that are ready for human consumption – such as those from Class A waters or depurated in the United Kingdom of Greater Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) – can continue to be exported to the European Union but there are few Class A waters in the UK. Most molluscs there are harvested from Class B waters and must therefore be depurated before they are seen as fit for human consumption. However, the country is lacking the required infrastructure to do this. Until this year, these bivalves could be purified in tanks once they reached their destination, but now with Brexit this is no longer legal. The European Union’s ban applies to both wild-caught and farmed shellfish.

FRESHWATER COVID-19 heavily impacted the pangasius market in Europe. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland reported a 20 Italy, origin: fillets Viet Nam percent decrease in pangasius fillet imports in Pangasius - in dethawed the first ten months of 2020. Ninety-five USD/kg percent of these imports come directly from 5.0 4.8 Viet Nam. In value terms, total imports during 4.5 4.3 4.0 the January-October period came to USD 38 3.8 3.5 million, down from USD 48 million in the same 3.3 3.0 period in the previous year. Spain, which used 2.8 2.5 to be the main market for pangasius fillets, lost further ground. In the first ten months of dethawed fillets 2020, Spanish imports of frozen pangasius 6

fillets totalled USD 12.9 million, 22 percent below the corresponding period of 2019. The unit value of these imports decreased sharply from USD 3.22 per kg in 2019 to USD 2.67 per kg in 2020.

SALMON Prices for farmed Atlantic salmon in early 2021 have fallen back to the low levels observed over the second half of last year, after what was a very weak end-of-year performance in historical terms. As of week 5, the NASDAQ salmon index (representing an average price of fresh, head-on-gutted Atlantic salmon exported out of Norway) was at NOK 44.65 per kg, a slight decline compared with 4 weeks prior and well down year-on-year. In Chile, some biological issues are reported to have forced early harvests while inventory levels are also high, contributing to plentiful supply on global markets. Levels in the NOK mid-40s are generally considered to be near breakeven levels for most producers. According to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), the weaker prices translated into a 23 percent drop in the value of Norway’s salmon exports in January, to NOK 5.2 billion. Volume increased by 11 percent, to 95 600 tonnes. Due to ongoing COVID-related issues inhibiting logistics and affecting market demand, particularly from food service, an increasing Salmon - origin: Norway proportion of Norway’s salmon NOK/kg exports are being directed to the core 100.0 45.01 90.0 EU market. In January, 67 percent of 80.0 70.0 Norwegian export supply was 60.0 50.0 44.68 40.0 absorbed by EU markets, compared 30.0 20.0 with 64 percent in January 2020. In 10.0 0.0 the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK), the Scottish industry is facing the same 3-4 kg 6-7 pandemic-related challenges but at the same time is contending with widespread delays and cancelled orders stemming from new paperwork requirements and other administrative burdens and uncertainties associated with the Brexit transition. While the focus is primarily on exports out of the UK, the same issues will also potentially affect Norwegian exports of salmon to the UK market. Prices for 3-6 kg Atlantic salmon (fresh, head-on-gutted) out of the UK are well down so far this year, quoted at GBP 4.60 per kg as of week 7 2021, compared with GBP 6 per kg in the same week last year. As of mid-February, farmers in Norway are reducing harvests and traders are reporting rising spot prices. This upward trend is expected to continue throughout the first half of the year, with NOK 54 per kg expected for June contracts. This should alleviate some of the current pressure on margins, and the supply situation is expected to improve further in the second half of the year. Despite the cautious optimism, the outlook for the sector is clouded by many uncertainties, with the high levels of frozen inventory and the pace of the HORECA sector’s recovery two of the most important from the salmon industry’s perspective. 7

TROUT The farmed trout sector in Norway benefitted from tightening supply at the beginning of February, and prices have picked up. In week 4, prices for fresh whole trout (headon-gutted) out of Norway averaged NOK 57.36 per kg, 5 percent below the same week in 2020. According to the NSC, the value of trout exports in January was down 38 percent compared with the same month last year, to NOK 134 million. Volume fell 32 percent for the month, to 3 800 tonnes.

SEABASS SEABREAM The winter period is typically quiet for the Mediterranean farmed bass and bream sector as a large proportion of demand is accounted for by the summer SEABASS/SEABREAM - in Italy origin: Greece restaurant trade, and this year the EUR/kg market also has to contend with 6.5 continuing lockdowns related to 6.0 5.5 COVID-19. For 2020 as a whole, 5.0 4.32 reported sales for bass and bream 4.5 4.0 4.20 aquaculture companies generally 3.5 3.0 reflect the negative impact of the pandemic on HORECA sector but Seabass fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc Seabream fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc continuing tight supply and a new focus on retail is softening the impact and putting the industry in a good position once the reopening of the restaurant trade gets underway in earnest. Prices for 300-450 g Greek fish on the Italian were quoted at EUR 4.20 per kg for bream and 4.32 per kg for bass as of February 2021, well above the same month last year in the case of bass but marginally down for bream.
