September 2021 9/2021
Latest trends These summer months have been characterized by strong demand, especially from the restaurant sector, and limited supply. The main tourist countries, such as Italy and Spain, reported a demand boom as restaurants reopened, together with a variety of other foodservice businesses. These sales consist primarily of high-end seafood products, including lobster, cephalopods, and shrimp. The improved market situation saw prices of seafood increase in the southern part of the continent by some 30 percent in just three months. At the same time, however, retailers have been encountering problems securing sufficient supply. Among the products which are practically impossible to find on the market are tuna for fresh consumption and octopus. As a result, seafood, particularly wild seafood, is increasingly becoming a product only available to higher-income households. Others have been looking for cheaper alternatives, which includes the major aquaculture species such as salmon, seabass, and seabream. The increase in fuel prices has also driven up the cost of fishing operations, meaning that the price hikes are likely to continue into the last quarter of the year.
GROUNDFISH Similarly, to other capture-sourced products, cod and hake are in limited supply all over the continent. Prices are rising daily, and further increases are likely. Meanwhile, prices for cultured turbot in Spain, the main producing country, are reportedly stable despite high demand.

TUNA - BILLFISHES The Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) closure in the Western and Central Pacific (WCP) remains in force until 30 September and fishing is reported to be very poor. Thai canneries continue to operate at reduced production capacity and raw material inventories are at healthy levels despite the poor fishing. Thai Union has stopped purchasing raw material, which has led to a sharp decline in demand for skipjack tuna, and prices have fallen sharply. Unloading of carriers continues to be on shorter hours due to TUNA - Pacific Ocean COVID-19 restrictions. USD/kg
The situation in the Indian Ocean remains the same, with fishing and raw material inventories at local canneries at moderate levels. Following the market trend in Thailand, skipjack and yellowfin prices are down.

Skipjack prices have increased slightly while yellowfin prices remain stable. The first 72-day IATTC ‘veda’ will remain in force until 8 October in the Eastern Pacific. While fishing in this region has improved, landings are short due to the reduction in fishing effort during the veda. Even with carrier landings from the WCP and the Indian Ocean, raw material inventories at local canneries have fallen to moderate levels. Prices for Ecuadorian, EU-eligible skipjack remain stable, despite the reduction in price levels in Bangkok. The price for yellowfin

has decreased slightly. Skipjack in Ecuador is currently USD 400 per tonne more expensive than the price paid in Bangkok, which will lead to a shift in supply towards the Manta market. European prices for skipjack have rebounded with improved demand as canneries in Spain and Italy restarted operations after the summer break. Yellowfin prices have also continued to increase, as have those for single cleaned skipjack loins.

CEPHALOPODS Landings of squid have been very low in South Africa, due to poor weather and poor fishing. Prices remain unchanged from last month on exceptionally low volumes. The octopus season in Indonesia started earlier than expected. However, prices have been constantly increasing in line with increasing demand. This upward trend is predicted to continue due to shortages from other supplier countries, particularly Morocco.

CRUSTACEANS Shrimp fishing in Argentina has started to slow after three months of very good catches. This sector has been hit by severe logistical challenges, especially for shipments of ARGENTINA RED SHRIMP - origin: Argentina frozen shrimp to the large European EUR/kg markets such as Spain and Italy, which 10.5 have been negatively affected by the 9.60 9.0 8.60 lack of containers. As a result, despite 7.5 8.10 good availability of shrimp in Argentina, 6.0 4.5 coldstorage holdings in Europe remain 3.0 limited and prices are stable, with small declines for some counts. European buyers have started to stock up for the > 10-20 pc/kg > 30-40 > 40-60 Christmas sales period, which is expected to be strong, provided that COVID-19 restrictions are not reimposed. Shrimp supply from Indonesia is seasonally normal at present but farmers are being conservative in restocking, expecting CRAB - in France, origin: Europe that demand might decline over the coming months. Prices are relatively EUR/kg 6.0 stable, although there have been some 5.0 increases for the bigger sizes. 4.0
Crab and lobster sales are benefiting from the reopening of full-service restaurants and prices are reportedly well above last years’ levels, reflecting some supply-demand tension.

BIVALVES Prices of cultured clams in Italy are soaring. It is reported that the wholesale price has reached EUR 12.00 per kg, compared with about EUR 6.50 per kg in normal years. This has pushed the retail price of this species up to around EUR 19.90 per kg. France has lifted restrictions on restaurants, which can now operate at full capacity both on the terrace and inside since 30 June. Since 9 August, restaurants are required to ensure that customers have a digital COVID-19 certificate for indoor dining. Over 77 percent of the French population aged over 12 years were vaccinated as of 1 September.

The French bouchot mussel season is in full swing, with the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel AOP season open since 23 July. The Dutch mussel season traditionally picks up in July, coinciding with the French Bouchot season, but the French market is currently dominated by Bouchot mussels. An exceptionally cool summer has led to slower growth rates for oysters. This is likely to lead to a possible tightening of shellfish supply, especially for certain oyster grades, which may be felt towards the end of the year.

FRESHWATER European Union imports of frozen pangasius fillets continue to fall. In the first five months of 2021, the EU imported some USD 44.5 million, which is 23 percent less than in the corresponding period of 2020, and only about half of the import value in the January-May period of 2019.

Germany is the second largest importing country, followed by Spain (which used to be the top importer of pangasius fillets).

SALMON European prices for farmed Atlantic salmon have fallen in September as improving demand has failed to sufficiently offset the effect of increased supply. According to the NASDAQ salmon index, prices for fresh whole farmed Atlantic salmon out of Norway were down 6.7 percent compared with 4 weeks prior, at NOK 51.97 per kg. The demand outlook in the US and Europe has picked up significantly this year in line with the reopening of foodservice businesses, partial recovery of the tourism sector and continued high levels of home consumption, but other factors have inhibited salmon trade with China. The worldwide Salmon - origin: Norway container shortage continues, while new NOK/kg phytosanitary import requirements at the 100.0 52.76 Chinese border is also expected to 90.0 80.0 70.0 contribute to delays. 60.0 50.0 40.0 30.0 20.0 10.0 0.0

Meanwhile, the seasonal post-summer harvesting spike in Europe is translating into a build up in supply in September which is behind the price decline. However, prices 4-5 kg 6-7 have remained significantly above last year’s levels for most of the third quarter and the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) reported record salmon export figures in August. According to the NSC, Norway exported 113 900 tonnes worth NOK 7 billion in August, increases of 21 percent and 33 percent respectively compared with August 2020. In particular, exports to Poland, a major processing center, have been given a boost by increased demand for processed and pre-packaged products at retail. In the UK, Q3 prices for farmed Scottish salmon have also been well above last year, although the gap has narrowed in recent weeks. In week 36, 3-6 kg fish was selling for GBP 4.80 per kg, compared with GBP 4.50 per kg in the same week last year. According to the Scottish Salmon Producers Organization (SSPO), UK whole fresh salmon exports to the EU were the one bright spot in the country’s seafood exports in the first half of the year, increasing 63 percent to 33 600 tonnes. The forecast for European salmon prices for the remainder of the year, as reflected in forward contract prices at Fish Pool, remain largely unchanged compared with last month. Harvest volumes are expected to drop in Chile, contributing to a relatively tight market balance, but supply volumes in Europe will be sufficient to keep prices around the NOK mid-50s until November, when end of year demand is expected to push them in the NOK 60s.
6
TROUT In contrast to salmon, Norwegian farmed trout supply remains tight, and export volumes are down year-on-year. The scarcity of fish combined with the improving market conditions is driving string price gains. According to the NSC, Norway exported 6 400 tonnes of trout worth NOK 404 million in August, respectively representing a decrease of 6 percent and an increase of 25 percent compared with the same month last year. As of week 35, fresh whole trout out of Norway was selling for NOK 56.68 per kg (FOB Grense), 39 percent above the same week last year.
SEABASS SEABREAM After a summer of relatively weak performance, historically speaking, prices for Greek seabass have risen this month. Greek 300-450 g fish were reportedly selling for EUR 4.70 per kg on the Italian market in September, an uptick of 0.40 per kg compared with August. The factors behind this SEABASS/SEABREAM - in Italy origin: Greece rise are not entirely clear, but it is EUR/kg possible this is a delayed indication of 6.5 improved foodservice demand and 6.0 higher tourist numbers this year. 5.5 5.0 4.70 Meanwhile, bream prices for 300-450 4.5 4.0 4.40 g fish of Greek origin in Italy have 3.5 remained stable, at EUR 4.40 per kg. 3.0 With relatively tight supply and a significantly stronger presence at retail Seabass fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc Seabream fresh whole 300-450 gr/pc established over the course of the pandemic, the bass and bream industry will be hoping to mitigate the effects of the traditional late-year foodservice demand lull this year.
