Q: Holiday time at our house means lots of cooking and eating! How can we make the most of our holiday time spent in the kitchen? A: If you do a lot of holiday baking, plan to make a day of it and do all your baking at once while the oven is heated up and ready to go! Take advantage of your energy-saving appliances like slow cookers and microwave ovens whenever possible – they use up to 75 percent less energy than your electric oven. And don't be afraid to use your dishwasher for clean up. It takes less water to run a load through the dishwasher than to wash them by hand. Try to limit the number of times you open the refrigerator door … up to 30 percent of the cooled air can escape every time you do. For more energy-saving ideas, call 1-800-ALLIANT to request our free PowerHouse brochure, Choosing and Using Appliances.
