4-H SpringFest awards MASON CITY — The first 4-H SpringFest held April 18, at North Iowa Area Community College, created an opportunity for 4-H members to improve their communication skills. Approximately 90 people watched as 4-H members competed in various classes. Awards were sponsored by the Cerro Gordo County 4-H Foundation and Kaplan University of Mason City. Communications division awards were presented in the area of Educational Presentations. Youths in 4H demonstrated something for the judges and were evaluated on their teaching and communication skills. Award winners in this division included: Clover Kid Ribbon Erin Smith 2nd Grade, “How to Make a Butterfly Cake.” Ribbon of Recognition Aunalea Timpe 6th “Global Greenhouse.” Ribbon of Merit Madalynn Cash 4th “Planting Flowers.” Jenna Smith 9th “Are you Active.” Kaytlyn Smith 6th “Vocals.” Tim Smith 6th “Parts of a Shotgun.” Ribbon of Excellence Clayton Sampson 8th “Secrets of Magic Through the Years.” Karah Smith 5th “Banana Bread.” Colin Sido 9th “Rice Sox” Ribbon of Excellence. Participants in 5th-12th grade are eligible to compete at state fair. Those selected to represent Cerro Gordo County at the Iowa State Fair are Clayton Sampson, Colin Sido and Karah Smith. Interpretative Reading is a new class and was

designed for youth to have the opportunity to speak in front of a group of people using a poem, book selection or something they wrote. All who participated in this division won a Ribbon of Excellence. They included: Katie Cash 9th “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs,” Sarah Stephany 9th “A Mother’s Love,” and Becca Nelson 7th “The Walrus and The Carpenter.” Extemporaneous Speaking contestants draw a topic and then have 30 minutes to develop a speech they deliver to the judges. Awards were presented to: Miranda Wulff 5th Ribbon of Recognition. Clayton Sampson 8th and Katie Cash 9th Ribbon of Excellence. Participants in 9th-12th grades are eligible to compete at the state fair. Katie Cash will represent Cerro Gordo County at the Iowa State Fair. Working Exhibits are designed to teach how to make or do something. This year rice sox, paper beads and symmetry snacks, were made. Ribbons of Excellence were presented to all three exhibits and all three are eligible to compete at the Iowa State Fair. Winners included: Colin Sido 9th “Rice Sox,” Kacy Sampson 5th“Paper Beads,” and Hannah and Moriah Wendel 8th and 10th “Symmetry Snacks.” Share the Fun is an opportunity for 4-H Youth to exhibit their skills in acting, singing, dancing or playing an instrument. All the contestants won a ribbon of recognition. Ribbon winners included the Junior Master Gardeners with “Feel the Sunshine,” and Mason City Challengers with “Go Green.”

The following acts were selected to represent Cerro Gordo County, and can be seen at the Iowa State Fair. They are Lincoln Peppy Pals 4-H Club with “Odds and Ends,” the Bits and Spurs 4H Club with “4-H’ers Got Talent,” and Danielle Butler with her song, “God’s Will.” Additionally, one Share the Fun act will serve as a state fair alternate and will participate in the Clay County Fair. That winner was Katie Cash and Sarah Stephany with their song, “I Feel Like a Woman.” Challenge classes were also a part of SpringFest. Various classes were selected to encourage 4-H’ers to try new projects. Entries were accepted in the following categories Cake Decorating, 4-Her’s in Action Photography, and Quilt Blocks. Judges choice awards were selected for the following: Cupcakes: Jenna Smith, Mason City Challengers 4H Club. Layer cake: Karan Smith, Junior Master Gardeners 4H Club. Sheet cake: Alisha Ungs, Ventura Hustlers. The People’s Choice award went to Kacy Sampson, Mason City Challengers. Judges choice quilt block winners were Dylana Luett and Becca Nelson.

MILITARY NOTES Army National Guard Private First Class Adam Romine, of Manly, completed the Motor Transport Operator Course, March 13. Romine was named to the Course Commandant List for academic achievement and superior personal performance during the eight week-long training. For his superior performance, Romine will be awarded the Iowa Army National Guard Leadership Ribbon with Torce Device. Romine joined the Iowa Army National Guard as a junior at Central Springs High School Jan. 26, 2007. He attended basic training the summer of 2007, returned to complete high school at Central Springs, and upon graduation began attending North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City. Upon his return from training, Romine will join his unit, the 1133rd Transportation Company (Rear Detachment) in Mason City, as a truck driver and continue his college coursework. Army Pvt. Gabriel A. Seaton Magee graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Knox, Ky., which included basic combat training and advanced individual training (AIT). Brian Funk was awarded the Best 3-D Plaque, one of the top three awards of the day for his abstract texture painting in low relief. Judging this year’s show was Ron Dinsdale, a professional sculptor, a 3-D art instructor at West Des Moines Valley High School, and the 2006 Iowa Art Educator of the Year. All fourteen pieces from the NCC show as well as those entered by Algona High School will be on exhibit at the Algona Public Library from April 17 to April 30, during regular library hours.

Newman High School band and choir students participated in the Iowa State Solo and Ensemble Music Festival, April 18, in Greene. Greg Branson, a senior, participated in a vocal solo and received a Division I rating. He also received the highest honor of the day as the outstanding vocalist in his performance center. Branson is a vocal student of Terence Shook. He was invited to participate in the Outstanding Performers Showcase Tuesday, May 12, in Ames, sponsored by the Iowa High School Music Association.
