Beaty, 45 years GARNER — Dr. and Mrs. Frank Beaty recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with a trip to Alaska. Frank Beaty and Judith Anne Crawford were married June 13, 1964, at Calvary Baptist Church in Belvidere, Ill. It was one week after he graduated from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. They began their lives together in Hermon, a small town south of Galesburg, Ill., where he served as pastor of Hermon Bible Church. They have three children: Andrew (and Karen) of Normal, Ill.; Stephen (and Kimberly) of Rolla, Mo.; and Esther (and Travis) of Stevensville, Mont. They also have 20 grandchildren. Presently Dr. Beaty is serving as Interim Pastor of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner. He is serving under the auspices of Interim Pastor Ministries.

Miner given $1,000 scholarship MASON CITY — Jason Miner is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship award from the Alexander Christian Foundation of Iowa for the 2009-10 school year. The purpose of the ACF is to provide funds and encouragement especially to people who want to enter a church-related vocation. Oettchen places 12th at bodybuilding competition Brandon Oettchen of Mason City competed in the 2009 Gopher State classic bodybuilding competition in St. Paul, Minn., on June 6, 2009. Brandon placed 12th out of 17 competitors in the light heavyweight class. This was Brandon’s first bodybuilding competition and he plans to do more. Newell given Oleson scholarship MASON CITY _ Benjamin Newell was named the recipient of the Bill Oleson annual scholarship which has been established at the First United Methodist Church, Mason City. The $1,000 scholarship was established for members of the First United Methodist Church who will be pursuing a secondary education as a fulltime student. Newell is majoring in finance and will continue his education next fall as a senior, at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

Verma presents medical research IOWA CITY — Rajiv Verma, of Mason City, was among more than 100 University of Iowa undergraduate students who presented their research at the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates (ICRU) Fifth Annual Spring Undergraduate Research Festival. The festival was held April 25, in the Blank Honors Center Atrium. Verma is an integrative physiology major working with mentor Susan Hagen
in the surgery department. His research was titled, “Are Medical Students Learning What Faculty Members are Trying to Teach?” He is the son of Rajinder and Asha Verma. Verma received recognition as an ICRU Research Fellow to pursue a specific research question and received $2,500 for the 2008-09 academic year. He will again be supported for the 2009-10 year as a ICRU Research Fellow and also received the award, as a ICRU Summer Research Fellow with a $2,500 stipend for this summer.

Jaycees honored at state convention MASON CITY — The Mason City Jaycees chapter was honored at the recent Iowa Jaycees midyear all state convention in Charles City. National awards were also officially given from the national year-end conference held in Crystal River, Fla., in March. The Mason City Jaycees received several membership awards and was recognized as the ninth best chapter in the country. Iowa was also recognized as the number one state in the nation at the event. At the state convention
in Charles City, the Mason City Jaycees received the following awards for their programming: Outstanding Mid-Year Membership Project for Buffalo Wild Wings M-Night, Outstanding Mid-Year Environmental Project for Evans Preserve Earth Day Cleanup, and the MidYear Gail Marshall Memorial Award for Hockey Shots, a youth hockey skills competition. On an individual basis, Mason City members Julie Bauer and Joshua Masson were awarded their sixth degrees. Degrees are given as a way to measure the well-roundedness of an individual member. The
highest ranking a person can receive is the tenth degree. Bauer also received a Top Local President Award for mid-year, and Masson was awarded for his accomplishments as District Director for Purple District 2. Masson achieved the award for Top Growth District at MidYear. The Mason City Jaycees was also given Parade of Chapters awards. Parade of Chapters ranks Jaycee chapters across the state according to different criteria, then overall. In the Programming Parade, Mason City ranked sixth. In the Membership Parade, Mason City
ranked first. Overall, Mason City was ranked second in the Parade of Chapters. The Mason City Jaycees is a professional organization for young people age 21 to 41. The Jaycees focus on volunteering, leadership development, networking, and individual development. The chapter meets bi-monthly on the second Wednesday and the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Pizza Ranch in Mason City. P.E.O. awards scholarships MASON CITY — Sara Berner, and Katie Haygood, both of Mason City, were awarded scholarships from the Iowa P.E.O. Project Fund. P.E.O Chapter IW, of Mason City, sponsored both students. Berner was awarded a $3,500 scholarship. She is a student at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. Haygood was awarded a $1,500 scholarship. She is a 2009 graduate of Mason City High School and will attend North Iowa Area Community College.
