Mary is the daughter of Marolyn Hayes of San Diego and the late John DeNora. Darren is the son of Dennis and Bev Hall of Mason City.

MILITARY NOTES Air Force Staff Sgt. Jamie A. Crooks arrived for duty at Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, to serve as a member of Joint Task Force-Bravo.

The task force is comprised of almost 600 U.S. military members and more than 650 U.S. and Honduran civilians who work in six different area units: the Joint Staff, the Army Forces, Air Force Forces, Joint Security Forces, the Medical Element, and the 1st Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment, a helicopter unit. Crooks is a fuels information service superintendent with 10 years of military service. He is the son of Dale and Linda Crooks, of Mason City.

Crooks is a 1997 graduate of Nora Springs-Rock Falls High School and received an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force, Maxwell Air Force Base, Gunter Annex, Montgomery, Ala., in 2007.

Student Poetry Contest CLEAR LAKE — A poem titled, “My Last Home,” written by Alysha Walker, of Clear Lake, is officially registered in The American Library of Poetry 2009 Student Poetry Contest.

Walker’s poem was submitted by her teacher at school.

Throughout the summer, semi-final and final rounds of grading by a review committee, will culminate in the Sept. 30, selection of this year’s division winners and runners-up, and the awarding of prizes.

Walker’s poem will also be published in a new book titled, “Inspired,” scheduled for release in the fall.

The book features only a select cross section of poems submitted for the contest.
