Janelle is the daughter of Joe and Janis Platts of Mason City, and the granddaughter of Dorothy Platts, also of Mason City. Nicholas is the son of Dan and Jean Mujica of Mason City, and the grandson of Joe and Lois Wollner of Bancroft and Julian and Sylvestra Mujica of Mason City. The bride wore a white strapless taffeta side drape gown with a metallic beaded lace bodice and trumpet skirt and a sweep train. Her matron of honor was Jessica Stockberger. The project included design and planning of a structure that would hold trash, yet still blend in the architecture of the museum itself. The project started with a metal frame, wooden sides, and wheels for transport. It finished with a color to match the color of the museum, and wooden shingles on the top and sides, that are the same ones used on the museum itself.
Ambassadorial scholarship KANAWHA — Jessica Abels, daughter of Dan and Maureen Abels, of Kanawha, was awarded a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship, by District 5970, for the 2010-2011 year. She is a senior at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., where she is majoring in international journalism. A graduate of West Hancock Community Schools in Britt, she spent three months studying European cultural studies at University College London. Abels’ award of up to $24,000 will be used to spend nine months studying in another country. Her preferred universities are City University, London; Cardiff University, Wales, and the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland. In December or January, Abels will be notified where she will study.

Rasmussen Institute graduate MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Doug Gardner, a Mason City, Iowa, native, graduated from the Rasmussen Leadership Institute program, Sept. 24. The RLI program is a training and professional development program for a select group of the education leader’s future leaders. Launched earlier this year by Rasmussen College, Inc., the RLI experience was offered to only 24 individuals who were selected out of more than 1,000 Rasmussen employees to participate. The program consisted of six months of training, professional development and workshops. Gardner is an Eagle Lake, Minn., resident and a 1974 graduate of Mason City High School. He is currently a bench director for Rasmussen College Inc., based in the Twin Cities, assisting each of Rasmussen’s cam-
puses with their development needs. Rasmussen has offices in Chicago, Orlando and the Twin Cities, and campuses in five midwest and southeast states.
National Achievement Scholarship Program ALGONA — David. W. Baxter, a senior at Algona High School, has been named a semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Program. The semifinalists have the opportunity to be among 800 finalists earning a total of $2.6 million in scholarships. Finalists will be named next spring. The program is a privately-financed academic competition created in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation.
Cowles Fellowship award INDIANOLA — Stephen Henrich, of Mason City, Iowa, received the Cowles Fellowship for the 200910 academic school year at Simpson College. The Cowles Fellowship is a part of the Simpson Sesquicentennial Scholarship Program, given in honor of Simpson’s 150th anniversary next year.

They were married Oct. 10, 1959, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Plymouth. They were blessed with three children, Brenda and Logan Wernet in Mason City, Angee Marshall in Stanhope, and Randee and Marcy Hyde in Grafton.
