The weather on Feb. 18, 1950, was cold and blustery with sun shining on a lot of snow, when Dick Nickerson, Clear Lake, and Pauline Wodarcak, Mason City, were united in marriage in the First Methodist Church of Mason City. She has earned CIML all conference academic awards, and received two academic letters. Bellevue graduates OMAHA, Neb. — Over 500 people participated in Bellevue University’s winter commencement, Jan. 30, at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Hubbard named ‘Student of Month’ MASON CITY — Lindsey Hubbard, a senior at Mason City High School, was selected as the Mason City Noon Rotary Club “Student of the Month” for January. She is the daughter of Steve and Lori HubHubbard bard. She has two sisters, two dogs and a cat. Hubbard has worked at the YMCA for four years, as a lifeguard and certified swimming lesson instructor. Hubbard is in the National Honor Society and is on the Trap Shooting Team. She has been on the Honor Roll and Principal’s List each

school year. She was also recognized in Who’s Who Among American High School Students. She also received an Excellence in Academic Achievement Award by the Iowa High School Music Association and two Mohawk Letters for Academics in 2008 and 2009. Her community involvement includes being an active and confirmed member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She has participated in the Salvation Army bell ringing and Community Kitchen. She has also volunteered at the YMCA. Hubbard plans to attend the University of Minnesota, Rochester, to earn her bachelor of science degree in health sciences. After that she plans to transfer to another school, to earn her master’s degree to become a physician assistant.

University of Oxford position MASON CITY — Brian J. Smith, Ph.D, son-in-law of John and Marcy Colvin, of Mason City, has accepted a tenured-track faculty position in physics at the prestigious University of Oxford in England. Smith works in the field of experimental quantum optics. He has been working at Oxford as a postdoctoral research fellow since 2007, with funding from the Royal Society and the National University of Singapore. Upon taking up his new post midApril, Brian will become an assistant professor for the University and a

Fellow of Keble College. Smith is married to Kelly Colvin, a 1996 Mason City High School graduate and 2000 Gustavus Adolphus College graduate. Colvin works in the University of Oxford Said Business School as the alumni programmes manager. Smith graduated from Two Harbors High School, Two Harbors, Minn., in 1996, received his B.A. degree with honors from Gustavus Adolphus College as a double major (physics and math) in 2000, and was awarded his Ph.D in physics from the University of Oregon in 2007.
