CELEBRATIONS Congratulations

to Wisconsin for this legendary race. Over 10,000 skiers participated in last weekend’s extravaganza. The race is now in its 37th year. My Pa, the Honorable GK Bovard, completed several Birke’s, the last one about 10 years ago. During that race he broke one of his poles and finished with an oak branch that more closely approximated a cudgel. No one got in his way and he was able to keep the local wolf pack at bay.

2010 American Birkebeiner Team Exos Motley Crew congratulates the Mason City Birkebeiner skiers!

Congratulations to Mason City High School Mohawk Cheerleaders All-State Squad

Front row: Paul Anderson MD (Anchorage), Rebecca Zadroga MD (Costa Rica), Mike Beiergrohslen PhD, Kristofer Rhude (Madison), Tom Rhude (Madison). Note: Kris Rhude, Twito and Zadroga won the Korteloppet team trophy for Team Exos. I wanted to commend your continget of xc skiers from Mason City who participated in the American Birkebeiner 50 kilometer or Korteloppet 23 km races. This is an epic event of great pagaentry. Skiers from 47 of the 50 states in the union and virtually all of the competitive European and Scandahoovian skiing nations make the pilgrimage

On behalf of the family of Weldon F. Sult, Marble Rock, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all friends and neighbors for your sympathy and acts of kindness through words of comfort, prayers, food, calls, cards and charitable donations. We would also like to thank the hospice staff who cared for Weldon in his final days. He will certainly be missed by his family and the community of Marble Rock.

I especially want to congratulate Joel Yunek who beat me by a good half a minute. Since moving north to Minnesota after college, I have done 17 Birkes and three Korteloppet races and ski upwards of 100 kms. per week during the winter and have access to lots of hills here. Other than the fact that Cerro Gordo means “fat hill,” as a native son, I know for a fact that there is little in the way of alpine terrain for hill training on the windswept northern Iowegian plains. Kudos to Dwight Beavers for finishing in 2nd place in his age group. This is an amazing accomplishment for a flatlander competing against hill climbers from the Chequomengon Northwoods, the Rockies and Norway. Gentlemen, I am sorry I stumbled off in a fit of oxygen deprivation and didn’t get to chat, hoist a tumbler of Aquavit and shake your hands. My stocking cap is off to all of you! Skol! Ralph S.
