U of I Presidental Scholar IOWA CITY — Tanzeh Khan, of Clear Lake, was named a University of Iowa Presidential Scholar for 2010. The scholarship award, Khan will receive, is valued at $13,000 a year ($52,000 over four years). Khan was one of 41 seniors, selected from a field of more than 1,000 applicants. Selection was based on academic excellence, leadership, involvement and service.

Mason City High School’s Concert Chamber Choir member, Michael Betz, was recognized in two of the five centers for his marimba solo, receiving the Iowa High School Music Association “Outstanding Performance Award.” Only 0.9 of 1 percent of all festival entries in the state receive this award.

CLEAR LAKE — A retirement open house for Bob Powell, Clear Lake water superintendent, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 30, at the City of Clear Lake’s Community Center, 15 N. 6th St., Clear Lake. Powell will retire April 30, after nearly 33 years of service. Powell began his duties with the city of Clear Lake in July, 1977. He was named water superintendent in 1991, following the retirement of Lloyd Kennedy. Powell is a native of Charles City, and moved to Clear Lake in 1967, and worked for Bob “Peanuts” Jacobson’s Barber Shop. In July, 1969, Powell and his family moved to northern California, where he worked in a sawmill,
worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and owned his own barbershop. After eight years of living in California, the Powells moved back to Clear Lake. On July 11, 1977, Powell went to work for the city of Clear Lake, in the water department. Powell and his wife, Sandra have two grown children, Wendy (Steve) Watson, Clear Lake, and Wade (Lonna) Powell, Shakopee, Minn. They have four granddaughters, Whitney Jo and Kelsey Watson and Maia and Morgan Powell.

Bruce is a 1993 graduate from Linn-Marr High School, a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a BA degree and a graduate of Hawaii Pacific University, MA: Diplomacy and Military Studies. Bruce works as a military/political analyst for a private firm in Honolulu. The couple will be married at 2 p.m. June 12, 2010, at the Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids.
