Robert D. Blue scholarship awards DES MOINES — The Iowa Centennial Memorial Foundation announced that Tia McInroy, of Charles City, and Ellen Majewski, of Greene, are among 10 students to receive a Robert D. Blue scholarship award for the 2010-11 school year. The Foundation honored the winners at a ceremony in Des Moines. The Robert D. Blue Scholarship, which is given by the Foundation, awarded $1,000 to ten Iowa students to assist in covering expenses at an Iowa college. McInroy plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa. Majewski plans to attend Des Moines University.

Nauman graduated from Rockford Senior High School in May, 2009, and is attending North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City, in the climate control program. MILITARY NOTES First Lt. Alex Leu received a Third Infantry Division General’s Coin from Brigadier General Patrick Donahue II, the deputy commanding general for maneuver, for the Third Infantry Division. The coin was presented due to Leu’s work establishing a memorial event for 69 military and civilian law enforcement personnel, who have died in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since 2003. The event was held during the 2010 National Police Memorial Week, May 10, on Contingency Operating Base Speicher in northern Iraq, with over 200 people in attendance. For his efforts, First Lt. Leu also received a General’s Coin from Major General Nelson Cannon, United States Forces — Iraq Deputy Commanding General of Detainee Operations, Provost Marshall General. The 317th Military Police Battalion awarded First Lt. Leu with an Army Achievement Medal. First Lt. Leu was mobilized with the 317th Military Police Battalion of Tampa, Fla., due to the needs of the United States Army in April of 2009. He previously served and will return to the 348th Military Police Company United States Army Reserve in Ames, upon his re-deployment. Leu is the chief of police in the city of Fonda, and plans to return to work

this summer. His father, Monty, and stepmother, Patty, live near Ayrshire, Iowa. His mother, Marcia, lives in Laurens. His children, Elizabeth, 8, and Anastasia, 5, live in Mason City, while his daughter Abigail, 1, lives in Fonda. Air Force Airman Erik J. Perthel, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Lisa Wagner, of Osage, and Steve Perthel, of St. Ansgar. Air National Guard Airman Anthony P. Maskarina graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Amy Maskarina, of Mason City. He is a 2005 graduate of Mason City High School and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, in 2009. Navy Seaman Recruit Jon C. Donnelly recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Kathy and Craig Donnelly, of Hampton, and is a 2008 graduate of HamptonDumont High School. Army Pvt. Wesley M. Giegerich and Army National Guard Spec. Holly M. Buffington graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. Giegerich is the son of Vicki Davis, of Brook Park, Minn., and Gary

Giegerich, of Dumont. He is a 2009 graduate of Mora High School in Minnesota. Buffington is a 2009 graduate of Lake Mills High School and is the daughter of Nancy Buffington, Forest City. Army National Guard Pvt. Eric J. Miller graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2003 graduate of Algona High School, and is the son of Joyce Lenz, of Algona.
