MASON CITY — Alex and Andi Kaufman, seniors at Mason City High School, have been selected as the Mason City Noon Rotary Club’s “Students of the Month” for November. They are the daughters of Lynn and Mary Kaufman. Alex Kaufman has been a Mohawk cheerleader for four years, a Mohawk Dancer for three years, and has been chosen as an AllState Cheerleader and AllAlex Kaufman American Dancer. She is also a member of the tennis team which she has been involved with for four years, and received the MVP award. She is a varsity letter winner in all of the sports she has participated in. Her other school involvements include, Student Senate, Best Buddies, and Yield. She is also very active in the vocal music department where she has been a member of the Concert Choir, Chorale, Chamber Choir, and Madrigals. She was also recently selected as a member of the 2010 Iowa All-State Choir. MILITARY NOTES Pvt. Matthew David Moyer, 19, of Winona, Minn., graduated from United States Marine Corps boot camp Oct. 15, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Calif. Pvt. Moyer successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD, San Diego as one of 83 recruits in Training Platoon 2107. While in basic training Pvt. Moyer received the expert badge during rifle qualification. Following 10 days home on leave he will report to Camp Pendleton for one month of military combat training, and then will leave for his Military Occupation Specialty School. Moyer is the son of Andy and Linda (Wilkinson) Waldo and David Moyer, formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa. Capt. Jeffrey J. Vaske was promoted to his present rank in the U.S. Army. In addition, Capt. Vaske was decorated with the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service while assigned to Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. Vaske, a public health nurse, is assigned to the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC), Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. Benttine graduated from basic military training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla., under the Split-option Enlistment Program to serve as a member of the Army National Guard or Reserve. The program allows students between their junior and senior year of high school to attend basic training during the summer after their junior year. After completing basic training, the recruits will attend National Guard or Reserve weekend drills while still in school. The summer following graduation, the guardsmen or reservists attend advanced individual training in the career specialty they selected at the time they enlisted. Benttine is the son of Carl and Stephanie Benttine, of St. Ansgar, and is a student at St. Ansgar High School.

Riverland scholarships DMACC scholarship AUSTIN, Minn. — The Riverland Community College Foundation distributed more than $64,000 in scholarships to students for the 2010 fall semester. Funding for scholarships comes from both the Foundation Scholarship Fund and from designated scholarship funds from area businesses and community sponsors. WATSEKA, Ill. — Brian and Sarah Chaney, of Watseka, Ill., are parents of a son, Caleb Brian Chaney, born at 8:57 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2010 at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee, Ill. He weighed 7 lbs., 9 oz., and was 20 inches long. Grandparents are Gary and Sue Swartwood, Mason City, Iowa, and Mike and Donna Chaney, Watseka, Ill.
