I would like to thank the Newman Catholic School Development Department and the entire Newman community for honoring me on my retirement, as transportation director, at the annual God’s Portion Day event held Sunday, Nov. 7. This is truly an amazing event in which thousands of dollars are raised per hour in many creative ways to benefit the future education of the students. One of the unique items donated for the live auction was a solid oak school bus, hand-crafted by Bob Ballantyne. Forty generous contributors totaled $2,475 for the school in my honor and then the “masterpiece” was presented to me as a
gift. Being a part of the Newman ‘family’ and transporting the students to and from school and to numerous activities and sporting events, has been an awesome experience that I will continue doing on a part-time basis. — Lorris Long Semi-retired school bus driver, Mason City

THANK YOU
Thank you The Newman Marathon committee would like to thank our countless volunteers who helped make the Newman marathon, half-marathon and 5/10k races a success. Volunteers offered their services for traffic control, running guidance, spaghetti supper and finish line activities. Also, thank you for all the support from the professionals in our community. Our thanks, appreciation and congratulation also goes out to our runners! For this event, we had 128 runners for the full marathon, 96 runners for the half marathon and a total of 148 runners for either the 5 or 10k races. Of these, over 120 were from out of state, some coming as far as California, Oregon, Connecticut,
Pennsylvania, Florida and New York! In state, we had over 140 runners that were outside our Mason City/Clear Lake community. This participation not only helps our school but our community as well with tourism dollars. — Gary Schmit Race Director for the Newman Marathon

The Spirit Of Christmas Cheer Fund “God bless the Cheer Fund,” one donor wrote in a note that came along with their donation. “You bring happiness to so many needy people.” Letter writer is happy to give
Since 1927 we have received thousands of letters similar to the ones above, which continue to reinforce the importance and true meaning of the Christmas Cheer Fund. Letters from children, adults and letters received anonymously, all asking for a little support during the holiday season.
The 2010 Cheer Fund goal is $110,000. “ These people are not asking for elaborate gifts. They just want a little extra money to help buy food and other necessities,” said Globe-Gazette Publisher Howard Query. “This Fund is one way people can spread holiday joy.”
In 1927 Lee Loomis, publisher of the Globe-Gazette founded the Christmas Cheer Fund, and each year thereafter it has continued to help brighten the holidays for many North Iowa residents due to your generosity. Every donation counts. Regardless of the size of your gift, anything will be greatly appreciated. Cheer Fund donations or referrals may be made to: Christmas Cheer Fund, Globe-Gazette, P.O. Box 271, Mason City, IA 504020271. Donations may also be taken to the Globe-Gazette office, 300 North Washington Ave., Mason City, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cheer Fund requests may also be made at the Globe-Gazette office. Look for your Cheer Fund envelope in tomorrow’s paper.
