The Spirit Of Christmas Cheer Fund “God bless the Cheer Fund,” one donor wrote in a note that came along with their donation. “You bring happiness to so many needy people.” Letter writer is happy to give
Since 1927 we have received thousands of letters similar to the ones above, which continue to reinforce the importance and true meaning of the Christmas Cheer Fund. Letters from children, adults and letters received anonymously, all asking for a little support during the holiday season.
The 2010 Cheer Fund goal is $110,000. “ These people are not asking for elaborate gifts. They just want a little extra money to help buy food and other necessities,” said Globe-Gazette Publisher Howard Query. “This Fund is one way people can spread holiday joy.”
In 1927 Lee Loomis, publisher of the Globe-Gazette founded the Christmas Cheer Fund, and each year thereafter it has continued to help brighten the holidays for many North Iowa residents due to your generosity. In the past 84 years you have given $2,127,298.03 to help North Iowans in need of a little cheer for the holidays. Every donation counts. Regardless of the size of your gift, anything will be greatly appreciated. Cheer Fund donations or referrals may be made to: Christmas Cheer Fund, Globe-Gazette, P.O. Box 271, Mason City, IA 50402-0271. Donations may also be taken to the Globe-Gazette office, 300 North Washington Ave., Mason City, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Wartburg recognition WAVERLY — Kristin Huinker, of Garner, was among three students recognized at Wartburg College for her commitment to service, during St. Elizabeth Week, Nov. 14-21. Huinker, a social work major, has been involved in service to the college and community. She has participated in and led service trips and worked with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, the United Way, and the Holiday Shoppe project, organized by the Wartburg Social Club for low-income residents of Bremer County. She is the daughter of
Daniel and Shawn Huinker. St. Elizabeth Week honors Elizabeth of Hungary, who lived at Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, Germany, during the 13th century. The wife of a Thuringian landgrave, she carried on an active ministry to the poor and sick during her years at the castle. After her husband’s death, she became Germany’s first female Franciscan nun and was canonized in 1235.
