AMES — Iowa State University student Raeann Shimak, of Mason City, will be among 25 ISU undergraduates who present their research to legislators and others, during the sixth annual “Research in the Capitol” Tuesday, March 22, in the rotunda of the State Capitol building in Des Moines. Shimak, who majors in biochemistry and genetics, will present “Analysis of Available Diagnostic Tests for Optimized Detection of Visceral Leishmania Infantum Infection in Canines.” Her research mentor is Christine Petersen, assistant professor of veterinary pathology More than 60 undergraduate students from Iowa’s three Regent universities (Iowa State, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa) will display their research posters and describe their projects. The event highlights the importance of research to the undergraduate learning experience. Gov. Terry Branstad will present opening remarks.
Iowa Beef Expo results DES MOINES — The 35th annual Iowa Beef Expo was held Feb. 13-20 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. There were five breed sales that had an $8,000 or higher top selling bull, and six breed sales that had a $6,000 or higher top selling female. MILITARY NOTES Dr. Eric Wagner D.D.S. was honored March 3, 2011, while attending the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Army Dental Corps, and was one of seven new members inducted into the Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3). Membership in the order denotes distin-
guished service which is recognized by the senior leadership of the Army Medical Department (AMEDD). Members are given a certificate and a medallion. Dr. Wagner is a colonel and serves in the U.S. Army Reserve as the chief of staff and deputy commander for the 75-member unit of dental officers that are
attached to the U.S. Army Dental Command, which is part of the AMEDD. He performs various administrative duties throughout the year that keep him in contact with the unit members, which are spread throughout the country. He has been associated with the Army since 1983, first in active duty and since 1987 in the Army Reserve.
Dr. Wagner maintains a dental practice with offices in Hampton and Sheffield. Army Reserve Pvt. Joshua J. Trettin graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Trettin earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Linda Trettin, of Strawberry Point, and Roger Trettin, of Rockford.
