Clover Kids display 53 projects OSAGE — On Wednesday, July 29, 53 Mitchell County Clover Kid members brought their exhibits for conference judging and display in the 4-H building. Judges were Rick Sletten, Audrey Christensen, and Brenda Johanns. Clover Kids is a program for kindergarten through third grade students in Mitchell County to learn about 4-H and develop their interest in the program. 11 win blue ribbons in Personal Development OSAGE — Personal Development projects were judged on Tuesday, July 28. Projects in the Personal Development department include Citizenship, Communication, Leadership, and Self-Determined. Personal Development and 4-H Poster projects were judged by Val Plagge from Latimer. Blue ribbon winners were: Samie Brandau, Katelynn Huebsch, Darin Koch, Katelynn Mostek, Makayla Mostek, Julia Ringhofer, Alexa Thyer, and Haley Walters, Osage; Hannah Cross and Clint Eastman, Riceville; Abigail Kulow, Stacyville.

State trips earned in Communications OSAGE — 4-H Educational Presentations and Working Exhibits were presented on Saturday, Aug. 1, in the 4-H Building on the fairgrounds. Becky Meyer, Charles City, judged the 4-H’ers on Thursday, July 9. Four Working Exhibits were chosen to advance to the Iowa State Fair: Corin Johanns and Sammi Scharper, Osage, Paper Pinwheels; Laura Miller and Kayla Uthe, Osage, Papel Picado; Julia Klaes, Riceville, and Kaylee Klaes, Osage, Rumba Shakers; and Julia Ringhofer, Osage, and Paige Smith, Stacyville, Origami Tea Cups. OSAGE — Fair-goers were entertained on Friday evening, July 31, by 4-H members at the annual Share-The-Fun event. Becky Meyer and Elaine Poppinga, both of Charles City, judged the 4-H’ers. The Mitchell County 4-H County Council performed a dance to “Up Town Funk” led by Julia Ringhofer and Bethany Meitner to open the show. The following acts will go on to State Fair: Abbie Miller, Osage High Towers, “The Greatest Love of All,” Vocal; Erin Miller, West Cedar Sunbeams, “Skinny Love,” Vocal; Victoria Schwarting, Osage Warhawks, “Fight Song,” Vocal. OSAGE — Abbie Miller of Osage was named the 2015 Mitchell County 4-H Fashion Revue purple winner. She also has the opportunity to represent Mitchell County at the Iowa State Fair. In the $15 Clothing Challenge, Outstanding Intermediate was Sammi Scharper of Osage and Lauren Bork of St. Ansgar received Outstanding Junior. Blue ribbon winners in $15 Challenge were Rayven Young of Osage and Sophia Merten of Stacyville. In the Clothing Selection, Rayven Young was named the Outstanding Junior. OSAGE — On Friday, July 31, the 4-H Mitchell County Council held its 2015-2016 member installation ceremony in the 4-H Exhibit Building. The mission of 4-H is to help youth become contributing members of society. The 4-H County Council is looked at for leadership – setting an example for others. 4-H County Council members are expected to be a living example of 4-H standards for other members and friends of 4-H. Top Market Beef is shown by Kylie Juenger OSAGE — Kylie Juenger of St. Ansgar exhibited the Grand Champion Market Beef at the 2015 Mitchell County Beef show. Kara Miller of Osage exhibited the Reserve Champion Market Animal. The Grand Champion was a 1,235 pound market steer. The Reserve Champion Market beef animal was a 1,375 pound market steer. The Champion and Reserve Champion Market Beef trophies were provided by Farmers Feed and Grain. The Champion Market Heifer was exhibited by Kaleb Jakel of Osage. This trophy was provided by Tim and Joe Johnson. The Reserve Champion Market Heifer was exhibited by Darin Koch of Osage. Ty Bayer, Ringle, Wis., was the official judge of the Market Beef Show. A total of 36 steers, dairy beef, and market heifers were entered in the competition this year. Third place Overall Market Animal was shown by Chris Eastman of Riceville. Fourth place Overall Market Animal was shown by Kyle Jakel of Osage. Fifth place Overall Market Animal was shown by Kaleb Jakel. Showmanship winners in the market

Beef Show were: Senior Champion — Roni Kruse of Rudd. Reserve Senior Champion — Jacob Metli of Mason City Intermediate Champion — Jadie Popp of Osage. The Champion Showmanship awards were provided by Weis Cattle Co., Main Realty/Clarence Kruse, and VitaFerm/ Mike Wadle. Reserve Showmanship awards were provided by Kruse Angus Farms and the Mitchell County Bankers. Five pens of market beef animals were exhibited this year. OSAGE — The top rate of gain in the Market Beef Show was 4.285 pounds per day exhibited by, Derek Fox of Osage. There were 36 entries in the show this year. The rate of gain is based on a feeding period beginning at weigh-in, Dec. 18, 2014, and ending on entry day of the county fair. Purple ribbons were awarded to other beef entries for having a rate of gain equal to or exceeding 3.25 pounds per day. “Top Ten” Rate of Gain Market Beef exhibitors were presented in a special show before the judging. Kruse exhibits Supreme Champion Breeding Heifer OSAGE — Roni Kruse of Rudd exhibited the Supreme Champion Breeding Heifer at the 2015 Mitchell County 4-H/FFA Beef show held on July 31. Tim and Joe Johnson provided this trophy. The Reserve Champion Breeding Heifer was shown by Amber Brigham of St. Ansgar. Third place overall was Ralee Kruse of Rudd, fourth place was Zach Adams of Osage, and fifth place was Kylie Juenger of St. Ansgar. There were 48 breeding heifers entered in this year’s show. The Champion Purebred Shorthorn Heifer was shown by Shelby Blake of Osage and the Reserve Champion Purebred Shorthorn Heifer was shown by Lucas Weigle of Orchard. The trophy this year was provided by Berg’s Stock and Grain Farm. The Champion Shorthorn Plus Heifer was shown by Courtney Prohaska of Orchard and the Reserve Champion Shorthorn Plus Heifer was shown by Savanah Rogers of Orchard. The Champion Simmental Heifer was shown by Madalyn Dohlman of Chester and the Reserve Champion Simmental Heifer was shown by Taylor Dohlman of Chester. Brigham wins Feeder Calf Division title OSAGE — New this year was a Feeder Calf Division in the 2015 Mitchell County Beef Show. Parker Brigham of St. Ansgar exhibited the Grand Champion Prospect Steer. Trystan Dohlman of Chester exhibited the Reserve Champion Prospect Steer. The Champion and Reserve Champion Market Beef trophies were provided by Farmers Feed and Grain. The Champion Prospect Heifer was exhibited by

Colin Muller of Osage. The Reserve Champion Prospect Heifer was exhibited by Nick Chambers of Osage. The Champion and Reserve Champion Prospect Heifer trophies were donated Farmers State Bank of St. Ansgar. Ty Bayer, Ringle, Wis., was the official judge of the Market Beef Show. A total of 11 steers and eight heifers were entered in the competition this year.

OSAGE — The 4-H Dog Show at the Mitchell County Fair was held on Saturday, Aug. 1. Overall Best in Show was won by Sammi Scharper, Osage, and her dog, Mac. Junior Best Handler was won by Claudia Aschenbrenner, Osage, and her dog, Sadie. Winner of the timed agility course was Sammi Scharper and her dog, Mac, with a course time of 24.49 seconds. Claudia Aschenbrenner, and her dog, Sadie, placed second in the timed agility course with a time of 30.54 seconds. Blue ribbon winners were: Destini Blake, Isaac Brumm, Shelly Brumm, Brooklyn Halbach, Leo Klapperich, Bethany Meier, Josiah Meier, Gabe Mueller, Andrew Thyer, and Victoria Schwarting, all of Osage. Members were judged by Kathy Johnson, Rockford. Jack Steiert is the dog project leader, and Britt Pearson assisted. They have held workouts for the members and their dogs the past few weeks.

Heimer wins Sheep Show Rate of Gain OSAGE — The top rate of gain in the Sheep Show was .90 pounds per day exhibited by Grace Heimer, of St. Ansgar. The rate of gain is based on a feeding period beginning at weigh-in on May 9, 2015 and ending on entry day of the county fair. Emmi Taets shows grand champion hog OSAGE — Twenty-four 4-H and FFA members entered 97 market hogs in the 2015 Mitchell County Junior Swine show. Entries in the carcass division 24 Derby Barrows and 18 Derby Gilts. The official placings were made by judge Sheldon Johnson, Jackson, Minn. Major emphasis of the educational event was on production information provided by the average daily gain of the exhibitor’s entry. OSAGE — Niklas Smith, Osage, exhibited the Champion Derby Gilt on scanned data at the Mitchell County Junior Show. The placing was based upon “lean gain per day” determined by carcass cutout data. There were a total of 18 gilts entered in the 2015 Derby Gilt Show. Ultrasound was used to measure carcass characteristics. Niklas Smith’s champion gilt had an average daily gain (ADG) of 2.17 lbs. per day of feed and scanned a backfat thickness (BFT) of .79 inches, loin muscle area (LMA) of 9.47 square inches, and a Lean Gain/Day (LGD) of 0.9652 pounds. Addy Witt, Osage, showed the Champion Derby Gilt Live. The Champion Derby Gilt trophies were given by Northern Country Co-op. Connor Mehmen, Osage, exhibited the Reserve Champion Derby Gilt on scanned data. Niklas Smith, Osage, showed the Reserve Champion Derby Gilt Live.

Dairy trophies awarded at the County Fair OSAGE — Fourteen exhibitors brought 17 dairy heifers and dairy goats to the Mitchell County Fair. The Dairy Show was judged by Scott Ellinghuysen of Altura, Minn. Aaron Gerdts, St. Ansgar, received a purple ribbon for the Champion three-year-old Holstein. The Champion trophy was provided by Praire State/ Select Sires. Cassie Braun, Aaron Gerdts, Erik Gerdts, all of St. Ansgar; Caleb Brumm, Madeline Brumm, Nathan Brumm, Devan Hackenmiller, Josh Krebsbach, all of Stacyville; Noah Michels and Rayven Young of Osage, received blue ribbons. Champion Senior Dairy Showman was Madeline Brumm. Josh Krebsbach was Reserve Champion Senior Dairy Showman. Champion Junior Dairy Showman was Rayven Young. Cassie Braun was Reserve Champion Junior Dairy Showman. The Champion Showman trophy was provided by Carlson Wholesale and Meitner Dairy. Champion Goat Showman was Garrison Gerdts, Osage and Reserve Champion Showman was Chloe Goodale, Osage. Garrison Gerdts exhibited the Champion Dairy Goat. The Champion Dairy Goat trophy was provided by the Osage Co-op Elevator. In addition, Garrison Gerdts, Chloe Goodale, Osage; Alexia Retterath, Makayla Retterath, Stacyville, received a blue ribbon.
