Team offers talent DEB NICKLAY

Of The Press-News

OSAGE — Osage softball will have a new coach this year, but her face is familiar nonetheless. Jessica Spada takes over the head coaching duties from Jodi Demuth, who resigned the post after last season. However, Spada knows the girls well, having spent four years as an assistant coach. Jessica Rogers is the new assistant. The Green Devils are coming off a sterling season, having gone 13-1 last season, falling only in a heartbreaker loss in the Class 3A regional final. The team also lost to key players – All-State, first-team pitcher Cassidy

Mohl and third-team pick, catcher Chandler Banta. But Spada is putting a lot of faith in some equally talented returners: senior leftfielder, Zoey Thompson; senior center fielder Jamie Jacobs; and senior right fielder Amber Schwarting; and junior first baseman Kayla Tubbs; junior second baseman, Hannah Huebsch; and junior short stop Destiny Thompson. The girls were scheduled to open their season yesterday against St. Ansgar at home; they will also face Forest City tonight in away action before returning home to host Riceville at home on Thursday; and Bishop Garrigan at home on Friday. On June 1, they will head to West Hancock.

Consistency to be key for Saints JIM CROSS

Of The Press-News

ST. ANSGAR — Being able to play fundamental and consistent baseball will be the key to the St. Ansgar Saints baseball team having a successful year. With most of the pitching staff and defensive starters returning, head coach Devin Schwiesow is looking for these areas to be the strength of his team. Returning letters winners for the Saints are seniors Jared Kramer and Bobby Patterson, and juniors Jacob Hyde, Colin

Salz and Sam Steele. “We have had great leadership out of our captains in the off-season,” said Schwiesow. “We hope that their leadership and the work ethic of the younger athletes will pay off this summer. “The Corn Bowl Conference will be incredibly balanced. The conference championship could go to a number of different teams.” The Saints finished the season with an overall record of 13-20 and a third place finish in the conference with a record of 10-4.
