Forest City boys plan on competing for conference supremacy again

OREST CITY — The Forest F City boys basketball team has made it nearly a yearly tradition to compete for a conference title. It didn’t matter if it was back in the North Iowa Conference days or in the Top of Iowa Conference’s West Division, where the Indians currently reside. Forest City did that last season,

racing to a 12-4 conference mark and an overall record of 15-7. On a team loaded with underclassmen, the Indians are once against expecting to be in the upper echelon of league play. “Going to be a fairly young team,” Forest City coach Dan Rosacker said. “Have experienced players back who are athletic.”

That athleticism revolves around five returning letterwinners, four of whom juniors. Sam Snyder, Ryan Theel, Chris Jermeland and Grady Hovenga all had experience as sophomores, and Ben Midtgaard, a senior, provides experience in the backcourt. game last season and led the team in rebounding at 7.4 per game. Rosacker said his team’s main quest in the early going will be to develop depth. “We have some good inexperienced players ready to fit those roles, but it will be a matter of getting them game experience early,” the coach said.

RITT — Last year’s version of B the West Hancock boys basketball team proved to be historic in more ways than one. The Eagles qualified for their first state tournament since 1930, where they scored a third-place finish, and had two guys in Connor Sonius and Nate Paulus finish as two of the best players to ever
put on a West Hancock uniform. But a new year brings new challenges, and at the top of the list is finding a way to build on what they did without Sonius and Paulus. “I think that our guys are motivated to go back to ‘The Well,’” West Hancock senior guard Dylan Eckels said. “We’re motivated, we’ve been working all summer and we feel like we have something to prove this year.”

The Eagles firmly believe they have the pieces to do just that. Eckels is the top returning scorer after averaging 12.8 points per game as a junior, and 6-foot-7 senior forward Seth Weiland is a handful in the paint on defense and can shoot the ball with the best of them on offense. Weiland finished his junior season with 126 blocks while averaging 9.4 points per game.

Anderson, Dillavou bring back scoring punch for Indians OREST CITY — As sophF omores, Forest City’s Hannah Anderson and Brea Dillavou showed the ability to score in bunches. Expect more of the same this year. Coach Dusty Meyn has proving scorers at his disposal with Anderson, who scored 12.6 points per game last year, and Dillavou, who tallied 11.3 per contest. Those two, however, are not alone in having varsity experience. Anna Anderson, Josilin Dillavou and Callie McQuown each found playing time last season. The Indians finished 15-7 overall with Anderson and Brea Dillavou garnering second-team all-conference honors. “We bring back a core group of girls from last year’s team,” said Meyn, who is in his eighth season. “We will be looking to build off that experience and get better every day. “The sophomore group of

RITT — Fresh off of splitB ting the Top of Iowa Conference West Division title last season, the West Hancock girls basketball team is ready to chase another this year. With a mix of young and experienced talent, the Eagles have high hopes of building back toward that to be in the mix by season’s end. “If we play the way we should and play the way we can, we definitely can be there,” West Hancock senior Faith Hammer said. Early on, as Hammer and coach Paul Sonius said, it will be about getting this team to gel. Hammer returns as the leading scoring after averaging 13 points per game last year. After her, it was Kelly Leerar, who also averaged double figures (10.7) and then Brigid Smith (2.3). With a wealth of underclassmen, including four freshmen who Sonius said will see minutes, it’s going to be something

Forest City looks for new faces to step up FOREST CITY — Some of the firepower is gone. That means there is new opportunity for those on the Forest City wrestling team. Alex Paulson, a two-time state medalist, and Pierce Gelhaus, a
state medalist as a senior, are gone after leading last year’s team. Who’s next in line to carry the mantle as successful Forest City grapplers? There are many options.
Alec Fett won 25 matches as a sophomore. Zach Wagner (16) and Blake Jacobs (18) also found wins early in their careers. Maverick Freerksen was a 21-match winners, and Noah Paul-
son, now a senior, was 25-20. Aside from being the lone state representatives, Alex Paulson and Gelhaus were the only wrestlers on the roster to reach the district tournament.

Backed by return of 3 state qualifiers, West Hancock wrestlers ready to go BRITT — The West Hancock wrestling team is a program on the rise in the state. With a young roster last year, the Eagles enjoyed a solid season, ultimately sending three wrestlers to the state tournament. This season, there’s plenty of reason to be optimistic as the entire roster returns. The Eagles are hoping that translates into more wins on the mat. Junior Colton Francis is the
Eagles’ top returner after placing sixth at 195 pounds in the Class 1A state tournament in February. Senior Jordan Weiland gave the Eagles two place winners as he took eighth at 170 pounds. Junior Hunter Hagen is also coming off his first trip to the state tournament. “The ceiling is what they want it to be,” West Hancock coach Mark Sanger said after the state tournament. “It’s what they want
to do in the offseason and the time they want to put in on their own. They can be wherever they want to be, in my opinion. “They are going to be as good as anyone coming down here.” Francis finished the year with a 44-9 record, Hagen was 41-5 and Weiland was 38-15. Francis and Hagen each scored runner-up finishes in their respective weights in the Top of Iowa Conference tournament.
Senior Nick Lemmon was another West Hancock wrestler who enjoyed a good season, finishing with a 33-16 record. Bennett Bruns turned out a 2919 campaign, Cameron Clark was 20-18 and J.J. Holland, Dalton Subject and Jordi Rodriguez each put forth 17 wins or better. West Hancock opens its season Thursday, Dec. 1, in a triangular at Eagle Grove.
