OSAGE — Green Devils head baseball coach Mark Mohl said he sees success coming from his pitchers and experienced players. “I am excited about the upcoming year,” said Mohl, in his 23rd year as head coach. “We have good pitching depth and experienced players.” Returning letter winners include seniors Caleb Bushbaum, Trevor Olson and Tyler Mork; juniors Ben Grimm, Kyle Berge, Jacob Wihlm, Garrett Maakestad, Ben Huftalin and Noah Krabbe; and sophomores Hunter Wagner and Isaac Oberfell. The Green Devils were 1020 last season, the final year of the North Iowa Conference. Osage is entering its first year in the Top of Iowa Conference – East Division. Mohl sees the top three teams of the new conference being Mason City Newman Catholic, St. Ansgar and Central Springs. The Green Devils open their season on the road at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 23, at JIM CROSS, PRESS-NEWS Newman Catholic. Their first home game is at 7:30 p.m. The 2016 Osage Green Devils Baseball Team. OSAGE — The Osage Green Devils softball team is returning its entire infield for the upcoming season, a key to success seen by first-year head coach Kevin Isaacson. “Our infield will be an experienced group with strong leadership,” he said. “We’ll have to replace all three outfield spots, but we have a lot of young, talented players who we feel will step up to the challenge.” Returning letter winners for Isaacson include seniors Hannah Huebsch, Destiny Thompson and Kayla Tubbs; juniors Autumn O’Malley and Joslyn Perrin; and sophomore Gabby Schwarting. The Green Devils ended their final year in the North Iowa Conference with a record of 18-9. Isaacson said he sees the top three teams in the Top of Iowa Conference – East Division to be Central Springs, Osage and North Butler. He also predicted the overall top three teams to be North Union, Central Springs and Osage. RICEVILLE — With the Riceville Wildcats baseball team starting a new season, a new conference is an adventure head coach Bryce Conway is excited to start. The Wildcats finished the 2014-2015 year with a record of 20-12, finishing fourth in the Corn Bowl Conference. This year, Riceville is in its first year as a member of the Iowa Star Conference. Returning letter winners for Riceville include seniors Logan Mayer and Dalton Reddel; juniors Tylar Christensen, Ben Swancutt, Cole Holmen, Tommy Bauer and Kyler
Bauer; and sophomores John Miller, Grant Shedenhelm and Kaleb Tweite. “We have many players returning with experience,” said Conway, “but need players to step up and fill leadership roles. If our returning players can be collectively better offensively and defensively than last year, we will be competitive.” Conway, coaching his 14th year at Riceville, said he sees the top three standout teams in the conference to be Don Bosco, Janesville and North Tama. The Wildcats open their season at home beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, May 23, against the CAL Cadets.

RICEVILLE — The Riceville Wildcats softball team is looking for a great season in the first year of being a member of the Iowa Star Conference. Returning for the Wildcats are senior Savannah Asfahl; juniors Susie Irvin, Brooke Hobson, Ashley Hobson and Marisa Tetzner; sophomores Olivia Howe, Savannah Sullivan and Jillian Keeling; and freshmen Abby Marr, Aby Adams and Debra Lane. “The pitchers and catchers have spent countless hours this off-season getting ready for this season,”
said coach Andrea Bauer. “They are physically and mentally ready to sit behind the plate and throw off the mound.” The Wildcats finished last season with a record of 3-19 in the Corn Bowl Conference. Bauer said with being in the Iowa Star Conference for the first time, “I really have no idea who the top teams will be.” Riceville is coached by Bauer, in her sixth year, and Amanda Conway, five years. The Wildcats open their season at home at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 23, against the CAL Cadets.

ST. ANSGAR — Being able to play fundamental and consistent baseball will be the keys to the St. Ansgar Saints baseball team’s success this season. With most of the pitching staff and defensive starters returning, head coach Devin Schwiesow is looking for these areas to be the strengths of his team. “We will need to improve offensively to win big games,” he said. Returning letter winners for the Saints include seniors, Jacob Hyde, Colin Salz, Sam Steele, Ethan Mayer and Logan Zipse, and juniors, Jared Mayer, Ben Boerjan and Cole Willert.
“We have had great leadership out of our captains in the off-season,” said Schwiesow. “We hope their leadership and the work ethic of our younger athletes pays off this summer. “The Top of Iowa Conference will be incredibly balanced with Newman being the obvious favorite.” The Saints finished last season with an overall record of 20-10. St. Ansgar was the final Corn Bowl Conference champion with a record of 12-2. The Saints open their season on the road at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 23, at Central Springs. Their first home game is a doubleheader against Crestwood beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 25.

ST. ANSGAR — The St. Ansgar Saints softball team looks to be successful this year after a good off-season program, said third-year head coach Lance Schutjer. “Defense will be a strength of ours and we will work on getting better each game offensively,” he said. “Several of our players have been playing in fall and spring leagues which will assist us in being ready to go once the season starts.” Returning letter winners for the Saints include Kelsey Willert, Alex Patterson, Amelia Koster, Holbrook Schutjer, Kylie Juenger, Caitlyn Juhl, Tara Kramer, Claire
Groth, Grace Heimer, Kristen Hemann, Tanyon Schutjer, Lily Walk, Jadyn Anderson and Reanna Harris. “We have several freshmen who have worked hard in the off-season who can help us as the season goes on,” said Schutjer. “We will also be filling three positions left by last year’s senior class, so once we fill those positions we hope to be competitive. The Saints ended last season with an overall record of 16-14 and a final Corn Bowl Conference record of 8-6. Looking at his first year in the Top of Iowa Conference – East Division, Schutjer said he sees Central Springs, North Butler, St. Ansgar and Osage and the top teams.
