Hearing Associates H 1st Place: Audiologist/Hearing Aid Provider

“H

earing loss is an invisible condition that has a phenomenal impact on the activities of daily living,”said Stuart Trembath, owner and audiologist at Hearing Associates in Mason City. “It can be a huge barrier to enjoying conversation with other people. Our goal is to provide care as best we can for the patients, so they can overcome the obstacle that hearing loss provides for them,”Trembath said. “And more than just that person, but also the people around the individual that are so important.” Alex Crippin, Director of Operations, said the team focuses on service. “People come to us not just because we are knowledgeable of hearing loss and hearing aids, but because we care,”Crippin said. “We’re here to help people hear better. A hearing aid is not the cure-all, but it sure can help, and we can help them through that transition.” Hearing Associates opened 28 years ago

in Mason City. Now with nine other locations in Iowa and Minnesota, the business has a long-standing referral relationship with the medical community, particularly the Mason City Clinic Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) practice. Crippin said the audiologists at Hearing Associates all hold master’s or doctorate degrees. They use a wide variety of tests to detect hearing loss in patients of all ages. The staff also can evaluate balance issues and tinnitus (ringing in ears). Hearing loss is impacting Baby Boomers more than any previous generation, Trembath said. “In the World War II generation, hearing loss was caused by noise from the war or was factory related. For boomers, it’s mostly recreational use like music, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. When they were in the workplace, there were noise restrictions in industry. And children now have much higher hearing loss due to video gaming and headphones.”

“Studies show that a person’s ability to hear has many implications. Adults with untreated hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia, experience depression, and have a history of falling,”Crippin said. If needed, Hearing Associates helps patients choose hearing aids from some of the leading manufacturers in the industry. “Because we all have unique hearing loss, hearing aids are not ‘one size fits all’,”he said. “Not every hearing aid from a single manufacturer works for every patient.” When a patient is fitted for the right hearing aid, Hearing Associates offers classes for new users, to help them transition back to the hearing world. “It helps people realize they are not alone, and it gives them a chance to talk with others going through the same thing,”Crippin said. “We also invite the families to come, to help them re-build communication strategies together, since the individual

may have become more isolated due to the hearing loss.” Crippin said today’s digital hearing aids have much better capabilities and are beginning to link up with other electronics. “A lot of them have Bluetooth wireless technology, sort of like a headset for your phone, so they can stream music or pair up with a TV,”he said. Many public venues now offer hearing loops, devices that transmit audio signals directly to a user’s hearing aid. eaders’Choice voters recognized Otto’s Oasis Floral this year as the best shop for plants and flowers, a jump up from honorable mention in 2015. “We’ve got a good following of customers that really like the quality of our flowers and personal service that they’re not going to get at other stores,”said Jeff Otto, owner. “I worked at the Charles City location since I was in high school and also have been in the landscaping and greenhouse business all the way through,”he said. “My wife Lori and I purchased the business in Charles City in 2007. We felt the need to expand to Mason City in 2012 because we have a lot of customers from there. Then last September, we moved to the current location at 30 E. State St.” The old store was about one-third the size of the new location, now at 3,000 square

feet. “We’ve increased inventory substantially,”Otto said. “We have home and garden décor and many gift items, while still carrying green and blooming plants and floral arrangements.” Cheryl Lewis, manager of the Mason City store, said, “I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to move the store to a new location and have more to offer Mason City and the surrounding area. I was overwhelmed when I found out we won this category for Readers’Choice, just flabbergasted. It told me we must be doing something right, that people care enough to vote for us.” She noted that the shop pays particular care to the floral arrangements. “We try to put out the best quality that we can. We’re very particular about what we send out,” Lewis said. Both stores prepare wedding flowers and sympathy arrangements for fu-

nerals. Otto said, “We sit with the customer and see what you want to do that will meet your budget.” The business also stands out for growing its own flowering annuals and green plants in its Charles City greenhouse. “It’s hard to find places that grow their own plants anymore,”Otto said. “Most of them are shipped in and can get damaged on the way.”Otto’s Oasis is particularly known for its poinsettias grown in Charles City. “We’ve got great prices on those, and people tell us they last well beyond the season.” Now in spring, both stores will begin selling hanging baskets and flowering annuals from the greenhouse. “If there’s anything specific people want us to bring over to Mason City, we can do that,”he said. Otto’s Oasis also does landscaping in the area, including Mason City and Clear Lake. That includes retaining walls, brick patios,

and foundation planting to increase curb appeal, for both residential and commercial locations. Anyone interested in having landscaping done can inquire at either store. North Iowans voted Rookies the top spot for all three categories in this year’s Readers’Choice. Rookies just celebrated its 21st birthday as a favorite local bar under ownership of brothers Al and Mike Hejna. “This has been a pool hall for generations,”said Al Hejna. “We’ve got four tables and offer free pool all day Tuesdays and from 3 until 9 p.m. on Fridays.” Their Bloody Marys have gotten a reputation for being “not too hot, just hot enough,”Hejna said. “We can make it how anybody wants it. We’re versatile with drinks and can accommodate anyone’s taste.” The bar is popular with the late night crowd, Hejna said. “We have DJs every Friday and Saturday night from 9 until close.” Sixteen big-screen HDTVs draw in fans for all the sporting events. “Rookies is not just a bar anymore. We serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week,”he pointed out. It shares the kitchen with the brothers’Sevens Restaurant next door, but each has its own specials. “We have two storefronts under one business. “Sevens has a restaurant

atmosphere, and Rookies has a great sports bar menu,”Hejna said. Monday night is “buck burger”night, with quarter-pound hamburgers for $1. Also on Mondays, two loaded quarterpounders with fries is $5. You can get a tenderloin sandwich for $8 on Tuesday, steak sandwich for $8 on Wednesday, and a Philly cheese steak sandwich for $5 on Thursday. Popcorn is free every day. Locally-owned Furniture Mattress Outlet, 506 4th Street SW took first place honors in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards. “That’s pretty amazing!” said Tim Latham. Speculating on what makes Furniture Mattress Outlet a customer favorite, he said, “We’ve got a large store, about 25,000 square feet, but I think the reason people like us is the guys work really hard at customer service and there is no high pressure to buy.” The sales staff is paid a salary and does not work on commission. Latham said, “Plus, eventually they’re going to own the store, so they have a strong desire to make things work. They go way above, they know the product, and they don’t have to worry about commission. That makes a lot of difference. Mattress companies include Symbol, Spring Air and Englander. The store also offers a full line of accessories for every room. The store opened in 2002. Latham said, “We took an old building and over the years we remodeled it and made it a nice-looking building. It’s got that old warehouse look and feel, and we have virtually no overhead. That’s why we can keep prices down.”

Four team members from Northwestern Steakhouse in Mason City were recognized on March 18th as Iowa Restaurant Association “Stars of Hospitality.” To receive the recognition, restaurant employees must have worked in the same hospitality establishment for 20+ years. The honorees, Pam Bartholomew, Donna Meacham, Cindy Papouchis, and Matthew Rumeliote were presented their awards by Iowa Restaurant Association President and CEO Jessica Dunker.
