Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar ★ 1st Place: Bloody Mary Shoot Pool
R
●
Friendliest Tavern
ookies Rockin’ Sports Bar in Clear Lake is in the business of “people meeting people,” according to Al Hejna, co-owner with his brother Mike. “It’s what we’ve been doing for 22 years.” Rookies won First Place in Readers’ Choice again this year for serving the best Bloody Mary drink and as the best spot for “Shooting Pool.” It also moved up this year into First Place as the “Friendliest Tavern.” The popular bar and restaurant took Runner Up for the categories “Dancing/Nightclub” and “Place to Meet Singles” and Honorable Mentions for “Bar/Lounge to Socialize” and “Women’s Night Out.” That adds up to a lot of dedicated customers. “I think we’ve got one of the best staff teams we’ve had for a long time,” Al said. “A lot have been here for a while. They do a good job, and people keep coming back.” Four pool tables in that friendly atmosphere keep Rookies winning the top spot as a favorite place to play. Popcorn is free every
day, and DJs play music every Friday and Saturday night from 9 p.m. until closing time. “Our main draw is music and pool. It’s what we keep focused on. Late in the summer we’ll be getting four new Diamond tables,” he said. The bar keeps building on its reputation for making the best Bloody Marys. Al said, “The more recognition we get out of it, the more we seem to sell.” They serve a standard Bloody Mary, without going too overboard on spices (unless you like it that way), plus special varieties using top-shelf or flavored vodka. Sharing a kitchen with the brothers’ Sevens Restaurant next door, Rookies serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. Sevens has a restaurant atmosphere, while Rookies features a sports bar menu. Hejna said they’re looking forward to having RAGBRAI right outside their front door on Main Avenue on July 25, when the massive traveling bicycle event stays overnight in Clear Lake. “It’s just a huge day! We’ve got to capitalize on that.”

M
ercy Rehabilitation Services is the best place to get Physical Therapy, according to 2017 Readers’ Choice voters in North Iowa. Physical Therapy is just one of several treatment options offered at Mercy Rehabilitation Services Cheslea Creek, located at 1501 4th Street S.W. in Mason City. “Patients may come in for just one service, but many people need more than one of the therapies offered,” said Cheri Thomazin, Outpatient Rehabilitation Manager. In addition to Physical Therapy, services include Occupational Therapy; Speech and Language Services; mastectomy product fittings; and aquatic therapy at the Mason City YMCA. “That helps make us unique, because many other places only offer Physical Therapy. We’re proud that we can offer all this in one building for all ages, newborn through geriatrics,” Thomazin said. Another outstanding quality that sets Mercy Rehabilitation Services apart is its emphasis on relationships with patients and a one-on-one personal approach. “We really try hard to keep a patient seeing the same therapist and maybe an assistant. They become like a member of the family,” Thomazin said. “Ultimately, you have better outcomes, if the patient gets to know and trust the therapist, they will perform better. And the more the therapist knows about the person’s interests and activities, the more the patient’s treatment goals will help them get back to doing the things they enjoy most.” Thomazin added, “These services and
our personalized patient approach put us in the upper tier to be able to receive an honor such as this. We don’t rest on our laurels, we’re constantly changing, growing, and improving. We add providers and obtain additional certifications based on current and emerging patient needs.” For instance, three staff members recently completed certification in two new therapies for Parkinson’s patients, called LSVT Big and Loud. “Many patients with Parkinson’s disease have impairments with movement and voice quality. This therapy teaches them to over-exaggerate movements, to improve their gait and balance,” Thomazin explained. The center also has staff certified in McKenzie Method for musculoskeletal problems; lymphedema care, which reduces swelling of limbs; and staff that specialize in the care of pediatrics. “We offer the largest opportunities in regard to diversity of services and the oneon-one approach. It’s kind of both, offering a small business personal touch but also the latest techniques and resources.” Jenny Grant, Physical Therapist on staff, said, “I’ve worked at a few other clinics. The resources here at Mercy Rehabilitation are incredible, in terms of size and breadth of the clinic. We have a staff of eight Physical Therapists, two PT assistants, and two athletic trainers, and everybody has their strengths. That means I can bring in a person who has expert knowledge in an area that I don’t.” “I’m proud of our team and the camaraderie,” Thomazin said. “Everyone gives their 100 percent best to our patients.”

First Citizens Bank ★ 1st Place: Bank
T
he First Citizens Bank story began in 1973 when O. Jay Tomson purchased controlling interest in his first bank in Mora, Minnesota before then purchasing controlling interest in a bank in Charles City, Iowa. From there the First Citizens story has been one of growth and adaptation. First Citizens Bank is a regional community bank serving a 10 county area in Iowa and a five county area in Minnesota. With approximately $1.2 billion in assets, the Bank’s lending capacity is large enough to handle the needs of even the biggest customers in the First Citizens market. “Technology and demographics continue to change,” said Marti T. Rodamaker, President and CEO of First Citizens Bank. “We recognize that we must tailor our product and service offerings to fit many generations, and our goal is to meet and exceed the needs of our customers.” First Citizens offers online checking and savings account opening and funding, the FCB Mobile app with mobile deposits, online home loan applications, and other convenience services such as customizable debit cards, online banking, online bill pay, and e-statements.

Financial Investors/Planners
First Citizens Trust & Investment Services continues to be a significant part of First Citizens. They have around $1 billion in assets under management and approximately 8,500 acres under farm management. “We’re here to help our North Iowa and Minnesota customers with many needs including business ownership transitions, bill paying services, retirement planning, investments, farm management, and much more,” said Greg Nicholas, Senior Vice President and Trust Officer. A large part of the First Citizens story involves the First Citizens Charitable Foundation, headed by Pat Tomson, Executive Director. Since 1995, over $5.3 million has been donated to North Iowa and Minnesota communities. Recent major donations include: $15,000 to Prairie Ridge, $25,000 to Charles City Excellence in Education, $25,000 to NIACC Foundation, $25,000 to the Northern Lights Alliance for the Homeless, and $10,000 for North Iowa Youth for Christ, among many others. Area non-profit organizations wishing to apply for grants from the Foundation should visit the Bank’s website at www.firstcitizensnb.com and click
on “FC Charitable Foundation” at the top of the page. When asked what the greatest asset of the bank was, Joleen Fleming, Senior Vice President and Retail Officer, replied, “Our employees. While First Citizens stands for strength and integrity, we also believe in compassion and understanding in the daily interaction between our employees and customers.” First Citizens Bank employs over 230 individuals in nine locations. Bob Klocke, Chief Credit Officer, explained the core values of First Citizens: “Integrity, customer focus, communication, financial strength, visionary leadership, and community leadership. These are our areas of focus, and they play a role in every decision
we make.” The First Citizens Bank Mission Statement sums it up nicely: First Citizens Bank is a community bank committed to excellence in delivering the financial solutions for our customers and community… resulting in continued growth, profitability, and enhanced employee and shareholder value.

or entertainment events in North Iowa, it’s clear that Clear Lake is the place to
be. Clear Lake’s Fourth of July took top votes in the 2017 Readers’ Choice for North Iowa’s best summer event. Harvest Festival is the region’s favorite fall event, and Christmas By the Lake is named best winter event. Now the TRI Clear Lake race is joining the town’s popular event line-up. Set for June 10, this is the first annual sprint triathlon sanctioned by USA Triathlon to be held in this community. TRI Clear Lake challenges participants to a 750-meter swim course off the beach at Clear Lake State Park; a 12.4 mile bike race through the countryside; and a 3.1 mile run from State Park to City Beach along South Shore Drive. Libbey Patton, Tourism Director for the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, said, “I feel like Clear Lake is focusing on the outdoors and health. We hope this event not only brings visitors, but also attracts new residents to North Iowa – much like the

More than 100 people have already registered, out of 500 maximum participants. You can also put a team together of either 2-3 athletes. The race takes place the same weekend in town as the Take Me Back Festival, which is celebrating 20 years of superb live music with proceeds going to local charities. Details and registration for TRI Clear Lake are available at triclearlakeia.com. For more information, contact Trish Fundermann, Special Projects Director at the Clear Lake Area Chamber (trish@clearlakeiowa.com). Fourth of July festivities have been drawing crowds to Clear Lake for over a century. The multi-day event will run from Thursday, June 29, through Tuesday, July 4, 2017. Iowa’s favorite place to be on the Fourth offers a midway, amusement rides, bingo, huge lakeside vendor market, live music nightly in the bandshell, a traditional Independence Day parade down Main Avenue,
and the biggest and best fireworks display in the area over the lake. The musical line-up this year includes Crossfire, The Punching Pandas, Arch Allies, StraitRun Band, and The Hepperly Band. Harvest Festival is scheduled this year for Saturday, Oct. 7. The event invites visitors to stroll down Clear Lake’s vibrant main street while enjoying wine samplings, seminars and artist demonstrations, shopping, fall decor, a huge farmer’s market, vendors, trolley rides, homemade salsa contest, grape stomp competition, pumpkin roll relay, waiter race, food, live jazz music, and more. Souvenir bags go on sale August 1 at the Chamber of Commerce. Christmas By the Lake includes several days of activities, from Friday, Dec. 1, through Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017. Mediacom ★ 1st Place: Internet Provider
T
hank you to Mediacom’s Mason City and North Iowa Customers. We appreciate being named the Reader’s Choice #1 Internet Service Provider again this year. We are also grateful to have excellent local employees who live in your community – some who have been serving Mediacom customers since our company began operating in Iowa in 2001. At Mediacom, we listen to customers. We know they love speed and need more bandwidth than ever before to stay connected to the growing assortment of internet-dependent devices that have changed the way we live, work and play. We love speed, too. That’s why we started the year by boosting internet speeds for the 11th time in 15 years. In January, customers previously using 15 Mbps internet service experienced a four-fold increase to our new standard download speed of up to 60 Mbps. But there’s more to being a speed and technology leader.
MEDIACOM MAKES IOWA FIRST GIGABIT STATE In January, Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds joined Mediacom’s founder and CEO, Rocco Commisso, to announce that the company launched 1-Gig internet service across its entire Iowa footprint. As a result, Iowa became the first Gigabit state in the U.S. Today, Iowans in nearly 1 million households across the Hawkeye state can choose to connect to 1-Gig service and enjoy internet download speeds that are 40 times faster than the minimum broadband definition set by the Federal Communications Commission. No other state has yet to make such an extensive transition to a “Gigasphere” platform using the newest broadband technology (DOCSIS 3.1). Mediacom delivers 1-Gig speeds to residents and businesses in 309 Iowa communities, large and small. No other ISP has made such an extensive financial commitment to ensure that this new-generation broadband service is widely available in non-urban areas. “Since 1999, Mediacom has invested $3 billion of private capital in Iowa to ensure that hard-working families throughout the Hawkeye State receive the same advanced communications services as America’s largest cities,” said Mediacom’s Commisso. “As a result of these investments, I am extremely proud to announce that Iowa is not only Mediacom’s first gigabit state, but now leads all U.S. states in gigabit
broadband availability.”
WHAT DO IOWANS DO WITH GIGABIT BROADBAND? 1-Gig internet is ideal for connecting multiple devices and ensuring maximum performance as consumers turn to on connected devices for everything from live action sports to home automation and security. • Our internet connection is the engine that lets us stream video to multiple screens throughout our homes – all at the same time; • A 1-Gig connection is so powerful it can stream 40 4K Ultra HD videos at the same time. 4K Ultra HD video is the way of the future and requires 25 Mbps to stream 1 video. • 1-Gig speed is 40 times faster than the average speed currently offered across the country; and using this speed – a two-hour movie in HD downloads in just 28 seconds. • Look around today’s digital home -- light bulbs, t–hermostats, motion detectors and doorbells are embedded with the ability to communicate through a home network to let the user control, monitor or change settings remotely from a smartphone or tablet. • Home appliances now come with digital assistants, letting connected users tap an onscreen icon to pre-heat an oven on the way home from work, or activate cycle settings for a washing machine.

It began in 1930 as the story of two men and one gigantic leap of faith… When Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened their first store in Beaconsfield, Iowa in 1930, the Great Depression was just taking hold. But they had faith in themselves, faith in each other, and faith in the fundamental principles that guided their business – friendliness, helpfulness, honesty, dedication and respect. Hy-Vee of Mason City first opened its doors on April 28, 1965. Now over 50 years later, we’ve grown from a single store to 3 large stores, and those fundamental principles Hyde and Vredenburg believed so strongly in, still guide the way Hy-Vee does business today. We are proud to offer quality groceries and merchandise plus a wide variety of services to the residents of north central Iowa.

Furniture Mattress Outlet ★ 1st Place: Furniture
F
urniture Mattress Outlet, known for offering quality furniture and mattresses at affordable prices, took First Place honors in Readers’ Choice Awards again this year. “That’s pretty amazing!” said owner Tim Latham. “We’ve got a large store, about 25,000 square feet, but I think the reason people like us is the guys work really hard at customer service and there is no high pressure to buy.” As time goes by, the locally-owned store continues to add more selection, and Latham said there is an ever-increasing variety of fabrics customers can choose from. “This coming year we look to expand the store to add about 15,000 square-feet of show space,” Latham said. “We could not do this without the support of North Iowa. We want to thank everyone for helping us to continue to serve them with great furniture and prices.” The Mason City store at 506 4th Street SW opened in 2002. Latham said, “We took an old building and over the years remodeled it. And made it one of the nicer-looking buildings in the area. It has that old warehouse
look and feeling.” The strong sales staff at Furniture Mattress Outlet is what keeps the store popular with customers, according to Latham. The sales employees are paid by salary and do not work on commission. “Plus, eventually they’re going to own the store, so they have a strong desire to make things work,” he said. “They go way above, they know the product, and they don’t have to worry about commission. That makes a lot of difference. They take interest in all customers, not just those that purchase furniture.” Randy Klemesrud has worked with Latham for 35 years, starting at the former Latham Furniture, and the rest of the employees are relatives of Klemesrud. That includes his son Jack, and Jack’s brothers-in-law Ryan and Dan. The store offers free delivery and financing to customers. “We not only deliver, we bring it in

T
he Other Place in Clear Lake won First Place in five categories for this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards and honorable mention in two additional categories. “We’re pretty excited to get first for best Sport Bar and Grill. That’s our first time,” said Kali Wilkinson, event planner at the OP. “And Friendliest Bartender Staff also made our staff feel great. It’s important to us to give good service. We’d like to thank everybody for their continued support!” The OP also won for best place to have adult birthday parties, best onion rings, and best pizza. The restaurant’s chicken wings and tenderloins drew honorable mentions. Kali said they are gearing up for a busy and exciting spring and summer. “The deck will be open, with a different food menu this year and lots of fun drinks.” Featured events include “Dirt Talk Live,” with radio personality J. Brooks interviewing local speedway racers from 6:30 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday. “This year we’re giving away free tickets for the Sunday night races at Mason City Motor Speedway during that time,” Kali said.
●
Every Wednesday is also Bike Night at the OP. Live music and special food draws in hundreds of motorcyclists from all over the region to the party building adjacent to the restaurant. Kali noted that this space, added a couple years ago, is also available to rent for private parties. The annex holds about 150 people and includes a kitchen. The Fourth of July is on a Tuesday this year, so the town’s big celebration runs from June 29 through July 4. “We’ll be celebrating the Fourth of July with live music and fun specials,” Kali said. Then there’s RAGBRAI, the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. Tens of thousands of riders and supporters will stay overnight in Clear Lake on July 25, so the OP will help them celebrate. Kali said many riders also will drive through the area on the previous Saturday, on their way to the Sunday starting point on the western edge of Iowa, so the OP will have a party to welcome them. The OP opened in 1979. Brian Hagenow and Chuck Larson are co-owners. Check out the OP’s Facebook page (OPClearLake) for daily menu specials and updates on its many events.
North Central Mechanical Services ★ 1st Place: Heating & Cooling
N
athan Bartels, owner of North Central Mechanical Services in Mason City, says attention to detail, hard work, and fair prices helped him expand his business from the ground up. This year, customers voted NCMS as Readers’ Choice top pick for heating and cooling services. Bartels said, “This is the second time in the 6 ½ year history of our company, and we are very thankful to our customers for their continued support. A big part of the company success is our great employees and their dedication to make sure all work is performed to the company’s high standards.” NCMS technicians have master and journeyman certifications including: HVAC, Plumbing, Hydronics, Refrigeration and Special Electricians Certification, Boiler Operator 1 training certification, Iowa Backflow Assembly & Test certification, SAVE certification for all your energy company rebates, North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification, and Fujitsu training, along with many specialized factory training classes for specific manufacturers’ equipment. Heating and cooling is just the start of what
this firm offers. North Central Mechanical Services is a dealer for Trane, Lennox, WaterFurnace geothermal, and Central Boiler wood burner furnaces. The company also handles ventilation, boiler systems, custom duct work, sheet metal fabrication, plumbing, backflow service, duct cleaning and more. After attending the North Iowa Area Small Business Development Center to evaluate his business plan, Bartels started business in 2010 out of his home. He moved operations about five years ago to a 6,000-square-foot building on Taft and quickly outgrew that shop after only two years. NCMS then moved to its current 36,000-square-foot building at 2601 15th St. SW. The company now employs 15 people and expects to add more workers in the next few years due to increasing demand. “Attention to detail and dedication to work” is the owner’s motto, according to office manager Enid Lauritsen. A graduate of NIACC, Bartels serves on the advisory board for its heating and air conditioning technology program. NCMS promotes the program to help it grow and develop qualified technicians for our community.

S
tate Farm Insurance agents continue to be recognized as the best insurance agency in Readers’ Choice voting. “We are very honored to be once again recognized by the North Iowa community as the Readers’ Choice Insurance Agency,” said Kristy Marquis. She has been with State Farm 24 years, the past 15 as an agent in Mason City. “While people see State Farm as being ‘there’ in that moment of need when things go wrong, we are also ‘here’ to help things go right in their lives, and our customers truly appreciate that,” Kristy said. “Being a good neighbor is basically about being ‘here’ in all of life’s moments. From saving for college, to buying a new car, to strengthening our communities, we all stand ready to help our customers realize their dreams, and that’s what makes us #1.” Clint Thomas, also a Mason City agent for State Farm, recently celebrated his 20-year anniversary with the company. This was Clint’s first job out of college, and he hopes it will be his last as well. “I love making an impact on client’s lives,” Clint said. “We aren’t the number one choice of clients in North Iowa because of our price. When you become a client with us, you get much more than just an insurance policy.” Clint said State Farm’s public information message about texting while driving is making a difference. “We are really proud of our ‘X the text’ radio campaign. I really feel like my message is being heard around North Iowa and making an impact on people’s lives. I’ve had numerous comments, letters, and stories from clients and others in the community that have either written or called
me to let me know the impact this is having on them or someone else in their lives.” State Farm agent Tim Ihlenfeldt said, “Our goal at the Ihlenfeldt Agency is to help clients prepare for what could go wrong so they could invest in what could go right.” The Ihlenfeldt Agency recently rescued an old church building in Mason City. It now has been restored to serve as a beautiful office. In addition to their trust in State Farm services, his clients also take notice of his stewardship of the community. “I appreciate the fact that an amazing building can still be used and not forgotten,” commented Diane, a State Farm customer. “This is the coolest insurance office I’ve ever seen!” said Amanda, another client. Tim said, “Our agency continues to advance with today’s insurance and financial service needs with a facility that remembers and celebrates the past.” Tim Ihlenfeldt has over 20 years agency experience. The Ihlenfeldt Agency includes Courtny Beals, Office Manager, and Steven Cooper, Insurance and Bank Representative. Kim Ruter represents State Farm at her office in Clear Lake. “State Farm has a culture that is about giving back to their customers and community. We, as agents, are united to support each other on this fundamental principle through our professionalism, respect, and building relationships on a daily basis,” Kim said. “To be given this award again, lines up with one of the many great philosophies of State Farm and makes us all very grateful for this achievement. On behalf of State Farm and the local agents, thank you again for making us #1!”

idwest Construction’s longevity, products, and service make it a customer favorite in several aspects of home improvement. This year, the company took First Place in the “Siding” category of the Readers’ Choice Awards. It also received Runner-Up in “Remodeling Contractor” and “Window/Door Retailer,” plus Honorable Mention for “Gutter Sales and Installation.” “We’d like to thank our past and current customers for voting for us and also thank our prospective customers for considering us,” says Paul Despenas, Vice President of Marketing at Midwest Construction. His dad started the family business in 1958 and came up with the company motto: “Quality Products, Quality Installation.” Now the company has showrooms and warehouses in both Mason City and Des Moines. “Because of that length of time, we’re very fortunate to have picked the best manufacturers years ago because of the features of their products,” Paul says. “And because they are the best products, customers get the best warranty.” Along with having the best labor in the industry, he says it adds up to “the Midwest Construction difference.” The company employs 25 full-time workers, including a complete service department. “We
make sure all our installers are certified in the products they install, and even our production managers are certified. So homeowners are assured the product is installed according to manufacturer’s specifications. Since we’re doing it right, the warranty we provide is a true warranty. If a product fails, we’ll be there. We won’t let the homeowner sit out in the cold.” Midwest Construction features American Classic vinyl and polymeric siding, James Hardy fiber cement siding, and ecoSmart replacement windows. It also specializes in patio and entrance doors, gutters and downspouts, and basically anything to do with exterior remodeling. “The pride of our fleet is Oasis All-Season Sun Rooms,” Paul says. The company has won many prestigious awards from manufacturers, but Paul is particularly proud of receiving the Better Business Bureau Integrity Award for Fair and Ethical Business Practices in both 1999 and 2015. “There are not a lot of businesses who have won this award not once, but twice.” Paul says, “We take each and every job seriously and with a passion. Whether it’s just one window or door or a big commercial job, it’s done with pride, with the best product and the best installation technique and the best service.”

areway Stores are the best place to buy meat, according to voters in the 2017 Readers’ Choice contest. “We’d like to thank our customers,” said Adam Jeppeson, meat manager at the Mason City Fareway Store. It’s all about quality, price, and service, according to Jeppeson. “I think the thing that makes us separate from the rest is our fullservice meat market,” he said. “Our fresh meat has no preserva-tives, no additives. We’re kind of a throwback in time, as far as still having a fresh meat coun-ter.” Also, Jeppeson said Fareway’s meat is priced very competitively. Fareway matches weekly ad prices from other stores. Finally, the service level is high, with many years of experience on staff. Jeppeson has been with Fareway for 20 years, and Ryan Fasbender, meat manager at the Clear Lake Fareway, has about 30 years on the job. “Many of the meat counter employees have been with Fareway a long time. In Mason City and Clear Lake combined, I’d

say it totals up to over 200 years of experience,” Jeppeson said. Fareway is a family-owned grocery business with 117 stores. Started in 1938, the company is headquartered in Iowa. Each store has a grocery manager and a meat manager. Fareway is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and the meat counter is staffed throughout all store hours.

North Iowa Community Credit Union ★ 1st Place: Credit Union
N
orth Iowa Community Credit Union takes First Place again this year as the best local credit union in the Readers’ Choice Awards. “A lot of people don’t know how a credit union differs from a bank, says Scott Shipman, President and CEO. “We’re a not-forprofit institution, run by a volunteer board of directors, and we’re member-owned. Any profits at NICCU go back to members in the form of higher interest on savings accounts, lower interest on loans, and smaller fees, according to Shipman. “A credit union is basically like a co-op, so the members are the owners. We don’t have stockholders. Members have a say on what goes on and can voice that at our annual meeting, Shipman says. Unlike many national banks, members of NICCU’s board of directors are all volunteers instead of being paid for their services. “They are elected by our members, Shipman says. Started in 1956, NICCU now has almost 12,000 members. You can apply to be a member if you live or work in Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Hancock, Winnebago, Worth, or Wright counties, or have a family member who already is a member of NICCU.
The credit union also invests in educating people about money matters, including a strong youth program. “Our young members are encouraged to set goals and meet monthly challenges, Shipman says. “We help them get to know what a credit union does and how members participate. NICCU can provide presentations to groups on educational topics, such as how to save or tips for budgeting. With two locations in Mason City and approximately 25 staff members, NICCU also is a shared branching co-op. That means NICCU members can access their accounts at any of 5,000 partner locations across the country, which is great for snowbirds, families on vacation, or students off at college. “The credit union philosophy worldwide is ‘people helping people,’ Shipman says. NICCU promotes and supports its local communities. Every month, two employees are chosen to decide on where to spread random acts of kindness in the form of staff volunteering time or donating money to local causes. Beyond this, NICCU encourages employees to support the community through volunteer hours and contributions to local charities, civic groups, and non-profit organizations.

iscount Computer & Cell Phone Repair (DCR) was recently voted best in the “Computer Repair” and “Cell Phone Repair” categories in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards. We always strive to resolve the headache of your slow or broken computers, cell phones, and tablets by tackling jobs other retail firms won’t and can’t do. At DCR we can repair, recycle, or replace almost any time of electronic equipment at an affordable price, including Apple devices. If you don’t know what’s wrong with your device, then bring it into DCR for free diagnostics. We can also recycle your old computers, cell phones, tablets, flat screen monitors/TV’s, and general electronics for FREE! We also sell refurbished computers, monitors, batteries, laptop power supplies, cables, and other accessories. DCR also sells a variety of brand new computers at great prices. Juan said, “We usually carry about 50 laptops, including Macs. If you don’t need a laptop, then come and look at our wide selections of desktop computers.” The store has three highly skilled technicians that will try to help you any way we
can. Loren Bitker is the owner of the business and specializes in anything electronic. Loren will always do his best to make sure you lave happy. Jim Bitker is the Manager and specializes in laptop and desktop repair. He makes sure you understand what is wrong with the computer and will recommend the best option for you. Juan specializes in cell phone and computer repair. He will quickly repair almost anything with the highest quality control possible. Jim says that one of the most common issues we see is broken screens. “We stock most common screens and can replace them in-store.” Most big box stores send your device to a different company for repair, DCR does repairs in-house. Another issue we often see are viruses and malware. We do all types of virus and malware removal with our seventy-one anti-virus engine system, this can usually be done within two days. If you suspect that your device has a virus, then come to DCR for a free diagnostic. One virus scam we see often is a pop-up claiming to be Microsoft and asks the user to call a number and give

H
awkeye Auto Body of Mason City will celebrate 41 years in business this July. “We started in 1976 right after the Bicentennial,” said owner Jerry Knoll. The Knoll family has built the shop’s reputation on commitment to their customers, because they understand the frustration and vulnerability associated with the repair process, according to Jerry. “Our goal is to restore not only your vehicle, but your piece of mind. We are committed to getting you back to your normal routine safely, and as quickly as possible. We appreciate the trust and confidence you place in our family owned business.” “Thanks to everyone who voted us to first place in the Readers’ Choice category, Auto Body,” said Ryan Knoll, Jerry’s son. “That’s a testimony to what we provide for service. It’s a key part of business anymore. If you don’t have that, you’re going down in a hurry. It’s hard to get new customers, so you have to take care of the ones that come through the door.” In addition to collision repair, Hawkeye Auto Body offers full detail service, windshield chip repair, headlight polishing, hail
repair, and express scratch repair. Looking to the future, the team keeps up with the increasingly technical services demanded by advances in the auto industry. Hawkeye Auto Body strengthened their commitment to customer service this past year by achieving Assured Performance Certification. This designation means the shop meets quality standards for the right tools, equipment, training, and facilities necessary to repair vehicles from several major manufacturers. All employees at Hawkeye took job-specific training over the course of a year, and Assured Performance conducted an on-site inspection before granting certification, Ryan said. “Assured Performance only certifies a certain number of shops in a geographic area. Now when people come to us, they’ll know we are recognized to work on that manufacturer’s vehicles.” We are now recognized as a certified repair facility for Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Infiniti, and Hyundai. W
e, the team at Central Park Dentistry, are celebrating the honor of being voted the best dentist for the 2017 Reader’s Choice! The award continues our strong tradition of being a leader in dental excellence. We would like to thank our patients for honoring us now several years in a row with this award. At Central Park Dentistry, the positive energy is palpable as soon as you walk in the door. Our team is eager to assist you with your needs! We are always welcoming new patients, young and old. Our loyal patients will tell you that all of our doctors and staff develop connected relationships with each patient. Our patients also enjoy the funfilled atmosphere in our office. We provide a great mix of modern technology and treatment, along with time-proven techniques. In office, we now have the ability to make 3D xrays of the teeth and jaw, when needed, for a more exact diagnosis. Dr. Lala can use this to remove impacted wisdom teeth with precision. We all use 3D technology to aid treatment especially root canal therapy. We use an ITERO digital
scanner for the doctors to create 3D models of the patient’s teeth and bite. Digital scanning eliminates impressions, making the treatment easier, faster and more accurate. Dr. Hansen can use the ITERO to educate patients on their personal bite issues and the outcome of future Invisalign treatment in a matter of minutes. Drs. Lala and Hansen use these technologies to provide dental implants to patients who need missing teeth replaced. Dr. Jennifer Thackery joined us 2 years ago and has been a “perfect fit”. Dr. Thackery is skilled in utilizing technology and creating comprehensive treatment plans. Most importantly, she’s able to communicate treatment options in a way people trust and in words they understand. We have exciting new changes coming to Central Park Dentistry this year! Please like us on Facebook and watch our website as we expand. We will be opening an office in Sheffield, a solid community that we are thrilled to become a part of. We will offer our complete line of services at this location. All our doctors will see patients here too, for
your convenience. We have two home grown doctors joining our team this year. We are proud to announce Patrick Kolker of Clear Lake will be joining our team. Brianna Lage of Meservey will also be a new doctor to Central Park Dentistry in the summer. Both have trained at the University of Iowa and come highly recommended by University Faculty. We know you will enjoy getting to know them both! We look forward to creating the best dental experience for your entire family. Again, thank you for this honor and your trust. Hearing Associates ★ 1st Place: Audiologist/Hearing Aid Provider
“H
earing loss is an invisible condition that has a phenomenal impact on the activities of daily living,” said Stuart Trembath, owner and audiologist at Hearing Associates in Mason City. “It can be a huge barrier to enjoying conversation with other people. Our goal is to provide care as best we can for the patients, so they can overcome the obstacle that hearing loss provides for them,” Trembath said. “And more than just that person, but also the people around the individual that are so important.” Alex Crippin, Director of Operations, said the team focuses on service. “People come to us not just because we are knowledgeable of hearing loss and hearing aids, but because we care,” Crippin said. “We’re here to help people hear better. A hearing aid is not the cure-all, but it sure can help, and we can help them through that transition.” Hearing Associates opened 28 years ago in Mason City. Now with nine other locations in Iowa and Minnesota, the business has a long-standing referral relationship with the medical community, particularly the Mason City Clinic Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) practice.
Crippin said the audiologists at Hearing Associates all hold master’s or doctorate degrees. They use a wide variety of tests to detect hearing loss in patients of all ages. The staff also can evaluate balance issues and tinnitus (ringing in ears). Hearing loss is impacting Baby Boomers more than any previous generation, Trembath said. “In the World War II generation, hearing loss was caused by noise from the war or was factory related. For boomers, it’s mostly recreational use like music, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. When they were in the workplace, there were noise restrictions in industry. And children now have much higher hearing loss due to video gaming and headphones.” “Studies show that a person’s ability to hear has many implications. Adults with untreated hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia, experience depression, and have a history of falling,” Crippin said. If needed, Hearing Associates helps patients choose hearing aids from some of the leading manufacturers in the industry. “Because we all have unique hearing loss,
hearing aids are not ‘one size fits all’,” he said. “Not every hearing aid from a single manufacturer works for every patient.” When a patient is fitted for the right hearing aid, Hearing Associates offers classes for new users, to help them transition back to the hearing world. “It helps people realize they are not alone, and it gives them a chance to talk with others going through the same thing,” Crippin said. “We also invite the families to come, to help them re-build communication strategies together, since the individual may have become more isolated due to the hearing loss.” Crippin said today’s digital hearing aids have much better capabilities and are beginning to link up with other electronics. “A lot of them have Bluetooth wireless technology, sort of like a headset for your phone, so they can stream music or pair up
with a TV,” he said. Many public venues now offer hearing loops, devices that transmit audio signals directly to a user’s hearing aid. Learn more about hearing loss, hearing aids, and how Hearing Associates can help at www.hearingassociatesmc.com. Hearing Associates Open: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm
