CENT Credit Union ★ Readers’ Choice: Credit Union

C

ENT Credit Union was voted the best credit union in North Iowa for the first time by readers of the Globe Gazette in this year’s Readers’ Choice. “We’re very proud of who we are, where we’re from, where we’ve been and where were going,” said President and CEO Matthew Chizek. “It’s because people believe in and support our mission that Every CENT Counts.” “Five years ago, when I was interviewing for this opportunity, we weren’t in the position of the top 10 or even top 12 in the marketplace. But we’ve attracted high character and high energy team members to help develop the culture we want to achieve. We take great pride in this honor that people have voted on, because we consider ourselves the people’s champion.” As a credit union, CENT is a memberowned, not-for-profit financial cooperative that provides savings, credit, and other financial services to its members. Profit is returned to members in the form of better rates. The business changed its name from MCLG Family Credit Union about four year ago to unify all the various smaller credit unions it had brought under one roof over time. “Over the years of combining, it got to be a lot of letters in the name,” said Matt Bradley, Marketing Director. “We needed to bring that all together, and we were inspired by the message on the

back of the penny: e pluribus unum. Out of many, one, and that became CENT.” CENT Credit Union membership is open to employees and their families from city, county, state, and federal government, healthcare affiliates, and many private industries in the area. CENT also brought two vacant buildings in Mason City back to life: its CENTer at 25 W. State St., and the CENT WestSide branch at 3124 4th St. SW, which was formerly a Community National Bank. The main office went from its previous 3,000 square feet to the current 35,000 square feet on State Street. Extra office space is rented out to different partners, and rooms are available for business meetings. “We bring change,” Chizek said. “It’s exciting change. It’s what makes progress. Five years ago, we had seven employees, and now it’s over 20. Based on the support, we’re able to create fun local positions in Mason City. We have a longstanding, proud history of organizations we support.” The recent growth is an outcome of changing the company’s culture, according to Chizek. “We had to set a new baseline for what we stand for and believe in, not of words but of deeds. It’s very powerful when we actually live by that. It’s a ‘service above self’ mentality.” Five years ago, the business gave out one $500 scholarship as a community support

effort. “In the past year, through volunteerism and donations, we’ve given $100,000 back to the community,” he said. “We’re extremely proud of our volunteer hours. Giving of time shows extreme value. All of the money stays locally. We stand by local organizations because we are local.” And in turn, CENT’s support of members has grown. “Last year we had nearly a 100 percent increase in return back to our membership in terms of rate of return through massive growth. We compete with some fantastic local credit unions and banks, and all must be applauded,” Chizek said. “But we have been able to carve out our niche. We know what we’re good at, which is serving others through high rates of return and low loan interest rates.” Bradley said, “We have innovative products. We think we’re driving CD rates up in the area. Our checking account has a 3 percent interest rate, which is awesome. It’s had an impact on everybody.” The credit union is now introducing a new style of checking account, called CENTennial Checking. It includes innovative extras like free streaming options for music and movies, a free debit card that members can personalize with a photo, and monthly coupons. CENT also strives to create a fun atmosphere for members and the greater commu-

nity. It hosts kids from around the community through an annual CENT-a-bration, which features inflatables, sport games, and other activities. There’s also an annual Iowa-Iowa State tailgate event; a partnership with others to present a Thanksgiving dinner for seniors at the Knights of Columbus Hall; and free professional photos with Santa each year. While CENT supports many local charities and projects for giving back to the community, some of the projects and partners CENT is affiliated with include Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank; Our Loving Children, supporting families of individuals with autism; My Happy Place, which does bedroom makeovers for children with medical conditions; and My Happy Haven, offering room makeovers for women fighting cancer. It doesn’t have to be a big event to lift up its members or the community. CENT can brighten up anybody’s day with Fresh Cookie Fridays (“We have our own oven,” Bradley said) or a game of air hockey in the lobby. “We believe in a family fun banking experience,” Chizek said. “Where else can you play basketball or Xbox in the lobby or find a floor made of pennies? CENT, where we dare to be different and live the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people.’ We’re proud of it.” Chizek invites anyone who wants to be part of the change to check out CENT’s web site at CENTCU.org.

Midwest Construction ★ Readers’ Choice: Gutter Sales/Installation Siding

F

Window/Door Retailer

amily-owned Midwest Construction is celebrating its 60th anniversary in the home improvement business this year. So it’s a fitting birthday present that the 2018 Readers’ Choice top picks for Gutter Sales/Installation, Siding, and Window/Door Retailer all went to Midwest Construction. “We’re fortunate to not only stay in business that long, but to grow,” said Paul Despenas, V.P Marketing “We’ve got the third generation working here now, and the fourth generation will be getting their tool belts in the next couple of summers.” The business was founded in 1958 by Alex P. Despenas, specializing in exterior home remodeling in Iowa and southern Minnesota. Despenas said his dad had the philosophy, “Quality Products, Quality Installation,” and it still drives the company today. “He worked for other companies for a while, but he had a conscience. He cared about what happened after he left. He started his own business so he could control what happened from sales to the end.” To this day, Despenas said they stick with the best product lines. “We have found the best manufacturers with the most research and development behind them. We chose some of them 34 years ago and they are still leaders, such as the Great Lakes EcoSmart window.” He said they’re happy to be in Mason City and thankful for their customers. “We won’t let them down. It might cost a little more money to do business with Midwest Construction, but the products we offer are by far the best products in the industry. And we have the best labor, certified and experts in their field. We feel we owe it to the community. The cheapest job is not always the best.” Midwest Construction has won two Better Business Bureau awards, according to Despenas. In 2015, it received the BBB’s Integrity award for its ideals of trust, reliability,

and ethics. In 1999, the BBB recognized the company for its marketing efforts including actual customer testimonials TV commercials of satisfied customers. The 2015 award was related to a particular story, he said. “Our salesman went to a home in Mason City to give an estimate, and the woman said it was higher, so she went with another company. The poor lady walked in a few weeks later and said, ‘I probably should have gone with you guys. Now they owe me money and still haven’t finished.’ So my sister sent my nephews over to inventory a list of things to fix, and then she sent them back to fix the problems for nothing. We disapproved to see her taken advantage of.” The company has two showrooms, at 1601 S. Taft Ave. in Mason City and also in Grimes near Des Moines, including full-size sunrooms and fully-functional window and siding displays. Call 641-715-9007 or visit the web site at mwcinc.com for more information.

GLOBE GAZETTE READERS’ CHOICE 2018

Dave Poppy, owner of Jacobson Electric in Clear Lake, says he’s “a bit of a perfectionist,” while showing a cell phone picture of a meticulous arrangement of wires in a complex electrical installation. That may be why the business is top choice for Electrician in the Globe Gazette’s 2018 Readers’ Choice voting. Having purchased Jacobson Electric in 2014, Poppy has gone from a pickup truck and one part-time helper, to a six employee operation, with five company vehicles. This hasn’t happened by accident. Poppy instills his work ethic and attention to detail into all his staff, so the same high standards are always met. “When I walk onto a job, any job, I shouldn’t be able to tell you which employee did the work. If I didn’t know better I’d think I did it, because company-wide we are all on the same page; my way. The same quality and attention to detail is expected across the board,” he said. This conscientiousness is seen even in the way Poppy organizes the vehicles. All vans are set up and stocked exactly the same way. According to Poppy, “It eliminates the learning curve. It doesn’t matter which truck an employee finds himself working out of, the parts, supplies, tools and materials are all located in the same spot, in every vehicle. It helps us all be more efficient with the use of our customer’s time. While it may seem like a small thing, it adds up.” Poppy has a Master Class A Electrical license, issued by the State of Iowa, which is the highest licensing level an electrician can achieve. Poppy was employed as an instructor for Associated Builders and Contractors of Iowa (ABC) & taught the apprenticeship classes that were formerly held onsite at the North Iowa Area Community College. “When I was an apprentice, my instructor told us in 15 years the Baby Boomers would be retiring and there will be a huge demand for skilled trades. We’re experiencing that right now,” Poppy said. “It’s extremely hard to find and hire good help.” What drew Poppy into the trade? “I was looking for something that could challenge my mind. A career where I would never grow bored. As an electrician you’re always learning, and you’ll never learn it all,” he said. “Technology is ever changing and something new is always on the horizon.” He encourages others to consider the same career path, as opposed to getting a four-year degree and being saddled with debt. Jacobson Electric offers a $250 sign-on bonus as well as a $250 referral reward. This encourages others to refer quality help his way. Employees earn competitive wages, with benefits that include profit sharing, retirement plan, paid holidays and vacations. Jacobson Electric offers apprenticeship training through ABC of Iowa’s 4 year apprenticeship program, where apprentices spend 3 weeks per year in the classroom coupled with on the job training. Poppy, a strong advocator of education, was once

SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2018

asked “What if you spend all the time and money sending your employees to school and afterwards they quit?” Poppy replied “What if I don’t educate them and they stay?” “Becoming a licensed journeyman is rewarding, but takes time. Typically, a Journeyman electrician must complete four years of schooling, log a minimum of 8,000 documented hours on the job, and finally must pass the 3 hour Journeyman’s Examine,” explained Poppy. Poppy estimates about half of Jacobson Electric’s business comes from commercial projects; 40 percent residential; with the remaining 10% divided between industrial and agricultural work. Of note, Jacobson Electric recently completed Clear Lake Bank and Trust’s new addition, located in the heart of downtown Clear Lake. Construction, which began in April of 2017, has just wrapped up. “We were thrilled to take part in this project. It’s been a pleasure working with Dean Snyder Construction these past 10 months. A larger project such as this is all the more rewarding, and seeing it come together to completion, that’s the icing on the cake.” Poppy pointed out that Alliant Energy is offering substantial LED rebates this year; available to commercial customers. “With increasing population, the demand for energy continues to rise. Energy companies are realizing it costs more to build new power plants than it does to pay people to cut back on the amount of electricity they use.” The introduction of new energy efficient LED lighting is the quickest and easiest way to achieve this goal. Up to an 80% reduction in energy consumption is now not only possible, but affordable. Jacobson Electric offers area businesses a free consultation and audit. This includes a survey of the facility, a light study, recommendations, and a comprehensive report detailing proposed energy savings, along with Alliant Energy rebate information and eligibility. Dave’s wife Sara has a degree in finance from University of Northern Iowa and fills the role of Office Manager. “Sara works tirelessly from behind the scenes to help our days run smooth. From accounting to answering the phone calls and scheduling the work. There’s just no way I could do it all without her help,” says Dave. They have three children: Kylie, 12; Kaden, 11; and Peyton, 9. The Poppy family moved to an acreage north of Clear Lake two years ago from Mason City. “I’m more focused on the customer’s needs than mine,” Poppy said of his work. “My job is to help people. The way I look at it, being in business is all about building relationships. The past 4 years I’ve met a lot of great people and have developed some very strong friendships. I’ve learned that this is what it’s all about. We do our best to take care of people and everything else falls into place. Thank you to all those who cast their vote for Jacobson Electric. In the face of such competition, it is humbling and truly an honor for us to receive this award and recognition.”

Hosmer Honda ★ Readers’ Choice: New Auto Dealership

H

osmer Honda in Mason City took top honors as Readers’ Choice for New Auto Dealership in this year’s voting through the Globe Gazette. Josh Cunningham, Hosmer Honda’s general manager, said it’s nice to make a mark with how they operate. “I’d describe the car buying experience here as easy,” he said. “Our sole purpose is to sell cars. It’s the only reason we’re here, and we want to make that happen.” He attributes the dealership’s success to focusing on what the customer wants. “We listen. We try to figure out exactly what the customer wants, what their needs are, even when it comes down to the amount they want to spend,” Cunningham said. “We do everything to make that happen, even if it comes down to pulling out our invoice to show you just how fair of a deal you are making. We’re very transparent.” The Hosmer Honda facility at 3825 4th St. SW is three years old, featuring a highceiling showroom walled with glass. “It’s bright and lifts the spirits,” Cunningham said. Owner Jeremiah Hosmer, of Nora Springs,

is the grandson of Bill Lyons who was part of Mason City’s car scene for years as owner of Lyons Toyota. The Toyota dealership next door is also under Hosmer ownership. Hosmer Honda employs nearly 20 people, including four sales people and four service technicians, two of whom are ASC Certified. Cunningham started out selling cars for Toyota and has been with Hosmer ever since it took over the Honda dealership in 2011. Honda CR-V is Motor Trend’s SUV of the

Year for 2018, and the Accord was named North American Car of the Year in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. In 2017, the Civic was named Kelley Blue Book’s Best Buy of the Year. “Honda’s re-sale value is some of the highest in its class. The Accord model is completely redesigned this year,” Cunningham said. The Hosmer service department is ready to support customers when they bring in vehicles for maintenance or repairs, using genuine

Honda parts and accessories. “If you can’t make it in, because of work or your schedule, we’ll pick up your vehicle and drop it off for no extra charge,” he said. “We also offer a loaner vehicle during service work.” The dealership features an extensive collection of new and certified pre-owned Honda vehicles, as well as used cars from other manufacturers. All current inventory and prices can be viewed on the web site at hosmerhonda.com.

Hearing Associates ★ Readers’ Choice: Audiologist/Hearing Aid Provider

“H

earing loss is an invisible condition that has a phenomenal impact on the activities of daily living,” said Stuart Trembath, owner and audiologist at Hearing Associates in Mason City. “It can be a huge barrier to enjoying conversation with other people. Our goal is to provide care as best we can for the patients, so they can overcome the obstacle that hearing loss provides for them,” Trembath said. “And more than just that person, but also the people around the individual that are so important.” Alex Crippin, Director of Operations, said the team focuses on service. “People come to us not just because we are knowledgeable about hearing loss and hearing devices, but because we care,” Crippin said. “We’re here to help people hear better. A hearing device is not the cure-all, but it sure can help, and we can help them through that transition.” Hearing Associates opened 30 years ago in Mason City. Now with nine other locations in Iowa and Minnesota, the business has a longstanding referral relationship with the medical community, particularly the Mason City Clinic Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) practice.

Crippin said the audiologists at Hearing Associates all hold master’s or doctorate degrees. They use a wide variety of tests to detect hearing loss in patients of all ages. The staff also can evaluate balance issues and tinnitus (ringing in ears). Hearing loss is impacting Baby Boomers more than any previous generation, Trembath said. “In the World War II generation, hearing loss was caused by noise from the war or was factory related. For boomers, it’s mostly recreational use like music, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. When they were in the workplace, there were noise restrictions in industry. And children now have much higher hearing loss due to video gaming and headphones.” “Studies show that a person’s ability to hear has many implications. Adults with untreated hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia, experience depression, and have a history of falling,” Crippin said. If needed, Hearing Associates helps patients choose hearing devices from some of the leading manufacturers in the industry. “Because we all have unique hearing ability, hearing devices are not ‘one size fits all’,” he said. “Not every

hearing device from a single manufacturer works for every patient.” When a patient is fit with the correct hearing device, Hearing Associates offers classes for new users, to help them transition back to the hearing world. “It helps people realize they are not alone, and it gives them a chance to talk with others going through the same thing,” Crippin said. “We also invite the families to come, to help them re-build communication strategies together, since the individual may have become more isolated due to the hearing loss.” Crippin said today’s digital hearing devices have much better capabilities and are beginning to link up with other electronics. “A lot of them have Bluetooth wireless technology, sort of like a headset for your phone, so they can stream music or pair up with a TV,” he said. Many public venues now

offer hearing loops, devices that transmit audio signals directly to a user’s hearing device. Learn more about hearing loss, hearing devices, and how Hearing Associates can help at www.hearingassociatesmc.com. Hearing Associates Open: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm

CL Tel ★ Readers’ Choice: Internet Provider

I

t’s all about quality. It’s all about the experience. And pride in a job well done. That’s what drives CL Tel. Since its founding, CL Tel has endeavored to serve the area with technology that makes all of our lives easier. “We want North Iowa communities and their businesses to thrive,” said CL Tel General Manager Tom Lovell said. “We’re firm believers that our region deserves at least the same advanced technology as any urban area. By offering the latest technologies, supported by our team’s local responsiveness, we strive to exceed the service offered in a metro area.” High speed Internet helps eliminate perceived geographic barriers that some may have about living in smaller cities. “It’s the best of both worlds - being able to live in North Iowa with this quality of life but also have access to metro quality services,” Lovell said. CL Tel was first in the area to offer Gigabit Internet speeds – 100 times faster than the average Internet connection – in December 2015. CL Tel also was one of the early fiber optics providers, installing its first fiber

optical network in 1989 to connect all long distance calls to Iowa Network Services in Des Moines. Fiber optics provide the broadband infrastructure that is essential to North Iowa’s economic success,” Lovell said. It’s a far more secure connection with virtually unlimited capacity for data, voice, and video services, particularly when compared to cellular, wireless, and cable services. In addition to the latest technology, CL Tel staff provide the expertise for robust customer service. “While competitors try to cut costs, we’re all about boots on the ground to help our customers,” Lovell said. “Our people provide a great combination of long-time expertise and fresh innovation to meet our changing customer needs.” In 2017, CL Tel was awarded the national Smart Rural Community Showcase Award by the NTCA for providing advanced communications services that have helped “drive economic and community strength” in several North Iowa communities. NTCA – the Rural Broadband Association – cited CL Tel’s deployment of advanced broadband technologies and collaboration with local

leaders as keys to helping communities be “vibrant places in which to live and do business.” The technology has been leveraged to enable innovation in the areas of economic development and commerce, education, agriculture, health care, government services, security and energy use. Broadband, or high-speed Internet data services, is now a key requirement used by site selectors in the very competitive landscape of industrial recruitment. CL Tel’s fiber infrastructure has been instrumental in recruiting and maintaining numerous major Clear Lake businesses. Plus, requests by several large Mason City employers led CL Tel’s subsidiary, SkyBlue Solutions, to build a fiber network in Mason City’s industrial park and later in downtown Mason City. As homeowners use more devices such as iPads, cell phones and “stream” their shows real-time over the Internet, they need faster speeds and more capacity. The Broadbandpowered Smart Home technology enables summer residents and “snowbirds” to check on their Clear Lake homes while they are wintering elsewhere.

CL Tel is a full service high speed Internet, security, phone and digital TV in Clear Lake and Ventura. Subsidiary SkyBlue Solutions provides advanced communications services to businesses in Mason City and other North Iowa communities. Advanced communications services and network redundancy are managed by a 24/7/365 Network Operations Center and backed by local support.

Fareway ★ Readers’ Choice: Grocery Store

T

he managers of Fareway Stores in Mason City and Clear Lake want to thank customers for voting Fareway the best Grocery Store and Place to Buy Meat in the Globe Gazette Readers’ Choice awards. “We’re all quite honored,” said Darren Miculinich, grocery manager at the Mason City store. Rod Bernard is grocery manager at Clear Lake. The meat counters have their own managers, Adam Jeppeson at Mason City and Ryan Fassbender in Clear Lake. “I think it has a lot to do with our low prices, our to-the-car service, and the fresh cut-toorder meat case,” Miculinich said. “We now carry fresh never-frozen fish.” Like all Fareway stores, Mason City and Clear Lake locations offer the full-service butcher counter. Fareway market experts make the experience by providing made-to-order, fresh cuts of meat for customers daily. The expansion of fresh seafood and artisan cheeses provide more options than ever before. Each package at the meat counter is individually handled and wrapped to customer specifications. The Mason City Fareway has been around

since 1949, and the Clear Lake store opened in 1970. But the Fareway chain goes back even further. The first Fareway Store opened in Boone, Iowa, in 1938. Its concept of a self-serve grocery store was considered revolutionary, according to the company web site. Before that, most stores required shoppers to submit a list to a clerk who would find and package their items. The chain now includes more than 121 stores in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota, and is one of the largest employers in Iowa. Fareway’s mission includes treating customers like family and taking pride in remarkably clean stores, personalized meat counter and carryout service, efficient shopping, and low, competitive prices. In addition, the company values its dedicated employees and works to support and partner with local businesses, communities, and farmers. A defining feature of Fareway is that the stores are closed on Sunday, which Miculinich said is intended to set aside time for family. According to the web site, “Fareway’s policy

Place to Buy Meat

of being closed on Sunday has been in place for as long as our company has been in existence. We believe our customers, employees, and business partners deserve a day at home with their families - free from the fast-paced life we all live the other six days of the week.” Fareway contributes to the communities its employees live in and serve by donating both time and resources to local charitable organizations. Reinvesting in local communities and encouraging economic and community development is an important piece of Fareway’s history and future. The company also cares about using eco-friendly practices and currently reclaims and reuses heat generated by stores’ refrigeration compressors. Each year, more than 12,500 tons of cardboard, 400 tons of

plastic shrink wrap, and 4.5 million plastic grocery sacks are recycled. Miculinich said the stores are getting a new look, with a fresh update and exciting new features coming soon.

Country Meadow Place ★ Readers’ Choice: Assisted Living

C

ountry Meadow Place, the 2018 Readers’ Choice for Assisted Living in North Iowa, is growing. The Mason City retirement community, specializing in care for those with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, has announced the construction of a $3.9 million addition to the existing 36 apartment community. The over 21,000 square foot addition will include 20 Assisted Living apartments and a variety of useful common areas to meet North Iowa demand. The community is located at 17396 Kingbird Avenue on the west edge of Mason City, in a country-like setting where the Old County Home used to sit. “We are at 100 percent occupancy now and working off a wait list. We saw the need for more senior living opportunities in North Iowa,” said Kim Boyd, manager since October 2014. The addition starting this spring will add 1and 2-bedroom apartments and common areas for residents who want assisted or independent living. Country Meadow Place currently offers 1-bedroom and studio apartments for assisted living and memory care in a completely secure community, providing safety for residents. Since completing an extensive remodeling project to the existing building, Country Meadow Place has established itself as a leader in providing Memory Care to North Iowa seniors over the past few years. “It’s a great honor that the area voted us as best of the best,” Boyd said. “We also were awarded ‘Best Assisted Living in North Iowa’ by SeniorAdvisor.com. Our residents and families really love it here. It’s homelike, and we pay attention to their needs. It’s all about quality of life and giving them purpose and meaning. We roll out the red carpet for our residents.” One of the advantages of living there is the blend of assisted living with memory care, so couples can live together in an apartment. “We can have one person with dementia and their spouse who only needs assisted living,” said Boyd. “In many places, they would have to live separately on different floors.” Specially trained memory care staff is available 24 hours a day. Residents receive monitoring by a Registered Nurse and participate in stimulating planned or spontaneous activities. The community finds many ways to show individual attention to their residents. The Dare to Dream program focuses on helping someone realize an unfulfilled dream. For instance, Boyd said they recently worked with the Surf Ballroom to help a woman fulfill her dream of singing on a stage. “Smile” was launched to enhance communication between the families of residents and the staff. This Internet-based program

gives families access to their loved one’s daily activities and allows staff to securely send positive messages, pictures, or videos to families. It also provides a way for families to talk to caregivers or send messages to share with the resident. For instance, Boyd said the Life Enrichment Coordinator might take pictures of a resident engaged in a meaningful activity, to share on Smile. “A resident’s family may call and ask them what they did today, but the person might not remember. This way their family can see the activities they participated in that day,” she explained. The new addition will have a new exercise room. Live 2 B Healthy offers senior exercise with a certified instructor, and staff from Athletico Physical Therapy comes twice a week to lead exercise. The community also offers massage therapy and music therapy. There is a spa room, featuring a big tub, hot towels, dim lighting, and music to foster comfort and relaxation. Weekly salon hours are available. “We have a full-size bus and a van for everything from outings to doctor’s appointments,” Boyd said. “It might be visiting regional sites like the Little Brown Church or just driving around Clear Lake on a nice day and stopping for ice cream.” Residents rent their apartments and bring their own furnishings to make it like home. They receive three home-cooked meals and snacks; laundry and housekeeping; life enrichment opportunities; 24-hour call pendant; and use of the building amenities. Boyd noted that the community can offer quite a bit more through individual service plans, depending on the person’s needs. The new addition will be attached to the existing building, so those residents can come

over to take part in activities. Once the new addition is open, residents in independent or assisted living will rent apartments by the month. They can choose to customize services to meet their needs, like opting to receive fewer meals or adding on assistance, like having staff manage their medications or assist with showers, according to Boyd. The new apartments will be larger and include a full-size refrigerator and microwave. The addition will include a new dining room, common area lounge, private dining/library, exercise area, and more.

A core philosophy of Country Meadow Place is “Embracing Every Moment.” Boyd said it’s about “finding that sparkle in every day and making memories matter.” She and her staff are grateful for the vote of confidence from North Iowa. “Residents and family are often thanking us for what we do,” Boyd said. “It gives us pause. When they say thank you, it kind of hits the heart.” Country Meadow Place is currently taking reservations for the new addition. Contact Kim Boyd at 641-423-7722 or manager@ countrymeadowplace.com for questions.

State Farm Insurance ★ Readers’ Choice: Insurance Agency

S

tate Farm Insurance has been honored for several years as the best insurance agency in Readers’ Choice voting. “As I celebrate 25 years with State Farm in May, I realize how fortunate I am to work for a com-pany that not only values its agents and employees, but also truly cares about its customers,” said Kristy Marquis, a State Farm agent based in Mason City. “This past year State Farm teamed up with more than 7,000 charitable groups across the country to connect volunteers with opportunities to serve right in their own communities through the www.neighborhoodofgood.com site,” Marquis said. “Our business is built on the idea of helping people, so this is just a natural extension of that, and one I’m very proud of. If we all do a little, we can make a huge impact in our communities!” Clint Thomas, also a Mason City agent for State Farm, recently celebrated his 21-year anniver-sary with the company. This was Clint’s first job out of college, and he hopes it will be his last as well. “I love making an impact on client’s lives,” Clint said. “We aren’t the number one choice of cli-ents in North Iowa because of our price. When you become a client with us, you get much more than just an insurance policy.” Clint said State Farm’s public information message about texting while driving is making a dif-ference. “We are really proud of our ‘X the text’ radio campaign. I really feel like my message is being heard around North Iowa and making an impact on people’s lives. I’ve had

numerous comments, letters, and stories from clients and others in the community that have either written or called me to let me know the impact this is having on them or someone else in their lives.” “It’s such a privilege to be recognized as the best,” said State Farm agent Tim Ihlenfeldt. “The role of an insurance professional is no longer just about providing information, but about helping consumers weed through information, to help identify needs and provide solutions. We’re here to help through all life’s moments by providing insights and advice to assist as your life unfolds.” The Ihlenfeldt Agency rescued an old church building in Mason City. It now has been restored to serve as a beautiful office. Tim Ihlenfeldt has over 20 years agency experience. The Ihlenfeldt Agency includes Courtny Beals, Office Manager, and Steven Cooper, Insurance and Bank Rep-resentative. Kim Ruter represents State Farm at her office in Clear Lake. “State Farm has a culture that is about giving back to their customers and community. We, as agents, are united to support each other on this fundamental principle through our professionalism, respect, and building relation-ships on a daily basis,” Kim said. “To be given this award again, lines up with one of the many great philosophies of State Farm and makes us all very grateful for this achievement. On behalf of State Farm and the local agents, thank you again for making us #1!”

It began in 1930 as the story of two men and one gigantic leap of faith… When Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened their first store in Beaconsfield, Iowa in 1930, the Great Depression was just taking hold. But they had faith in themselves, faith in each other, and faith in the fundamental principles that guided their business – friendliness, helpfulness, honesty, dedication and respect. Hy-Vee of Mason City first opened its doors on April 28, 1965. Now over 50 years later, we’ve grown from a single store to 3 large stores, and those fundamental principles Hyde and Vredenburg believed so strongly in, still guide the way Hy-Vee does business today. Held the first weekend of December, Saturday’s events include horse-drawn carriage and Main Street Trolley rides, craft show, crowning of prince and princess, petting zoo and pony rides, s’mores for kids, Christmas Karaoke, entertainment at the Arts Center, visits with Santa, matinee at the Lake Theatre, strolling Dickens characters, lighted parade and fireworks over the lake. Visit clearlakeiowa.com to find out about the continuing activities that make the town famous as an event capital. This spring, the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 75th anniversary with a gala on May 4 at the Surf Ballroom. This special event will honor former directors and ten charter members that are still members today. The TRI Clear Lake sprint triathlon returns for its second year on Saturday, June 9. This year the event will also be an official paraathletes competition, according to Trish Fundermann, Special Projects Director at the Chamber of Commerce. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT). The route includes a 750 meter swim, 12.4 mile bike portion, and 3.1 mile run. The TRI is open to individuals open to the challenge of all three or teams wanting to split up the segments. For more information, visit triclearlakeia.com. Throughout the summer, don’t forget hang-

ookies Rockin’ Sports Bar, a popular gathering place on Clear Lake’s Main Avenue, swept six categories in this year’s Readers’ Choice voting. North Iowans said Rookies is the best for an all-around night out, specifically in these areas: Bar/Lounge to Socialize, Friendliest Bar Staff, Happy Hour, Place to Shoot Pool, Bar Burger, and Place to Meet Singles. “We’re really happy about that,” said Al Hejna, who owns Rookies and Sevens Restaurant with his brother Mike. The Bar Burger category is a new category high for Rookies. “We’ve got seven specialties plus the regular Bacon Cheeseburger. They’re all awesome and very popular, with distinctly different tastes, like Buffalo Bacon Blue Cheese Burger and Ragin Cagin.” New this year are four brand new Diamond pool tables. Happy Hour features $1 specials from 4 to 6 p.m. and 50-cent chicken wings. DJ’s play music on Friday and Saturday nights. Rookies late-night

crowd is a favorite spot for people looking to meet singles. “We’re proud to say in 23 years there has never been a cover charge at Rookies,” he said. Hejna said this year they are planning to offer the Country Bar upstairs on a more consistent basis. On select Saturday nights, Rookies has been playing country music and videos on the second floor, but they are gearing up staff to be able to offer it every week. “Between Rookies and the neighboring Sevens, that share a kitchen, we have 30 to 35 employees, and the kitchen is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.” Watch in the coming year for a new business a few doors away on Main Avenue. Al said they recently bought the former Bikers Bar and are remodeling. With a name to be determined later, the new spot will offer a new and different destination in downtown Clear Lake.

F

or the first time, Sevens Restaurant took Readers’ Choice top honors as the best place to have breakfast in North Iowa. Al Hejna, who owns Sevens and adjoining Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar with his brother Mike, attributes a lot of that to their locally-known breakfast cook, Marsha Walker Potter. “She cooked breakfast in Mason City for years,” Al said, at places like the Sidewinder. “When we opened Sevens in 2009, I wondered where she was, and three days later she came in to apply for a job. I said, ‘Get in here!’ ” Marsha cooks breakfast six days a week at the restaurant, from 6:30 to 11 a.m. Al said Robert Vysocky, Jake Jensen, and crew do an “awesome job” from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sundays, the most popular breakfast day of the week. The breakfast menu includes all the favorites made to order, including omelettes, hash browns, eggs Benedict, pancakes, and more. Sevens also serves lunch seven days a week and dinner on Tuesdays through Saturdays.

N

orth Iowa’s favorite place to buy home décor is Real Deals on Home Décor and Boutique at 23 5th St SW in Mason City. That’s what voters said in the Globe Gazette Reader’s Choice awards in 2018. Real Deals is a locally owned family run business. “My daughter and I opened the store six years ago,” said Lisa O’Tool. She manages the home décor end of things, while Danielle manages the clothing boutique. Her son, Ryan, is currently helping with the online boutique clothing sales platform. New décor and clothing arrives weekly. Lisa said “It’s fun unpacking new décor and changing up the displays every week. There’s always something new to look at.” “Our customers tell us we have unique things they can’t find in other stores,” said Lisa. “We bring in what’s trending, as well as, carry seasonal and basic decorating styles.” Real Deals offers farmhouse decorating style that has been popular recently, and now she is seeing more call for mid-century modern designs. A few of the home décor items you will find at Real Deals include wall art, lanterns, lamps, distressed wood furniture, succulents/florals

Rib Crib ★ Readers’ Choice: Ribs

F

or several years running, Rib Crib in Mason City has been voted Readers’ Choice for Ribs. “We cook our ribs fresh twice a day,” said Stan Schultz, manager and co-owner with his father. “They are smoked in-house with hickory wood.” The pork ribs are offered in St. Louis style and baby-back cut. Rib Crib features all-you-caneat ribs on Tuesdays from 4 to close. The restaurant is not just about ribs, Schultz said. The menu includes salads, burgers, wings, chicken wraps, and more. Lunch combos on weekdays includes two meats and one side dish. The restaurant at 455 Tiffany Drive has been serving North Iowans for 12 years. It also provides catering for all types of events. Rib Crib also received Honorable Mention in Readers’ Choice voting for BBQ, Birthday Party for Adults, and Wings.

Because their ribs take so long to prepare and are so popular, they sometimes run out, according to Schultz. “We smoke brisket and pork every 12 hours,” he said. “We take them off the smoker twice a day, so it’s always fresh at lunch and dinner. So get it while you can!”

oulder Tap House won 2018 Readers’ Choice top votes for Hamburger, Best Selection of Beer at a Bar, Variety of Appetizers, and Most Tip Worthy. That pretty much covers their slogan, “Burgers, beer, wings, and friends - the way it should be. Thanking customers for their endorsement, Tom Mason, general manager, said, “It’s a family-owned business based out of St. Cloud, MN. They like the community here. We try to keep everything as local as we can, with vendors. The company owns 40 restaurants, but Ma-

son City was the first one opened in Iowa two years ago. A second Boulder Tap House now is in Ames. The restaurant here employs about 65 people. He described the Boulder Tap House atmosphere as “a sports bar, but family-friendly. “We specialize in craft beer and craft burgers, Mason said. “We have have the best selection of beer, with the most wide variety to hit all the preferences of our customers. On our hamburgers, we try for unique combinations, not just the ordinary. And service is a top priority. We make sure we’re talking to guests and make them feel like regulars.

Woodford Lumber ★ Readers’ Choice: Paint/Wallpaper

“P

aint like no other.” That’s why Benjamin Moore customers are so loyal. Once they use it, others pale in comparison. “We have customers who will drive 30-40 miles regularly to get their Benjamin Moore paint here,” said Woodford Lumber and Home Manager Darle Hoshaw. Because Woodford Lumber and Home attained Benjamin Moore Signature Store status, customers enjoy an unparalleled retail experience. Unlike the big box stores, trained color consultants provide personalized, unrushed service to help each customer find the right paint and color for their project. Computerized color matching software and paint tinting ensures that customers can also match existing paint colors. “We partnered with Benjamin Moore paint because of its outstanding reputation for superior quality and performance,” said Woodford Lumber and Home Manager Darle Hoshaw. “This is the paint that professional painters, architects and interior designers recommend because of the vibrant colors, extraordinary application and longevity. And do-it-yourselfers also like Benjamin Moore paints because of its ‘one coat will do it’ characteristic,” Hoshaw said. Benjamin Moore paint was selected in 2011 because the company’s long-standing tradition of

excellence and innovation for the customer was a great fit with Woodford Lumber and Home. The retail store was remodeled to provide a welcoming environment and to attain the only Benjamin Moore signature store status in North Iowa. Benjamin Moore has consistently ranked at the top in national customer satisfaction paint surveys conducted by J.D. Powers, a global information services company. Founded in 1883, it is one of the country’s leading manufacturers of premium quality residential, commercial and industrial paints and other coatings. Benjamin Moore was one of the pioneers in producing eco-friendly paint with its zero-VOC Natura paint. “We’re proud to say that it is family-friendly,” Hoshaw said. Benjamin Moore is only available at independently owned stores. Woodford Lumber and Home, located at 210 North 4th Street in downtown Clear Lake, is a full service lumberyard and retail center with name brand windows, cabinets, countertops, doors, hardware, decking materials, millwork and paint. Experienced staff design new construction or remodeling plans. A cabinetry showroom and the signature paint store area help customers envision their home improvement dreams.

Many of the newer vehicles are going to aluminum sheet metal and box sides, which requires us to use special riveters and welders to repair your vehicle back to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) specifications. Ryan added,“This gives us the ability to work on virtually any vehicle and any type of material,” Hawkeye also has the equipment and training to weld almost any type of plastic that is and vehicles today. The Knoll family has built the shop’s reputation on commitment to their customers. They understand the frustration and vulnerability associated with the repair process, according to Jerry. “Our goal is to not only restore your vehicle back to manufacturer’s specifications, but also your piece of mind that it has been repaired properly. We are committed to getting you back to your normal routine safely, and as quickly as possible. e would like to thank our patients for voting for Central Park Dentistry as 2018 Reader’s Choice Dentist. Our whole team is humbled by your loyalty, and excited to be honored with this award now for several years in a row! We see this award as validation of our outstanding customer service, solid community involvement, and excellent patient care. At Central Park Dentistry, the positive energy is palpable as soon as you walk in the door. Our team is eager to assist you with your needs! We are always welcoming new patients, young and old. Our loyal patients will tell you that all of our doctors and staff develop connected relationships with each patient. Our patients also enjoy the fun-filled atmosphere in our office. The customer service at Central Park Dentistry is second to none! We realize dental care can be stressful for many reasons. Our clinical team and doctors work to get to know you, your dental history and how we can improve your health and experience. For many patients, it can be using proven techniques to reduce anxiety. For others, they desire to be more

educated in their personal care and choices. Our front office team is trained to help you understand your insurance benefits and how you can utilize them. Everyone at Central Park Dentistry strives to be an educator and advocate for patients to understand the benefits of great oral health! All the children had a fun presentation and received a bag of personal hygiene items. We participate actively in local causes by attending, donating, and volunteering. Our doctors have been active in the North Iowa Free Dental Clinic. We provide a great mix of modern technology and treatment, along with time-proven techniques. In office, we now have the ability to make 3D xrays of the teeth and jaw, when needed, for a more exact diagnosis. Dr. Lala can use this to remove impacted wisdom teeth with precision. We all use 3D technology to aid treatment especially root canal therapy. We use an ITERO digital scanner for the doctors to create 3D models of the patient’s teeth and

bite. Digital scanning eliminates impressions, making the treatment easier, faster and more accurate. Dr, Hansen can use the ITERO to educate patients on their personal bite issues and the outcome of future Invisalign treatment in a matter of minutes. Drs. Lala and Hansen use these technologies to provide dental implants to patients who need missing teeth replaced. Dr. Jennifer Thackery joined us 3 years ago and has been a “perfect fit”. Dr. Thackery is skilled in utilizing technology and creating comprehensive treatment plans. Most importantly, she’s able to communicate treatment options in a way people trust. We had exciting new changes at Central Park Dentistry this year! We opened an office in Sheffield, a solid community that we are thrilled to become a part of. All our doctors see patients here too, for your convenience. We had two home grown doctors join our team this year. We are proud to have Dr. Patrick Kolker of Clear Lake and Dr. Brianna Brayton of Meservey. Both have trained at the University of Iowa and come highly recommended by University Faculty. Furniture Mattress Outlet ★ Readers’ Choice: Furniture

F

urniture Mattress Outlet, known for offering quality furniture and mattresses at affordable prices, took First Place honors in Readers’ Choice Awards again this year. Owner Tim Latham said he’s grateful that North Iowa continues to choose the store as the best place to buy furniture. “We’ve got a large store, about 25,000 square feet, but I think the reason people like us is the guys work really hard at customer service and there is no high pressure to buy,” he said. The locally-owned store continues to add more selection, and Latham said there is an ever-increasing variety of fabrics customers can choose from. Latham said, “We want to thank everyone for helping us to continue to serve them with great furniture and prices.” The Mason City store at 506 4th Street SW opened in 2002. Latham said, “We took an old building and over the years remodeled it. And made it one of the nicer-looking buildings in the area. It has that old warehouse look and feeling.” The strong sales staff at Furniture Mattress Outlet is what keeps the store popular with

Mattress/Bed Store

customers, according to Latham. The sales employees are paid by salary and do not work on commission. “Plus, eventually they’re going to own the store, so they have a strong desire to make things work,” he said. “They go way above, they know the product, and they don’t have to worry about commission. That makes a lot of difference. They take interest in all customers, not just those that purchase furniture.” Randy Klemesrud has worked with Latham for 36 years, starting at the former Latham Furniture, and the rest of the employees are relatives of Klemesrud. That includes his son Jack, and Jack’s brothers-in-law Ryan and Dan. The store offers free delivery and financing to customers. “We not only deliver, we bring it in and set it up for you, and we service what we sell,” Latham said. Furniture Mattress Outlet carries nearly 30 brands of living room, dining room, home office, and bedroom furniture, such as Ashley, Lane, England, Broyhill, Best, Coaster, and more. Mattress companies include Symbol, Spring Air, and Englander. The store also offers a full line of accessories for every room.

North Central Mechanical Services

SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2018

“Where a good time is had by all”

★ Readers’ Choice: Heating & Cooling

N

orth Central Mechanical Services continues to be North Iowa’s top choice for heating and cooling services, according to voters in the 2018 Readers’ Choice awards. “Winning the award is a honor, and we definitely appreciate the local support,” said Brian Miller, Business Development/Estimator. “We will continue to do everything we can to maintain our high level of support service and quick response times. We have a great team here at North Central Mechanical Services, and awards like this are the direct result of that team’s effectiveness.” The Mason City business, owned by Nathan Bartels, provides heating and cooling services for residential and commercial settings. Bartels started the company in 2010 out of his home. North Central Mechanical Services has moved twice since then to accommodate the growth in business. Now at 2601 15th Street SW, the company employs 15 people. “In the past year, we’ve hired more employees to better cover Mason City and the surrounding areas,” Miller said. “If you call for an estimate, I can usually be

there the same day to give you a price. We also have 24-hour service, so there’s always someone to take care of you.” In addition to heating and cooling systems, the business does plumbing, geothermal systems, backflow testing, duct cleaning, ventilation, boiler systems, sheet metal fabrication, and more. “Duct cleaning has been a big hit lately,” Miller said. “If you have allergies or own dogs or cats, it’s a good idea to clean out the ducts in your house to keep the air clean. Most houses have never had their ducts cleaned. Miller and Bartels sit on the heating and air conditioning advisory board at North Iowa Area Community College. “We offer internships and apprenticeships. We’re always hiring,” Miller said. “We have recently hired NIACC HVAC graduates and have two current students going through the intern program. We work around their classes, and they receive great in-the-field training. The hope is if they decide to stay close to home, we’ll have them as employees eventually.”

Be Inspired. The Globe Gazette is proud to bring North Iowa the Up in Smoke BBQ Bash each July. Since 2004, the Globe Gazette has done more than fun and food – it has helped raise funds for the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, North Iowa Youth Center and many more nonprofits. Thanks to the BBQ Bash competitors, thousands of meals have been served at the community Kitchen.
