Star Class 2019 Recognizing North Iowa’s best students
E
ach year, about 200 student-athletes from area high schools are recognized for their excellence in the classroom and on the athletic fields. Now in its 24th year, the Star Class event recognizes North Iowa’s best and brightest students. Starting out as a ceremony to honor student-athletes, Star Class evolved over the years to also include and recognize high academic achievements by the most promising graduating high school seniors from 26 area high schools. Each year, faculty, administrators and athletic directors from each high school in the Globe Gazette’s coverage area select their top senior students who excel in one of seven categories: mathematics, social sciences, arts, science, music, language and technical education. They also are asked to choose their top male and female athletes.
On Sunday, May 5, we pay tribute to the excellence of the more than 200 students who are featured in this special section of the Globe Gazette and who will gather at the North Iowa Community Auditorium on the campus of North Iowa Area Community College. Each year during this event, we feel confident that these students with so much potential will be our next business executives and doctors, teachers and scientists, legislators and lawyers. And some could land in positions that haven’t even been created yet in this ever-evolving world. Special recognition also will be given to our Partners in Education Money to Learn Scholarship winners. The two Money to Learn Scholarship winners each will be awarded $500 to continue their educational pursuits at North Iowa Area Community College. Star Class is made possible by the Globe Gazette and NIACC.
For 24 years, it’s been an annual event to honor North Iowa’s best students. Each year, faculty, administrators and athletic directors from each high school in the Globe Gazette’s coverage area select seniors to be honored in seven categories.

at North Iowa Area Community College. Awards are based on a required essay themed, “Why I think it’s important to further my education.” Adams said in her application that she plans help pursue a career as a
therapist/counselor after college because a guidance counselor helped her through hard times when her parents were going through a divorce when she was in elementary school. “I would like to think that everybody’s essential goal is to help, whether it is conscious or unconscious,” Adams said. “I have known for most of my life that I want to be a therapist/ counselor. “I had a counselor who helped me tremendously in healing from my parents’ divorce. She helped
me grow and learn from the situation in a healthy and beneficial way. I am inspired to help others like she helped me.” Adams hopes to have a broad range of counseling skills, and would like to help with multiple kinds of therapy such as marriage, mental health, child counseling and more if possible. “My calling has always been to be a therapist,” she said. “This scholarship could help me do this.” For Armour, perseverance isn’t a word used
lightly. The senior at Newman Catholic said in his essay that he overcame obstacles in his life to get where he is today, including being born with cleft palate. As a young child, Armour said he traveled to Iowa City many times to receive treatment, including having his cleft palate surgically repaired. That experience has left an indelible impression on the young man and he has plotted his life’s course because of it. “The kindness of these
doctors and their drive to help others inspired me to want to become a doctor,” Armour said. “This goal has remained with me throughout my middle and high school years.” Armour said in his essay that the long road to becoming a doctor begins with attending college. “By attending college and furthering my education, I will be able to help others in the same way that doctors helped me,” said Armour, who hopes to become a neurologist or emergency physician.

Memo to my 18-year-old self
Schulz: Be proud of your achievements
H
I
indsight is 20-20, the saying goes, and I don’t think it’s more true than when I start thinking about my years after high school. I look back at my late teens/early 20s with a great deal of fondness, a little bit of laughter JACI SMITH and a sigh of relief. Maybe a few regrets, too. Star Class of 2019, not everyone’s experience is the same, but in the hopes that my rearview mirror offers a glint or two of enlightenment, here is a letter I would’ve sent to my younger self. Dear Jaci, Congratulations! You are just weeks away from starting the next big adventure that is adulthood. You are in for a wild ride, girl, so hold on. I know that for every time you rejoice in leaving high school behind, you’re also freaking out a little bit. You just spent the last four years touring colleges, grooming your GPA and trying to decide what you want to be when you grow up. And you know, though you don’t really want to admit it to the world, that you don’t have it all figured out yet. That’s OK.
The only expectations that matter are your own. Don’t worry about whether you’re taking on a major that will allow you to live comfortably or if future employers will frown at that poetry writing class you took or that your parents will be upset if you change your major again – or even drop out. In the end, you learn to live within your means (and love Ramen noodles), most employers care more about internships than GPAs and throughout your life you’ll encounter plenty of successful and happy people who didn’t spend a day in college. Focus on the now. Stay in the moment. These are pretty interesting times you’re living in. That said … Don’t be stupid. You’re going to go to a party at a frat on University Avenue. There is going to be a lot of people there. It will be unlike anything you’ve ever done before, a whole new level of fun. But stick to the beer in the keg and, when that guy approaches you and invites you to his room, trust your gut. Your parents raised you well. But don’t let your fear stop you, either. Take that poetry writing class; turns out, you enjoy writing in a journal and you’ll meet someone in that class who’ll introduce you to someone else in a posi-
tion to get you an internship later on. Don’t pass up the study abroad semester because you’re in a relationship. If he really loves you, he’ll stick around. Don’t skip the audition your high school band teacher got you for the marching band because you don’t think you are good enough. The only sure thing is that there is no sure thing. It will take some years, but eventually you will realize that all those things that you are over analyzing now don’t really matter too much. And the things you tend to take for granted will take on new importance. Remember, we make plans and God laughs. Here’s what does matter: Family, friends, hard work, love. Make new connections whenever you can, but stay true to those who hold the same values as you. Expect to get out of life exactly what you put in – no more, no less. No one in this world owes you a thing, including your family. And for Pete’s sake, call your mom; she’s thinking about you way more than you’re thinking about her and she’s worrying enough for both of you. Love, Jaci Jaci Smith is the editor of the Globe Gazette. Follow her on Twitter at @IowaJaci.
t is my pleasure to congratulate you on being recognized as a member of the Star Class of 2019. I commend you on your hard work and commitment to excellence that has earned STEVEN you this SCHULZ well-deserved recognition. NIACC is proud to be a sponsor of the Star Class program that recognizes the “best of the best” among North Iowa’s high school seniors. You should be proud of your accomplishments, but you should be even more proud of the fact that you were nominated by a teacher, administrator, or athletic director to represent your high school as a Star Class honoree.
As a former K-12 teacher, principal and superintendent, I know how important it is to recognize the outstanding students who serve as role models for younger students. You have not only been recognized for individual achievement, but as a distinguished young person worthy of representing your school and community in the form of this public recognition. I encourage you to take this opportunity to reflect on your school experience and thank the teacher, coach, or administrator who made a difference in your life and contributed to your success in school. Oh, and don’t forget to thank your parents. You are being recognized for your individual accomplishments, but it would be an oversight to not recognize the role your parents have played in your
success. You are fortunate to have parents that value education and hard work, and they have set high expectations for you in school and in life. So, take time over the next few weeks to celebrate your good work and this Star Class of 2019 recognition. Revisit your school experiences with friends, reflect on your life, your future, and take a few minutes to thank those who have helped you along the way. We at North Iowa Area Community College would welcome the opportunity to serve the “best of the best” as you plan for the next steps in your educational career. Please do not hesitate to contact NIACC if we can assist in any way. Steven Schulz is president of North Iowa Area Community College. He can be reached at 641-422-4000.
