PROUD TO BE NAMED READER’S CHOICE FOR

READER’S CHOICE: BILLIARDS/POOL BAR SPORTS BAR

Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar & Grill For the first time ever, Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar & Grill in Clear Lake has placed first in the Readers Choice competition for the best spots bar in North Iowa. Al Henja, who co-owns the establishment at 307 Main Ave. with his brother Mike, said this is a big honor due to the large number of great sports bars in the region. Rookies subscribes to the NFL Sunday Ticket, college football, NCAA, NBA and MLB TV packages and has 16 bigscreen TVs, meaning patrons can watch almost any televised sporting event they want. The full sports bar menu includes burgers, sandwiches, wings and appetizers. Rookies, which opened in 1995, also boasts four Diamond pool tables, which are “the premier table to play on,” Henja said. Other popular features are a party room and a DJ. Patrons can hear music and watch music videos. Rookies is the late-night place to be for the younger crowd, according to Henja. “We are pretty busy on weekends,” he said. In 2009 the Henja brothers opened Sevens Restaurant & Steakhouse, which is located adjacent to Rookies. The restaurant and bar are connected so guests can pass from one to the other easily. Sevens, which offers a casual dining experience, has a full breakfast menu that includes omelets, pancakes, French toast, and biscuits and gravy. The lunch menu features burgers and daily specials, while the dinner menu includes steak, seafood, pasta and more. Like other bars and restaurants, Rookies and Sevens had to shut down in midMarch because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Henja brothers took advantage of the time by remodeling.

READERS’ CHOICE: WINDOWS

Window World

Window World is an exterior remodeling company with 200 locations all over the United States, including one in Mason City, but they all have a hometown feel. “We are part of the community,” said Katy Showalter, the owner of the Mason City location. The store backs local events, particularly those involving kids, she said. The store opened in 2007, but the original owner was from Omaha and wasn’t able to travel to Mason City much, according to Showalter. She said that’s why he sold it to her in 2011. Window World is celebrating its 25th anniversary as a company this year. The company started with just “a strong work ethic and a commitment to providing a superior product installed by expert craftsmen with excellent customer service,” Showalter said. It all began when the Window World founder, Leon Whitworth, opened a road-

side stand in North Carolina to sell windows “He wanted to have a fair price and make a fair living,” Showalter said. Since then Window World has grown from just offering double-hung windows to six different styles in a variety of colors. The company is now more just windows. Its stores offer patio doors, entry doors, storm doors, siding and roofing. The Window World tagline is now “America’s Exterior Remodeling.” “If it’s on the outside of the house, we

can do it,” Showalter said. The Mason City Window World location, which draws customers from North Iowa and southern Minnesota, has a showroom, but Showalter said it’s “not a big box store” where customers buy things off the shelves. Everything from Window World is custom ordered and custom built, according to Showalter. The 17 employees at the Mason City location include installers who come to customers’ homes before they order. They

also can take the old windows and dispose of them when the job is completed, Showalter said. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Windows World is encouraging clients who aren’t comfortable with having someone come into their home for a consultation to opt for a virtual consultation over video chat instead. Visit https://www.windowworldmc. com/ for more information about the Mason City location.

The entire ATURA team is invested both personally and professionally in our local communities and hope that both our design and personal involvement help to change and enhance life in North Iowa,” Austin Pehl, Business Development Manager ATURA is a full-service design firm that started in 1923 by Karl Waggoner and Harry Hansen in Mason City. For 95 years the firm was located along Federal Avenue in what now is the Plaza. With nearly a century of work in North Iowa, we have been fortunate to work on some of the most iconic buildings in the area. In 2012 the firm became a subsidiary of Dean Snyder Construction. This

partnership has helped both companies better serve their clients through a collaborative approach to projects both big and small. From small home additions to award-winning dental offices, our firm has been striving to exceed the expectations of our clients. In 2018 we rebranded from WWA-Architects to ATURA (UH-TERUH) architecture which means “The Art of Construction.” Our new office is along Highway 18 in Clear Lake, adjacent to Dean Snyder Construction. Some of the notable projects in the area that we have had the privilege of working on in the last few years include: Clear Lake Wellness Center (’21), Iowa Regular Baptist Camp Gymnasium (‘21), Clear Lake Lions Athletic Field Complex, Waypoint Medical Clinic, Central Springs Auditorium, Clear Lake Preschool, Iowa Specialty Hospital-Garner Clinic, Osage Community School Gym & High School Expansion,

READERS’ CHOICE: CREDIT UNION

CENT Credit Union CENT Credit Union was voted the best credit union in North Iowa for the first time by readers of the Globe Gazette in this year’s Readers’ Choice. “We’re very proud of who we are, where we’re from, where we’ve been and where were going,” said President and CEO Matthew Chizek. “It’s because people believe in and support our mission that Every CENT Counts. “Five years ago, when I was interviewing for this opportunity, we weren’t in the position of the top 10 or even top 12 in the marketplace. But we’ve attracted high character and high energy team members to help develop the culture we want to achieve. We take great pride in this honor that people have voted on, because we consider ourselves the people’s champion.” As a credit union, CENT is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative that provides savings, credit, and other financial services to its members. Profit is returned to members in the

form of better rates. The business changed its name from MCLG Family Credit Union about four year ago to unify all the various smaller credit unions it had brought under one roof over time. CENT Credit Union membership is open to employees and their families from city, county, state, and federal government, healthcare affiliates, and many private industries in the area. “We bring change,” Chizek said. “It’s exciting change. It’s what makes progress. Five years ago, we had seven employees, and now it’s over 20. Based on the support, we’re able to create fun local positions in Mason City. We have a longstanding, proud history of organizations we support.” Five years ago, the business gave out one $500 scholarship as a community support effort. “In the past year, through volunteerism and donations, we’ve given $100,000

Giving of time shows extreme value. All of the money stays locally. We stand by local organizations because we are local.” And in turn, CENT’s support of members has grown.

“Last year we had nearly a 100 percent increase in return back to our membership in terms of rate of return through massive growth,” Chizek said. Chizek invites anyone who wants to be part of the change to check out CENT’s web site at CENTCU.org.

Midwest Construction For more than 60 years, family-owned Midwest Construction has stayed true to its slogan of “quality products, quality installation.” Alexander Despenas, who started the exterior remodeling business on South Federal Avenue in Mason City in 1958, formed relationships with manufacturers and arranged for factory-direct distribution. “We purchase directly from the manufacturer,” said his son, Paul Despenas, vice president of marketing for Midwest Construction. “There’s no middleman involved.” This gives the company the ability to sell the best products in siding, doors, replacement windows and sunrooms on the market today, Despenas said. Midwest Construction products include a full-service guarantee because they come directly from the factory. This means if you have a broken seal on your window, you can have it repaired in a timely fashion, according to Despenas. He said the company’s installers are “the

The company has grown tremendously since its start. In the 1980s Midwest Construction expanded to Des Moines, Iowa market. The Mason City offices and showroom are now located at 1601 S. Taft Ave. Despenas lives in the Des Moines area, but he and his siblings all grew up in Mason City. “Mason City has been good to us,” he said. “It’s our hometown.” Midwest Construction started out as a

siding company, but its inventory has expanded over the years. The company completes 550 to 575 jobs a year on average, and has worked on 30,000 homes in Iowa since it began. In both 1999 and 2015, Midwest Construction received the Better Business Bureau’s Integrity Award for fair and ethical practices. The company has also received awards from manufacturers for volume sold, design and Historic Restoration with vinyl

building products. Midwest Construction believes in giving back to the communities it serves, according to Despenas. He said the company donates both building materials and labor to Habitat for Humanity. “Midwest Construction would like to thank our past customers for their business,” Despenas said. We appreciate you.” Visit https://www.mwcinc.com/ for more information on Midwest Construction.

READERS’ CHOICE: AUDIOLOGY/EAR & HEARING

Hearing Associates Hearing loss is an invisible condition that has a phenomenal impact on the activities of daily living, said Stuart Trembath, owner and audiologist at Hearing Associates in Mason City. “It can be a huge barrier to enjoying conversation with other people. Our goal is to provide care as best we can for the patients, so they can overcome the obstacle that hearing loss provides for them,” he said. Alex Crippin, Director of Operations, said the team focuses on service. “People come to us not just because we are knowledgeable about hearing loss and hearing devices, but because we care,” Crippin said. “We’re here to help people hear better.” Hearing Associates opened 31 years ago in Mason City. Now with nine other locations in Iowa and Minnesota, the business has a long-standing referral relationship with the medical community, particularly the Mason City Clinic Ear-Nose-Throat

“People come to us not just because we are knowledgeable about hearing loss and hearing devices, but because we care. We’re here to help people hear better.” – Alex Crippin, director of operations (ENT) practice. Crippin said the audiologists at Hearing Associates all hold master’s or doctorate degrees. They use a wide variety of tests to detect hearing loss in patients of all ages. The staff can also evaluate balance issues and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Hearing loss is impacting Baby Boomers more than any previous generation, Trembath said. If needed, Hearing Associates help patients choose hearing devices from some

of the leading manufacturers in the industry. When a patient is fit with the correct hearing device, Hearing Associates offers classes for new users, to help them transition back to the hearing world. Trembath said today’s digital hearing devices have much better capabilities and are beginning to link up with other electronics. “A lot of them have Bluetooth wireless technology, sort of like a headset for your phone, so they can stream music or pair up with a TV,” he said. READERS’ CHOICE: BEST REAL ESTATE OFFICE

Jane Fischer & Associates The real estate consultants at Jane Fischer & Associates pride themselves on their excellent customer service. “I think people appreciate our work ethic,” said Fischer, the broker/owner. “We are there for them from start to finish, no matter their situation.” Those situations could include going through a divorce, losing a loved one, or trying to sell a home from a distance, according to Fischer. Help is available to clients seven days a week, including evenings, she said. Jane Fischer & Associates launched in January 2018. Fischer has been in the real estate business since 1992. She spent her first nine years with John Busch and the next 17 with Century 21. For many years people asked her why she didn’t open her own company. Fischer said she didn’t have the desire to do so at first, but “then I felt I could offer my clients more.” She had a real estate coach for years and

“I think people appreciate our work ethic. We are there for them from start to finish, no matter their situation.” –Jane Fischer belongs to a mastermind group that also encouraged her to establish her own company. “My father passed in 1996 and he was my biggest cheerleader,” Fischer said. “He took over his father’s business at the age of 19 or 20 and was a successful businessman that I wanted to emulate (because of) his kindness and work ethic.” The Jane Fischer & Associates team has grown tremendously over the past two and a half years. Only three people were part of the team in the beginning: Fischer, realtor associate Jenna Sheriff, and Deb Jorgensen, who was an agent on Fischer’s team when she was with Century 21.

Jorgensen had placed her realtor’s license to inactive, but agreed to work for Jane Fischer & Associates as the office manager. Currently there are five licensed realtors on staff: Fischer, Sheriff, Jessica Graham, Fawn Billinghausen and Alicia Winters. Within a few months, Jane Fischer & As-

sociates will have three more realtors. Jorgensen has applied to move her license back to active status, and two more individuals will join the staff once they receive their realtor licenses. Visit https://www.janefischer.com/ for more information.
