STAR CLASS
Star Class 2020 Recognizing North Iowa’s best students
GLOBE GAZETTE STAFF
ach year, about 200 student-athletes from E area high schools are recognized for their excellence in the classroom and on the athletic fields. Now in its 25th year, Star Class recognizes North Iowa’s best and brightest students. Starting out as a ceremony to honor student-athletes, Star Class evolved over the years to also include and recognize high academic achievements by the most promising graduating high school seniors from 26 area high schools. Each year, faculty, administrators and athletic directors from each high school in the Globe Gazette’s coverage area select their top senior students who excel in one of seven categories: mathematics, social sciences, arts, science, music, language and technical education. They also are asked to choose their top male and female athletes. While there isn’t a 2020 Star Class event scheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and all of the school and business closings and event cancellations, the Globe Gazette still wanted to
pay tribute to the excellence of the more than 200 students who are featured in this special section and who would have gathered at the North Iowa Community Auditorium on the campus of North Iowa Area Community College. We feel confident that these students with so much potential will be our next business executives and doctors, teachers and scientists, legislators and lawyers. And some could land in positions that haven’t even been created yet in this ever-evolving world. Who knows, maybe one of the honorees will help come up with a vaccine for the COVID-19 virus. Special recognition also would have been given to our Partners in Education Money to Learn Scholarship winners. The two Money to Learn Scholarship winners each will be awarded $500 to continue their educational pursuits at North Iowa Area Community College. Star Class is made possible by the Globe Gazette and NIACC.
JERRY SMITH, THE GLOBE GAZETTE
North Iowa Area Community College president Dr. Steven Schulz provided the welcoming remarks for the 2019 Star Class awards celebrating North Iowa high schools’ best and brightest, which was held May 5 at NIACC.
Peterson, Ramon are 2020 Money to Learn scholars JERRY SMITH
jerry.smith@globegazette.com
A senior from Rockford High School who wants to be a “food freedom dietitian” and a homeschooled student from Lake Mills who hopes to become a social worker or work with refugees are the 2020 Globe Gazette’s Partnership in Education Money to Learn Scholarship winners. Emma Ramon, of Nora Springs, and Sarah Peterson, of Lake Mills, will each receive $500 scholarships to continue their educational pursuits at North Iowa Area Community College. The scholarships are handled by the Globe Gazette on behalf of Partners in Education. Awards are based on a required essay themed, “Why I think it’s important to further my education.”
Emma Ramon
For Ramon, furthering her education would allow the Nora Springs senior to “do something that doesn’t feel like work in the future.” Her dream is to work with those struggling with eating disorders. With a passion for diet and body, Ramon “a college education will provide these work opportunities for me,” she said in her essay. Ramon wrote in her essay that with a greater education, she can dig deeper into her skills and continue to grow knowledge needed for my future career. “When I’m older, I intend to be
a “food freedom dietitian.’ I want to dig deeper into psychology and dietetics to help those struggling with eating disorders,” she wrote. “Those with eating disorders hold a special spot in my heart, and I want to be able to help them.” Ramon, who is first in her class of 28 students, said in her essay that college is the next step for her to reach all of her goals. She also believes that college will continue to teach her social and personal skills, as well as critical thinking. “These are skills that will take anybody far in life,” she said in her essay. “I believe college is a time in life where many people learn a lot about themselves. I’m beyond excited for this future career, and can’t wait to get there.”
Sarah Peterson
Peterson said in her essay that education “is like a great, towering tree with sweeping branches that stretch their fingertips toward the sky,” and that “as you climb higher and higher in the tree, you are able to see farther and farther. If you stop on a sturdy Peterson limb and look out, you can see things you never saw before.” The home-schooled student, who scored a 26 on her ACT test, said it is important to further her education because “as I climb the branches of education, I will be able to see issues from many different angles, listen to others
whose views may not be so similar to mine, and strengthen my ability and resolve to help others and inspire them to reach for the sky, too.” Looking to become a social worker or an international studies major with the hope of working with refugees will not be an easy path, Peterson wrote, because “the hard truth is that college is expensive, and neither profession pays much.” “This scholarship would be greatly appreciated, and I am thankful for the opportunity you have given me and other students in need to help alleviate some of the stress of college debt and better further our education,” she said in closing. STAR CLASS
Graduation is indeed a special Your commitment to excellence time, but the future is waiting admired by many I I still remember my graduation. I didn’t know the little button on the back of my gown was where I attached my honor cords, so the whole time I was sitting with the band and awaiting my turn on the stage, I also was fiddling with those stupid cords as they slid all over the place around my neck. JACI I believed a bunch of SMITH friends who pranked me by telling me they weren’t going to wear anything but shorts and T-shirts under their gowns (yes, I am that gullible—still), so I did. They didn’t. And when I walked across the stage to get my diploma, several of the guys yelled, “nice legs!” My father was not pleased. I wanted to be anywhere but at my own graduation party, surrounded by people I hadn’t seen in I don’t know how long, trying to make small talk, all the while looking at my mom out of the corner of my eye for the signal when it would be appropriate for me to dash off with my friends to other grad parties and gatherings, some formal, most not. I didn’t understand – didn’t appreciate, really – all the people who were there that summer to support me, who were eager to be helpful and counsel me on things to think about for future, pitfalls to avoid. Questions to ponder. Unknowns to savor.
In fact, I spent most of that memorable summer living only in the moment, partying with friends, laying on the beach, sleeping in late. When President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama left office in 2016, in their final video message to the country, the First Lady said something that really stuck with me. “We’re going to finally get some sleep, spend some time with our family, and just be still for a little bit,” she said. Be still. What an incredibly hard thing for anyone to do, much less a senior in high school. I know I struggle to find time to be still in my life and I’m an empty nester. But though it’s hard to see it as such, seniors, I ask you to consider the pandemic we’re all experiencing as a gift of sorts. An opportunity to be still. I realize this is difficult. If you were in any extracurricular activities, the chance for one last season of competition or exhibition is likely gone. Graduation itself is a question mark. Prom? Grad parties? All of it is as giant a question mark as your future. The latter is stressful enough, I know, without considering any of the former. But trust us, your community. We have your back. Just like with our Star Class event, though it may not be exactly what you wanted, we will find a way to celebrate you, honor you and do our best to prepare you for your
exciting future. And though it seems like it will last forever, even to me at 53 years old, these difficult, life-changing times will soon pass. You’ll connect with friends. You’ll have your celebrations. But what you may never have again in your life – trust me on this – is this time to just be still. What does that mean? To me, it means having the chance to absorb and memorialize all the things that make your life what it is. Good and bad. Be still. Consider your parents, your siblings, your mentors and their roles in your lives. Revisit the conversations that held meaning in your life. Write letters by hand. Breathe deeply. Sit in a quiet place and watch how life moves on around you. Consider your role and your responsibility in that sacred cycle. Ask yourself, why not me? The future is calling to you. It’s eager for you to jump in and contribute. And we can’t wait to see the amazing things we know you’ll accomplish. That’s the best part of the crazy world we live in. And consider this. I’m not really sure of the source, but I love the idea behind it: “So long as mists envelop you, be still. Be still until the sunlight pours through and dispels the mists – as it surely will. Then act with courage.” Congratulations, Class of 2020.
t is my pleasure to congratulate you on being recognized as a member of the Star Class of 2020. I commend you on your hard work and commitment to excellence STEVEN that has SCHULZ earned you this well-deserved recognition. NIACC is proud to be a sponsor of the Star Class program that
recognizes the “best of the best” among North Iowa’s high school seniors. You should be proud of your accomplishments, but you should be even more proud of the fact that you were nominated by a teacher, administrator, or athletic director to represent your high school as a Star Class honoree. the 2020 Star Class event at NIACC. The COVID-19 virus put an end to that as the pandemic shut down Iowa and the nation. Despite that, Sanger agreed to record a portion of his address for an online version of the Star Class event.
important it is to recognize the outstanding students who serve as role models for younger students. You have not only been recognized for individual achievement, but as a distinguished young person worthy of representing your school and community in the form of this public recognition. I encourage you to take this opportunity to reflect on your school experience and thank the teacher, coach, or administrator who made a difference in your life and contributed to your success in school. Please don’t forget to thank your parents. You are being recognized for your individual accomplishments, but it would be an oversight to not recognize the role your parents have played in your success. You are fortunate to have parents that value education and hard work, and they have set high expectations for you in school and in life. We are disappointed that we will not be able to recognize you in person this year due to COVID-19, but I hope you know that we admire your commitment to excellence and celebrate the opportunity to welcome you to the Star Class of 2020. We at North Iowa Area Community College would welcome the opportunity to serve the “best of the best” as you plan for the next steps in your educational career. If we can be of assistance in anyway as you navigate the pandemic and your future college plans, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Great beginning
In November, Sanger helped lead the Eagles to their third state football title in the program’s storied history. Sanger, who took over head coaching duties from his father, Bob, this season as the elder Sanger underwent treatment for leukemia, led the Eagles to a perfect 13-0 record that culminated with a 21-17 win over Grundy Center in the state title game. It was the program’s first championship since 1996 and third state title for West Hancock. With longtime head coach Bob watching from the stands, and son Mark leading the way on the sideline, West Hancock made history with the win. After a dream season, the honors kept coming for the West Hancock football program. In January, the Iowa Football Coaches Association named Bob and Mark Sanger its Class A state football coaches of the year. “It’s a pretty cool deal,” Mark Sanger said. “Anytime you’re voted by your peers for something like that is a pretty special deal. It means you did something right. It continues to be a part of the special season that we’ve had this year.”

West Hancock head coach Mark Sanger celebrates with his coaching staff after the Eagles’ victory against Grundy Center in November during the state championship game at UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. 350 career wins, seven state championship appearances and three state titles, in 1973, 1996, and 2019. Just a couple of months before he died, Bob Sanger said he loved West Hancock and cherished his time there. “It’s a special place,” Sanger said. “I’m glad I got an opportunity to be a part of it.”
