STAR CLASS 2022
GLOBE GAZETTE STAFF
This year marks the 27th year that Star Class will recognize almost 200 students as North Iowa’s best and brightest. Students are recognized for their excellence not only in academics, but also in athletics, art, and music. Each year, administrators and athletic directors from the high schools in the Globe Gazette coverage area select their top seniors that best represent the Star Class categories. The students chosen to represent these categories embody outstanding capabilities in mathematics, social sciences, arts, science, music, language, technical education, male athlete, and female athlete. The Globe Gazette honored these students in a ceremony at the North Iowa Community Auditorium on the NIACC campus. The event was held on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 3 p.m. We are proud to honor these talented individuals. These students demonstrated the capability to excel despite the challenging years they faced during their high school careers. These students show much potential for the future, and will no

Dale Ludwig named featured speaker for Star Class 2022
Challenging years prepared students for future success
Dale Ludwig has been in the education game for 34 years. For the last 26 years, he’s played a fundamental role at Clear Lake Schools. Not only is Ludwig the high school assistant principal, but he’s also the middle school/high school activities director. Ludwig grew up in Rockwell City and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa. He then obtained a master’s degree in school counseling from Morningside College and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Iowa State University. Before landing his position with the Clear Lake school district, Ludwig taught and coached at Rockwell-Swaledale, Schleswig, and HLV (Victor) Schools. Ludwig’s extensive career includes being a k-12 counselor, teaching high school physical education and middle school English. He also coached varsity girls

volleyball for 16 years and varsity boys basketball for a few years. For the past 19 years, Dale has served as Clear Lake School’s Activities Direc-
tor. He was also named the Northeast Iowa Activities Director of the year in 2019. He served as the President of the Iowa Athletic Directors Association this year,
and has been on the State Athletic Director Executive Board for the past 5 years. Ludwig plans to retire at the end of the 2022 school year.
t this time of the year things are happening so fast. You have been preparing for and looking forward to this time since what seems like your whole life. Your senior year! Now that you are at the end of that special year, take it all in, enjoy every minute, rejoice in the accomJANET JOHNSON plishments you have achieved and learn from those times you stumbled and had to start over. Cherish the friendships you have made, thank those who have helped you along the way; those special teachers, mentors, coaches and just good people who have inspired you to be the best you. Please don’t forget your parents; they have been there more than you will ever know. You have so many things
to be proud of. You have endured COVID-19, learned how to adjust and pivot in a new world. We started the pandemic with the statement, “when things get back to normal.” That will not happen, but you have helped create a new normal. It is easy to focus on all of the bad things that COVID brought, and there have been many, but I challenge you to focus on the good things that come when our community comes together to solve a problem. These are the characteristics that I hope you will take with you as you start the next chapter of your life. How to pivot and adjust to meet a problem and not let it stop you. You are the future leaders, and I know the experiences that you have navigated through will help you to navigate what lays ahead. Congratulation for being recognized as the “Best of the Best” in North Iowa as a Star Class 2022 recipient.
Congratulations!

Advice for soon-to-be college freshmen LEE SHULMAN BIERER
Tribune News Service
The countdown to your first day as a college freshman has begun. There are advice articles galore with lists of what to pack and what not to pack. It’s almost as overwhelming as the college admissions process.
Here are a few important mantras that I like to share.
1. You are going to college in the United States and there will be a Target, CVS or Walgreens close by. There is no need to stock up on items that you can purchase locally. I have heard stories of students insisting on packing a year’s worth of shampoo and laundry detergent. 2. You will be living in a frighteningly small space, and you may be sharing it with one, two or three other students. There simply isn’t enough room for you to bring all of your clothes, all your personal mementos and everything that reminds you of home. 3. The U.S. Postal Service does a great job. If you forgot something, you can either have it sent or it can wait until you come home at Thanksgiving. 4. Nobody wants to lug everything up to your room and then realize there’s no space and then have to lug it back to the car and then back to your home. Pack lightly and intelligently. 5. Physical space and outlet capacity is at a premium. Any important item that doesn’t require being plugged in and doesn’t take up a lot space becomes more valuable. Based on conversations with students who have recently completed their freshman year, here’s what they said was unnecessary.
Don’t bring:
Keurig: It sounds like a great idea: coffee in your room any time you want. But students preferred to make their coffee-time social and join
friends at Starbucks. A Keurig also takes up space and a valuable outlet. Television: Most students were happy watching their favorite shows on their laptops. A subscription to Netflix or Hulu could be a great gift. Printers and ink: Check with your school: Many colleges now provide complimentary printing. It’s a great perk. Wall calendars/wall planners: Face it: You’re just not going to use them. There are plenty of organizational apps that are easily accessed on your phone and allow for continual modifications. Candles/hotplates: Most colleges have strict rules against candle and hotplate usage. Microwave or refrigerator: Unless you’ve already checked out what is allowed by the specific residence hall. Once you are aware of what is allowable, it’s a great idea for one roommate to purchase the microwave and another to purchase the refrigerator.
