Since 1927 we have received thousands of letters similar to the ones above, which continue to reinforce the importance and true meaning of the Christmas Cheer Fund. Letters from children, adults and letters received anonymously, all asking for a little support during the holiday season.

In 1927 Lee Loomis, publisher of the Globe-Gazette founded the Christmas Cheer Fund, and each year thereafter it has continued to help brighten the holidays for many North Iowa residents due to your generosity. In the past 85 years you have given $2,392,900.86 to help North Iowans in need of a little cheer for the holidays. Every donation counts. Regardless of the size of your gift, anything will be greatly appreciated.

The 2012 Cheer Fund goal is $120,000. “ These people are not asking for elaborate gifts. They just want a little extra money to help buy food and other necessities,” said Globe-Gazette Publisher Howard Query. “This Fund is one way people can spread holiday joy.”

Your support of Opportunity Village brings a brighter life to nearly 600 of your friends and neighbors with intellectual disabilities. The Village, based in Clear Lake, offers supports and services to individuals in many communities around northern Iowa. What does that look like? It might be a woman who gets paid to work at a meaningful job for her skill level.

It could be a man who receives Village support to live with a couple of friends in a small home in their local town. It might be someone with many needs who gets therapy, keeps active, and makes friends. You probably know someone who receives support from the Village or someone who works here, since we touch so many lives in this area.

The Village opened in 1971 as a local provider of services, through the vision of inspired and committed community members in Clear Lake. Today, we still find vital inspiration and support from donors and volunteers who believe in this mission.

With the holidays offering a season of peace on earth, good will to men, many North Iowa organizations are feeling the benefits of strong support.

“I just feel blessed to live in North Iowa where the entire community takes the opportunity to donate their time, talents and treasures to organizations and people who can really use some help,” said Ozzie Ohl, volunteer for the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank in Mason City.

Whether it’s dropping money in a Salvation Army Kettle, gifts in the Toys for Tots box, or donating time to help raise funds, organizations say the spirit of giving is bright throughout the holiday season.

“Traditionally, November and December are our biggest months for donations,” said Ohl. “I would say that 35 percent of all the proceeds we receive come during those months.”

Ohl said while the revenues come late in the year, the needs of people who utilize the food bank are year around. In August of this year 1,523 people utilized the food bank and in October 1,607 people received assistance.

“We’ve been very fortunate that people have been donating the types of items that we’ve called for,” said Ohl. In addition to the canned goods, fruits, vegetables and soaps that the food bank has asked for, people have also provided cash donations.

“We’re able to buy food at a considerably better price through the state program,” he said. “There’s no question that people want to help. They’re very sharing and caring people.”

The Mason City Salvation Army also looks to the holidays for its major revenue. Hundreds get involved in the annual Red Kettle Campaign, ringing the bell to generate donations.

“This is the time of year that two-thirds of our budget is generated,” said Maj. Gary Cole.

While donations are collected throughout the year, thousands of people get involved during the holiday season - both ringing the bell and filling the kettles.

Last year red kettles in Mason City generated a record $247,000. The pace hasn’t been as brisk this year, according to Cole, but the organization remains optimistic. It has bell ringing opportunities still available and anyone looking to take a shift can volunteer by calling 641-424-4031.

Amanda Ragan of the Community Kitchen of North Iowa says people are good about donating all year around. “But when it gets to be the holiday season,” she said, “people are more generous.

“They’re thankful for the things they have and very good about contributing their time and money.”

The community kitchen has started offering evening meals. In addition to noon meals served Monday through Saturday, evening meals are offered Monday through Thursday.

“We generally see some seasonal layoffs that do bring more people to the kitchen this time of year,” she said. “So the additional resources during the holidays are beneficial.”

The Knights of Columbus was first formed in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, CT. His hope was to unite men in their faith and provide for Catholic families in times of need. Guided by four core principles – charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism – other Catholic men soon followed suit and helped lay the foundation that has allowed the Order to flourish.

The Knights of Columbus is an active volunteer organization that raises awareness for needy causes and generates much needed funds to support a variety of charitable activities, including support of local parishes, renovation for churches and building of Catholic schools and seminaries. Our members have volunteered millions of hours and raised over a billion dollars – all with the intent to benefit humanity.

Today, the Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic service organization in the world.

Locally one of our biggest fund raising event is our Tootsie Roll Fund Raiser which usually starts the first weekend in August. Ninety percent of the funds raised locally goes directly to the local charities listed below.

Our hall is available for rental for weddings, graduations, company parties, etc.

We can provide the food for your event or you can have it catered in. We also hold what is known as our famous Friday Night Fish and Chicken Fry, which is open to the public. The money raised from these events goes toward paying our basic expenses and also goes toward local scholarship programs.

Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa

It started as an opportunity to do something different with my step-son. We signed up to ring the bell for the Mason City Salvation Army one Christmas a few years back.

But like many meaningful things in life, it has become more than we ever imagined and yes, it is one of our Christmas traditions.

My step-son Garrett Carlson has a great appetite for trying new things and he liked the idea before I was done asking.

Garrett has Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy and is wheelchair-bound. I only mention this because that first year we ran the bell it was a great challenge. We were stationed outside the front door of a grocery store on a very cold and snowy night. It really wasn’t much fun.

We took turns ringing the bell and going inside the store to warm up. I admired Garrett’s determination when he came out, rolling over the hard-packed snow to take a place beside the kettle. He was so bundled up you could barely see the bell.

Despite the fact that my wife, Linda, had Garrett well prepared with a big parka, heavy gloves and warm boots, we both got chilled early and the only thing really warming us was the people stopping to put money in the kettle and wish us a Merry Christmas.

Since that first year we’ve learned to make a request for warmer, indoor assignments while ringing the bell. And the significance of the assignment changed for my step-son.

For the past couple of years Garrett has been spending two days a week at the Salvation Army Adult Day Care facility. The other three days a week Garrett works at Opportunity Village.

Last year as we prepared to ring the bell for the third time, he proudly exclaimed that we would be helping the organization that helps our family.I noticed that despite his handicap he was more determined than ever. And according to my unofficial calculation we gathered more money than previous years.

We by no means are top money generators. And our once-a-year effort doesn’t touch the commitment of some who support the Army. But it has become important to us.

Salvation Army officials say between 400 and 500 people, like us, take one two-hour shift a year. Between 150 and 200 companies and businesses, along with a large number of churches, commit to help fill the kettles.

Kettle Campaign Chairman Tim Flemming says that everyone involved makes a big difference. “Whether you donate a gold Krugerrand or take the bell for one twohour shift, it all means the same.

“People give whatever they can, whether it’s time or money. Itt all makes a difference.”

Garrett and I have signed up to ringing the bell again this year - and for the record, we’ll be in the mall.

For three decades, The Community Kitchen has fought the ill effects of hunger and malnutrition among our citizens. Many of the elements which led to our founding are present today - - poverty; unemployment or underemployment; low income working poor; homelessness; people with mental, physical, or emotional challenges; fixed income elderly who are constrained by increasing medical and prescription costs; single parent families; children and adolescents in need of nutrition. The Kitchen, located at 606 North Monroe, works to meet the needs of people in North Iowa by being open Monday through Saturday serving a meal starting at 11:30 am and evening meals Monday through Thursday starting at 5 pm. Food and supplies are also provided to a satellite site in Clear Lake, which serves evening meals on Monday and Friday at Zion Lutheran Church. Wednesday meals are served at the Clear Lake Senior Citizen’s Center. Volunteers from the area serve balanced meals with the sense of community and caring which is at the center of everything we do.

The mission of Meals On Wheels is to provide for the delivery of nutritious meals to the homes of those who need them. This is necessary because there are people in our community who have difficulty preparing their own meals for a variety of physical, financial, or mental conditions, including recovery from an illness or operation. The meals are prepared under the supervision of dietitians at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated through our program.

Meal On Wheels is an example of how our community cares for its own citizens.

The elderly ill, or temporarily infirm, can be afforded a better quality of life through the nutritious meals we provide, which can markedly enhance the healing process.

It also enables people to live in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes, a valuable benefit as our population ages.

Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa (HFHNCI), a Christian-based organization, builds, simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with families in need. Serving the region since 1994, HFHNCI, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is an independent, locally run, nonprofit organization.

Habitat helps families of low to moderate incomes become homeowners by building and partnering in the creation of affordable housing. Habitat families also learn financial literacy skills, increase home maintenance abilities, and gain valuable friendships and connections throughout the building process. Habitat families have many reasons to be proud, and work hard to provide a safe and affordable home for their children. To date, HFHNCIhashelped 43 local families become homeowners throughout the region of Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Hancock, Winnebago, Worth, and Wright counties.

Habitat families qualify if they meet the following three criteria. First they must have a need- includingunaffordable housing costs, overcrowding, or unsafe living conditions. Secondly, they must be willing to partner with Habitat. Each adult is required to complete 250 hours of “sweat equity,” along with friends and family, by helping to build their home and other families’ homes, andassistingin our office, ReStore, or with special events. Finally, families must have a steady income and be able to makelow monthly payments towards a 0% interest mortgage.

There are currently homeownership opportunities available in Garner and Mason City. All interested parties are encouraged to apply now.

There are many ways to support Habitat. Funds are needed to cover the cost of construction materials and fulfill our mission. All donations are tax-deductible and are true investments in the communities we serve. Volunteers are needed to help with construction, deconstruction, selecting Habitat families, marketing, fundraising, and various other opportunities.

You can help give a neglected child a voice

We’re here for you because of our volunteers

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA volunteers) give a child a voice in juvenile court.

CASA volunteers are trained to advocate for abused or neglected children in North Iowa who through no fault of their own are the subject of juvenile court hearings. Volunteers are trained to look out for the best interests of these children with the ultimate goal of a safe, permanent and nurturing home. According to District Court Judge Gregg Rosenbladt, “Our local CASA volunteers are well respected for their thorough and objective reports for the juvenile court to consider when making decisions that affect a child’s life.”

The ideal CASA volunteer has a flexible daytime schedule, strong communication and writing skills and the ability to be open minded and objective. Volunteer time is generally flexible and involves approximately 7-10 hours per month. Once training is completed, a one year commitment is expected. Debra Haugen, who is employed full time, has been a volunteer for 5 years. She says her experience as a CASA has been “interesting, educational and rewarding.”

Each morning trained American Red Cross volunteers do not necessarily know what the day will bring. They could be teaching a course in CPR or First Aid empowering neighbors to save lives. It could be they are helping out with a local blood drive, or it could be that they are responding to a local, regional or national disaster providing shelter, food, emotional support, and hope to those in need after a very devastating emergency or disaster. No matter what is asked, the Red Cross volunteer is there to serve this community.

Children served by North Iowa CASAs quite often are victims of abuse or neglect due to their parents’ substance abuse or violence in the home. The parents are putting their own needs ahead of their child’s needs. CASA volunteers work hand in hand with local family service agencies and the Court to ensure parents are offered the assistance they need to safely parent their children.

Volunteers are always needed to support the work of the Red Cross. Volunteers can help in the office, during disaster, assist with event planning and even help with National disasters. All training is free of charge.

CASA volunteers are a consistent adult in a child’s life. Children who have a CASA volunteer are less likely to fall through the cracks of an overburdened child welfare system. They are less likely to be bounced from home to home, get more help while in the child welfare system, spend less time in foster care and are more likely to be placed in a safe, permanent home.

Here in the Mason City office, the Red Cross has provided food, shelter, clothing and emotional support to 102 individuals after 26 local disasters such as home fires.

Almost 1,000 people have been trained in life saving CPR, First Aid, AED, and water safety including 145 new lifeguards.

The Humane Society of North Iowa has been helping animals in the North Iowa area for over 50 years. Originally founded on the farm of Alice Ann Blackmore, the organization has grown and flourished over the past five decades to become North Iowa’s premier animal shelter and rescue organization.

The mission of the Humane Society of North Iowa is to provide temporary shelter, food, medical attention, and comfort to displaced and neglected companion animals and educate the public about the humane care of animals with the goal of reducing overpopulation.

The heart of this mission is to find loving homes for the hundreds of animals that come to the shelter each year. Last year, the Humane Society of North Iowa adopted over 700 animals into loving homes and has found homes for over 7000 animals in the past 25 years.

The Humane Society of North Iowa is a non-profit organization funded primarily though individual donations. The organization relies on monetary and in-kind donations to provide care to the animals in the shelter as well as to be a resource to the community for animal related issues.

The Humane Society of North Iowa’s greatest need is community support.

“Monetary donations help us pay for veterinarian bills, cat litter, and pet food”, explained Executive Director Sybil Soukup, “We also rely on in-kind donations of supplies we use in our shelter. Lastly, we rely on the donation of time from volunteers who are able to socialize shelter cats and walk shelter dogs.”

As many North Iowans continue to struggle with finding jobs and paying bills, the Christmas Cheer Fund this year has set its goal at $120,000. Gifts from the fund - issued via Target gift cards - helped more than 2,600 individuals and families in North Iowa in 2011, a record, with more requests than ever expected this year.

“I think we will have a huge challenge this year,” said Howard Query, publisher of the Globe Gazette and president of the Christmas Cheer Fund. “I think the demand will be as intense as it was a year ago.“ Christmas Cheer Fund Treasurer Linda Halfman agreed. She said some people began calling the Globe Gazette more than a month ago to ask when applications for help would be available.

The Cheer Fund began in 1927 is now in its 85th year. Lee Loomis, the publisher of the Globe Gazette at that time, saw an opportunity to help people in need. He said, “No child should go without a Christmas gift.” The 1927 Cheer Fund goal was $300 and donations came in at $301.30. More than $2.3 million has been raised to help the needy of North Iowa since the fund began.

Only monetary donations are accepted. Query noted that every dollar that comes to the Christmas Cheer Fund is given back to the community. Gifts from the Cheer Fund are issued on Target gift cards.

The Christmas Cheer Fund began using the cards so that purchases made could be tracked. Those who use the cards for items such as alcohol will not be eligible for future gifts.

Donations may be mailed to Christmas Cheer Fund, Box 271, Mason City IA 50402-0271 or dropped off at the Globe Gazette, 300 North Washington Avenue (just north across the street from the Cerro Gordo Court House).

While it might be tough to reach this year’s goal - Query said other needs, such as the one presented by Hurricane Sandy, also are being met.

“Even so, if everyone in North Iowa gave a donation of just $1, we would easily meet the goal,” Query said.

He said he also well knows of the generous hearts displayed by North Iowans.

“They have always come through for us,” Query said.

Fossil & Prairie Center

The celebration of our nation’s birth has been celebrated in Clear Lake for over a century.

The community event, organized by the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, is a week-long celebration drawing 50,000 annual visitors from far and wide.

Highlights include the Evans United Shows carnival and midway, a Clear Lake tradition for 40 years and counting. The traditional parade, which is the oldest parade held on Independence Day in the State of Iowa, is a representation of community support featuring local businesses, organizations, as well as top political figures who flock to this hometown tradition. The celebration would not be complete without the breathtaking fireworks display that takes place on Clear Lake and can be viewed for miles and miles. This display is well known as the “Biggest and Best” fireworks display in the Midwest, and puts the crowning touch on our tribute to America the Beautiful.

Established in 2001, the Fossil & Prairie Center Foundation was created to assist in the functions and efforts of the Floyd County Conservation Board as an avenue for volunteers and to raise/distribute funds to promote conservation and historical preservation. The Foundation’s first project was assisting the county in building a nature center at the Fossil & Prairie Park. After the completion of the Fossil & Prairie Center, the Foundation developed the exhibits and displays to inform visitors of the various aspects of the park. To date approximately 5000 people visit the Center annually. Visitors enjoy the hands on opportunities that exist outside in the Park and the interactive components inside the Center describing the unique Devonian Fossils, Iowa’s prairie and the history of the Rockford Brick & Tile Co..

Education and Youth are high priorities for the Foundation. Through the sponsoring of youth, family and adult environmental programs, with the assistance of Floyd Co. Naturalists, these priority goals are achieved. To encourage participants in these events the Foundation offers scholarships for assistance to attend these programs.

Observing news headlines on green energy, childhood obesity and Nature Deficit Disorder the Foundation wanted to expand into these areas. However, their name no longer reflected this expansion. Thus in 2011 they changed their name to the Fossil & Prairie Conservation Foundation. Currently, the Foundation is assisting in land acquisition projects, the installation and education of wind and solar power at the Fossil & Prairie Center, and encouraging winter activities through the purchase of cross county skis and snowshoes.

Charlie Brown Preschool and Child Care centers have been providing quality child care and early childhood education to families in North Iowa since 1968. It has always been Charlie Brown’s goal to support our working families no matter their economic status, whether you are a Doctor or Lawyer or a single mom trying to get an education, Charlie Brown is here to serve you.

Charlie Brown strives to give support to families, particularly those who may need some extra support financially to begin or maintain employment. The Directors and Teachers at Charlie Brown are here to assist parents through the entire process of applying for Child Care Assistance programs through DHS and Iowa Workforce. In partnering with United Way, Charlie Brown can also offer assistance to help families get on their feet when beginning new employment and for those who need child care assistance to maintain current employment. The goal of this partnership is to assist struggling families into reaching financial stability and self sufficiency.

It has been said that investing in Early Childhood Education is the best investment a community can make to ensure the quality of its future. Preschool plays a huge role in socially and emotionally preparing children for school. The preschool teachers at Charlie Brown are qualified with degrees in education. All of the teachers and child care providers receive training year round to ensure developmental awareness of all age groups.

Charlie Brown offers early childhood programs for children birth through 5 years old and an after school program and summer camp for school age children. Preschool is provided daily to 3 and 4 year olds. Scholarships are available for these programs through Early Childhood North Iowa. Through a partnership with the State of Iowa and the Mason City School System, the 4 year old preschool is available FREE to children who are 4 before September 15th and enrolled by October 1st. Enrollments are taken year round.

A play-based quality program for preschoolers should provide a safe, healthy, stimulating environment which fosters the child’s development as a human being. It is our goal to provide a program that enhances the child’s cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development.

A smile from a stranger passing by on the street is a very simple gesture. The person who offered the smile may not even realize it, but they have sent the message that they have noticed you. That smile and message have the power to brighten an entire day. As adults we have the power to brighten the future of our children by sending them the same message.

Think of the people who influenced you as a child. Many people are able to list a number of adults who were positive role models to them in their formative years. Maybe they were a coach, teacher, neighbor, or someone from church. It may be hard to imagine how life would have turned out without the help of those individuals. As children, we may not have realized those people volunteered to be involved in our lives. Often times, it is not until children become adults that they realize the profound impact those individuals had on their lives.

Numerous studies document that mentors help young people develop social skills and emotional well-being, improve cognitive skills, and plan for the future. From teachers to coaches to mentors we are finding that all of these individuals are able to have long-lasting, positive impacts in the lives of children. Mentors are not necessarily experts at dealing with children; mentors are simply people who care. If you are willing to listen to and encourage a young person, you already possess all of the skills necessary to be a mentor.

The time requirement is minimal. An hour a week is all that is necessary to make an impact. Just as a fleeting smile from a stranger can change your day, an hour of your time could be the highlight of a child’s week. Studies show that about 40% of a teenagers’ waking hours are spent without companionship or supervision. An hour spent with a caring adult has a positive impact on how the rest of that time is used.

As adults, we have the power to energize the youth in our communities just by spending time with them. Mentoring is a way to put together many simple gestures to have a big impact on the life of a child.

The North Iowa Child Abuse Prevention Council (NICAPC) is pleased to announce the addition of a full time AmeriCorps Service Member! Robin McClelland, Service Member, will be serving not only the NICAPC, but all North Central Iowa Child Abuse Prevention Councils. McClelland will play an active role in preventing child abuse in Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Floyd, Franklin, Hancock, Kossuth, Mitchell, Winnebago and Worth Counties.

AmeriCorps is a national network of programs engaging over 70,000 Americans in service to their communities. McClelland is in service to Prevent Child Abuse Iowa and is hosted by United Way North Central Iowa. Her duties include managing tasks for the councils, researching evidence based programming, and educating the public about the critical need for child abuse prevention. McClelland encourages community members to take note of the following statistics: • Cerro Gordo ranks 4th in all Iowa counties for denial of critical care abuse indicating there is a lack of medical care, appropriate supervision, and adequate amounts of food.

• Cerro Gordo also ranks 3rd for children with drugs in their systems.

• In 2011, there were 572 children abused in the nine county, north central Iowa region.

North central Iowans can take action to prevent child abuse in our community.

The NICAPC meets the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Will F. Muse Center Conference Room, 600 1st ST NW – Mason City. The next meeting is scheduled for December 20 at 3:30 p.m. Community members and service providers are encouraged to attend.

Backpack Buddies: Provides meals to hungry children in several north central Iowa elementary schools. Children receive sacks of food to take home as meals to feed them through the weekend. Since launching the program in October, over 100 children have been fed.

Saints Shuttle and Fort Dodge Dash: Provides transportation to University of Iowa Hospital Clinics in Iowa City and Community Health Center in Fort Dodge twice a week.

Iowa Care Members pay just $1 each way to get to medical appointments and avoid over using the Emergency Room.

TeenScreen Schools and Communities: Provides north central Iowa teens with a mental health survey to prevent suicide. The program now covers 16 north Iowa high schools.

This program is critical, as suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for Iowa teens.

In addition to these three initiatives, United Way funded 25 programs to 21 community agencies from our 2011 Campaign. Our goal is less about helping one person at a time and more about changing systems to help all of us.

Northern Lights Alliance for the Homeless began serving the homeless in December of 1999. The shelter since has served persons that have found there self in a homeless situation and many have been mothers with small children, Northern Lights started with a 10 bed facility for homeless men and since operate a total of 5 shelters to accommodate this growing number of homeless persons in this area.

Northern Lights Alliance operates the Northern Lights Men’s Emergency Shelter, Courage Hall for Veterans and Walters House for Men. Gerrit House is permanent housing for chronically homeless Men with disabilities. In 2007, Trinity House of Hope opened to shelter women and children.

This past year Northern Lights has sheltered and provided referral services to 477 individuals. 172 women, 52 children and 253 men…there are many men, women with children coming from all counties in the North Iowa area that are without income or resources that would allow them to be self-sufficient.

With the increasing number of persons unemployed and being evicted from their homes; this growing number has been brought to the community’s attention that homelessness is on the rise. Northern Lights Homeless Shelters are doing everything to meet the needs of this community problem.

Northern Lights Mission continues to provide shelter, food, and clothing, along with referral services to all persons served by the shelters.

The operational cost for the five shelters is $14,500.00 per month. Northern Lights draw upon community support, surrounding counties, state and federal funding to support and continue the shelters mission to end homelessness in the North Iowa Area.

Each act of kindness truly benefits our shelters.

Fossil & Prairie Center

The celebration of our nation’s birth has been celebrated in Clear Lake for over a century.

The community event, organized by the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, is a week-long celebration drawing 50,000 annual visitors from far and wide.

Highlights include the Evans United Shows carnival and midway, a Clear Lake tradition for 40 years and counting. The traditional parade, which is the oldest parade held on Independence Day in the State of Iowa, is a representation of community support featuring local businesses, organizations, as well as top political figures who flock to this hometown tradition. The celebration would not be complete without the breathtaking fireworks display that takes place on Clear Lake and can be viewed for miles and miles. This display is well known as the “Biggest and Best” fireworks display in the Midwest, and puts the crowning touch on our tribute to America the Beautiful.

Established in 2001, the Fossil & Prairie Center Foundation was created to assist in the functions and efforts of the Floyd County Conservation Board as an avenue for volunteers and to raise/distribute funds to promote conservation and historical preservation. The Foundation’s first project was assisting the county in building a nature center at the Fossil & Prairie Park. After the completion of the Fossil & Prairie Center, the Foundation developed the exhibits and displays to inform visitors of the various aspects of the park. To date approximately 5000 people visit the Center annually. Visitors enjoy the hands on opportunities that exist outside in the Park and the interactive components inside the Center describing the unique Devonian Fossils, Iowa’s prairie and the history of the Rockford Brick & Tile Co..

Education and Youth are high priorities for the Foundation. Through the sponsoring of youth, family and adult environmental programs, with the assistance of Floyd Co. Naturalists, these priority goals are achieved. To encourage participants in these events the Foundation offers scholarships for assistance to attend these programs.

Observing news headlines on green energy, childhood obesity and Nature Deficit Disorder the Foundation wanted to expand into these areas. However, their name no longer reflected this expansion. Thus in 2011 they changed their name to the Fossil & Prairie Conservation Foundation. Currently, the Foundation is assisting in land acquisition projects, the installation and education of wind and solar power at the Fossil & Prairie Center, and encouraging winter activities through the purchase of cross county skis and snowshoes.

The Humane Society of North Iowa has been helping animals in the North Iowa area for over 50 years. Originally founded on the farm of Alice Ann Blackmore, the organization has grown and flourished over the past five decades to become North Iowa’s premier animal shelter and rescue organization.

The mission of the Humane Society of North Iowa is to provide temporary shelter, food, medical attention, and comfort to displaced and neglected companion animals and educate the public about the humane care of animals with the goal of reducing overpopulation.

The heart of this mission is to find loving homes for the hundreds of animals that come to the shelter each year. Last year, the Humane Society of North Iowa adopted over 700 animals into loving homes and has found homes for over 7000 animals in the past 25 years.

The Humane Society of North Iowa is a non-profit organization funded primarily though individual donations. The organization relies on monetary and in-kind donations to provide care to the animals in the shelter as well as to be a resource to the community for animal related issues.

The Humane Society of North Iowa’s greatest need is community support.

“Monetary donations help us pay for veterinarian bills, cat litter, and pet food”, explained Executive Director Sybil Soukup, “We also rely on in-kind donations of supplies we use in our shelter. Lastly, we rely on the donation of time from volunteers who are able to socialize shelter cats and walk shelter dogs.”

As many North Iowans continue to struggle with finding jobs and paying bills, the Christmas Cheer Fund this year has set its goal at $120,000. Gifts from the fund - issued via Target gift cards - helped more than 2,600 individuals and families in North Iowa in 2011, a record, with more requests than ever expected this year.

“I think we will have a huge challenge this year,” said Howard Query, publisher of the Globe Gazette and president of the Christmas Cheer Fund. “I think the demand will be as intense as it was a year ago.“ Christmas Cheer Fund Treasurer Linda Halfman agreed. She said some people began calling the Globe Gazette more than a month ago to ask when applications for help would be available.

The Cheer Fund began in 1927 is now in its 85th year. Lee Loomis, the publisher of the Globe Gazette at that time, saw an opportunity to help people in need. He said, “No child should go without a Christmas gift.” The 1927 Cheer Fund goal was $300 and donations came in at $301.30. More than $2.3 million has been raised to help the needy of North Iowa since the fund began.

Only monetary donations are accepted. Query noted that every dollar that comes to the Christmas Cheer Fund is given back to the community. Gifts from the Cheer Fund are issued on Target gift cards.

The Christmas Cheer Fund began using the cards so that purchases made could be tracked. Those who use the cards for items such as alcohol will not be eligible for future gifts.

Donations may be mailed to Christmas Cheer Fund, Box 271, Mason City IA 50402-0271 or dropped off at the Globe Gazette, 300 North Washington Avenue (just north across the street from the Cerro Gordo Court House).

While it might be tough to reach this year’s goal - Query said other needs, such as the one presented by Hurricane Sandy, also are being met.

“Even so, if everyone in North Iowa gave a donation of just $1, we would easily meet the goal,” Query said.

He said he also well knows of the generous hearts displayed by North Iowans.

“They have always come through for us,” Query said.

You can help give a neglected child a voice

We’re here for you because of our volunteers

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA volunteers) give a child a voice in juvenile court.

CASA volunteers are trained to advocate for abused or neglected children in North Iowa who through no fault of their own are the subject of juvenile court hearings. Volunteers are trained to look out for the best interests of these children with the ultimate goal of a safe, permanent and nurturing home. According to District Court Judge Gregg Rosenbladt, “Our local CASA volunteers are well respected for their thorough and objective reports for the juvenile court to consider when making decisions that affect a child’s life.”

The ideal CASA volunteer has a flexible daytime schedule, strong communication and writing skills and the ability to be open minded and objective. Volunteer time is generally flexible and involves approximately 7-10 hours per month. Once training is completed, a one year commitment is expected. Debra Haugen, who is employed full time, has been a volunteer for 5 years. She says her experience as a CASA has been “interesting, educational and rewarding.”

Each morning trained American Red Cross volunteers do not necessarily know what the day will bring. They could be teaching a course in CPR or First Aid empowering neighbors to save lives. It could be they are helping out with a local blood drive, or it could be that they are responding to a local, regional or national disaster providing shelter, food, emotional support, and hope to those in need after a very devastating emergency or disaster. No matter what is asked, the Red Cross volunteer is there to serve this community.

Children served by North Iowa CASAs quite often are victims of abuse or neglect due to their parents’ substance abuse or violence in the home. The parents are putting their own needs ahead of their child’s needs. CASA volunteers work hand in hand with local family service agencies and the Court to ensure parents are offered the assistance they need to safely parent their children.

Volunteers are always needed to support the work of the Red Cross. Volunteers can help in the office, during disaster, assist with event planning and even help with National disasters. All training is free of charge.

CASA volunteers are a consistent adult in a child’s life. Children who have a CASA volunteer are less likely to fall through the cracks of an overburdened child welfare system. They are less likely to be bounced from home to home, get more help while in the child welfare system, spend less time in foster care and are more likely to be placed in a safe, permanent home.

Here in the Mason City office, the Red Cross has provided food, shelter, clothing and emotional support to 102 individuals after 26 local disasters such as home fires.

Almost 1,000 people have been trained in life saving CPR, First Aid, AED, and water safety including 145 new lifeguards.

Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa

It started as an opportunity to do something different with my step-son. We signed up to ring the bell for the Mason City Salvation Army one Christmas a few years back.

But like many meaningful things in life, it has become more than we ever imagined and yes, it is one of our Christmas traditions.

My step-son Garrett Carlson has a great appetite for trying new things and he liked the idea before I was done asking.

Garrett has Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy and is wheelchair-bound. I only mention this because that first year we ran the bell it was a great challenge. We were stationed outside the front door of a grocery store on a very cold and snowy night. It really wasn’t much fun.

We took turns ringing the bell and going inside the store to warm up. I admired Garrett’s determination when he came out, rolling over the hard-packed snow to take a place beside the kettle. He was so bundled up you could barely see the bell.

Despite the fact that my wife, Linda, had Garrett well prepared with a big parka, heavy gloves and warm boots, we both got chilled early and the only thing really warming us was the people stopping to put money in the kettle and wish us a Merry Christmas.

Since that first year we’ve learned to make a request for warmer, indoor assignments while ringing the bell. And the significance of the assignment changed for my step-son.

For the past couple of years Garrett has been spending two days a week at the Salvation Army Adult Day Care facility. The other three days a week Garrett works at Opportunity Village.

Last year as we prepared to ring the bell for the third time, he proudly exclaimed that we would be helping the organization that helps our family.I noticed that despite his handicap he was more determined than ever. And according to my unofficial calculation we gathered more money than previous years.

We by no means are top money generators. And our once-a-year effort doesn’t touch the commitment of some who support the Army. But it has become important to us.

Salvation Army officials say between 400 and 500 people, like us, take one two-hour shift a year. Between 150 and 200 companies and businesses, along with a large number of churches, commit to help fill the kettles.

Kettle Campaign Chairman Tim Flemming says that everyone involved makes a big difference. “Whether you donate a gold Krugerrand or take the bell for one twohour shift, it all means the same.

“People give whatever they can, whether it’s time or money. Itt all makes a difference.”

Garrett and I have signed up to ringing the bell again this year - and for the record, we’ll be in the mall.

For three decades, The Community Kitchen has fought the ill effects of hunger and malnutrition among our citizens. Many of the elements which led to our founding are present today - - poverty; unemployment or underemployment; low income working poor; homelessness; people with mental, physical, or emotional challenges; fixed income elderly who are constrained by increasing medical and prescription costs; single parent families; children and adolescents in need of nutrition. The Kitchen, located at 606 North Monroe, works to meet the needs of people in North Iowa by being open Monday through Saturday serving a meal starting at 11:30 am and evening meals Monday through Thursday starting at 5 pm. Food and supplies are also provided to a satellite site in Clear Lake, which serves evening meals on Monday and Friday at Zion Lutheran Church. Wednesday meals are served at the Clear Lake Senior Citizen’s Center. Volunteers from the area serve balanced meals with the sense of community and caring which is at the center of everything we do.

The mission of Meals On Wheels is to provide for the delivery of nutritious meals to the homes of those who need them. This is necessary because there are people in our community who have difficulty preparing their own meals for a variety of physical, financial, or mental conditions, including recovery from an illness or operation. The meals are prepared under the supervision of dietitians at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated through our program.

Meal On Wheels is an example of how our community cares for its own citizens.

The elderly ill, or temporarily infirm, can be afforded a better quality of life through the nutritious meals we provide, which can markedly enhance the healing process.

It also enables people to live in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes, a valuable benefit as our population ages.

Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa (HFHNCI), a Christian-based organization, builds, simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with families in need. Serving the region since 1994, HFHNCI, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is an independent, locally run, nonprofit organization.

Habitat helps families of low to moderate incomes become homeowners by building and partnering in the creation of affordable housing. Habitat families also learn financial literacy skills, increase home maintenance abilities, and gain valuable friendships and connections throughout the building process. Habitat families have many reasons to be proud, and work hard to provide a safe and affordable home for their children. To date, HFHNCIhashelped 43 local families become homeowners throughout the region of Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Hancock, Winnebago, Worth, and Wright counties.

Habitat families qualify if they meet the following three criteria. First they must have a need- includingunaffordable housing costs, overcrowding, or unsafe living conditions. Secondly, they must be willing to partner with Habitat. Each adult is required to complete 250 hours of “sweat equity,” along with friends and family, by helping to build their home and other families’ homes, andassistingin our office, ReStore, or with special events. Finally, families must have a steady income and be able to makelow monthly payments towards a 0% interest mortgage.

There are currently homeownership opportunities available in Garner and Mason City. All interested parties are encouraged to apply now.

There are many ways to support Habitat. Funds are needed to cover the cost of construction materials and fulfill our mission. All donations are tax-deductible and are true investments in the communities we serve. Volunteers are needed to help with construction, deconstruction, selecting Habitat families, marketing, fundraising, and various other opportunities.

Your support of Opportunity Village brings a brighter life to nearly 600 of your friends and neighbors with intellectual disabilities. The Village, based in Clear Lake, offers supports and services to individuals in many communities around northern Iowa. What does that look like? It might be a woman who gets paid to work at a meaningful job for her skill level.

It could be a man who receives Village support to live with a couple of friends in a small home in their local town. It might be someone with many needs who gets therapy, keeps active, and makes friends. You probably know someone who receives support from the Village or someone who works here, since we touch so many lives in this area.

The Village opened in 1971 as a local provider of services, through the vision of inspired and committed community members in Clear Lake. Today, we still find vital inspiration and support from donors and volunteers who believe in this mission.

With the holidays offering a season of peace on earth, good will to men, many North Iowa organizations are feeling the benefits of strong support.

“I just feel blessed to live in North Iowa where the entire community takes the opportunity to donate their time, talents and treasures to organizations and people who can really use some help,” said Ozzie Ohl, volunteer for the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank in Mason City.

Whether it’s dropping money in a Salvation Army Kettle, gifts in the Toys for Tots box, or donating time to help raise funds, organizations say the spirit of giving is bright throughout the holiday season.

“Traditionally, November and December are our biggest months for donations,” said Ohl. “I would say that 35 percent of all the proceeds we receive come during those months.”

Ohl said while the revenues come late in the year, the needs of people who utilize the food bank are year around. In August of this year 1,523 people utilized the food bank and in October 1,607 people received assistance.

“We’ve been very fortunate that people have been donating the types of items that we’ve called for,” said Ohl. In addition to the canned goods, fruits, vegetables and soaps that the food bank has asked for, people have also provided cash donations.

“We’re able to buy food at a considerably better price through the state program,” he said. “There’s no question that people want to help. They’re very sharing and caring people.”

The Mason City Salvation Army also looks to the holidays for its major revenue. Hundreds get involved in the annual Red Kettle Campaign, ringing the bell to generate donations.

“This is the time of year that two-thirds of our budget is generated,” said Maj. Gary Cole.

While donations are collected throughout the year, thousands of people get involved during the holiday season - both ringing the bell and filling the kettles.

Last year red kettles in Mason City generated a record $247,000. The pace hasn’t been as brisk this year, according to Cole, but the organization remains optimistic. It has bell ringing opportunities still available and anyone looking to take a shift can volunteer by calling 641-424-4031.

Amanda Ragan of the Community Kitchen of North Iowa says people are good about donating all year around. “But when it gets to be the holiday season,” she said, “people are more generous.

“They’re thankful for the things they have and very good about contributing their time and money.”

The community kitchen has started offering evening meals. In addition to noon meals served Monday through Saturday, evening meals are offered Monday through Thursday.

“We generally see some seasonal layoffs that do bring more people to the kitchen this time of year,” she said. “So the additional resources during the holidays are beneficial.”

The Knights of Columbus was first formed in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, CT. His hope was to unite men in their faith and provide for Catholic families in times of need. Guided by four core principles – charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism – other Catholic men soon followed suit and helped lay the foundation that has allowed the Order to flourish.

The Knights of Columbus is an active volunteer organization that raises awareness for needy causes and generates much needed funds to support a variety of charitable activities, including support of local parishes, renovation for churches and building of Catholic schools and seminaries. Our members have volunteered millions of hours and raised over a billion dollars – all with the intent to benefit humanity.

Today, the Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic service organization in the world.

Locally one of our biggest fund raising event is our Tootsie Roll Fund Raiser which usually starts the first weekend in August. Ninety percent of the funds raised locally goes directly to the local charities listed below.

Our hall is available for rental for weddings, graduations, company parties, etc.

We can provide the food for your event or you can have it catered in. We also hold what is known as our famous Friday Night Fish and Chicken Fry, which is open to the public. The money raised from these events goes toward paying our basic expenses and also goes toward local scholarship programs.

Since 1927 we have received thousands of letters similar to the ones above, which continue to reinforce the importance and true meaning of the Christmas Cheer Fund. Letters from children, adults and letters received anonymously, all asking for a little support during the holiday season.

In 1927 Lee Loomis, publisher of the Globe-Gazette founded the Christmas Cheer Fund, and each year thereafter it has continued to help brighten the holidays for many North Iowa residents due to your generosity. In the past 85 years you have given $2,392,900.86 to help North Iowans in need of a little cheer for the holidays. Every donation counts. Regardless of the size of your gift, anything will be greatly appreciated.

The 2012 Cheer Fund goal is $120,000. “ These people are not asking for elaborate gifts. They just want a little extra money to help buy food and other necessities,” said Globe-Gazette Publisher Howard Query. “This Fund is one way people can spread holiday joy.”

Cheer Fund donations or referrals may be made to: Christmas Cheer Fund, Globe-Gazette, P.O. Box 271, Mason City, IA 50402-0271. Donations may also be taken to the Globe-Gazette office, 300 North Washington Ave., Mason City, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cheer Fund requests may also be made at the Globe-Gazette office.
