MASON CITY — Walter and Ruth (Manning) Eau Claire met as teenagers at the Iowa State Fair. Mom wanted to meet our handsome dad, so she asked him to hold her sunglasses while she rode the bumper cars. She lived in Des Moines, he lived in Mason City, and it was the Great Depression, but they found a way to get to know each other.

They were married in Bethany, Mo., on Dec. 12, 1942, during a furlough from the Army during World War II. Walt served in the infantry and was wounded in Germany. Ruth waited stateside in Iowa and Washington State.

Since the war, they have lived in Mason City. Walt worked for the Milwaukee Railroad until 1974 and was an avid golfer. Ruth worked for many years at the Park Clinic and was a long-time member of the Women’s Club at Highland Golf Course. They have been longtime members of Trinity Lutheran Church.

They have been blessed with four children: the late Susann Allen; Michael (Jeanene) Eau Claire, Washington, D.C.; Denise (Pete) Held, Everett, Wash.; and Steven (Anna Mae) Eau Claire, North Potomac, Md.; 13 grandchildren, 22+ great-grandchildren (baby due in May), and one (so far) brand new great-great-grandchild.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS Schmidt named November ‘Youth of the Month’ MASON CITY — The Exchange Club of Mason City, named Spencer Schmidt “Youth of the Month” for November. He is the son of Tim and Lindsay Schmidt and is a senior at Newman Catholic High Schmidt School.

Schmidt carries a 3.9 grade point average, has been named to the Honor Roll all four years, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

He played football and

was named to the All-District Academic First Team and has participated in track, which included a trip to the state meet. In addition, he has been a member of the baseball team, golf team and the ping pong club. Throughout high school, Schmidt has been involved in various band and choir ensembles, and has participated in the spring musical as a lead character.

Schmidt enjoys a variety of activities including spending time with family and friends, and playing and watching sports. He plans to attend the University of Iowa and major in pre-dentistry.

Seminary scholarship award

ALGONA — The Bishop Garrigan Danz Squad competed at the Iowa State Dance Championships, Nov. 29, in Des Moines.

The team earned the title of State Champion in the Class 1 Kick and third place in Class 3 Pom. They were also honored with the Community Service Team award, and the most prestigious award of all, the Character Counts Team of the Year award. The team is coached by Colleen Conway-Schiltz and Barb Stence.

OSAGE — Osage native Daniel Hanson was recently honored with a full-tuition seminary scholarship from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Fund for Leaders. He is one of 16 students to receive full-tuition scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year.

Hanson is a student at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., and recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history and religion from Wartburg College.

On campus, Daniel was very involved in campus ministry, including serving as a peer helper and a member of the campus ministry board. He co-led a group that did weekly Bible studies for a social service center in Waverly, and also spent several summers as a camp counselor at three different Lutheran camps.

Nolan and Mason Crum Early Birds NORA SPRINGS — Joel Crum and Tracy Rottinghaus, of Nora Springs, are the parents of twin boys, Nolan and Mason Crum, born 6-16-12 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Nolan weighed 1 pound, 10 ounces and was 13 inches long. Mason weighed 1 pound, 12 ounces and was 13½ inches long.

Nolan and Mason are welcomed by big sister Kaci.

Grandparents are John and LuAnn Rottinghaus, and Bruce and Mindy Crum.

Don Wells, of Britt, will be celebrating his birthday on Dec. 15.
