Carberry, Meints KATIE CARBERRY, of Mason City, is the daughter of Bambi and the late Dennis Carberry of Mason City. Katie graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 2012, and is employed by Directions Research in Mason City, Iowa.

GABRIEL MEINTS, of Clear Lake, is the son of Slim and Pat Meints of Clear Lake. Gabriel graduated from Kaplan University in 2005, and is employed by United States Army in Ft. Lewis, Wash.

The couple will be married at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at Grace Evangelical Free Church in Mason City.

Parker Downs and Halie Grove of Clear Lake are pleased to announce their engagement and upcoming marriage.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS Newman senior selected for academic honor MASON CITY — Ryan Schupick, a senior at Newman Catholic High School, was named one of more than 3,000 candidates in the 2013 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. He is the son of Tim and Denise Schupick, Mason City.

The candidates were selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. Further consideration was based on students’ performance on either the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment, school recommendations and school transcripts.

A panel of educators will review these submissions and select 500 semifinalists in early April.

The Commission on Presidential Scholars will make the final selection of the Scholars. Members of the commission will select one male and one female student from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. students living abroad, 15 students-at large, and up to 20 students from the creative and performing arts. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May.
