AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS State Large Group Festival results ALGONA — Ensembles from the Algona High School Music Department attended the State Large Group Festival May 4, in Humboldt. The Concert Choir and Concert Band were awarded a Division I rating, and the Mixed Chorus was awarded a Division III rating. Teams of three adjudicators provided by the Iowa High School Music Association evaluated the three AHS ensembles’ performances. They rated the ensembles on the following criteria: tone quality, intonation, rhythm, balance and blend, technique, interpretation and musicianship, diction/articulation and appropriate literature. The independent evaluation aspect of the State Large Group Music Festival is the major element that Iowa high school bands and choirs use to determine the quality of their music ensembles’ performance level. Eagle Scout Award

ROCKWELL – Chadd Michael Blanchard, a member of Mason City Boy Scout Troop 401, Winnebago Council 173, earned the rank of Eagle Scout Dec. 13, 2011. This is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. A ceremony in honor of Blanchard’s achievement was held Sunday, April 15, 2012. Many friends and family attended to congratulate him on his accomplishment. Blanchard began Cub Scouting with Pack 24 of Sheffield, in 2005, and earned his Arrow of Light in 2009, Cub Scouts highest earnable rank. In 2011 he transferred to Boy Scout Troop 1401, where he earned his Eagle Rank. He is currently serving as a junior assistant scoutmaster for his troop. On his way to becoming an Eagle Scout, Blanchard earned the rank of first class, within his first year. His life project was the total reorganization and building of two wooden handled carriers to house all the troop’s merit badge books. Chadd Blanchard

Hero, temperatures reached minus 28 degrees while sleeping outdoors for 24 hours. Blanchard has completed three years of Snowy Owl and three years of Klondike Derby, serving as staff on both in 2012. In 2010, Blanchard attended the National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va. In 2011, Blanchard attended the Northern Tier cold weather camping called Okpik, and later that year attended a youth leader training conference in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming, called Eagle Claw, where he earned his Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics Trainer Badge. In 2012, Blanchard will be attending the National Sea Base in the Florida Keys, and will return to the Big Horns for another Eagle Claw. In 2013, he will be attending the National Scout Jamboree at the first ever Bechtel Summit in West Virginia. Blanchard’s Eagle project was completed in

October, 2011. His project involved completely rebuilding the playground at his church, the United Methodist Church in Rockwell. He also added new landscape timber and new woodchips, and two new sitting benches — one for small children and one for adults. Blanchard is 14-yearsold and will complete his 8th-grade year this May. He is the son of Brent and Theresa Blanchard, of Rockwell, and grandson of Jim and Kathy Blanchard of Rockport, Texas; Bruce and Jerriann Ries of Rockwell, and Noma Chadd, of Callaway, Neb. The title of “Eagle Scout” is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase, “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.” But not without a special thanks to my parents, Ed DePaepe, and Chuck Hogg. None of this would be possible without all of their help. “Thank You.” May the journey continue and be long.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS FOREST CITY — Six schools participated in the first Waldorf College/Forest City High School Art Show held May 1-4, at Waldorf College. Participating schools were: Belmond-Klemme High School with art instructor Jodi Barrus, Clear Lake High School with art instructor Tyler Purdy, Forest City High School with art instructor Katrina Martin, Lake Mills High School with art instructor Caryl Dahn, Newman Catholic High School with art instructors Susan Ruen and Patricia Ohl, and North Iowa High School with art instructor Steve Bergeson. On May 4, students from the six schools participated in a presentation from Mason City artist and competition judge, Paul Micich. All students present were able to view the artwork and vote for their peer’s work that was deserving of the Student Choice Award. Students attended an awards presentation and were able to receive feedback from the judge on their artwork. There were 19 categories for the artwork competition with one 3-D Best of Show, one 2-D Best of Show and a student Choice Award. The 3-D Best of Show went to Josefine Angel from Forest City, the 2-D Best of Show went to Haley Lambert from Newman Catholic, and the Student Choice Award went to Jessica Balek from Newman Catholic. Youth for Understanding winner CLEAR LAKE — Alexa Calaguas, of Clear Lake, and a student at Clear Lake High School, has

been accepted by Youth for Understanding USA, as an international high school exchange student. She was selected as a winner of the Finland U.S. Senate Youth Exchange scholarship to travel to Finland this summer. While in Finland, she will live with a host family. Youth for Understanding USA works with international partners in more than 60 countries and offers summer, semester, and year-long educational programs to destinations in Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, and Latin America.
