MASON CITY — Dr. Bill Franklin, of Mason City and Plymouth areas was inducted into the Hall of Fame at El Segundo High School, El Segundo, Calif., Oct. 15. Franklin is a 1959 graduate of El Segundo High School (ESHS). The high school established its Hall of Fame in recognition of uncommon achievement and perseverance by its graduates, who exemplify the school’s motto, “Enter to Learn, Go Forth for Service.” During its 80-year history, ESHS graduated some 12,000 students, of which 33 alumni have been inducted into the schools’ Hall of Fame. Franklin attended the University of CaliforniaDavis, graduating in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science-zoology. He got his master’s degree from Humboldt State University and his doctorate from Utah State. He came to Iowa in 1975 as an instructor in animal ecology at Iowa State University and remained on the faculty for 25 years, until his retirement in 2000.

The Festival Concert will be presented to the public at 7:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State University, Ames, on Saturday evening, Nov. 21. Iowa Public Television will record the concert for broadcast tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. and additional broadcast times. Please check the IPTV website (www.iptv.org) for any changes or additions. This program is under the auspices of the Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa Music Educators Association. Tickets are $15 each and all seats are reserved. There are three methods tickets may be obtained for the Iowa All-State Festival Concert: METHOD 1 — Iowa State Athletic Ticket Office - at window. The Iowa State Athletic Ticket Office is located on the west side of the Jacobson Athletic Building in Ames. The Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. METHOD 2 — Iowa State Athletic Ticket
Office - by mail or fax. Mail or fax orders will be accepted any time using the form located on the IHSMA website (www.ihsma.org/documents/AS_tickets.pdf). If order is received less than ten days before the performance, tickets will not be mailed but will be held at the “Will Call” window in the Jacobson Athletic Building on the day of the performance. METHOD 3 — Ticketmaster - Orders may be placed by phone, online (www.ticketmaster.com), or at any Ticketmaster outlet. Phone: 1-800745-3000. Ticketmaster will charge a per-ticket convenience fee.
Sluik named ‘Athlete of Week’ JAMESTOWN, N.D. — Tiffany Sluik, of Mason City, Iowa, a Jamestown College sophomore wrestler, was named Athlete of the Week, by the Jamestown Optimist Club, for the week of Oct. 19-25. Sluik won seven of eight matches that week and captured the silver medal in the Dina Open Wrestling Meet in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Williams graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Hanna graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of basic infantry training and advanced individual training. Hanna is the son of Molly Hanna, of Garner, and stepson of Kim Schleuger, of Britt. He is a 2009 graduate of West Hancock High School, Britt. Cadet Joshua Beyer, nephew of Dan and Barbara Beyer, of Mason City, was recently promoted to the rank of staff sergeant at Missouri Military Academy. In addition, he was placed on the Dean’s Honor Roll for his academic and military grades, and was awarded the Academic Fourragere for
superior scholastic achievement. Beyer is a member of the Academy’s 121st Corps of Cadets, which includes students from 30 states and 12 nations. Located in Mexico, Mo., the Missouri Military Academy enrolls young men in grades 6-12 and postgraduate studies, and includes a separate middle school which focuses on reading improvement and development of life skills. Army Reserve Pfc. Jacob M. Lane graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of David Lane, Algona, and is a 2008 graduate of Bishop Garrigan High School, Algona.
