Luke is a 2004 graduate of Sioux City East and a 2008 graduate of the University of Iowa. He works at Urban Lending Solutions in Broomfield, Colorado, as an appraisal specialist. Coe College students place at ISU Hackathon event CEDAR RAPIDS — Coe College students Kyle Goranson, of Mason City, along with Marissa Carson and Gabe Leonard recently took second place at the Iowa State University Hackathon event held April 10-12, in Hoover Hall on the ISU campus. Over 200 participants, from about 50 teams competed in this year’s event where students spent 36 hours conceiving, designing and implementing a computer software program. During the event, Goranson and his team developed the “PayDometer” app, an “exercise incentivizer” used to help people attain their exercise goals involving pedometers and step counts. Goranson is a 2012 graduate of Mason City High School, and is currently studying physics, mathematics and computer science at Coe College.
Congratulations Emma! ROCKFORD — Emma M. Arickx, daughter of Paul and Kelly Smith Arickx, and a senior at Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock High School, was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Iowa Heartland Credit Union. Britt student receives ISEA Scholarship for Future Teachers
AMES — Students from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences made up the Iowa State University teams who won the overall award among four-year institutions at the NACTA (North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture) Judging Conference, April 8-10. The conference top award, called the Sweepstakes Award, was presented for the teams’ good showing in 10 agricultural subject matter contests. Among the 823 contestants at the conference, participating for Iowa State University were: Macy Heetland, senior in agronomy, of Lakota: soil judging; Leo Kruse, junior in ag studies, of Rudd: ag computers, placing fourth; Matt Levan, freshman in agronomy, St. Ansgar: soil judging; Hailey Meitner, senior in ag business, of St. Ansgar: agribusiness, placing fourth.
BRITT — Brookelyn Savoy, of Britt, is the recipient of an Iowa State Education Association Scholarship for Future Teachers. Savoy is currently a junior at Iowa State University majoring in elementary education and English language arts. She is also a member of the ISEA/ISU student program where she serves as the social media chair. The ISEA offers scholarships to help sons or daughters of association members become teachers. Brookelyn Savoy’s mother, Roxanne Savoy, is a first-grade teacher at West Hancock Elementary School, Britt.
BVU Student Activities Board receives awards STORM LAKE — Members of the Buena Vista University (BVU) Student Activities Board, including Kayla Lohse, of Charles City, attended and presented at the National Association for Campus Activities regional conference, April 16-19, in Madison Wisconsin, where the group received several awards. Lohse, a senior corporate communication and Spanish major, and two other students presented “We’re Not Just Friends, We’re Family: How Creating an Organizational Culture Helps with Retention and Recruitment.” The BVU’s Student Activity Board was also recognized for its programming efforts on the BVU campus. The Midterm Munchies program was selected as the recipient of the Series Programming award, and the Pinterest program won the Innovative Programming Award. These awards were presented to an outstanding program from a member institution, and are based on student involvement, creativity and success.
North Iowa students awarded Iowa Soybean Association scholarships ANKENY — Amanda Anderson, of Algona, and Rebecca Rae Wiarda, of Ackley, were each awarded $1,500 scholarships, sponsored by the Iowa Soybean Association. They were among nine outstanding high school seniors awarded scholarships, who will pursue agriculture degrees at Iowa universities. To be considered for the scholarships students had to be high school seniors with plans to pursue a secondary education in an agriculture-related area of study, at an Iowa college. They also submitted an application that included a 650-word essay on the impact they intend to make on the agriculture industry.
Knudtsons receive GWRRA Life Grand Master award MASON CITY — The Gold Wing Road Riders Association has awarded GWRRA members Ron and Karen Knudtson, of Mason City, the Life Grand Master award, the highest award given by the GWRRA Rider Education Level Program. The Knudtsons have over 20 years of safe driving/riding/traveling on their Gold Wing Motorcycle/Trike and 20 years of safety by commitment, education, and preparedness.
Hailey Barrus competes in National America Miss Iowa Pageant BELMOND — Hailey Barrus, 16, of Belmond, was chosen as a state finalist in the National America Miss Iowa Pageant held May 2-3, at the Ramada 5 Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo. The National America Miss pageants are held for girls 4-18, and have five age divisions. Barrus participated in the Miss Teen age division. Her activities include: Speech Club, Thespians, Show Choir, volleyball and softball. Barrus is the daughter of Jodi Cramer-Barrus, of Belmond, and Bo Barrus, of Belmond, and granddaughter of Kent and Mari Cramer of Hampton.
Military notes Army Pfc. Justice Losee graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Losee is the daughter of Shawn Losee, of Riceville, and Theresa Wolthoff, of Rochester, Minn., and is a 2012 graduate of St. Ansgar High School, St. Ansgar, Iowa. U.S. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Dylan W. Katter and U.S. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Drake W. Katter graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. They are the sons of Kelly and Kendra Katter, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and grandsons of Mr. and Mrs. William Katter, of Garner, Iowa. The airmen are 2014 graduates of Deer Creek High School in Oklahoma City.
