DAY TO REMEMBER Poem by Gary Swartwood For Block Party 1200 - 1400 Blocks of North Hampshire Place
Let me tell you about my neighborhood. A lot of people would live here, if they could. We are happy to see your face. Right here on North Hampshire Place. Our neighbors are second to none. When you see what they have done. They are helpful and full of good advice. And usually done at no price. What would we do without Bob and Ray. Couldn’t get that kind of help on E-bay. No matter how long you’ve lived here. There is one thing that is clear. Our neighbors are as good as gold. No matter whether young or old. So, look around and you will see. North Hampshire Place is the place to be. We, of the twelve and thirteen hundred blocks of North Hampshire Place would like to thank Gary and wife, Sue, for the yearly planning of our block party with games, prizes, good food by all, memory book with pictures, police talks on our protection and neighborhood watch. Hope for many more!

Congratulations 2011 Heritage & Century Farm Recipients
Arthur & Shirley Rodemeyer • 1908 The newest member of the Rodemeyer family was born in the same time period as the Century Farms ceremony at the Iowa State Fair. Of the family, three out of the four children, two grandsons and one granddaughter attended the ceremony. The other grandson was attending to the birth of his son, the seventh great-grandchild for Arthur and Shirley. It was truly a family affair. It is known simply as the “Rodemeyer Farm, with Arthur’s great-grandfather the first to farm the land. He had two sons, one dying at age 21 from a ruptured appendix. It was then willed to Edward, who built the house and buildings in 1908. It was rented out for a few years, then Arthur’s father, Otto, moved over when he got married. It was originally 293 acres, and has 44 acres now. Arthur’s brother bought the rest. The 44 acres have crops, cows and timber. Some 25 acres are tillable. The timber is original and wooded, and is a pretty sight, said Arthur. The family appreciates the land and heritage. Simply put, “They like it.”
Mervin & Marilyn Krauss, Ilene Krauss • 1911 Samuel and Lottie Hersbergen were not quite finished building their farmhouse five miles south of Corwith when a baby arrived on the scene. Their daughter, Edith, was born in the Hersbergen’s temporary quarters - a grainery - in October, 1911. The Hersbergens raised horses, milk cows and hogs on 160 acres. The farm was eventually passed to Edith and her husband, George Krauss, and then to Edith’s son, Mervin Krauss, and his sisters, Marilyn and Ilene Krauss. Mervin raises corn and soybeans. Krauss Farms has grown to 320 acres. “I just think it’s important to keep the land in families, if possible. A lot of families haven’t been able to do that,” Mervin said. “It just means a lot, that I have roots that go back to my grandfather. It just means a lot that we’re still rooted to the land.” MS-56013
Linda Hagen, Carmen Johansen, Karen Heimer • 1883 Years ago there was a flowing well which was a popular gathering spot on the McCarthy farm, two miles north of New Haven in Mitchell County. “We just had a lot of people stop and get a drink,” said Linda Hagen of Osage, great-granddaughter of Jane and James McCarty, who established the farm in 1883. “They thought that was very unique. All the neighbors on a hot day, they’d just stop in the well house and get a cup and get a drink.” Another original well is still trickling. And McCarthy Farm is going strong. It’s still 240 acres - now operated by Linda’s son, Todd Miller. He raises beef cattle and corn. It began with the McCartys, who changed their name to McCarthy because another area family also was named McCarty. The farm then passed to their son and daughter-in-law, William and Mary McCarthy, and eventually to Hagen’s parents, Daniel and Rosemary McCarthy. Hagen believes the grainery may be original. “I just think it’s wonderful to still have these family farms, and just keep the generations going,” she said. “I like to see the family farm. I think it’s a wonderful place to raise children. You just learn to work hard, and you see another way of life. I just feel a lot of unity with it. I just think it’s a great life. It’s hard work, but it’s great.”
Cleo England • 1887 Caroline and George Heldig purchased 120 acres of farmland six miles northeast of Iowa Falls in 1887. Their daughter Sophia eventually inherited part of the farm, and her husband, Jacob England, purchased the rest from her siblings. The England’s son, John, and his wife, Lucille, owned the farm until 1998 when it was purchased by their daughter, Cleo England. It has expanded to 215 acres of corn and soybeans farmed by her son, Keith. Cleo’s son, Terry, is raising quail and pheasants, which will be released this fall. “I’ve got two windmills on it now (the acreage is part of the Whispering Willow Wind Farm), so we’re changing,” Cleo said. “It’s really kind of neat to know it’s been in the family that long. I know they (the Heldigs) couldn’t believe the price of land now.”
