DES MOINES — Winners and finalists were chosen at the Iowa Egg Council’s 26th annual cooking contest held April 16, at the Des Moines Botanical Center. Ten finalist recipes had been selected earlier this spring, from close to 200 original egg recipes submitted for the 2011 cooking contest. Winners were grouped into student recipes and finalists, and adult recipes and finalists. Among the winning adult recipes and finalists was Louise Piper, of Garner. She came in fifth-place with her recipe, “Polenta Veggie Scrambled Eggs.” The finalists were chosen based on originality and the use of eggs in the recipe. They prepared their dishes at the cook-off in front of a panel of food and nutrition expert judges. The recipes were judged on taste appeal, appearance, originality, nutritional content, and the use of a minimum of four eggs.

KENDRA MARIE THOMAS of Rockwell, Iowa, is the daughter of Terry and Sherry Thomas of Rockwell. Kendra graduated from Rockwell-Swaledale High School and Northwestern College. MASON CITY — Ashley Gutting, a sophomore at Mason City High School, was selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. The society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved academic excellence. The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel prizes. Gutting is the daughter of Phil and Sandy Gutting. She is active in concert band (first chair flute section leader), chorus, show choir, Masonian yearbooks, Best Buddies, varsity tennis and Silver Cord. She also volunteers for the Mason City Recreation Department and the city of Mason City. She is also a dancer with the Dance Arts Centre and Lucy’s Dance Studio.

Noon Rotary Club ‘Students of Month’ MASON CITY — Ellen Pyle and Nga Tran, both seniors at Mason City High School, were named the Mason City Noon Rotary Club’s “Students of the

Month,” for May. Ellen Pyle is the daughter of Larry and Brenda Pyle. Pyle participated in and is a letter winner in soccer, cross country, academics, band Pyle and choir. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. Her honors include: Principal’s List all four years of high school, AllAcademic Awards in soccer and cross country, and named to the Star Class of 2011 for Language. Pyle is a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and works as a lifeguard at the YMCA and the Mason City Family Aquatic Center, as well as teaching swim lessons for the Mason City Parks and Recreation department. She plans to attend Iowa State University next year, as an undeclared major with her interests leaning toward the sciences. Nga Tran is the daughter of Lynn and Andy Tran. She is an active participant in girls’ tennis, Mason City High School Student Senate, National Tran Honor Society and a member of the Student School Improvement Advisory Committee (SSIAC). Her honors include: Tennis captain (two years), Student Senate secretary and a CIML All-Academic award recipient. She is a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She plans to attend Iowa State University, Ames, next year to study biology.

Bishop Garrigan contest results ALGONA — Mary McCall’s junior English classes at Bishop Garrigan High School entered two contests this spring. Marzen appointment DOUGHERTY — Chad Marzen, formerly of Dougherty, has received an appointment as an assistant professor of legal studies in the Department of Risk Management/Insurance, Real Estate and Legal Studies, in the College of Business at Florida State University, (starting in the summer of 2011). The Risk Management/Insurance Program has been rated ninth in the nation among all risk management/insurance programs in the latest rankings from US News and World Report. Prior to this academic appointment, Marzen has been working as an associate attorney in the Engles, Ketcham, Olson and Keith, P.C. law firm in Omaha, Neb., specializing in insurance defense litigation.
