Thank You Rottinghaus retires from Waterloo Fire Rescue Judy Rottinghaus retired Nov. 4, 2014, from Waterloo Fire Rescue after serving the city as a firefighter, paramedic, and engineer for 18 years. An open house was held in her honor at Station 2 last week. She is the first female to retire from Waterloo Fire Rescue. Congratulations may be sent to their home at Nashua.

Rieman retires from Martin Marietta Dennis Rieman, of Rudd, will be honored at a retirement open house from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Rudd Community Center in Rudd. Dennis, is a heavy equipment operator at Martin Marietta Materials of Mason City, and is retiring after 36 years of employment with the company.

We’re Mov’n North! After calling Mason City home for the past 35 years, we’ve sold our house and will be spending this winter in our summer home in Minnesota. We want to thank those of you in Mason City who have provided us with opportunities which began on the very first day we landed in Mason City on a whim! Our family benefitted over the years from the excellent educational system provided to our children as well as the clubs, organizations, activities and our faith community in which we were involved. It has been an awesome experience to see how much Mason City has changed over the past 35 years all for the betterment of everyone who calls this community home. We will miss many wonderful people whom we have come to know during our time in Mason City. A special shout out goes to our friends; many of you have become like family to us (you know who you are). Wedding Hanus named Exchange Club Youth of the Month

Overmyer, Braden OMAHA — Krystal and Jonathon Braden were united in marriage on November 9, 2013, at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Krystal is the daughter of Lance and Lori Overmyer of Omaha. Jonathon’s parents are John and Karen Braden of Mason City. Krystal is a 2002 graduate of Millard North High School in Omaha. She received a bachelor of journalism from the University of NebraskaLincoln in 2007 and a master of arts from Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, in 2012. Krystal is employed by American Red Cross of Columbia, S.C. Jonathon is a 2004 graduate of Newman Catholic High School. He received an associate of arts from North Iowa Area Community College in 2006 and a bachelor of journalism in 2008 from the University of Missouri. Jonathon is employed by U.S. Tennis Association of Columbia, S.C. The couple resides in Columbia, S.C.

MASON CITY The Exchange Club — of Mason City named AJ Hanus “Youth of the Month” for October. He is the son of Ken and Paula Hanus of Clear Lake, and is a senior at Newman Catholic High School. Hanus carries a 4.0 grade point average, has been named to the Honor Roll each semester, is a member of the National Honor Society and has received the Presidential Fitness Award. In Hanus the past four years he has participated in cross-country, Mohawk hockey, track and field, band, Kairos, Quiz Bowl, Multimedia Club, football, golf and Ping Pong Club. AJ is a US Sailing certified Level 1 instructor and this past summer he garnered first place skippering an E boat at the 2014 Inter-Lakes Regatta held in Clear Lake. His crew included his father, Ken Hanus and Hank Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska. In the summer of 2014, AJ was the head-racing instructor for the Clear Lake Yacht Club’s Sailing School. He has spent his last six summers taking sailing lessons and teaching sailing school. He enjoys a variety of activities including swimming, boating, wake boarding, snow skiing, video games and hanging out with his friends. He plans to attend Iowa State University and major in software engineering.

North Iowa students selected for All-State Band, Orchestra and Chorus AMES - Students from several North Iowa school districts attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa High School musicians, by being selected to perform at the 2014 All-State Music Festival. The 68th annual Iowa All-State Music Festival, sponsored by the Iowa Music Educators Association and the Iowa High School Music Association, will be held Nov. 20-22 in Ames. Approximately 17 percent of students who audition are selected for membership in the AllState ensembles. Auditions for the 281piece All State Band, 201piece All-State Orchestra and 601-member All-State Chorus were held Oct. 25, at Storm Lake, Hampton, Manchester, Harlan, Indianola and Washington. Participants will rehearse on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22, in Ames, and the Festival Concert will be presented to the public at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State University, Ames. Iowa Public Television will record the concert for

Volunteers honored at 12th annual Volunteer Recognition Award Banquett MASON CITY - Nearly 40 volunteers were honored at the 12th Annual Volunteer Recognition Award Banquet held Oct. 30, at the MacNider Art Museum. The volunteers were recognized for their work on behalf of the Volunteer Service Department on various projects including Adopt-A-Street, AdoptA-Lot, Beautification, Park Watch, MacNider Museum events, and other special projects including school partnerships, graffiti eradication, tree plantings and administrative assistance. Mary Clark and Jerry

Weiland were this year’s recipients of the Shining Star award. Clark has volunteered for several City departments offering assistance with projects including clerical/office work, Adopt-A-Section at the cemetery, and food and event preparation. Weiland donated his time to numerous projects at Highland Park Golf Course including painting the clubhouse and tee markers, stone work at tee boxes, and teaching golf to Junior Golf League members. He helped the Parks Department and the Alternative School students with tree

plantings and helped clear walks to the Mason City Area Veterans Monument in Central Park. The 2014 Shining Star Team recognition was awarded to The Nicholson family for their help with the Adopt-A-Lot program, litter cleanup, graffiti cover-up, tree plantings, mailings, park painting and Earth Day activities. Missy Nicholson, her sister Michele, her mother Cindy, and her husband and children have donated countless hours of volunteer time to many projects. The Shining Star Award

is awarded to individuals and teams or businesses that contribute to the needs of the city. The Volunteer Service Department is a department of the City of Mason City. The City Volunteer program promotes and coordinates volunteer opportunities within city departments to citizens seeking to enhance the community by donating their time and skills to various municipal projects. Awards & Achievements Keenan named Mason City Noon Rotary Club ‘Student of the Month’ MASON CITY — Katie Keenan, a senior at Mason City High School, was selected as the Mason City Noon Rotary Club’s “Student of the Month,” for November. She is the daughter of Pat and Carol Keenan. Keenan is a member of the Mason City High School Concert Choir, Mason City High School Symphonic Band, Mohawk Power and Keenan Marching Band, where she is a drill leader. She is involved in the Silver Cord program and leadership class. She has been a member of Mason City Challengers 4-H Club and a member of Cerro Gordo County Teen Council. Keenan’s community activities include attending Epiphany Parish-St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she assists with children’s liturgy, religious education and is also involved in the youth group. She enjoys volunteering at Community Kitchen and working at the Mason City Family Aquatic Center, as well as babysitting. Keenan plans to attend Ave Maria University in Florida or Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota next year to major in biochemistry, with an emphasis on premedicine.

Wartburg inducts students into Phi Eta Sigma WAVERLY — Wartburg College recently inducted 68 students into Phi Eta Sigma, the national honor society for college freshmen. Students must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 and be in the top 20 percent of their class by the end of their first year to be eligible. Wartburg College’s Phi Eta Sigma members have the opportunity to win additional scholarships through the honor society, as well as participate in a variety of social and service events on campus. CLEAR LAKE — Gene and Nancy (Trojahn) Huber of Clear Lake, Iowa, were married November 9, 1974, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, Iowa. They have two daughters: Kelley (Justin) Rath of Sherrill, Iowa, and Sara Huber of Andover, Minnesota. They will celebrate with family on a trip later this winter.

MASON CITY — Curtis Trebil and Christina (TeKippe) Trebil of Mason City, Iowa, were married November 8, 1969, at First United Methodist Church in Mason City, IA. The couple will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. They have five grandchildren. Happy 45th Anniversary!!! Love from all of us!!!

65th Anniversary CLEAR LAKE — Robert E. and Lois D. (Davis) Pals were married Nov. 11, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They have two children, Randy (Judy) Pals, Clear Lake, and Sally (Jerry) Witt, Ankeny. They also have seven grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.
