Jordan Theobald chosen Mason City Noon Rotary Club’s ‘Student of the Month’ MASON CITY — Jordan Theobald, a senior at Mason City High School, was selected as the Mason City Noon Rotary Club’s “Student of the Month” for March. She is the daughter of Brandie and Nick Theobald and has two younger sisters, Riley and Shaye Theobald. Theobald Theobald is involved in the Mason City Symphonic Band, the volleyball and softball teams, Mohawk Power and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is a varsity letter winner in volleyball, softball, band and twice in academics. She has been honored with all-academic awards for softball and volleyball all four years of high school, as well as being on the Honor Roll. She has been recently selected to be a part of the Star Class of 2015 for Social Sciences. Theobald’s community activities include working at the Mercy Family picnics, working Hobo Days in Britt, addressing envelopes for the school system and working with her fellow National Honor Society members. She plans to attend Iowa State University next year with an undecided major.
MASON CITY — The Exchange Club of Mason City named Anna Riesen “Youth of the Month” for February. She is the daughter of Bill and George Riesen and is a senior at Mason City High School. Riesen carries a 4.0 grade point averRiesen age, has been on the honor roll throughout high school and is a member of the National Honor Society. Riesen is very active in music participating in marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, and Mohawk Power as a trombone player. She also performs with the concert choir, show choir and chorale. She is a member of the Art Club, co-president of the Random Acts of Kindness Club, and a long time performer with the Stebens Children’s Theatre. Anna enjoys volunteering, playing the trombone and ukulele, baking, drawing and painting, and sewing. She is planning to attend either Iowa State University, Washington University in St. Louis or Yale University to pursue a degree in architecture or civil engineering.
Emily Till recognized by Mason City Sunrise Rotary Club MASON CITY — Emily Till was recognized by the Mason City Sunrise Rotary Club as its January “Student of the Month.” Emily is a senior at Newman High School where she has been active in volleyball, track, and cheerleading. Emily is a member of the Till National Honor Society and serves as a Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She is the daughter of Stacie and Greg Till. Emily plans to attend the University of Iowa with an interest in nursing.
Ally Andersen named to UNI Dean’s List CEDAR FALLS — Ally Andersen, of Clear Lake, was named to the fall semester Dean’s List at the University of Northern Iowa. This is an additional name added to the list. The UNI fall 2014 semester Dean’s List was published in the Feb. 22 Celebrations section.
Holly Hejlik honored at state media competition WAVERLY — Wartburg College student media organizations won 29 awards at the annual Iowa College Media Association conference, Feb. 5-6 in Des Moines. Holly Hejlik of Rockwell, was among the honorees, earning third-place in “Best Long Form Documentary,” for “The House Music Built.”

AWARD & ACHIEVEMENT Clear Lake Middle School student places in Radon Poster Contest CLEAR LAKE — Emily Majerczyk, from Clear Lake Middle School in Clear Lake, took second place in this year’s statewide American Lung Association radon poster contest. More than 781 students from 34 different school districts across Iowa participated in the contest to raise awareness of the health risks associated with radon gas. The top three submissions from each state were then sent to the national contest sponsored by the National Radon Program Services in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). All of those state entries were then voted on and narrowed down to the top 10 national posters. Emily’s poster was selected in the top 10 from over 3,500 posters submitted from across the U.S. Emily, her family and teacher Stac Schroeder attended an awards banquet at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden where she and the other state finalists were honored.

STORM LAKE — Buena Vista University’s (BVU) student media organizations took home 29 awards and other honors at the 2015 Iowa College Media Association (ICMA) conference held in February in Des Moines. Area members who belong to BVU’s campus media organizations — KBVU, the University Cable Network (UCN),

Crimmins earns First Chair French Horn with ISU Symphony Orchestra
Minnesota State Mankato announces 2014 Fall Semester Dean’s List
MASON CITY — Abby Crimmins, of Mason City, has earned First Chair French Horn, a Principal Player, with the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra. The 2013 Mason City High School graduate is in her second year with the 85-member Orchestra directed by Dr. Jacob Harrison, Director of Orchestral Activities at ISU. Crimmins is a sophomore at ISU where she is pursuing a degree leading to a career as a Speech-Language Pathologist. She has maintained a Dean’s List-level GPA in her studies. She also works in the ISU Writing Lab. In addition to playing with the ISU Symphony, she will be playing in the 17-member Orchestra for the Iowa State University Theater Department’s production of Les Miserables in mid April. Abby is the daughter of Mary Witherall, and Roger and Lisa B. Crimmins of Mason City. While at MCHS, Abby played in the Symphonic Band and Mohawk Power, as well as Marching Band where she was a Drum Major her senior year. ISU Symphony’s final concert of the year, on Saturday, April 25, will be combined with ISU’s Choirs for Brahms’ German Requiem, in CY Stephens Auditorium.
MANKATO, Minn. — The Academic High Honor and Honor Lists (Dean’s Lists) for the past fall semester at Minnesota State University, Mankato, have been announced. Among 3,046 students, a total of 735 students qualified for the High Honor List by achieving a 4.0 straight “A” average, while 2,311 students earned a 3.5 to 3.99 average to qualify for the Honor List. To qualify for academic honors, undergraduate students must be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours for the semester. North Iowa students
