Ensign Edgar serves as a Public Affairs Officer and continues her military training at the Defense Military Information School, Fort Meade, Md. Her civilian job is at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington as Associate Manager of Committees and Communications for the Environment, Technology & Regulatory Affairs division. A 2007 graduate of the University of Dubuque and a 2004 graduate of Garner-Hayfield High School, she follows in the footsteps of her father, grandfathers, uncles and a cousin, by serving in the Armed Forces.

ANNIVERSARY Corporal Leland Faktor died 70 years ago, a courageous 20-year-old killed in service to his country on the Raid Over Tokyo with Jimmy Doolittle. Leland was born May 17, 1921, in Plymouth, Iowa, and died April 18, 1942. Leland gave his life for our freedom and we will love and remember you always.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS Matson to graduate with honors COLUMBIA, Mo. — Michael Edmund Hans Matson will graduate from the University of Missouri, May 12, 2012, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology. He will graduate with departmental honors. In addition, Michael was chosen to present research at the Maize Genetics Conference in Portland, Oregon. Michael was extended several fellowship offers for graduate studies. He has accepted the Dean’s Distinguished Fellowship award from the University of California – Riverside. Palmer College of Chiropractic Dean’s List ROCKFORD — Maria Staudt, of Rockford, a current ninth trimester student in the doctor of chiropractic program at Palmer Collge of Chiropractic, Davenport, was named to the Dean’s List for the eighth trimester. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, a student must achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.50 in all studies for the respective term, based on a 4.00.

MILITARY NOTES Air Force Airman Dakotah Kamp graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Paula and Randy Kamp, of Mitchell, and is a 2011 graduate of Osage High School. Army ROTC Cadet Aaron T. Slaichert received the George C. Marshall Award, during an awards ceremony at the Marshall Center, Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding senior Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) cadets, in military science studies and leadership values, in each battalion at host universities or colleges. This is a national award and the highest award an ROTC cadet can receive. Slaichert is a student at Iowa State University, Ames. He is the son of Tim and Karen Slaichert, of Garner, and is a 2006 graduate of Garner-Hayfield High School.
